This was great! You have a nice way of explaining things simply that no one else can seem to do. Your video on adjusting rates really helped me understand how all these things work together. Keep it up!
I haven't finished the video but I just wanted to say I really like these videos along with the quad theories. You have helped me incredibly since my start in fpv. I still haven't built my first quad (I'm working on it but I want to make sure everything's ok before I fire up and plug in). Btw I'm that kid you helped last year. Thanks so much.
I finished the video and it is the first video that has actually helped me understand what the different terms do and how they function. This is by far one of the most helpful channels in RUclips.
Hey man, what you said at 7:36, to just start with a stock tune, that just got you a new subscriber. Thanks man. I got this brand new drone sitting next to me waiting to get the final heat shrink I'm stressing out about PIDs that I don't even need to worry about setting. I've only ever flown a UDI disco before, so I need to be focused on getting the thing to fly and then not smashing it right off the bat. I couldn't figure out if leaving it stock was going to make it smash (or burn, for that matter). This thing is kind of intimidating to me because I've done my share of electrical work and I know exactly how many pixies are shooting through there. Also it sounds like a frickin tornado with those props on. Cheers.
Completely agree with your first statement, any and all PID info on the tubes is hard to understand, I have had better luck with the test and tune method over and over to get it closer.. thanks for the info man, appreciate all of it. You are my favorite source for racing drone info for real.. the way you present it is sensible to me. Keep up the good work!
thanks for this! just put up my first tuning review, and you've reinforced a few things I've been learning. I really appreciate your non-scientific/feel-based explanations :)
damm, that is what i was looking for! i watched like 50 PID videos since my quad fly like a lawnmower out of the box, but none of them were helpful at all .. lots of info, but hey.. i just need to get it on .. after watching yours, went out .. 4 packs later, it fly like a charm !! thanks a lot !
So, I am definitely a beginner. I watched a video on how PIDs worked before this one, but your's gave great insight as to how the three work together and how they impact the quadcopter together. Thank you!
Dazzle Duds yeah I wish it actually worked out as easily however. once you start messing with the numbers, some shake or bobble you see in the video can be any number of factors. it's your job to recognize which one needs to be changed. and like I said in the video, this is a partial understanding.
Interesting take on the topic. Been doing some straight down free falls lately and I feel like that is a great test for the I, especially now with anti gravity gain fixing the pitch problems on quick chops.
It's even better to do free falls in a windy environment. Sometimes I still get some bobbles which I attribute to unbalanced/uneven motors I think. I know the RCX motors I had in the past were terrible but the newer brother hobby motors are really good when they're new.
Yeah, new motors are the best ;) Any chance you could send me the file for your suspended softmounts? I would normally just buy some from Serge, but I need them tomorrow. If not I can just whip a knock off up and print them out haha.
I never thought that loop time is so IMPORTANT.. i had weird problems with take off etc. and thought the default 500 cycles per second is enough... i set it now to 5000 cycles (200us) on my flip32 and works great. thank you so much !!!!!!!!!!!
you just got a new subscriber, yeah I've been flying couple of months, and I want to understand pid tuning, there are so many pid videos i watched and i got more idea on your video, great!!.. :)
Don't even bother. I've been doing this for five years and I can just barely tweak things to make them fly better. I have never ever been able to take a crappy flying quad and make it fly great through PID tuning.
Great Video, as always, one of the very few with a very high concentration of information. One thing about cg or P gain for an X like copter: don´t forget the battery, which is often elongated along the pitch axis, so perfect equal pitch and roll I don´t expect even with an X frame...
you probably feel you didn't explain much but its not the size of the hammer its how you swing it. I think this way and how you explain it will reach many.. PID as I've seen it isnt just hard to understand its hard to actually explain. My problem has been understanding I-gain.
So when is part ✌🏻 coming out? Its been 2 months now already.. Everyone should look at many vids as possible about pids.. everyone has their way to explain. And your way of explaining it is very easy to understand. So give us part two please : )
I like this video, but I personally think that PID tuning videos should be a lot shorter. I know PIDs are a huge subject, but all Im looking for when I get confused is a three minute video that says "when you go up on P, this will happen. when you go up on I... etc." I know that my friends and I are always having trouble tuning because I cant stand to watch a twenty minute video where they get to what you need at 12 minutes in. over all, your video has been the most straightforeward. thanks.
Yes Agree, very well explained, just one question, i have a Armattan Chameleon and using Tattu 4s 1550 Lipo but noticed a lot are using 1300, should i change to 1300. thanks for the info!!!!
Malcolm Dickinson I did research on the same thing, the plain and simple answer is yes 1300 is better weight wise for must not all but most 5", I have 4 tattu 1300s very very nice Lipo.
Malcolm Dickinson apparently yes, I was always leary about the "small" differences and reviewers making a big deal out of nothing. With the 1500 remember the pack is also a bit longer as well, but if you have it centered it should be ok. But yes you'll notice a difference, not some miraculous difference but you'll understand why 1300 is so popular
Malcolm Dickinson I think that you should fly 1300mah for freestyle, when you carry a GoPro, but for racing I prefer a 1550 oder 1600mah lipo, because sometimes i need to drop fast into a gravity gate / gate, and as everyone here knows: A heavy quad goes faster ;)
Love the content! Hoping for some advice.... brand new chameleon build. Flies perfect better than any other quad I have except during take off for the first few seconds low to mid throttle the first 10-20 ft in the air it whobbles pretty good. I even went through took off all filters through dynamic filter and flies even better except that initial whobble. Any suggestions?
Nice video. I would like to see a video with your opinion on Rates. I almost feel like my rate settings are becoming more critical to how I fly esp from racing to Freestyle.
You have changed my flying life. If I have the micro brushed 1s H frame quad similar to your other videos, and I am doing a 180 turn but the front end will dip down at the corner of the 180 turn, what PIDS do I look at?
This is a very old video. It doesn't really apply now. If you keep on the throttle during any turns the quad will usually maintain it's attitude better but it's harder to fly like that because it'll change direction very quickly....if you're 'pro' level you can handle it. Otherwise, you may want to increase your minimum idle. Many will say to increase 'I' but that won't actually do much in my experience. Make sure air mode is on too
Been looking for this.. to pick your brain about pids.. Everyone has their way of explaining it. I can tune.. but thats thanks to youtube. This is going to be really interesting to see : ). Many are talking about motors coming down cool.. i can get sort of a good tune but motors are always very slightly warm. I can set p and d pretty good.. its i-term i find a little hard. What is your thoughts about anti_gravity in betaflight?
Very very good insight. I will pay attention to those moves while tuning. I feel we have gotten spoiled lately with betaflight. Stock pids are good. Change P up or down as needed. Inrcease D until smooth or overheat ;)
Hey Bob I built a EVO with the 2206 2522 motors and soft mounting both fc and motors. And my motors come down pretty warm even when turning down D quite a bit. How hot do your motors get like cool? Pretty Warm to touch?
Rejkyeah no I understood it but honestly it was like 2hrs with little explanation, a lot of talking and useful information spread out. ain't nobody got time for that! Really hard to retain info like that. he also ended up with a pretty poor tune so there's that. I suspect because he turned off numbers to tune other numbers...
Kabab FPV hahaha I'm in your boat. i was like "that dude overcomplicates this, and my stock pids flies better" - so guess your vid will help alot. mathematically correct or not
Hello Kabab!! Great video. I understand what you are saying with the looptimes as that makes sense to me but I have a question. I fly kiss fc with a looptime if 1000(im pretty sure) ive always wondered how can kiss work so well with such a low looptime?
DrewLittle FPV that's a great question. as far as I know, betaflight is quite messy code. I have no first hand experience. just heard from other devs. it's quite possible that kiss is just being very efficient or doing something else interesting. also, a loop of 1000 and gyro rate of 8k have a similar effect as just 8k/8k. the FC is getting the most up to date info before execution
as I described in later videos, this method of tuning makes absolutely no sense because once you raise the other numbers the first numbers you headset will completely change
I was planning to but tuning has become very complicated these days and there's no easy way to explain it. It has more to do with filter settings than actual PID tuning. The best way I have found so far is just to use emu flight and run it on defaults
Betaflight 3.3 is out and tuning things changed again. At least for me firmware update between 3.3 and 3.3.1 without changing loop kHz's and PID profile settings, ended with awful vibrations and propwash. This tutorial seems should be updated :)
when do you change your props I have a prop on my quad that's been there for 2 weeks its all banged up I don't know if I should throw it out or keep it.
When I set my gyro update frequency to 8khz the PID loop won’t go above 2khz. I’m running a matek f405 and have had no problems with it other than this. I set both to 8 in betaflight then when I reboot the pid loop resets back to 2khz. Help? Edit: I set the gyro loop to 32khz and the PID loop went up to 8khz. It seems the PID loop can only go to a quarter of the gyro loop. Don’t know why, can someone explain?
Great explanation. Out of curiosity are you using the new anti_gravity settings in betaflight? I know if affects I term but would you turn that on to start at stock then tune from there or tune first then turn anti_gravity on?
Hey Kabab say you set your p to a point below an oscillation point but are not happy with how locked in it feels can you use the Vbat PID settings to bring that locked feel back?
How do I know what gyro rate is upported by the FC? I've got a pretty cheap one so, could I mess it up by setting the kHz too high or what would happen? Greetings from Germany man, just got into your channel and really start loving your stuff. :)
hateeternalmaver usually the manufacturers site will have the specs. Just find that long list of specifications then hit ctrl-f and search through it for “loop time” and “gyro” that should do it. If you’re still having trouble just ask and I’ll take a look around.
hateeternalmaver also, try not to turn it up to max. Depending on what else you have enabled you could overload the cpu.if you have an f4 board 8khz and 8khz should be perfectly fine.
Skylatian Dude I have an F1 ... =D I tried to go to 2/2 but it won't arm although CPU load looks ok (like 30%). But I'm going to upgrade to an F4 soon anyways. Thanks for hint with the spec-sheet, will try that.
hateeternalmaver no problem! Always happy to help. Personally, I have success with the matek f405-osd and fchub6s (also Matek) the combo is like 40$ and works beautifully. It’s even got a ribbon cable to connect the two to minimize wiring. Hope that helps!
Kiss is very very different. It's nothing like betaflight and settings cannot be compared. Flight quality is another story. Go ahead and put betaflight on 1k see what it's like 😂
@@eduardotrejogaw nothing will explode. If you have an F4 and using betaflight, put it on 8k/8k. If you have an F3, make sure the accelerometer is off and you can rub 8k loop and 4k gyro. This is standard today. It has been for the past year and a half.
Kabab FPV lol I was joking 🙃 Will have to try your suggestion, I have one old quad on which I might try that, but I mostly fly Kiss now to me feels much better than Betaflight. Granted, I switched to kiss when Betaflight was rubbish and I’ve heard it has come a very long way since.
my motors desync at full throttle for some reason at 4k gyro and at 8k it wont take off, it just freaks out on the ground. my escs are the old xm20a which i plan to upgrade and they only do oneshot 125.
@@Kabab ya buddy I agree..Tho with the info i got from u and countless other's,over clocking & shear disregard of current physics I'm happy to say I'm just ripping as hard as I can get away with.but when I get a new qwad It will be much earned.thanks a ton.I'll be watching.
There never was because it's impossible to actually tune without dealing with the filters. Filters are more important than the pids. Far far more important
@@Kabab thanks doc. You and JB are one of the few lads that make this hobby worth looking into. and I agree, tuning hurts my head... I just don't want jello in my gopro! (I watched that vid and i think it helped a lot, I just need to try again with the ND filter that I got today)
This is like trying to learn another language, there is no simple way to xplane it,no one has a video like we’re chid gets it. I’m a real dummy, I thought building a Pid controller box would be the hard part. Getting temp settings for is guess and keep guessing still don’t get it... I just don’t get it. Once I ever learn it then it will be like talking English
@@Kabab Well that's kinda my problem. I use the defaults but of course get some propwash and vibration so I want to understand PID's to fine tune my quad. But on all tutorials you only get like the basics what PID's do and they show it in like steps of 5 or 10 but that's not really useful. Your video helped me a bit more but a video how to tune the defaults would be so useful for many people I think....
I prefer the KISS fc, everyone should read some of Felix's posts about looptimes and gyros. Mr. Steele, Johnny FPV, finalglideaus and many more top pilots exclusively use KISS flight controllers. I truly believe KISS fc is the fastest way into the air for new pilots. I've used cc3d, naze32, f3, f4 boards and after trying them all I find myself only flying my kiss quads.
FlyQuad FPV yeah there is something distinctly special about how Felix puts things together. Boris and Felix work closely these days. I actually do prefer BF at this point. they're all really good performance these days though.
My last two builds (180 and 130mm quads) are based on SPRacingF3. I flashed Bateflight3.1 and the stock tune works just fine for me. I consider myself as a newbe btw.
Miroslav Pilat I've heard good things about betaflight recently. I'm too busy to give it a try, business before pleasure. I'll get to it soon enough. last time I examined BF it was 2.9 I believe. lots of improvements since. I like the fact you can control the osd through it but that doesn't help with most of my builds I use a pdb osd. the power pro osd is a rock solid performer. I have it in 2 quads. no configuration. things are getting better all the time though, it's an exciting time to be a quad pilot for sure.
Rates are really personal. I look at some people's rates and they seem totally wack too. My rates are totally different than that these days. I run 1.31 and .7 super expo with 1.56 and .65 on the yaw.
Yeah true, i think i am a bit over the whole patreon thing ....watched a live feed last night from VEK and he is giving away a 3inch quad ...there was 140 people tuned in at the time but he chose the winner from his patreon supporters only .....luckily the guy was in the live chat aswell otherwise it woulda just been sucky! Patreon is like double dipping ...and i hate when they beg for money like stew from uavfutures
vvVFANGVvv yeah it's stupid. I remember a long time ago when I heard them say. I love what I do and blah blah. I'm here to help the community blah blah blah...... now it's all about oh it's taking all of my time to produce a RUclips video. it's time for all of my subbers to pay me .. bro I clicked unsubscribe so fast . hahha
Part 2 never happened because nobody ever figured out how to properly tune PID's. It's a lot more complicated than originally expected. Filters and other settings around ESC's and such seem to be more impactful than PIDs with respect to tuning.
This was great! You have a nice way of explaining things simply that no one else can seem to do. Your video on adjusting rates really helped me understand how all these things work together. Keep it up!
Finally a PID video that I can watch all the way through! Many thanks Kabab, extremely helpful stuff.

Watch one of my more recent videos. 'Tuning for the lazy' I think it's called. Things have changed a lot
Thanks, for catering to us normal people, Kabab! Excellent, excellent video
Been struggling with Pid tuning, going to give this a go tomorrow. The way you have described it makes it so easy to comprehend. :)
Oh and subbed ;)
Dazzle Duds yeah I wish it actually worked out as easily however. once you start messing with the numbers, some shake or bobble you see in the video can be any number of factors. it's your job to recognize which one needs to be changed. and like I said in the video, this is a partial understanding.
Kabab FPV its definitely a learning curve, I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Video's like this make it much easier....

thank you!! made this video so i didnt have to. absolutely nailed it.
Looking forward to your take on this subject. Good start so far. 👍🏻
Maybe you could test the impact of min_throttle? More min_throttle for not so punchy but high-revving props, less min_throttle for very punchy props.
thank fuck for this man, i've been losing hair learning this shit. thank you
dude, u need to make part2 of this!
I kinda did. It's gotten good enough where defaults with minor tweaking is pretty darn good. The video is called something like: tuning in 2019
Stock PIDs seem to work ok usually. Every time I try to change them and tune it better I just end of making it worse :(
Hi Kabab FPV, Great video and nice explanation! What about parts 2+? Will they be available soon? =)
I've been holding off on part 2 because we're heading towards dynamic PID's. So this will all be a thing of the past in the future.
But what to do now, to normal folks? Before this amazing future arrives...
When will Part 2 come out? Really want to see this in action, love the explanation.
Jason Graham part 2 will come out when I actually am able to get a reliably good tune.

2663540 antigravity was absolutely needed. huge help. 'cool' motors means luke warm.
Thank you! When do you plan the second part?
Very very good insight. I will pay attention to those moves while tuning. I feel we have gotten spoiled lately with betaflight. Stock pids are good. Change P up or down as needed. Inrcease D until smooth or overheat ;)
yeah that's basically it.
What do you think it says about my tune that when I punch it, and then when the quad comes down and I roll on throttle I get occilations?
Not sure exactly what you're describing but sounds like you might need to add more TPA?

hi bud can you simply use betaflight to get ya going with a stock set up? I have a wizard that tells you I'm just learning!

as I described in later videos, this method of tuning makes absolutely no sense because once you raise the other numbers the first numbers you headset will completely change
how to tell the difference between prop wash oscillations caused by too much I gain vs too much P gain?
P gain issues are evident at higher throttle usually and all the time
thanks, I lowered my I gain seems to have helped...
Good content. Thank you.
I dont have OSD, so it sucks tuning my pids. Getting VERY hot motors on stock rates. Im about to just copy someones pids....
@kabab, great video. I'm going to try this tomorrow. if I crash I will send you the bill.😀
Will you be doing a part 2?
I was planning to but tuning has become very complicated these days and there's no easy way to explain it. It has more to do with filter settings than actual PID tuning. The best way I have found so far is just to use emu flight and run it on defaults
@@Kabab I see. Okay. Thank you for the response.
FPV_Arthur if you have Jello in your video, you should probably swap props.
could you do one tune in the feild to show us your method would be a good vid cheers
I tried to go to 2/2 but it won't arm although CPU load looks ok (like 30%).
Thank you 4 your help.
Really? Minimum 4K gyro and PID loop? Mr. Steele flies KISS at 1k loop time... how is his tune so right then?
Kiss is very very different. It's nothing like betaflight and settings cannot be compared. Flight quality is another story. Go ahead and put betaflight on 1k see what it's like 😂
Kabab FPV I’m too scared it will explode :(
@@eduardotrejogaw nothing will explode. If you have an F4 and using betaflight, put it on 8k/8k. If you have an F3, make sure the accelerometer is off and you can rub 8k loop and 4k gyro. This is standard today. It has been for the past year and a half.
Kabab FPV lol I was joking 🙃
Will have to try your suggestion, I have one old quad on which I might try that, but I mostly fly Kiss now to me feels much better than Betaflight. Granted, I switched to kiss when Betaflight was rubbish and I’ve heard it has come a very long way since.
@@eduardotrejogaw at this point I believe you'd struggle to tell a difference between any of the flight firmwares
I can't get a good tune, my motors get hot when above 20 on the d term, I have everything softmounted, it also isn't very locked in.
Have you turned off all your filters? If so, turn the D and maybe stage 2 back on.
my motors desync at full throttle for some reason at 4k gyro and at 8k it wont take off, it just freaks out on the ground. my escs are the old xm20a which i plan to upgrade and they only do oneshot 125.
any clue how I can fix this?
Sir Jacob it's because of the limits of oneshot125. You need dshot600 or multi shot to be able to run 8k or 4k
Jakob Lindstad well, ill buy some new escs then.
xm20 runs multishot perfectly fine, no need to buy new ESCs
Benjamin Jansson what??? no it doesnt.
My big problem is the cc3d fc I'm running with libre pilot ....well and chew up props
Yes. You need a new FC. Choose any FC made within the past two years and it's fine
@@Kabab ya buddy I agree..Tho with the info i got from u and countless other's,over clocking & shear disregard of current physics I'm happy to say I'm just ripping as hard as I can get away with.but when I get a new qwad It will be much earned.thanks a ton.I'll be watching.
So pid tuning can be done with air mode on?Sorry im still learning.
Adam yes air mode doesn't affect the PID too much. maybe just the I but that one is very easy to tune regardless.
What modes to you have activated?
bro, help with my pid pls. i always feel the same when making any changes on P gain.
is it possible to tune out the bumps you get from a bit of wind?
Yes but it's more difficult than most other things.
any tips? would be much appreciated, lots of wind here haha
There was never a part 2 ?
There never was because it's impossible to actually tune without dealing with the filters. Filters are more important than the pids. Far far more important
fucking awesome dude,,,,i love you
would anybody mind sharing what stock pids on betaflight look like I've jacked mine around & would like to restart.
Star Lord all you need to do is go to pid and look for restet to stock I think it says reset pids and that's stock.
Eric Dunlap I don't have a computer right now I'm dependent on osd only for the moment
Roll p44 i40 d20
Pitch p58 i50 d22
Yaw p70 i45
der Jakob thanks imma throw it on my biioottcchh asap and hopefully find a medium to my mayhem
good luck, im still working on perfecting my tune also
where is part 2?
I'm literally editing it now
Nice!
Bro Doc Nooooo !!! Its 6 2018 your flights show you know how to tune !
Lol stock! No tune! Totally serious! I might push a P up or down a point or two just to test. But otherwise I suck at tuning!
RIP part 2...
tuning in 2019 I think is the name of part 2 because PID tuning is still a load of who knows what's going on today
@@Kabab thanks doc. You and JB are one of the few lads that make this hobby worth looking into. and I agree, tuning hurts my head... I just don't want jello in my gopro! (I watched that vid and i think it helped a lot, I just need to try again with the ND filter that I got today)
@@TheBaconDeity jello is less about tuning and more about motors and props. A good ND filter will solve 95% of that usually
and just saw my x220s PID loop was at 2ghz gyro 4
Does anyone know the link for Part 2?
Tune P, then D.. then I.. works the best for me..
yep that's the order
This is like trying to learn another language, there is no simple way to xplane it,no one has a video like we’re chid gets it. I’m a real dummy, I thought building a Pid controller box would be the hard part. Getting temp settings for is guess and keep guessing still don’t get it... I just don’t get it. Once I ever learn it then it will be like talking English
And he never did part 2 :(
Because I never actually got that good at part 2 🙈. The current code is so good on default it's almost not needed
@@notkira_x try just increasing TPA
Ok ok look i understand wat every ting does but wat does the numbers mean like is it % or wat
no these numbers are not percentages. They have no units. They're just arbitrary numbers.
KISS FC is the best for me. Very noob friendly..
FlyQuad FPV I understand I also do not have that much time for flying. Family is first. Give it a try and you will see. I am very happy with BF.
I just uploaded a video with your hyperlight frame I would love it you could check it out.
Sorry, just found your other video:)
Your rates baffle me. So linear.
Rates are really personal. I look at some people's rates and they seem totally wack too. My rates are totally different than that these days. I run 1.31 and .7 super expo with 1.56 and .65 on the yaw.
My pids always endup lower than most peoples. I noticed your's are like this too. I definitely like the way it feels better.
I’m not normal lol!
Easier to understand than that guy who wears a dress .... good job!
LOL yeah I saw that too...
+1 Nice video, Bob
vvVFANGVvv. you forgot about the guy who wears a dress is also asking his viewers for money donated to his patreon account
I'm here to help the community blah blah blah...... now it's all about oh it's taking all of my time to produce a RUclips video. it's time for all of my subbers to pay me ..
bro I clicked unsubscribe so fast . hahha
thanks daddy kabab 💦💦
shit fam that was creepy as hell my bad i was high as fuck last night
Where is part 2?
Part 2 never happened because nobody ever figured out how to properly tune PID's. It's a lot more complicated than originally expected. Filters and other settings around ESC's and such seem to be more impactful than PIDs with respect to tuning.
@@Kabab well than if you could do a video about filters as clear as this one it would really help a lot of people I think 🙄 and me primarily...
@@gabrielwidmann there's a video called unconventional tuning I made recently. That would be that video
@@Kabab ho OK I'll go watch it then
