Fun Fact: While Rodrigo Borgia (aka Pope Alexander VI) was well known for his reign of decadence and debauchery, he did had some positive qualities. In a time period of notorious antisemitism, he was quite tolerant of Jewish people, and apparently felt remorse for his sins near the end of his life, with him being in tears during his final confession.

    Lucrezia, Giovanni,
    Gioffre and Cesare
    Italian barmy army,
    The Borgia Family
    Our daddy was Rodrigo
    I had a monstrous ego
Where he makes trouble we go
    The Borgia Family
    Our tale begins Renaissance Spain,
    It's leaders were a shower
So I run out of patience
So began in my quest for power
I splashed my cash to all the papal cardinals in hope
    That they'd be bought,
    They were in short
    And I became the Pope
    More power than I oughta
    Blood's thicker than water
    Appoint my sons and daughter
    To run a dynasty
With daddy as the Pope I could do as I pleased was ace,
I'd kill a man who dared
    Like invade my personal space
I found a husband for Lucrezia
Rich Giovanni Sforza, do you love him?
Yes of course but love is power and money more so
    Now married to the Sforza's
    This opens up new doorsas
They world bows down before us
    The Borgia/Sforza family
Yes, and while we're at it we will marry son Gioffre
Aged twelve but so what soon will be
The Borgia/Sforza and the Naples family
    When the Sforza family
    Eventually bores ya
    With just annul the marriage
If he refuses to divorce ya
    Don't I get a say?
Don't fret, for you another man I'll get
    Alfonzo of Aragon
I like him this could go on and on!
You like him I've gone off him
His pretty face makes me wince
    You killed him!
    Yeah I'm the model for
    Machiavelli's Prince
Giovanni run the army but Cesare said
No way! I'll kill you if you cross me
    I might kill you anyway
I am the mostest powerfulest, evilest of all
    As long as dad's alive
    There's not a single chance I'll fall
    Huh aaaaah!
    Awww nooo
    We suddenly lost status
It seemes the whole world hate us
    They excommunicate us

Lucrezia died in childbirth in 1519 at age 39, not from old age. Cesare was killed at age 31 in battle at the Siege of Viana in 1507. Juan's (Giovanni's) body was fished out of the river in 1497, and it was believed that Cesare had him murdered. Gioffre died in 1522, but no cause has been discovered.

Theoretically, any Catholic man can be nominated as pope. In practice, the College of Cardinals doesn't look at anyone outside their group.

@@caiuswickersham yep...as a Catholic guy, I could be elected Pope, but it's much simpler to choose among the Cardinals.
Urban VII was the last non-Cardinal to become Pope...and we all know how that turned out.

      @moritamikamikara3879 2 года назад +4

Aye, there were a bunch of incidents in which people who weren't cardinals became pope.
My immediate thought goes to that one random ass monk that wrote a mean letter to the cardinals because they were taking too long (Multiple years) to elect a pope and so they elected him pope.
Had no fucking idea what he was doing because the pope was legitimately the head of state and had to do king-things (which is why Borgia wanted it) and so he quit shortly after.

It is so odd that I am actually a descendant of this family. When I first heard they were doing a show on Showtime about The Borgias, I was very curious because I really never did a whole lot of research on my ancestor's. After watching the show though...well, lets just say my mother's side of the family and how nuts everyone is. It all makes sense now. Something tells me if I went to Rome with my family tree showing my relation to this family, I'd probably be put to death...lol.

Brilliant brilliant song. The acting in it is hilarious, particularly Jim Howick (who looks disturbingly like the most famous portrait of Rodrigo Borgia) with his Marlon Brando inspired pope, but Mat Baynton gets a good few in himself- just watch his face when Alfonso shows up on the scene or the glassy eyed way (where only his lower jaw moves like a ventriloquist's dummy) when he says 'Oh no'. It's just sublimely silly

Naples wasn't ruled by dukes in those days, it was ruled by kings, and Gioffre/Jofre/Goffredo married the illegitimate daughter of a king of Naples, Sancia d'Aragona/of Aragon who was the older sister of Lucrezia's second husband Alfonso d'Aragona/of Aragon.
