It's actually based on a scene in the book where Aragorn bows to Frodo & Sam after they finally wake up in Ithilien once they've been healed by him after the Ring was destroyed. (The two of them were unconscious for two weeks after they were rescued by Gandalf & the Eagles.) Gandalf takes them to see the king, without either of them putting two & two together and realizing ahead of time that it's Aragorn, and when they get close enough to see him and realize who he is they run to him. When they get up to Aragorn he bows to them, sets them on his throne, and then says to everyone there, "Praise them with great praise!" They're a little confused by the King and all these knights in armor bowing to them because at that point they don't know yet that all of the men & knights there who are bowing to them & praising them are only alive because they (with an unintentional assist from Gollum, and great help from the will of Illuvitar) destroyed the ring before Sauron's army could slaughter them all. None of the men there expected to survive the battle, and they did only because of Sam & Frodo, and they know it. They are all very happy to bow to those two little hobbits. (Also, if the King bows to someone you probably should too.) It's a really cool scene in the book.
Same. The more I think about it, I realize that of all the races and individuals in Middle Earth, only Tom Bombadil, Samwise Gamgee, and Bilbo Baggins can honestly claim to have actually worn the One Ring and given it up willingly.

Re: Sam's return to the shire, it's hilarious when Rosie says to him something to the extent that: 'Youve finally returned now, just when things are getting dangerous!'... And Sam is so dumbfounded by this (after all that he's been through, clearing out a few thugs from the shire is basically trivial) that he is speechless! But, he promises to be careful. I thought that exchange exemplifies Sam's growth as a character and a man (Hobbit!) more than just about anything else in that chapter.
Frodo was talking to Sam's dad, the old Gaffer, but Rosie was there (and appreciated Frodo's praise much more - the Gaffer just wanted to know where his son's 'weskit' had gone...)
Frodo didnt tell rosie that he is one of the most famous people in middle earth and that they are singing songs from him to the mountains to the sea... He said that to the gaffer after asking if sam behaved himself and rosie just happend to be there and hear it.... Scouring of the shire audiobook chapter 50:00 to 51:30 just listen.

New subscriber thanks to the Hobbit Day cross-over! This was my favorite video of all of those. Even though I know these stories overall, I learned a lot from your narration, and your story-telling held my attention throughout. Well done!
As Brian GARDNER, I have always loved the line in the appendixes that says: "Sam the founder of the family of Gardner, later famous and influential." At one Tolkien themed party and dinner that I organized, I played the role of Frodo Gardner, "A great...great...great...great..." to which my friends at the party stated: "OK we get it." But I continued a bit longer: "Great...great...great...Grandson of Samwise (Gamgee-Gardner)!! Lots of fun!!!
“My friends, you bow to no one” is possibly my favorite line in the whole film series (I forget if that’s what is said in the books) considering the weight of what the four of them went through
Idk why but even from the beginning Pippen was always my lil bro. I was always rooting for him. He may have messed up some times (probably from being high on pipe weed🤣) he always came through in the end. One of the best things was in ROTK when he and Gandalf were watching the coming dark in Minas Tirith. Gandalf was hitting the pipe and started coughing. Pippen with no hesitation gave him a cup of water. Gandalf had always thought less of Pippen but Pip was still nice and respectful to him. Shows his character.
Hi :-) I don't think that Gandalf thought derogatory about Pippin. He was at times rude to him - such as towards others - but the key fact is that Gandalf suggested that Pippin should join the Fellowship, even against Elrond's council. And don't forget that Pippin was only 28 by the events of LotR. As hobbits reach maturity by 33, he was basically an adolescent. I think Gandalf was quite aware of this despite losing his temper at times.
Well he maybe get frustrated with Pippin antics, but you can see even in the movies that Gandalf took care of him and worries for him a lot, is just that Pippin is a trouble maker, but with a good heart
I'm very glad you did a video on this subject as it's great to see how our heroes went back to lives afterwards which some readers might only get the barest notion of if they don't read the appendices. Thanks! 4:54 On thing I'd like to know is whether the Gaffer's attitude toward Sam ever improved after Sam came back. In a way, it always seemed that the Gaffer-Sam relationship was like a slightly less toxic version of the Denethor-Faramir relationship. Gaffer never seemed to have anything positive to say about his son and even when Frodo tells how great and heroic Sam was, Gaffer finds it hard to believe and then proceeds to find fault with the mail shirt Sam is wearing. From the timeline and genealogical tree we know that Gaffer died one year after Sam was elected mayor, so do you think at either Sam's wedding to Rosie or at his election to mayor the Gaffer might have finally said "You did well, son"?
Awesom Stuff! Sam is an underrated hero of the quest for Sure! The quest could Not have happened and seceeded without him or Gollem. Gollem IS the Champion in the LODR!! He bit the ring off Frodo's finger and ultimatly went into the lava!
Hi Dave :-) Isn't it quite exceptional that a Mallorn tree grew in the Shire? I recall that the climate in Lindon that did not allow for your magical Elven woodland realm was one reason for Galadriel and Celeborn to relocate. Perhaps Galadriel invested some of her very personal creative potential (which is, as we all know, limited in Tolkien's universe and therefore very precious) into this seedling. (And a less likely explanation that comes me to mind is the idea that the weather in Eriador grew milder after Sauron's demise - there are some hints that the big baddies cause a cooling of the local climate). Oh and by the way, this is the second video (the first one being the one about Elrond) from your channel that I casually watch only to suddenly spill tears when reaching the final minute.
I hadn't really thought about the climate, but you're right that they wouldn't grow in Lindon, and the Shire is on the same latitude. Although there is a reference to mallorn trees possibly growing in Gondolin, which is way further north, and also really high up. I would guess that it's the soil of Lothlorien (and the magic of Galadriel) that allows them to grow in the Shire.
@@tolkienuntangled Thank you, Dave 😀 Right now I can't remember a related point - did the Noldor bring the original seeds with them? There were no Mallorn trees in Lórien before Galadriel's arrival... right?
Middle Earth is a great universe but the story of the Lord Of The Rings is by far in my opinion the most in depth, best written and most emotional story to exist. Like, I'm sure I'm not the only man to cry over the ending of The Return Of The King when the story in the movies finally conclude with Aragorn being crowned king. Sam is married and has kids then when Frodo, Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond and Galadriel set off from the grey havens into the west.
They all had families I believe. Except Frodo and Bilbo. They went to the Grey Heavens with the elves and Gandalf to live with them there. They no longer felt like they belonged in the Shire. Broke my heart to say good bey. But I knew it was best for them .
How wonderful to see our brave hobbits given the chance to heal from their ordeals and to live out their lives in peace, while also simultaneously making the Shire an even more awesome place.
It just goes to show that heroes can be the most unlikely of people which reminds me of a rule (correction, law) that should always be obeyed: never underestimate the underdog.
Sooooooooo I had to pick a new name to go with my new pronouns and I remembered this video, specifically the bit about Elanor. And it just felt right so I went with it. So thanks for that
Lovely video, Dave. I'm not sure we ever know the answer and if we did there's quite the potential for it to be sad, but is Frodo even still alive by the time Sam makes it to the Undying Lands? He wasn't exactly in the best shape, was he?
My guess would be that Frodo had died by the time Sam made it to the Undying Lands. Obviously that's a more depressing ending, but Frodo is 17 years older than Sam, and Sam doesn't sail West until he's 102. We're told that mortals age faster and die sooner in the West, and as you say Frodo wasn't in the healthiest condition after his quest. I imagine Frodo was spiritually and physically healed in the Undying Lands, but he wouldn't have had much time there. Obviously this is a less feel-good ending, but I think the evidence suggests that Frodo was dead by the time Sam sailed into the West 😢
I started crying... ended up grabbing a napkin... I don't think people realized how much love this characters cause in the hearts of the readers of JRR Tolkien.I think that is one reason why I am so offended by the Rings of power... it demeans the beautiful creation of Tolkien.
So when Sam and Frodo got rid of all the extra weight and equipment because Sam and Frodo thought there was no return and everything is to heavy. After this Sam is still carrying a box of dirt. Did he get "Quest items can't be dropped." when he tried to empty his inventory?
Tolkien's little joke...throughout LOTR Sam thinks of the "Happy Ending" such as "They all lived happy to the end of their days"...then he ends the story with Sam saying "Well, I'm back."
I'd like to see the 4 original Hobbit actors come back and do The Scouring Of The Shire. Then show what happens after that up until when Sam heads to the Undying Lands. Maybe an extended prologue or something. I think Amazon really had high hopes but them doing this story is going to fail miserably. They had so much to work with and missed the mark.
Its interesting that frodo is hailed as the one who destroyed the ring. But he actually failed miserably when he put the ring on at the end. The true hero was gollum. Its gollum's bliss of finally getting the ring, that the rig is actually destroyed.
This is exactly why people entirely miss the point when they say Sam successfully returns to being an ordinary hobbit at the end of the story. He’s only “back” on a superficial level, with his home and garden and wife and children, but internally, he is changed. He is never ordinary again, and eventually passes into Elven legend alongside the figures he looked up to for so long, vanishing into a place that no average person in Middle-earth will ever know or understand.
Good question. Faramir was living in Ithilien with Eowyn at the time, but I imagine they'd have gone there to visit. Legolas was chilling in Ithilien too.
So what happened to Angelica Baggins? The one Bilbo left a mirror to, mocking her vanity. I've a feeling this didn't go well. After Bilbo and Frodo leave, she (with her father and uncle) is apparently the last of the Bagginses. There is no record of her marrying. My theory is that she hung around Hobbiton, installing herself as an unwanted aunt to Sam's children. Since she is posh, I'm guessing poor Rosie lived in fear of her.
Who says Angelica always had vanity to the point of it being a massive flaw? At the time of Bilbo’s party, Angelica was only 20 years old, more like 12 in human years. It’s likely she was going through that classic adolescent girl’s phase of fussing over her appearance and wanting to look pretty for her crush. No guarantee she was still like that when she grew up. My personal headcanon is she ended up with Fredegar Bolger after he saved her life during the Ruffians’ rule over the Shire before he was locked up.
@@12classics39 Good points, but I think Tolkien means us to side with Bilbo. There is a comparable case in CS Lewis, known as The Problem of Susan, which has an entire literature about it.
Yes, the hobbits must eventually die because they are men, even if an unfamiliar type of men. I suspect, though, that in the Undying Lands, (1) their lives would be prolonged, perhaps indefinitely, like the Ring but in a more wholesome way, (2) they would be healed and restored to a condition like the prime of life, and (3) they would die at a time of their own choosing, like Aragorn. It is worth pointing out that, for the same reason, the binding of the Ring-Wraiths to the Ring would not have kept them in Middle-Earth after death. It could be argued that they might be kept on similar to the Oath-Breakers, and a video I saw recently suggested that if Sauron had won, the Witch-King might have been "rehoused" in a new body. I doubt it. His time to meet his Maker had finally arrived and would no longer be delayed.
When Aragorn bows to the hobbits I never manage not to tear up a little. It's so amazing a moment.
Ah man and then that concerning hobbits score kicks in its just too powerful.

So thanks for that
Awesome! It's such a great name!
@@tolkienuntangled well, that’s the most depressing thing I’ve read today. Cheers for that 😂
@@tolkienuntangled dang I always assumed that in the undying lands they just wouldn't die as the name suggests.
@@christianpanko6086 is the land itself that is undying and unchanging, but you still pretty much die lol
The "gaffer " not, Rosie said " I hope my Sam behaved himself".
Yeah you're right. My bad.
Can you imagine that grocery bill feeding 13 hobbit children..!?!
They likely grow their own food considering Sam's love for gardening.
@@elderscrollsswimmer4833 Perhaps.. they’d need about a thousand acres per child lol
I started crying... ended up grabbing a napkin... I don't think people realized how much love this characters cause in the hearts of the readers of JRR Tolkien.I think that is one reason why I am so offended by the Rings of power... it demeans the beautiful creation of Tolkien.
Awesome video!!!❤
Well done!
Ofcourse Sam became mayor. Half the shire are his children. Could have conquered a mountain with so many Master Thives 😅
I like to imagine Sam and Frodo where reunited in the end
So when Sam and Frodo got rid of all the extra weight and equipment because Sam and Frodo thought there was no return and everything is to heavy. After this Sam is still carrying a box of dirt.
Did he get "Quest items can't be dropped." when he tried to empty his inventory?
Good question. I guess you can explain it away by assuming he forgot to drop it.
Love the idea of Merry and Pippin being buried next to Aragorn. Cementing their status as legends and kings
Tolkien's little joke...throughout LOTR Sam thinks of the "Happy Ending" such as "They all lived happy to the end of their days"...then he ends the story with Sam saying "Well, I'm back."
Happy Hobbit Day! :D
Thank you very much. Happy hobbit Day!
The Fellowship, the template for every D&D game for the last 50 years 😊
Gah dang the hobbits' story endings are so emotional, by far the most emotional endings of all the characters in the whole story for me
I'd like to see the 4 original Hobbit actors come back and do The Scouring Of The Shire. Then show what happens after that up until when Sam heads to the Undying Lands. Maybe an extended prologue or something. I think Amazon really had high hopes but them doing this story is going to fail miserably. They had so much to work with and missed the mark.
My heart🥹❤️
They lay beside the King 👑
Happy Hobbit day!
Thank you. And the same to you!
@@tolkienuntangled I had forgotten until I saw your video
Awesome!
Its interesting that frodo is hailed as the one who destroyed the ring. But he actually failed miserably when he put the ring on at the end. The true hero was gollum. Its gollum's bliss of finally getting the ring, that the rig is actually destroyed.
Good one rainbow Dave
A linguistic tidbit: "Elfwine" is old english for "elf friend" :)
Sam is given the soil as well as the very useful magic rope.
Very cool video.
Well Sam also got real elvish rope :) The best in the industry!
Sam is my favorite.
Lmao "frodo gets the phial of Galadriel, and Sam.... Gets a box of dirt"
Thank you.
I'm not crying.... you're crying.
Did they meet Faramir when they went to minas tirith as well? i would guess so but Im not sure.
❤❤❤
Rosie waits one more year AFTER the war of the ring ❤
It wasn’t a”trip to crickhollow.” Sam was moving there with Frodo, according to the story they gave out. A small point, but still.
And Sam already knew that he’d be going to Rivendell with Frodo and wouldn’t be staying in the Shire.
