This movie was destroyed to be thrown several times - thanks to me for saving it 😅. But the truth is, I'm not the saddest at the time of this song - but at the time Charlie sings about Snoopy leaving - that's for me the real sadness - the whole movie actually 😢. I wish I had a tape drive so I could watch the movie again.

Snoopy Come Home was one of the only movies my grandmother used to own. I probably watched it a hundred times with her--she passed away a few years ago, and the wave of nostalgia that just hit me was staggering. I could smell the soap and woodsmoke from her home. And the lyrics mean so much more now that I'm older. Time passes so quickly.

I grew up watching this movie and never thought much about this song until I was an adult. My mother was heavily into drugs and ended up in the hospital half way across the country with nobody there with her as most of my family cut her off at that point. I just remember thinking of this scene when I found out, and just imagining her looking out the window waiting for anyone to come see her. I managed to visit her before she passed. It was really difficult and this song has reminded me of her ever since.

      Revelation 21:1-7
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Back in late July.early August my wife was hospitalized with an acute GI condition. She was in for a week and it got harder every night when I had to leave. This scene came to mind the first night and I pictured her as Lila looking down from her window. Yeah, that tore at my heart, I thought I was going to lose her and it scared the Hell out of me. There were a few setbacks and other contingencies during her hospital stay and the following weeks, but she's home with me now. :-)

Due to this song and scene being really rough to sit thru, I only put it on when I need to grieve for the loss of something. In recent months, I lost a pet Bunny that helped me get thru the pandemic, loneliness, separation, divorce and then to lose him to an illness after 5 and half years devasted me, but at least I can say I got about 6 years of good memories with the bunny. I still have his brother to thrive on, who is the same age. Yeah sadness is tough and adversity can be overwhelming, but I am getting there and thriving. One day at a time. I remember this movie after 50 plus years. They don't make cartoons like this anymore. Glad to have lived thru the 1970s as a kid.

All this song does is make me remember when I was 6 and my dad asked to sell my pet goat spot. Trying to be a big girl I said yes... then had this song stuck in my head for 3 days crying for my dear spot... then My dad went back, hat in hand, asking the mister “I’m sorry but I need that goat back, my little girl really misses her pet.” Now this song has switched over to my dog of 11 years who’s battling a run over injury. She’s 12 and such a tough old bird. I don’t know why I’m crying so much for her, she survived and is recovering so well.

I used to watch snoopy as a kid and I always hated the 'No dogs allowed' bit coz it's animal discrimination which I'm very much against coz I'm a huge lover of animals (except spiders). And another reason why this is such a beautiful song is Shelby Flint's voice. She sounds so heavenly and angelic when she sings. She has a really soft, sweet singing voice as well. I'm going to quote Bill Murray here - "Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot? I bawled my eyes out." Same with this scene and the one where Lila had to give up Snoopy. Stupid landlord. Why couldn't Charles Schulz have made a movie or strip where Lila moved near Charlie Brown and they became good friends? I think that would have been a great story arc because both kids could be happy . Also, where was the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm - wasn't it close by to both Lila and Charlie Brown? That's another reason why Lila and Charlie Brown could have been friends. Or Snoopy could have found a girlfriend, had a puppy, then the puppy could have been given to Lila. It just seems that this could have been resolved to both kids' satisfaction. I realize, however, that Schulz was a realist and he realized that sometimes in life there are no happy endings. That's what made Peanuts such an adult, melancholy strip. From what I understand it was Schulz's unrequited love in real life that played a major role in the content of his strips. Still,I feel so sad for Lila (she got the rug pulled out from under her twice) and of course I also feel sorry for Charlie Brown. Not to be too dramatic here, but what a moral dilemma.

I wonder how Vince Guaraldi reacted when he found out that Charles Schulz, Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson decided that they didn't want this movie's score to sound like the tv specials, as they claim "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" sounded. That this movie, in the words of Mendelson, "needed more of a feature film 'look' and score." That Schulz wanted it to sound more "commercial" and "Disney".
Well, considering he still composed scores for future specials until his death, I guess he didn't hold any long-lasting grudges. (Or at least didn't let them interfere.)

It's a funny thing, getting older this song becomes a true tear-jerker that tugs at the heart. The music with the scene is brilliant, and you notice that Lila is alone in that hospital, in the Peanuts universe the adults are there, but never there and that impacts this scene of a little girl in a hospital writing a letter to Snoopy in the hopes he will visit her. They play this theme when Snoopy gets the letter and immediately sets out to see her.

I would have had it that close to the end Lila came home with Snoopy and have Snoopy indicate he would really like to live with Lila and Charlie Brown discussed Snoopy's living arrangements over chocolate milk and biscuits and have had Lila say she goes to boarding school and doesn't normally come home in the weekends because her family is at work most of even Sunday and have Charlie say "Well, in that case, I think it would be better for Snoopy to live with me and you can visit him and he can visit you during the end of term and end of year holidays."

The same year this film was released, my military family had to relinquish a lovely poodle with a pedigree after only a few months with her because we had to move from the mainland to Hawaii, and in those days before tracking chips, she would not have been well cared for if and when in quarantine, and would have been harder to locate. I was a toddler at the time. But my sister was about six. My sister cried, and I just said goodbye to our poodle the last time I saw her. We gave her to our neighbors, and never saw her again. A year later, we adopted another poodle-a male this time, and he was with us for the rest of his life.

With this song, I do a lot of crying too. A girl I fell in love with and I both met at a job I used to have and no longer want to return to because of what it did to both of us and an accident I had from July 18th of this year, resulting in a broken leg. Her name is "Peaches" and I miss her so much😪. The holidays are the worst for me and I have faced them alone, without her. I need her back and this song reminds me so much of her. I will love her, always and forever. 💔💔💔😪😪😪

It's occurring to me that Snoopy and Lila must have been writing each other since she knows where to reach Snoopy through the mail. I think Charlie Brown remark about Snoopy getting letters hints that they must have been writing each other for some time. I know it never happened but maybe Snoopy should introduce the two.
