  • Come along with us on a journey beginning over 65 million years ago!
Our rock hounding family enjoyed an afternoon on a small cove of beach in New Zealand, where fossilised (also known as Petrified wood) is abundant. We met some friendly and some not so friendly seals, as well as finding some cool other fossil bits, belemnites and mosasaur bone.
Fossils from this beach are from the Cretaceous period, so from 145 - 65 MILLION YEARS AGO!
We were so lucky with the wood we found today! Even finding some pieces that had completely agatized. Left feeling like we'd found gold!

Some further information of the process of Wood Fossilisation
Wood becomes fossilised through a process called permineralization, which occurs when plant material becomes buried in sediment, such as sand or mud, and is then subjected to pressure and mineral-rich water over a long period of time.
As the sediment gradually hardens into rock, the minerals in the water can slowly replace the organic material in the wood, such as the cellulose and lignin, with mineral deposits, such as silica or calcite. This process can result in the preservation of the original structure of the wood, including its cellular details and growth rings.
Over time, the original organic material may completely decay and be replaced by the minerals, leaving behind a fossilised copy of the original wood. Fossilised wood can provide important clues about the history of the plant and the environment in which it lived, including the climate, geological conditions, and other factors that shaped the landscape over time.

Years ago while fishing I saw a milled 2x6 sticking up out of the water. I found it was stuck deep in the river mud. I dug it out and found that the part stuck in the mud had petrified. Clearly a modern milled piece of lumber that has petrified could not have taken place over millions of years. It's based on water and mineral content.

The wood found here is all from 1 seem of geology aged in the Cretaceous. 65 million. Some wood tho is better fossilised volcanically much faster. Like the coromandel stuff.
