Shelby Flint Profile- Then and Now Pt. 1 HD

- Shelby Flint is an original. Her clear, angelic vocal style was the prototype for a generation of female songwriters to follow. In a Mirabella Magazine interview, Joni Mitchell said "I started out copying a girl named Shelby Flint". Music critic, Leonard Feather, declared her a "technically flawless" singer.
Parts 2 and 3 to come. In November 2012, the Shelby Flint Band returns to the stage 25 years after their last performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
Reunion Shows: Nov 3, 2012 Alva's San Pedro,CA and Nov. 15, 2012 at Vitello's Studio City, CA.
From her first recording in 1958 - her hits: Angel on My Shoulder, Cast Your Fate to the Wind, Mercury, You've Been on My Mind to her seminal all-star group in the late 70's-80's, singer/songwriter Shelby Flint has always remained committed to her own musical growth and emotional lyrics. She is an original, her clear, angelic vocal style the prototype for a generation of female songwriters to come later. Joni Mitchell herself said: "I started out copying a girl named Shelby Flint".
Her Jazz/R&B collaborations in the 90's with Gregg Karukas, Tim Weston and Mike Garson expanded her fanbase to a new generation of sophisticated listeners.
25 years after their last Los Angeles shows, in late Summer 2012, her longtime percussionist, Jerry Steinholtz and the members of her original group persuaded her to get together at former Wings drummer Denny Seiwell's house to play over over 25 of her melodic but challenging songs to see if they still felt the same about the music. They all did. The album they made in 1985 (The Oceanway Tapes) of incredible "new" songs was never released. This project, now entitled "Yesterdays" is being prepared for release and they will again take the stage at select West Coast venues to share Shelby's gifts.
With: Jerry Peterson, Gregg Karukas, Bill Bodine, Jerry Steinholtz and Denny Seiwell. Видеоклипы
Angel On My Shoulder....so beautiful it takes my breath away! Sixty years later!
Thank you Shelby! Hope you're well💋❤
Beautiful girl beautiful voice. "Angel on my Shoulder" is maybe the most hauntingly sweet tune ever recorded. I feel like it's 1962 and I am in the car going somewhere with my parents, and this comes on the radio. Makes me realize how precious those moments were. She aged so nicely too. Hard to imagine she wasn't a huge star. maybe she didn't want to be. Such an angel.
What a voice.
We’ve been fans of your music since the 80’s. Thank you for such beautiful songs and collaborations. It’s priceless.
Thank you for doing this video. This woman's voice is so wonderful. My first introduction to her was hearing the song Mercury rising on K-jazz radio. I just had to own that music, and loved every song on the album. Not enough people know about this wonderful voice.
Until yesterday I had never heard of Shelby Flint. I rushed to Google to find out if she was still alive - and then I found this video! What a dear lady and what a beautiful voice. To hear her singing 'Danny Boy' is such a treat!
Angel on my memory.
I love you Shelby. When I heard Angel on My Shoulder for the first time, it was so sweet it brought tears to my eyes. Love....
Every time I hear "Angel On My Shoulder" it makes me cry! Just this past Saturday night I was having a few beers, and I SWEAR I must have listened to that song AT LEAST 20 times in a row. I was crying with BIG TEARS the whole time.
lovely voice and lovely lady
I believe that very few women have that vocal delivery & tone in the history of popular music. Karen Carpenter & Shelby Flint instantly come to mind.
True. Priscilla Paris had it, too, but what set Shelby Flint apart is that she still had wonderful dynamics without letting go of her gentleness.
If you like Karen carpenter .check out a British chick named rumer...
I love her song called... slow..find it here in youtube
Thank you for posting. I have loved her voice and her singing since I was young.
Shelby is SO awesome! I consider myself to be seriously BLESSED to have gotten to sing with her, a number of times. Such a songwriter! Such a singer! Such a wonderful and beautiful heart. Love you, Shelby
One might assume the best vocalists are the belters who boast an impressive range, but here we see the true common denominator among the masters: control and restraint.
Flint is at once clear, smooth, mellow, sweet, flawless, and all while sounding completely effortless. I can think of few vocalists who have displayed the same level of technical mastery. Only Karen Carpenter and Dusty Springfield come to mind.
I've been a lifelong lover. I saw the animated films she soundtracked on VHS when I was a girl. She's had a profound influence on the way I sing and I can think of no better inspiration. My thanks to the uploader for including clips of her live performances. Incredible.
Shelby, such an infectious voice.
We had very little money when I was a kid, so I didn't buy many records new - but when i heard "Angel on My Shoulder" I ran right out and spent the buck on one of only about a dozen new-release 45s I bought before heading off for college. Shelby, your music made a huge difference in my life. Thank you!
Shelby Flint's beautiful song Someone's Waiting for You from the Rescuers brings childhood memories back with tears in my eyes.
Loved watching this video. Amazing! So glad you are playing again. Jan
I loved and love your voice Shelby! Don't know if you remember me? Hope you are very well!
Angel on my shoulder is my favorite Shelby flint song.
Thank you for "reviving" this angel-voiced lady.
To have these music guys cheer her on was amazing.
She INSPIRED Joni Mitchell.
She is the real thing in spades - what a voice!
I had the privilege of spending some time with this very special and kind woman and her family in 1976 in Topanga. I regret not getting to hear her sing live.
The "Labour of Love" in music, there is no "retirement". It's part of you. Put it all together and that makes you a living symphony. Well done Shelby.
Awesome video, thanks!
Thanks, enjoyed this also.
Shelby, I still have the note you wrote to me on a Napkin and gave to my daughter in the 1980's when you were at the lodge in Newhall. One of my little treasures... --d
Kool Beans Shelby from a sixties Marine and college grad in the sentries. glass of red and your voice to soothe the rough spots since your first song.
How wonderful to read about Shelby and watch the video. I have an original 45 (Valiant label) of "Angel On My Shoulder" and often chord and sing this on the piano and autoharp. Am writing screenplays now and someday hope to include this song in one of them. The "B" side, "Somebody," is also among my favorites. Allen
Just listen to Shelby lovely voice should have heard of you before grate singer Graham w will be looking out for some more of your songs
Working at Disney I was invited to the Rescuers premier at the Studio, and got to hear Shelby perform her Academy Award nominated hit. Of course Donte's and the Blah Blah were great evenings with she and her band performed. I recently saw a William Holden movie that Shelby sang the theme for and reopened my door to a discovery of her again. Hope to see her in a live setting soon.
That film was called Breezy I believe from 1973, also with Kay Lenz.
How did you get Denny Seiwell (ex-Paul McCartney & Wings)?
nice voice ! Compliments !
Shelby how are you old friend. Listening to you gives me goosebumps just like it did 40 years ago. Hope you're doing well, your old friend, Larry Keen
She was great and still is
