  • I have written a book called "High-Risk Transaction: The Ryan Coogler - Bank of America Incident" which breaks down what the bank and police did wrong in this horrible incident. Check it out, now available
    www.CooglerBofABook.com
Additional Body Cam footage released by Atlanta PD in regards to January 7, 2022 incident at Bank of America in the Buckhead section of Atlanta where Ryan Coogler, acclaimed movie director was detained for allegedly trying to rob the bank.
This clip is an interview with the teller, Erica Glass. Erica was the person who placed the 911 call on Ryan Coogler after he presented 2 valid IDs and asked to withdrawal $12,000 from his account. It was this teller who decided that this was grounds to have him arrested, and her supervisor, the assistant manager believed so as well.
Reserving judgment until I saw this video, I wanted to believe there was a tipping point where this went sideways. But as someone who was a teller and worked with hundreds of them over the years, I can tell an untrained, uncaring associate when I see one. Like so many people at Bank of America, the lackadaisical attitude with their clients ends up putting people in scary situations sometimes, and her lack of training, and lack of accountability make firing her not even worth the effort. This was gross negligence that could have gotten someone killed.
High-Risk Transaction: The Ryan Coogler - Bank of America Incident tells the story of a bizarre police-involved incident in the tony Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, GA.
Acclaimed director Ryan Coogler, best known for directing the box-office hits like Black Panther and Creed, went into a Bank of America one cold Friday January morning to discreetly withdraw $12,000 to pay an employee of his. How did he end up in handcuffs for over an hour, accused of attempting to rob the same bank where he waited in line to withdraw money from his checking account?
This incident set off a firestorm of angry comments on social media from those in the entertainment industry, the banking industry, critics of the Atlanta PD, and the African-American community.
Author James Baca, known professionally as “The Notorious Banker”, uncovers why the incident happened and how it could have been prevented. Baca is a 13-year former employee of Bank of America, including years in a managerial role and a consumer advocate specializing in dealing with bank issues for four years. Baca reviewed the hours of publicly released bodycam footage countless times to detail the flaws made by Bank of America in its handling of this incident. Why did it escalate from a basic customer request to a 911 call from a scared teller who had a thrown-together management team ill-equipped to handle the mess the branch created.
Baca intertwines his intimate knowledge of general banking procedures, interlaced with personal stories of workplace flubs inside the bank, and commentary on the state of the retail banking industry to paint a picture of a bank branch making an unforgivable mistake to a prominent movie maker going into the bank to do a transaction that you and I would do. Baca also discusses who’s to blame the most and what roles racism and the police had in the interaction. Like everything else Bank of America-related, it is hopelessly complicated.

The bank teller obviously has no sense but the cops logic seems off as well. He tells her that $12,000 isn't enough to write a note? I'm definitely not a rich man but are people just walking around with that kind of cash money in their pockets?
Also at the end Coogler voices his concern with having guns drawn on him for pulling money out of his own account. And the officer says to the other one "people will find anything to complain about". I guess I'm just soft butt I feel that guns being drawn me might be slightly traumatic, especially when you think of how many times that scenario has played out horribly.

Like I want the cops to be, I want the bank tellers I deal with to use common sense instead of acting out from some irrational fears. Everyone is supposed to be a professional. This bank lady is anything but professional in her demeanor by her quick jump to conclusion. Is the customer using common sense to ask the teller to withdraw a large sum of money quietly in a note? Sure. Is the customer producing ID? Sure. Does the customer have the PIN? The list goes on. At what point does a bank teller in this situation think he’s robbing the bank when if she had had proper training would indicate an unusual but legitimate customer’s request? Instead, she made an unwarranted judgement out of fears more than using common sense. The fact that her supervisor made the same determination is even more dumbfounded. The teller was clearly under-trained, not ready to deal with the public. Her supervisor, on the other hand, should have known better. The teller should go back to probationary period, while the supervisor should be fired. This is not some small town bank. This is a national bank with plenty of resources at training its workers. For this unfortunate and life-changing event to have happened to all involved, especially the customer who probably now has PTSD to some degree, there was failure at multiple levels. The only silver lining here is this can be used as a case study for training bank tellers. I should add that the cops acted appropriately in this case, with the exception of having the suspected bank robber in handcuffs for too long. They should have released him from cuff as soon as they heard that the man had produced a bank card, that his face matched his ID, that he indeed had an account at the bank with a large balance. With this preliminary info, it should have been clear to the cops that this has been a misunderstanding. As said, this is a learning moment for so many involved. Be calm, be kind, be open-minded, be smart. Don’t succumb to irrational fears.

How many times have a killer or kidnapper take their victims debit card and withdraw money from their account t. If they don’t use fingerprints to verify someone we can’t say for sure it’s 100% their account , we use good faith in this way. But there are a lot of no good, evil people out here… I think she did a good thing. Ryan coogler is a pawn. Wake up guys. For months there has been a weak agenda going around and advising people to take their money out of the banks, on top of that, I feel this was planned and orchestrated to prove a point of some sort especially since Jussie smoulets verdict was coming a month away. Ruth Ryan is an A-hole and made this poor decision on his own or sooner sort of political advocate with an agenda put him up to it. I don’t know any black men… or any one for that matter that would write anything of any sort on a paper and slip it to a teller then proceed to be non communicative and/or weird.. a mess I would sue his arssss for sure.

In all fairness a robber in Chicago last year 2021 did give his real ID to the teller. He was arrested and he was armed and told the teller so. However, the robber in that case did not have an account with the bank he was robbing. Most bank robbers do not rob banks they have accounts with. The average bank robber does not give their ID and they for sure won't give their bank card and pin. Mr. Coogler provided her with the information she needed to verify his identity. She could have asked him to remove his sunglasses and mask so she could match the photo with the person standing in front of her. I normally wouldn't want someone to lose their job. But this young lady does not need to be in customer service. She treated him like a criminal because she failed to do her job correctly. Then turns around and says she is not saying he was going to rob me. So why call the cops then? I feel bad for that baby if this is the type of common sense she will use with that child.

Meanwhile that same cop literally says "sounds like a bank robbery to me" as he's racing to the bank lights and sirens. She wants it both ways, wants to call in a bank robbery in progress then stand back and claim she wasn't calling in a bank robbery in progress.
