Imagine an ice cream melting.
Looking at the dripping part of the ice cream as it streams down the side, the line/top is the ridge. The head of the droplet is the spur, and the top of the ice cream where the drip is originating from is the hill or should I say "Knoll".
Now imagine another drip beside the original ice cream drip, the space in between both these drips is the valley.
I hope this helps, it's hard to give examples in a worded format.
