It is sad to see NHRA isn’t as strong in fans as it used to be . Back in the 1970’s , my dad and I use to go to Milan drag in Milan Michigan. We lived in Ypsilanti Michigan same town as Connie and Scott Kalitta . When racing was in town , you would always see Connie and Scott at The FULL HOUSE restaurant on ecorse rd. in Ypsilanti , having a burger after the races . Nice down to earth Brothers . R.I.P. Scott you are Missed in Ypsilanti by your friends 🙏🏻
You know guy's I realize everyone think's Ole Steve Evens is like the Godfather of Drag racing announcing But I'm gonna say I've never heard anyone say the dumbest ass shit than ole Steve how he seem's to spice it up regardless to make each round a "War" or some kind of thing .. The man just flat out say's the craziest shit . I'm thinking he's either not really a motorhead or straight up clueless ..
My first US Nationals, 1983. Anything could happen when those nitro engines fired, so many engine explosions, it was awesome! But oildowns took forever to clean up and a couple passes to get the lane back in shape. Small teams, all you had to do was pick up a wrench and you were on the pit crew. Thanks for posting, great memories!
Exactly...I see people saying it seemed in slow motion compared to now, but that speed was still fast, but at a speed where it was still digestible. Now its boom, over. It was perfect then.
Billy Williams won a World Championship, and the Grace Cup with this Dragster when it ran on Alcohol! At this race he ran Top/Fuel! We ran the car on fuel at Bristol, than the car was retired. Later the car was pulled down from the rafters and I drove the car for Jeff Rivers, Later I ran the quickest it ever ran on Alcohol 6.32 at Bakersfield! What memories with this car!
Lyle Larson, now that’s way cool bro... So does the car still see appearances or it’s back in the rafters again? Man, I still remember seeing cars like this race at the Cajun Nationals in Laplace, La... Does the car still have its original paint on it?👍🏾
When the cars looked awesome and there was no whooping and 100mph chat at the end to fit the tv schedule. This from a UK fan. Great to hear the voice of Steve Evans too , iconic :)
I was about to write the same. Yeah, I can remember when the 5 second barrier was first broken by a father and son team (can't remember their names now) running rocket cars. Son ran 5.1, father ran 4.9 seconds. I remember thinking at the time, ain't nobody ever going faster than that. And now we're down in the 3s.

Just think Top fuel is over two seconds faster now.
WOW 30k to win. About same as what they get paid in 2020-21

Ah the good old days, when the cars ran a quarter mile and were slow enough to provide actual drama during each race (sigh).

THESE GUYS WORKING ON THE GROUND? WHAT THE FUCK?
I still love that line from Amato " It made a lot of noise. Sounded expensive" lol
Never realized just how "new" the master control tower actually is on the east (oval) side of the facility.
WOW
I saw my first live drag race in '82 and everyone was in awe at the cars running in the 5.50s at over 250. Now it looks like slow motion.
