Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Review | Too much tech?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2019
- The Porsche 911 has always been an analogue sports car. Whereas Ferrari and others chased the digital revolution from its earliest onset, Porsche preferred to keep things pure and mechanical. But such an approach was never going to be timeless and thus the 911 has had to move with the times. Packed with tech, the 992 version of Porsche’s flagship is every bit the modern sports car, but has it lost what made it great - can a car have too much tech?
Watch as James Dennison braves the wilds of a wet and windy Spring day to find out.

Very good presenter. Keep him and let him evolve...
Yes !!!! Always envolving
Hes a natural 👍
nice to see an enthused roadtester, with your talk of "claws" and "code" one can see that your your a TRUE petrol head and enjoy their job, well presented, old harry would have been proud of you at "EVO" !!!!!
Much appreciated - glad you liked the video! Everyone involved enjoys making them, despite the weather...
What a pleasant surprise! When you started, I thought: "Oh my gosh! They've thrown junior to the wolves..." And after one minute I realised I've been had: You are using irony, to get our attention- and then turn your own introduction upside down. That was very clever! And what followed then, was an intelligent, well-structured review that a lot of older reviewers would be jealous of. Well done! I'm looking forward to your next review. Hope there are many to come...
Thanks Willem - glad you enjoyed the review. Plenty more on the way so don’t forget to subscribe.
Thank you Car Magazine. Such amazing reviews so far. James Dennison and the crew are doing incredible work. Looking forward to more quality content. Thumbs up!
Glad you enjoyed it! Don’t forget to subscribe for more 😊
Such a well spoken, articulate, insightful and knowledgeable gentleman. I disagree with only one thing here, and it’s a subjective matter so I’m not knocking the driver here, is the C4S vs. the C2S. I’ve ordered the C4S, and it’ll take the stall in my garage of my current 2002 911 Turbo X50, which is AWD. It is phenomenal, and the times you “need” that extra grip, that extra “help” up front, it silently steps up and pulls you through that turn, or on water, or snow, etc. It is, for me, really that extra step in handling all driving situations. But the tester here nailed down the capabilities and technological breakthroughs on this fabulous car. Cheers, mate! :-)
One of the best new 911 reviews. Plus I love how close to the steering wheel you drive.
Glad you enjoyed it - James is very particular about how he sits!
Short legs.😂
We are starting to see a pushback against over-engineered cars. What good is all that power if you can't feel it or enjoy it?
Hard to beat my '96 JDM DC2 ITR for feel or enjoyment :)
I changed my carbon ceramic brakes to iron for better performance while the brakes are cold.
Based on several reviews and my own driving of some of these cars, the braking power is no different from iron brakes, though the experts say the advantage of ceramic brakes is that they do not overheat like iron. That makes the braking distance shorter on the track.Jul 2, 2019
Very good vid. Pleasant to watch. Reasonable logical conclusion. Good job JD :)
Much appreciated!
Nice honest review love that car
Great review !!
Excellent video and presentation. Love the minimal use of background music. More please.
Glad you enjoyed it, we prefer to let the presenters be heard!
Excellent review. Reminds me of Tiff Needell.
Awesome content as always!
I imagine Porsche engineers sitting at a table, listening to James’s commentaries, like the car is a personal poem that he gets and understands. They reached him. This channel should have several millions of subs.
Thanks very much Christian!
Great review!
Wow, one of the best car presenters I've ever seen. Well done.
Thanks Jagda, glad you enjoyed the video!
Beautiful spec. Great review.
Quality review and presenter, concise and engaging, stuck to the things that matter to a driver.
Bloody good review, James is solid!
Glad you enjoyed it! Don’t forget to subscribe for more.
Nice video, no time wasting with fluff, gets right to the point about the driving experience.
Glad you enjoyed, Mark. ☺️
Analogue sports car? Four wheel drive, PDK, turbos, four wheel steering, electric assisted steering, adaptive dampers, wet driving mode. I must be missing something?
My 996 GT3 was the last analogue 911.
Great review 👍🏻
Thanks very much!
Superb presentation of a great sports car.
i like this guy. he seems unbiased
Glad you enjoyed the video. We try and be as impartial as possible!
Great review and presenter, well done
Much appreciated, glad you enjoyed the video 😊😊 Don’t forget to subscribe!
Good review - more content please Car and where are the rest of the team? Worlds best magazine by far 🚗 🤩
Glad you enjoyed it, Malcolm.
Great video chaps. The camera angle does make it look like James is sat right up against the steering wheel though. 😊
Thanks Charlie! James does sit pretty close to the wheel, but we’re going to tweak the camera angle next time.
Thanks for the reply. I had ordered a new 2021 Carrera 911S and did not include RAS. I was second guessing myself. But I wanted the purist of the car. It arrives in January and now looking forward to it more. Many thanks for your opinion.
Agreed good presenter. Great energy and lots of info. Good job
Thanks Rob!
Stupendous car and an equally good review. Both Porsche and JD have clearly upped their game.
Thanks Rennie - glad you enjoyed it!
Good review but please change the camera angle inside the car, the camera angle is not good :3
This presentation wouldn't look out of place in Autocar's channel.
I notice a huge struggle to translate excellent printed presentations to the mobile screen.
Maybe the solution is to seek professional help.. Specialists exist for a reason - and Car doesn't seem to have one on board.
Good presenter..good voice inflection and cadence.
Thanks Kirk - plenty more on the way!
BLOODY HELL...............................car magazine, i thought it was extinct or has it just been relaunched ??????????
The magazine has been churning out quality monthly mags for a long time now, but the video side of things has been relaunched fairly recently. Hope you’re enjoying it!
Great review for a brilliant car
Cheers Florian, glad you enjoyed the review! Don't forget to subscribe for more.
Thank you
Nice pro review.
I've never understood the trend for coloured seat belts in modern sports and super cars. I dot think it works. I'll go as far as saying it looks naff.
I remember when this trend began and, if I'm not mistaken, it was with the MG Metro Turbo, back in the day. Enough said.
If I was buying one of these I'd spec it in black, or get a box of black marker pens....
Good watch 👍🏻
Nice review, but no mention of the one proper issue, the sound?
Sound, like color or shape, is subjective. We’ll all draw our conclusions on it. Keep the revs up and it sounds just wonderful.
Not sure that’s right Ron. It’s a nice sound it’s just too quiet. The particulate filter in the new cars robs much of the best noises.
What a fantastic Review 👌🏼
Thanks Joe! Don't forget to subscribe for more.
CAR Magazine already have. 👍🏼
Nice review. On the rear engine Porsche 911, does a person really need the “4”? I mean, you have the weight out over the rear tires, and traction should be plentiful in most conditions. And I don’t think I’d want mine out in snow or sleet, not to keep from hitting someone (I know how to drive), but because someone who can’t drive, could hit me.
We reckon the S is the one to go for! As you said, the all-wheel drive just isn't necessary with 450hp and the level of traction the 911 delivers.
I don’t “want” to be in snow or sleet, or driving rain, etc. But I have, in my life, experienced many unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances where that extra drive capability up front was dearly appreciated. Kind of like the rear window wiper. Who needs that? No one, except for when the weather and weather conditions declare otherwise.
Great review of what used to be a great car. The current 911 has way to much technology nonsense going on. It is so complicated now that not even Porsche can fix its own car. Porsche had to buy back not, one but two 911's from Nick Murray because not even Porsche could fix a Porsche. The 996 is looking better each day.
My 2002 911Turbo (X-50!) is for sale for $55K. Speed Yellow, carbon fiber package, etc. My new chariot, the 992 C4S is just a little over a month from coming into my garage.
Well, I’ve had five from the 991.1 onwards, and over 300,000 miles of faultless driving … apart from 3 flat tyres. I’d never touch any other marque.
@@MoJoAssets Lucky you. On the Renlist forum the other owners are not so lucky.
Great car. Seems it's so good you've got to suggest it has flaws, then praise it's greatness. Nothing in words can describe the acceleration off the line. It's insane 🙃
Excellent reviewer with wonderful use of language
Thanks! More on the way...
911 review is intriguing. Why carbon brakes on a non S model? Too pricey an option for the non S model. IMO
This is an S model, or are we missing your point?
tiff needell’s protege
My goodness it feels like this car will never be released in the states
Tell me about it. My new C4S is sitting on the dock in Houston, TX for 30 days in Customs. It’ll be released from Customs on Aug 26th, but Porsche Corp. won’t allow the dealers to give us our new cars until one month after that date!
Ron Stopfer só yours will be one of the first to arrive! I’ve heard 9/6 is the official launch date in the US. Hopefully it’ll be then. What color did you get?
Poetic review
As an old-school reader of Car magazine, from back in the day, I must say, I quite enjoyed this.
It's refreshing to have a car-focused review, rather than some wannabe 'comedian' who's more interested in his own ego than actually being a motoring journalist.
Keep it up, and I know it's three years old now, but do not go down the Woke rabbit hole in future videos. A journalist's credentials are more important than skin colour or sexuality.
Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
My son has a 992 c4s but i still like my 991.1 c2s better...yes, its bit slower but something about the n/a eng
Your close but 0 to 60 time tested is 3 seconds flat....Wait for the GTS model
i see young jermy clarkson here ...
Just not quite as tall...
Great presenter!
So what is the character of the 4S over the 2S? Deader steering and that’s all?
I just can’t see someone in their right mind spending 120k on any Carrera. Look at what else is available for that money.
I’d like to see Porsche release an analogue car - perhaps still with turbo to meet regs- but with a proper gearbox, no horrible digital gauges, direct suspension etc.
He looks a bit like a British Pete Campbell
great review ...Stop yelling we are 6 feet away.
Sorry I thought mistakenly this was a base 911 and not the S...I have too many things going on at once. Please accept.my apologies
No worries!
Resurrected!
The C8 just killed the fugly 911! RIP.
"Unpredictable conditions that we get so often in this country"...I sense an oxymoron in there somewhere.
So, it’s better than all of McLaren’s and Ferrari’s etc?
Quality review of a truly outstanding car and manufacturer leagues above the other stupid presenters on the tube like petrolped and the worse one shmee
Hah! Glad you enjoyed ☺️☺️
Iam here because of admiral general aladeen
The really cool years and best body lines were 1969-1973. I also love the 991. But as time goes on, the 911 mystique enthusiasts worshiped in the early days has been erased in favor of "too much tech".
The new corvette c8 will eat it alive . I love Porsche’s but they will have to rethink the pricing strategy...
No need. Porsche buyers aren't as concerned about price. And a C8 will never be a 911. Ever. It's only advantage is price/hp. But it will sell like crazy here in the US. No doubt.
Hang on - is it raining or sunny 🤷♂️ & why is a school kid driving a porsche 🤷♂️
Beetleything OK, James isn’t closer to 100 years old than some of his counterparts are. For one, I admire his youth and enthusiasm for cars. And his ability to drive this wonderful car, process the results and concepts in his cranium, and report them to us in crystal clear English, is admirable. This young man is excellent and is to be emulated by his peers.
Scotty Kilmer says don't buy one...
TwoWheelWarrior I bet ole Scotty would take one in a flash if it was given to him. LOL
Who’s nephew is he? Sorry but there are certain things that come only with age and experience. He can read all he wants about previous gen 911s but he was not old enough to live these cars. I owned the 996/997 and the 991.1. I did not read about them.
For example this 4S has already managed a 0 to 60 in 3 seconds flat according other sites. The key to the electric nannies is a function of how much control you have over these features. If you can disable these features entirely or partly then it changes the argument. The electric steering Is much better than the original 991 from 2012. Other reviewers have noted this improvement not this downside.
Lastly you cannot understand these cars after driving one for a hour or two. He is too young to have owned previous gen 911 models. I would prefer car advice from someone who shaves twice a month.
Ageist much?
Sir, I do not understand how your argument against James is based solely on his age. He can clearly translate to his viewers his concept and experience with this vehicle (you and I can’t as we haven’t driven one yet. But mine will be in my garage post haste as it’s now sitting in Customs in Houston). But James can certainly compare numbers and statistics between this 992, and he’s probably driven the 991 and 991.2, and perhaps the previous 997 and 996. Who’s to speculate on what he has driven, or has owned? I salute James for a job well done. No sour grapes on his age from this 73 year old Porsche owner enthusiast. Cheers, mate!
Ron Stopfer
English please!
To describe a car weighing over 1600kg,with electric steering, rear wheel steering, dual clutch transmission, electronic throttle, twin turbos, and other electronic "aids" as a "proper analogue sports car" is ridiculous! He clearly doesn't understand the meaning of analogue 😂
A great car it certainly is, but an analogue sports car it most certainly is NOT!
It's a product of marketing forces which are driving new cars into a tech revolution, and further away from analogue driving experiences.
For that you have to look back to modern performance classics....Good review. Wrong conclusion.
Audidude James’ point is it is a proper sports car. True enough, it isn’t the 1st generation 901, per se. Evolution, not revolution, is the proper description of these magnificent sports cars.
@@ronstopfer2315 Wha I said was describing this car as a "proper analogue sports car" was ridiculous. If you think it's "analogue" clearly you don't know what that means either. Look it up. Whether it's a "sports car" is debatable - in my view it's a GT. But analogue it most certainly is not!
I did not state it’s a proper analog sports car. I’m saying it’s a proper sports car and these changes over the years are to be expected. Some might complain about a/c, power seats/windows, liquid cooling, PDK, nav, etc. These are all welcome changes to me, and I started off my Porsche ownership with the Generation 1! Was the Gen 1 a proper sports car for that era? Of course, mate! Of course it was! We all have the option right today of buying the sports car, or any car, that we desire. For me, I want to newest, most comfortable, best optioned, best driving and handling car available today. To each his own, right?
Ron Stopfer er.....go to 8:38.....i rest my case....although I acknowledge he actually said "it feels like a proper analogue sports car", the description leaves the impression I inferred. I am in no doubt it's a brilliant achievement, and awesome car, but it's a heavy modern digital offering lacking the raw analogue feel of the 997, and all those before.
It needs more tech, they need to ditch the engine and gears and all the other old crap and make it electric ⚡️
Oh dear, another all electric, nothing else perspective. Heard of diversity and choice? You make yours well make ours, but don't stuff yours down other's throats.
All Electrics are for pussies - just like the Glideman.
Must burn fossil fuels in order to have cool sounds.
Fake engine noises are the death of a true car guy ~
Glideman Sir, that option (EV, Hybrid) are soon available. But I want a gasoline engine car in my garage.
This presenter is negative. I have watched Audi R8 and this both negative 😩
Getting closer to a SUV porky 2 ton weight loaded with useless rubbish for a sports car. It transpires Porsche is not a sports car company any more and besides McLaren has taken its place. An excellent example of More is Less. An icon taken on a wrong path. A shame
C’mon Car Magazine. I expect better than this. This was just a swooning advertisement for Porsche.....
Its cause it doesnt have near the power of the new C8 Corvette.
I’ve owned and driven 911 cars since the first 1963-1973 generation. I haven’t owned one from each generation, but I’m pretty well versed on driving them, not shining them and keeping them stored away. I’ve ordered my 2020 992 and will take delivery in the next 45 days. I can’t hardly stand the wait until I take delivery. I like the new C8 Corvette (maybe the first Corvette ever I’d buy), but my money is on the new Porsche. To each his own. Cheers!
Felt like a 9 minute Porsche advertisement. To me the 911 is dead. Pretty much lost its soul. Way too mainstream.
Agree, but it's not dead it's basically become a GT car. No sportscar.
@@000GunterGabriel000 Which is kind of what killed it for me.
@@Kaipeternicolas From a sportscar perspective the 911 line basically ends with the 997. The 991 was also too big, wide and artificial with it's rear axle stuff and so on. Car journos know that but they don't openly talk about it, but if you have a look what they drive in private it's basically very often 996, 997 etc
@@000GunterGabriel000 yup. totally agree.
I disagree with your perception of this, sir. Everyone has their own subjective for buying or not buying something. But the new 992 has a LONG, LONG waiting list for their new owners. Ask me how I know!
who is this child
That is, in my opinion, unwarranted and without cause. Although I’m pushing 74 now, I respect this gentleman for his good work. Cheers, sir.
Best? Really? Please don’t embarrass yourself with such flimsy subjective nonsense.
RUSSELL DEAKIN the numbers are not “subjective”. This 992 beats it forebearers in every measurable way possible. I have no idea where you came up with that conclusion.
Ron Stopfer No Ron....this driver implies it’s the best car ever. I’m sure it’s better than it’s replicated forebears mind!
FWIW, he’s not the first person write that on this 992 car. Mine is in country (Houston, TX) for the next week , then it goes to my dealer in KC for prep and official release date from Porsche. You know, everyone has their own cup of tea, and many have said ‘this car or that’ as being the best car ever. You never know, RUSS. You never know! That’s his, and others’ opinion, and it well be mine.
Man these 992s are ugly! Make the 991 look good. 997 last of the real 911s.
Greg S Put your beer down, mate. LOL
That shit aint a dime worth more than $45k if you can get now a mid-engine Corvette supercar for under 60k. The 911 looks inferior to the Corvette in every way. I see the Porsche 911 turbo selling for 55k fully loaded any day now if they dont wanna go bankrupt😆
