In my younger years I was a dedicated bodybuilder with massive calves. I could walk at speed for miles. Now in my 70s, everything has shrunk, especially my calves. And my walking speed is very slow. So I began working out with multiple weight bands and doing extended calf raises on my front steps with the very handy handrail there. Been doing this for three months and have put aside the cane. You have great ideas and insights to the reversal of aging and your presentation is spot on. Thank you 👍
So pleased to hear you've put your resistance bands and your front steps to good use and that you've witnessed fantastic improvements from your efforts! Keep up the great work ☺
My parents both turned 93 years old this year, both in very good health for 93. Growing up to now people have always commented on how fast my mom walks, to this day she continues to walk at a very good pace. My father still walks every morning 2-4 miles, he complains how slow his walking friends who are in their 70’s or 80’s 😅.
Your videos are so good. Clear, concise, practical, and your exercises are well described and effective. It is also your voice and demeanor that makes your videos so good. Definitely a cut above the rest. You have a grace and refinement and sensitivity that is not seen that much anymore. Maybe because you are from the UK. I am 76 and the world just doesn’t know what grace And intelligence is anymore. Thank you for your practical information and your delivery❤ and your service to people over 50
I have osteoarthritis on my left side - knee, femur, hip, pelvis, lumbar spine - it's a lot weaker than the right. When I did the first test I could barely raise up and had pain in my knee. Oh my, I have so far to go. And that's only the first test! So grateful for you Will❤
Great video. I'm 67 and I'm on my feet all shift at work, doing around 10k steps. I usually try and walk 5 miles after work and more when I'm off. My wife and I aim to walk at 4 mph for the first 35/40 mins, but usually walk an hour at that speed. We've been using your stretch exercises along with your calf/quad and glute exercises. They've definitely made walking easier.
I live in S.A and just had a tumour behind my eyes removed. When I was asked to attend physio they were surprised to see me doing so well as I am 79, guess what I told them, I watch Will Harlow. One lady who was with me in the ward looks after her over weight mother, and has now hurt her neck cartridges, and I suggested that she watches your videos on U Tube as I am sure you will soon talk about your upper neck which she assured me she is going to watch. Thankyou again for your helful exercises and keep on with the good work.
Yes, I will recommend these exercises to my husband. He is 78 years old with a kidney transplant 4 months ago and it has slowed his walking. I walk several steps in front of him and he is frustrated that I don’t wait for him. I only want him to walk faster and enjoy himself more. Thanks for your recommendations.
I’m 80 and need a lot of ideas and exercises to speed up ”the old man” Today I made 17073 steps bit mostly I walk quite slow with my dogs. 😅 Good night from a Göing in a small village in Sweden.
Yay, almost 73 and passed the test, although left leg is slightly wobbly. I'll be adding these calf exercises to other exercises of yours that I've been practicing. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you!!
I've been following you for months now since I finally started walking again after having my right hip replaced twice within 6 months. You've been helping me with the exercises I need to get my over 60 strength back. My horse had to slow down to a crawl for me to walk him on the lead. I have gradually gotten faster over the year but not at his normal speed yet like I used to be so I'm excited to do these exercises so I can catch up and not have to keep telling him to slow down and stop cause I can't walk that fast. Thank you for all your videos. ❤
It's great to hear you're walking again and that you're gradually noticing increases in your speed. I'm pleased you'll be able to put these exercises to good use, and I'm sure your horse will be too! I'm wishing you all the best 😄
I remember being told it wasn't lady like to walk fast! In the 60's we were told a lot of things that have since been disproved - often by doctors who smoked.
I think this advice is helpful even for younger ppl who tend to overlook calves even when if they are consistent in their exercising. Thank you for the video.
Much success using your exercise techniques: size 42 waist to size 34; 205 pounds to 166 at last wellness visit; able to get up off the floor by doing leg squats; improved balance. All that is great, but now I have a 'fanny pack' of love handles circling my back. Sheesh. Any suggestions? Perhaps a video on how to lose those love handles? Keep up the good work. You are appreciated.
Thanks again from those of us who so desperately need your advice. Worked hard physically all my life but don't recognise this woman I've become who has no energy or motivation. I'm 61 and have always been a fast walker (a bit under 4 miles per hour) but I got plantar fasciitis in my left foot and it has been a disaster. I'm lucky if I can do 2.5 miles per hour. It's the worst thing that's happened to me, worse than osteoarthritis in my lower back. My weight shot up over the last year, it's making me miserable and it just won't go away no matter what exercise I do for it or what shoes I wear. I swear it'll be the death of me. Thank you for all your videos, I do several of your exercises every day 😊
I was exactly like you. I went to a podiatrist who made some implants for my shoes. I am back running now 🙂. It can be expensive but definitely worth going for an appointment to see what they advise.
Same issues as mine. New Balance Womens walking shoes 928v3 works for me. A bit pricey but worth every penny. They can also handle the inserts that I use as well.

I love these two exercises! Im training for a marathon in 6 weeks and I think these 2 calf exercises are so much better than what I've been doing. Thanks so much!!!
I thought it was going to be sit-to-stand! Which is also important, but somehow I never get around to doing... I actually sat down to watch this video after doing 2 sets of donkey calf raises on the kitchen bench while waiting for my coffee water to boil! I started doing these after the last video, about walking uphill, but it was useful to have some reminders about proper form. I have learned that I need to make exercise like this as easy as possible, so that I actually do it - and the kitchen bench is a good accessory, since there are lots of times in the kitchen while I am waiting for something, and it's easy to fit in a few sets in between other things. These are excellent tips - thank you.
I have lost strength in my calves since my foot fracture and have only been doing seated and standing calf raises but my progress has stalled, and I am a very slow walker now. I will surely try the donkey and step calf raise to see if that helps me further. I really like the way you explain matters clearly and in an organized manner which makes it easy to follow.
S1 herniation and sciatic symptoms completely weakened the calf muscle so that walking speed reduced to a crawl. these calf muscle exercises have helped re-activate the calf and each day the walking speed gets quicker. So thank you Will!
Very interesting! I do simple calf raises which I've just started. I was recently diagnosed with peripheral artery disease and had terrific pain in my right calf when I walked, so was really slow. Luckily there's medication for PAD. Evidently it is fairly common. I've saved this video and will progress when calf raises get easier. Thanks again Will!😊
Amazing and brilliant exercise. I'm well over 50 and still dance and teach ballroom dancing. I need strong calves to dance well, many of the dances require a rise on the " standing leg". I do the calf raises to keep my calves strong but oh! My poor big toes . I'd love an exercise to strengthen calves and minimise the stress on my bunions . I'll be trying the power raise with reduced extension in the toes. But please keep these videos coming, they're brilliant
I have decent calve strength, I'm 58, but don't go up on my toes because of concerns with an old plantar plate tear. I was told it would worsen and that eventually my second toe would curl over my big toe and to keep it as stable as possible. So far that hasn't happened. So many exercises involve going up on the toes and most people don't give a work around. Other than the direct discussion of this type of injury, I haven't seen this addressed anywhere and I don't think I'm that unusual. I've managed some long distance hikes, I walk or hike everyday but make sure i have fairly rigid shoes, usually shoes made by HOKA. I have your book and appreciate all of the free content. Thanks.
I do the standing calf raise, I stand on a step barefoot, on pad of my foot, stretch down until my heal is below my foot. let the calf stretch then slowly press up with my calf while digging in with my toes and squeezing my calf and ankle muscles all the while. still squeezing my calf muscle I lower myself slowly until my heal is lower than my foot, stretching calf. then repeat 15-20 time for 3 sets.
First exercise - donkey calf raise 6:48 (Top tips 8:47) Second exercise - power calf raise 9:38 (Top tips 11:17) * add weights for extra challenge * TOP TIPS 13:03
@@PhilippaLings I believe that ankle weights would be practically useless for building significant leg muscle or strength, But I suppose they’d be alright for adding extra resistance for walking or running.

@@HT-Physio Hi again. Yes I have checked the spam mail. Nothing there. I did try it out in a later video you posted, alas with the same result. And I did double check my email address before submitting it.

It would be great if you did some of these for over 75. In my experience 50 and 60 wasn’t much different than 20, but after 70 I noticed a big decline.
Thanks for your time to make these videos: simply BRILLIANT 🙏. At 65, I’m struggling to get in and out of a kayak any chance you could make a video addressing this? Thanks
Fused toe, metatarsal pain , top of foot arthritis. Can barely get on my toes at all. Calves have really shriveled, who knew! No one talks about this! Help, what can I do?
Interesting. I've been on holiday in Thailand and I do find myself walking slowly most of the time. I have attributed it to the fact that it is a very sensory intense environment. I'm an American, so I rarely walk anywhere due to the way cities are built these days.
Thanks for a great video ... stairs have become a mystery to me. I realized that I no longer "know" how to lift my legs to walk up stairs or down -- like a disconnect of some sort. It doesn't seem as a physical thing, but more brain associated. I've experienced a massive amount of emotional trauma in the last 10 years ... would this have an effect on my brain and the way my body moves or doesn't move? Thanks
Thank you will for great information again! Sadly, I failed the test with both legs. I have slowed considerably in the last few years. I have had two lumbar surgeries and had a calf tumour removed (benign) in the last two years. I am thankful to be able to walk again. I walk 2.5 km most days and my speed has improved, but not near what I used to do. The first exercise does not work for me as my back is limited due to fusion. I will try the step exercises and hope this helps. I do need help with my balance and strength.
The problem with these exercises is that many people over 65 have big toe arthritis. These exercises put a lot of stress on the toe joints, which causes great pain in the toes. Are there modifications of these exercises for someone with toe arthritis?
I’m coming up to 68 and had a spinal injury about 15 years ago. My walking speed has increased a bit in the last year but is a bit jerky as if I was a wee bit drunk😂😂. I feel as if I was wearing heavy boots and the “hinge” that pivots my foot as I point or lift it, is weak. I take Magnesium Malate which has taken away the calf cramps I used to get at night so maybe that has helped. I’d love to have full strength in my legs again. Apart from all that though, I lost 2.5 stone (35lb) in weight and four inches off my waist.
Oh, wow. I see my future. 53, spinal injury last year. Slowly recovering, but the loss in flexibility, strength and ability to walk is disheartening. Glad things are getting better for you. Did you have back surgery?
@@moonhunter9993 No, the consultant said that because my spinal column was compressed a bit into the cavity, he’d need to put some packing under it. He said the risk could be that I could be left paralysed from the neck down and unless it gets worse, to just live with it. At first I could only walk by swinging each hip in turn until I got where I was going. It slowly improved over the years. The thing that makes me angry is that I wasn’t offered any therapy whatsoever. It’s taken all that time for the backs of my hands to stop feeling they’d been burnt. I hardly notice any of that sensation at all now.
Very informative video Will. I watch and liked every videos. I am 74 years male and play lawn bowling regularly. Lately I am facing exactly same problems what you described. Last exercise I have started regularly hoping resolving problems. What is your thoughts on lawn bowling. Should I shift to other sport? I had ultrasound and X-rays and there is no bone on bone but may be a suspected maniscus tear. If I rest for 3 days no pain but after game pains in both legs. Your opinion please? Regards. Parimal.

Great info. Thanks! I appreciate the variations you offer and the answers to many of my questions, too.
So pleased to hear the information and variations have been helpful for you!
Thanks for sharing 👍
Will, this is great. Have been doing the calf raises as this is a problem area for me. Thanks for these tips! 😊😊😊
So pleased to hear you're putting this to good use!
I'm so happy to know that I walk very fast and always related it to strength and good health. But this exercises are great for maintenance 🎉🎉🎉
Great to hear you'll be putting this to good use to protect your abilities!
excellent work I was Just stretching my carves down on a step for 3mins not going up and down thank u😊
Thank you for this information and yr exercises👍👍
You're most welcome!
It would be great if you did some of these for over 75. In my experience 50 and 60 wasn’t much different than 20, but after 70 I noticed a big decline.
I have been having a weak feeling on right calf I failed the test
Just now on the right side. Thank
You
For these exercises
Once again, top tips. cheers.
Thanks for your time to make these videos: simply BRILLIANT 🙏. At 65, I’m struggling to get in and out of a kayak any chance you could make a video addressing this? Thanks
I bought your old book a month ago. I wish Id known a new edition was due as I would have waited.
Fused toe, metatarsal pain , top of foot arthritis. Can barely get on my toes at all. Calves have really shriveled, who knew! No one talks about this! Help, what can I do?
Thank you so much 👍
Interesting. I've been on holiday in Thailand and I do find myself walking slowly most of the time. I have attributed it to the fact that it is a very sensory intense environment. I'm an American, so I rarely walk anywhere due to the way cities are built these days.
Fantastic just what I need thank you Will
Thanks for a great video ... stairs have become a mystery to me. Thanks
I've always felt a disconnect to my body and a bit uncoordinated but I've bn doing yoga every night for 30mns and it's really helped me.
I am 53 years old and it's a very useful excercise
Great to hear it!
I CAN DO THESE EXERCISES AND ENJOY THE BURN. It tells me that I'm being proactive in improving my strength. 😊 Thank you!
great advice and have pre ordered book. do you have any advice to stop legs buckling when jumping down from a step.
Great beneficial exercises. ❤
Thank you for the video. I'm a fan of your work.
Thankyou doctor for sharing .🎉🎉🎉💐💐💐😊

No, the consultant said that because my spinal column was compressed a bit into the cavity, he’d need to put some packing under it.
Nice video and easy exercises for aged group of people above 50 years 😀
Very informative video Will. Regards. Parimal.
Great , great video sir I am 71y
Many thanks..will try these...❤
Hi Will
I’ve attempted to download your exercise regime however so far I’ve never received not even in the spam folder could you possibly try again for me please?
I’ve also pre-ordered your book on Amazon
Thanks
I would so like to be able to come to the UK and have you treat my back pain. A long career as a nurse has done damage. I am applying the exercises for core, glutes and hips and have seen some benefit. I wonder what other exercises might help reduce pain T12 to L2 collapsed discs.
I can definitely feel the difference between regular calf raises and the donkey calf raises. Thank you 😊
Great to hear it!
Thanks, Will.
How often should these be done, daily, alternative days or weekly? Great info thanks 😊
When I walk i keep it brisk and "swing" those arms!
Thanks so much I would love to get the book but couldn't did not go through ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉😅
My podiatrist gave me these exercises for my torn archilles fibres.
Should one avoid these exercises if one has plantar fasciitis?
