Thanks for the video. When I look for answers to my woes, I'm glad to come across videos like this. When I rehabbed my moms 1926 cottage I used Zinsser's BIN Shellac based primer on the bathroom walls and the kitchen cabinets. It was great at blocking odors, stains and wood bleed thru from the original wood cabinets. I painted mine on with a foam roller but it also comes in a spray.
This video was a lifesaver! Thank you!! I’m painting over my bedroom set (dresser, desk, all of it!) and the yellow started showing through the white paint immediately. I watched your video and basically had to start over but the shellac worked perfectly!
I just got a dresser from the 1800s, and as I prepped it (sanding and wiping down) I realized the old wood stain is going to come through white paint. Thank goodness I have this primer on hand already, pain in the butt but I just got to be done first. I hope your furniture turned out great!
Hoping this saves the day! Recently bought a house and am refinishing my kitchen cabinets. Used a wood filler on the old hinge holes first that says “paintable” yet it is bleeding through the kilz primer like crazy! Thanks for your video!
I’m having the exact problem right now. Were you able to fix it with the shellac?
Thank you!
I’m painting a oak table
for my friend and it does not want to be white. LOL
I’m definitely heading out to get some of this product.
Just in time. Ty Started refurbishing my baths n bedroom doors even after stripping, sanding n kiltz primer there areas that🤔🙄😞 wood bled through. Will definitely try this. ☺️Tfs. Have a wonderful evening.
Aww yay! I'm so happy I could help! I hope this little hack is the solution to your door woes!
Thank you so much for this helpful video on the right product and proper prep. and application. Greatly appreciated!!!
Those are precious! I've been waiting to come across these since I have the long dresser and a chest. They look fab!
Would u reccomend painting an entire peice with shellac before the chalk paint to avoid any bleed thru thru ?
Or if in the UK simply use Sikkens Cetol BL Primer : - It is a medium build water based primer with excellent adhesion properties, formulated for use as a stain blocking primer on timber species that carry a risk of extractive discolouration.
The minute I heard bleed through, I instantly thought "shellac." Yep...it's magic!
It would be easier if you seal the knots before you painted it and there you wouldn't have to repaint it,. Also that shellac comes in a spray can which eliminates the need for a brush. Also another product available is Shellac based primers.
It's probably more expensive, but I use the spray shellac on older pieces before I even put on the first coat of paint. I hate bleed through. It can ruin your whole day! Great vid, have you decided where you are moving to yet? 😊
me too always use as precaution for stains or anything and i have a piece that has saw raw wood and putty paintable putty and the wood and putty is bleeding through on a desk for my grandaughter im shocked and dont know what else to do as i used two coats of the spray shellac bullseye
Oh my WORD! This is crazy awesome to see this, I’m actually farm housing a table, six chairs and hutch we had in my family for over 30 yrs. It’ll actually be going to my daughters home but anywho...just had this issue yesterday. I’ll be at Lowe’s this morning to make this purchase...yay!
Thank you!
Another awesome video!! I love all your little quirks you put in it like the spongebob thing lol.
Love your editing style!
I’m so freaked out at the moment
I thought I was using the right product after I had bleed thru BuT
I used helmsman spar Urethane instead of the bullseye shellac
Will it work
Can you use latex paint over it? I see your using chalk paint.
great video, same happened to me, my furniture has wax, can i do the same procedure? or would i have to remove it first, if so, which removes the wax? Rellllp please
Can I apply this shellac first before primer?
I painted the legs of a entry table and started noticing spots of bleed through. Instead of spot fixing can I just cover the legs with the stain blocker and paint again? I can’t seem to find an answer to that.
Oh! Thank you so much! I only ever stain wood so hadn’t encountered this personally.
ps: gloop, is that a techterm? 😜 Mua!
Hahahaha it is! Or if it's not...it is now! 🤣
Behr has a chalk paint now. Have you tried it out?
😱😱😱 I haven't!! I didn't even know about it. I will have to go and get some now 😁 thank you!!
Shalack helps seal the bleeding
Nice
Is it okay to use the oil based shellac and then paint it with water base paint / seal with water based top coat?
Yes
Do you set it with shellac after you paint it white?
I have this exact shellac and chalk paint and I’m still getting bleed 😢 help!?
Dors Zinser Shelac work on stain bleed thru?
Does this give it a bad light line?
Sadly that doesn't always work i always you shellac to seal all my pieces for stain bleed and i'm working on a piece now that will not cover raw wood parts and i used shellac two coats heavy same brand as i always do any other suggestions from anyone
This was useful, thank you!
Grr... my project is exterior, so shellac is not an option. They make white tinted shellac too, btw.
What do you recommend to seal light coloured chalkpaint ?
It depends on what kind of piece you are sealing. If it won't be used a ton furniture wax is probably the best bet. Its easy to use and won't yellow. If it will be used and wiped down, I recommend polycrylic. Though you need to be careful about doing thin coats cause it has a tendency to yellow if there are thick gloopy patches. I hope that helps! 😊
I don't have any shellac. I only have polyacrylic, do you think that would work?
I have this same question. Is the specific product you used necessary for the results?
Polycryllic is water based and not a stain blocker. It is going to pull those tanins out. I recommend getting a gallon of stain blocking primer and painting your piece with that first. I just learned this lesson five minutes ago.
Does this work if the piece has been topcoated with a wax after chalk painting? The bleed through I am noticing took quite awhile to appear. I used Cottage Paint followed by one of their waxes (I can't remember which -- no longer have the bottle, but my paintstore knows ;) )
You mentioned oil paint you won’t get bleed thru with oil products
Thank you. I jus had this problem 🤦
Did this solve it?
Woodglut is a good solution for every woodworker.
Nothing show the bleeding or are you just showing how to paint a wood piece!
I made it with Woodglut plans!
Your music is so annoying.
I did it with the Woodprix plans.
