The thing I love about Horrible Histories is the groan inducing absurdities in history they rightly ridicule. But this song brought a tear in my eye because it is one of the few sketches that highlighted some truly brave and heroic men honorably and respectfully.
Always gets to me - there's a corner of my local cemetry with a lot of Polish fighter pilots' graves. I think it's fair to say that in the case of my city, there wouldn't be any of the centre left if it hadn't been for them. @@philbedford8979
I love the accents that Ben does! A Polish one here, a Spanish one in the movie Bill, a German one as George I, some American ones as Henry Ford and a real-life cowboy, the list goes on! He's so talented (and handsome)!
I actually got the shivers at the end when Winston Churchill's quote came on! And I cannot be the only one thinking how good they all look in uniforms can I ?
01:50 always makes me 😀 There's Mat, singing quite emotionally about the Battle of Britain and the RAF pilots' finest hour... and the other guys in the background running around with their arms outstretched, pretending to be airplanes 😀😀
Thanks horrible histories for an honest, funny way of dealing with the past. I am half German and half British. my maternal granddad fought against the British and was captured in England. My paternal granddad fought the Germans. It feels weird to have this controversy as own history. The past should never be forgotten but now we should shake hands =)
these guys were my childhood. i learnt a lot of history from them, this song was always my fav, it still is. thanks to the old cast of horrible histories for making my autism a little easier to bare
I am just overwhelmed by how brave you have to be to volunteer for air combat despite having artificial legs. Absolutely no one would have thought less of him for not enlisting given his medical condition. Or serving in the military at a desk job on the home front. But he did it anyway. Truly an example for us all.
He wasn’t the only one. Colin “Hoppy” Hodgkinson was another double amputee fighter pilot. James MacLachlan had one arm. I am certain there was at least one bomber pilot too who had lost a leg.
I know this is a great, fun song, but it sends a shiver down my spine. The thought of thoses brave pilots fighting off the Nazis really is humbeling. We owe them and so many others so much.
Most underrated show ever. It's fantastically clever and funny! It appeals to adult humour mostly even though it's classed as a kids show, but all the Take That references and stuff is obviously directed at adults
Douglas Barder is one of my personal heros, if only for the sheer attitude he displayed. On the day he got his new tin-legs, the doctors told him it'd take weeks before he could walk, to which he supposedly said "Sod that, I've got a date tonight"
You can really hear the respect they have for the men they are portraying too. Not saying they don't respect all the characters they portray, of course, but there's just something different about it in this song. I wonder if any of them had grandparents in the RAF or at least fought in WW2.
@@whatsanenigma Absolutely agree! That final shot always seems quite sincere to me. I believe Ben comes from a military family, so he probably does have family members who served in the war.
"SSCFPA thank you. SO much. You are a very nice person. I have just learnt from my family on my dad's side (they are Polish) that they haven't found anything that says anything about the Polish. Thank you though I've been trying to get some sense in to them for a while...
If this video is interesting to you, I very much recommend Roald Dahl's autobiography "Flying Solo" about his time in the RAF. This song will hit you even harder in the feels after you read that.
You can tell they really respect the people they are portraying. I wonder if any of them have personal connections to "the few", grandfathers or great uncles maybe.
The thing I love about horrible histories is that they do the emotion and sublime concept of history justice while keeping it fun to learn about. They show that a lot in this song- keeping a genuine audio clip from WW2 but creating a really fun song. It's a beautiful thing. I love horrible histories with all my heart!
My paternal great grandma was British. She lived through both world wars. During ww2, a German bomb fell threw her roof and she got lucky. The toughest human being throughout my family line. 2nd toughest, her daughter. My grandma. Words cannot describe the debt that I owe to both those women.
I'm a 34 year old guy and I thought this was brilliant too. Had never heard of the show and have been watching clips today, just blown away by what a great, fun (and at times genuinely hilarious) show it is. A fantastic way for kids to learn, and pretty darn fun for us adults too. I've learned heaps just watching these clips, in fact!
On Douglas Bader's plane they have half a victory symbol painted on. Douglas Bader claimed 22 and a half victories during the war after he jointly shot down a plane with a friend. Impressive accuracy
You, speaking as a person of my nearest acquaintance, are in the perfect position to judge my commitment to the land of my forefathers. If to be a true German means to be intolerant, chauvinist and hated by all other peoples, than I am guilty of being a blemish on the well polished Pickelhaube and being proud of it.
My dad passed comment earlier, asking why at 21 I was obsessed with a "this children's programme" - then I reminded him that he can't really pass comment since he watches the Caravan Channel - but seriously, it's so compelling!! I actually LOVE THIS '_' .
The pilot names made me laugh till my eyes leaked, they’re so hilariously WWII-era British (‘Squiffy’ lol 😂) Goddam love the OG Horrible Histories crew, those guys are irreplaceable 🥺❤️
Absolutely! Imagine, having lost your legs but you enlist in the RAF anyway. When genuinely no one would have thought any less of you if you hadn't enlisted. Or if you enlisted but stayed doing desk work on the home front. It's almost beyond comprehension, how brave you have to be to do that.
I started listening to this song, and I couldn't help getting up and dancing and singing along. It wasn't until I started saluting at the end that I realised the curtains on the window were wide open :3 At least I gave the neighbours a good show :P
