My biggest regret was bringing a summarized version of the Necronomicon instead of the complete version resulting in a mistake in conjuring a dark master.
Instead of that I inadvertently conjured two bears and a section hiker blasting country music at the shelter I was at.
I will never make that mistake again Kyle!!!
Lmao what
#Priorities
i too have made that mistake
To think, with the full version you could have summoned a thru hiking buddy that only blasts melodic neo pagan folk death metal. Good times.
Stick with Santeria. Less involved and you can find a chicken anywhere.
Maybe not my biggest regret but certainly one of many. Taking food on a trip that you have not tasted before you take it on the trail. Long story short I had to force feed myself rehydrated mashed beats that tasted like dirt and tuna packets that tasted like soap. The worst thing is only having enough food for a trip and you have to eat only what you brought and it tasted like sh**.
Oh hell nah. Mashed beets? You're a psycho for trying that.
My only advice bro is to bring a good seasoning. I'm serious I use Kinders "The Blend" which is simply salt, pepper, garlic. And I'm telling ya man it helps alot. Cause let's be honest all of the dehydrated brand taste 😑 meh. Peak, mountain house, adventure meals, backpackers pantry, ect. All of em are bland. But bring yourself a lil shaker of ur fave flavor it makes a big difference. Also a lil hot sauce works wonders too. I just use one of this TSA approved 3oz bottles and I fill with my fave hot sauce and it's all Gucci.
WTF ever a mashed beat is, it does not sound tasty.
I hope I’m not the only old grandma aged lady watching your videos!
I think you are adorable and hilarious AND I do appreciate you bleeping your dirty words. Especially the F bomb!
Oh yes! I love Flossy too!
Y’all are great together!! 😊
Thank you Cindy!!
Not The only old G’ma here. I agree he’s adorable and funny, but not I’m bothered by the salty language!
@@tootsla1252 I too am a grandmother and watch all of his videos
@@KyleHatesHiking Your cred is getting shredded here 😂😉
I'm almost 60 and like Kyle's vids too!
Mostly sounds like going ultralight is just a pain in the butt. I've tried to get my base weight as low as possible (12.4lbs), but I'm not going to make myself miserable while I'm out there. No thanks.
It’s not really at all difficult. I would agree it’s expensive especially if you purchase everything new. My base weight was about what yours was and to get it to about eight pounds I spent a lot of money. DCF is expensive and so was a new quilt. That said I am just as comfortable as I was with light weight gear my pack is now just much lighter. I am older so pack weight is huge.
I like to hike. But after a few days I'm done. I truly dont get how these guys do it more than a month. We're not training for the Apocalypse here. Being uncomfortable over 3xtended periods 9f time...nah
Some UL is great but alot of things are worth the oz or two. Find the balance for you!
@@88WhiteRhino Yeah, the ultra light obsession, particularly the condescension and self righteousness that often comes with it is just retarded. The amount of comfort or convenience I've seen sacrificed that saved them a whopping 1 pound total? Not worth it.
Number 1 not bringing a camp chair. The ass pad isn't enough
I have heard of people getting base weight down under 2 lbs but they were so unbearably uncomfortable that they abandoned that extreme ultra-light backpacking after one or two trips. There definitely needs to be a balance of weight and comfort, because at the end of the day while pushing yourself is part of the experience, it’s also supposed to be a fun time out there, not being able to sleep, or being too cold or too wet is absolutely no fun.
I mean... a folding pocket knife is technically all you need, if you throw leave-no-trace out the window. Would have to make cordage from roots, start a fire with a bow drill, boil water in hand carved kuksas or animal stomachs using heated rocks, and sleep on foot-deep browse beds hacked from about 6 trees each night.
No one in all of history has ever had a sub 2lb base weight. Unless their whole kit was 2 stuff-sacks, a lighter, and a lip balm, that is.
My biggest regret was before I weight UL I jerked it around and cheaped out going light weight. I purchased a bunch of very nice gear that was never going to get me to the place on wanted to be, UL. So I now have a bunch of extra gear I never use. I finally bit the bullet and spent the money and did it right. I am at about eight pounds, thanks mostly to Zapcks gear and things are great. I am just as comfortable as before, but my pack is now very light. Hiking bigger miles in my 60s than I did thirty years ago and my body feels great. Less is truly more.
I did the same thing with the short cord charger on a long AT section hike last year. I bought a longer cord in town, but I am so cheap that I carried the shorty to the end (and haven't used it since). Waterproof socks are my new camp shoes. I can't feel the wet shoes through them, and I have all the support of my hiking shoes while I go slip-sliding my way down to the water source.
Fwiw, I wore my Altras in the shower at the NOC.
Yeah, I was that guy! 🙄
Man, I wish I knew about the hiking community when I was a younger man. Now I’m recently on my own to do my own thing and I’m looking forward to getting out there. I’m planning the ouachita trail and it’s right around the corner! I can’t wait to get out there
Let us know how you do! Are you going to do some video clips with your phone?
I use the mini as an inline with a pump. Love it.
I actually used a bivy in place of a tent for a long time and loved it. The best part is the ease of setup and takedown. I always hiked kinda late into the night cause I walk slow and it's nice to just throw the bivy down. But when it got hot it sucked and it sent it home and switched to a tarp.
Bivvy sack, iso mat inside the bivvy, no pillow is how we bivouac’ed in the USMC if it rained we would make a little A frame. The only time we got issued tents was in Bridgeport California for mountain warfare training center. One time in continued to dump snow on us, another time there was no snow just having to deal with higher altitudes. I was never a fan of MRE’s and if I knew we were getting trucked to the training sight I would cram a bunch of Chef boyardee cans in my pack. Stuffed like 20 cans in my pack once only to find out once we were staged and ready to roll out the trucks were not coming and we were doing a lil 11 mile movement to where we were gonna bivouc for the week on foot. Definitely regretted that since we were loaded down with ammo already
Were you one of the guys up on Mammoth Mountain learning to ski on ancient telemark skis? I’d always see guys out on the slopes from pickle meadows in their military gear and felt sorry because their gear looked like it was from 1950!!
i keep a couple empty wine bags in every one of my vehicles just in case i need a pillow, but i usually also have a camelback and a couple foldable canteens/water bottles on my pack, and those work pretty well as inflatable pillows
I got you beat. On my first section hike I brought not one but two pairs of blue jeans and nothing else for legwear. checkmate.
I almost spit out my coffee when I saw the 2 phones 😄 I needed that laugh 🐻
glad someone appreciated that joke lol
I don't get it...
i made the same sawyer mistake. not to save weight, but money. i figured, "whats the difference?" the water tasted great, but the flow rate was frustrating. my next outing, i'm just getting regular sawyer.
BTW, you're really funny... love these videos
Cholla cactus spines laying all over the ground make one good reason for flip flops in the Mojave. Keep a good clearance of cholla if you can, falling into one or running into one can change your trip plans.
Chiggidy check it
Sawyer mini - yup been there done that. I've had three different Sawyer filters, and they all sucked. Changed to Katydin Be Free, and never looked back.
10cm USB cable - done that. I actually don't have a problem with it. It works, although sometimes you need to get creative with proping the battery up.
Ditching the phone case - Done that. But my case weighs 125 grams. I wound up bringing a 30 gram Sea To Summit neoprene bag, that just fits the phone. It's waterproof and covers the screen. Phone has survived plenty of drops.
Camp Shoes Ditched - Done that. PCT SOBO in 2019. It was totally fine, not a mistake.
Good luck with the hike.
Doing a section of the LT when i was in my teens. I thought i was smart leaving my sleeping pad at home. Never again
I got burned with no camp shoes as a teen on the Duncan Ridge trail (blue-blaze off the AT in GA)…. Wet feet for two days…. Boots soaked through (I don’t think trail runners were a thing back then, for reference - to date myself - I had an exterior frame pack from Kelty). Never again. Used cheap flops for a few years and then did the 100-mile wilderness section in my early 20s…. Went through my flops trying to ford with them (so I wouldn’t get my boots wet)…. Big nope. Now I bring crocks. They are heavy as shit…. But so many uses. I cut weight a bunch of other ways…. I don’t compromise on my feet.
One of the best things about being female is that Dr. Scholl Foldable Flats (which are soft, stretchy ballet shoes) are a thing. They're cheap as chips, weigh next to nothing, fit in all but the smallest pocket, & make perfect camp shoes if warmth isn't an issue.
PCT….can’t wait for,your journey!!
Thank you!
I dont hike but watching your videos gives me incentive to give it a try. Those callouses on your hands tho, I did brick laying and landscaping for 15 years. Havent seen hands like that in a while, its obvious you use your hands alot
I'm a professional photographer who shoots in the rain all day. Weather sealed lenses and camera bodies, combined with any decent rain cover and umbrella will allow you to shoot in any weather.
Hit a high today of 98°F, sudden heatwave in SoCal. Hopefully you get cold weather when you begin your hike!
Wow, you were burning up down there while it was snowing feet on the trail here in northern Oregon and Washington. That's a crazy wide range of weather.
@@memathews it was hot yesterday and now it’s overcast this morning.
@@a.ramosakadrumgrl6677 We just got a"Winter Weather Warning" for up to three feet of snow on the mountain and 1-3" on the valley floor (100' elevation). This is pretty rare, but 2022 seems to deliver rare. You stay cool, well try to stay warm 😂😂
What do you think about the new platypus quick draw water filter versus the squeeze?
Tyvek over the thin plastic I have a few grommets in my tyvek. Maybe if you could somehow do that to the plastic stuff? Keeping it on the ground in the wind is handy
seconded .. tried polycro for one night, never again (Tyvek ❤)
I actually cut my DSLR out of my backpacking filming gear entirely. On any backpacking trips, my only filming cameras are two GoPros
My ul gear mistake was going with one ply toilet paper instead of two. Never again. By the way I scooped up some of those LMNT drink packets you recommend. The chocolate salt is amazing with peanut butter and meth sandwiches. Alright
😂😂
The Sawyer Mini is awesome for water bladder connections. Not something I use on hikes, but a lot when mountain biking or climbing. I have a Source bladder where the hose connects through the mini, so you can fill up 3 litres of water from any water source and then drink it straight out of the bladder while biking or while having it hung up in a tree by the tent or climbing crag. Nifty lil thing
This is how I used the mini as well. I never had issues, as long as I back flushed it regularly.
So glad we see movies and tv the same way lol. Im literally on RUclips all day
Movies and TV suck! Screw Hollywood, watch real shit on RUclips
@@KyleHatesHiking I agree.
Great vid and good point on the camp shoes…you might have convinced me to change my ways… 😎
🤷🤷
@@KyleHatesHiking I love my nylofume ground sheet though…I don’t think you’ll regret it.
I too made the Mini mistake and NO, it didn't get better. Love the standard one.
facts
@@KyleHatesHiking Are you guys talking about the MINI or the MICRO? All I've tried so far is the mini. The Mirco looks too small to have good flow it's like a little black pill.
Weather temperature is one of my worries on trail
Your neck is sooooo white
I can not WAIT to see it on about day 20 of the PCT. Gonna be EPIC bro EPIC
My camping mistake so far has been buying a bivvy sack with too small of a bug mesh and it doesn't exchange enough oxygen and I feel like I can not get good air
"I need my stove bitches" needs to be a tshirt!! 😆😆
lol good idea!
The Sawyer mini sucks switched over to an MSR hookshot f*** the weight man you got some water Pro tip guys if you're hiking where there's still water get a pump couldn't get my Sawyer filled in Algonquin Park heat stroke and passed out
ive started hiking in closed toe sandals for longer distance to not have to deal with the camp shoes / wet shoe situation. my feet breathe all day and i can go strait into a water crossing in seconds vs taking off my socks and shoes
Some of the motel hotel lights have an outlet on the bed stand.
A Bivy works great for tarp camping in buggy areas. Got that from Jupiter - And Evan. Both are tarp campers.
True
Ya...
A BUG bivy under a TARP. 😉
I thought Jupiter just puts a bugnet over his head while tarp camping
Hahah Don’t worry man, you nailed it! Be well and thanks for the ❤️.
Sawyer Mini works great for me.
Kyle is smart. I like him. I admire him.
Have not heard your thoughts on a lightweight umbrella. I just started to bring the Six Moons Carbon. Would not hike without it at this point.
Never tried one!
@@KyleHatesHiking you will need one for the trail your getting ready to hike. I think the Carbon model comes in around 8 ounces. Great for Sun as well as rain. Can't wait to see your footage from your first few days.
@@KyleHatesHiking you will need one for the trail your getting ready to hike. I think the Carbon model comes in around 8 ounces. Great for Sun as well as rain. Can't wait to see your footage from your first few days.
I will second this advice, either a sun hat to protect your neck or an umbrella like being suggested here will help a ton in the super exposed areas you will be in on the PCT
You definitely want an umbrella on this trail, it's like a sunshade that keeps your body a good 10 or 15 degrees cooler in the direct sun. Also good in the PNW September rains and snow.
Yeah, the Sawyer mini still sucks. That’s what I started with
Back in my Scouting days thought I decided to pack my light summer bag when going to Philmont in New Mexico. Its going to be warm in New Mexico in the Summer right? Was cold every night and was more sore shivering and in the fetal position than hiking everyday.
Been there done that! At least I had all those damn layers they make you pack!
Oh, man, that shiver-cramping/soreness is no joke, you do it enough. I feel for ya, buddy.
Could you please start adding timestamps to these videos? Or at least list the items in the video description?
I couldn't find my tried and trusted powerbank and borrowed a friend's last minute, which didn't work consistently. Only take gear you've used!
Man once you spend a couple long hot days in the desert you might just see the appeal of going stoveless. Nothing like a hot meal to make you even hotter out there 🤣
Fair haha
Less spicy food might help too
I cold soaked a meal in record time under the Scissors Crossing bridge. Then again, cold soaking meals took a record long time in the North Cascades.
@@russellinthebush2897 Isn't that called flash freezing in the North Cascades? 😁
Kyle I don't think you have a Nylofume ground sheet, you have a Polycro ground sheet... if I'm remembering correctly.
Nylofume is the material used in bags that can be used for bag liners. That's what I use and they are fine, no regrets. Wouldn't use it as a ground sheet. It's too small anyway??
FYI Nylofume is called "fume" because they are meant to be used to close up food and clothes inside a home when it is going to be fumigated.
^what cappy said and if your nylofume rips mid hike just buy one of those turkey roasting bags.. really fucking loud but they get the job done & cost like a dollar for 2
It's the lifestraw flex available in America? It seems every American outdoor channel is sponsored by Sawyer sqeeze😂
I've never used the Squeeze but the lifestraw flex is a great alternative.
“Non-discrete”... job done 😂
Would like to see you do a video with Taylor sometime--Vermont vs. NH!
I don't own it (I have a Platypus) but I have never seen ANYONE speak well of the Sawyer Mini. Universally condemned by at least five reviewers I've read/seen.
Did I miss you digging on cutting off the toothbrush handle?
I'm from Charleston, SC. I see you have the flag in the back ground. Did you use to live there? In some of your other videos, I've seen you with a Vermont shirt. I lived in Burlington 😃 Such a small world.
Love camp shoes just sandals sucks going down hill to water sources...
@11:39 predicting the future.
Kyle made his 1st "Dad Joke" plugging in that 3" inch charger that coulda gone wayyyy worse.
Did you use the Sawyer in muddy water and if so how was it?
Awww. Look at baby kyle.
Yeah, I definitely can see where the wicked short phone charger would be a pain on long-distance trails and thru-hikes where you're likely to stay in a hostel or some other kind of place with an actual power outlet. Personally I love the 3-inch charging cable for day hikes, because it lets me connect my phone to a battery pack in a small-ish pocket (either my pants pocket or one of the side pockets on my daypack) without having a freaking ridiculous amount of USB cord just all everywhere getting tangled in everything. Made the mistake of bringing along a 3-foot USB-C cord for my Webster-Jackson-Pierce hike last year, and trying to keep that amount of cord contained in a pocket when my phone started running low on battery was comically awkward.
Plastic airplane bottles of Everclear. Lightweight alcohol 👍
😂
I am so ultralight that I do not even take toilet paper. You can always find some stinging nettle to wipe with.
Unpopular opinion: There is no point in going ultralight if your overweight. I'm tempted to buy UL gear but then think I could just diet for 2 weeks, have the same weight reduction for no cost lol.
It still helps. I'm a giant fatass, but the UL stuff helps avoid shoulder pain. Or, lighter base weight means a bigger weight budget for important stuff, like beer or fishing gear.
@@johncase1285 for sure. I'm a bigger dude who backpacks too, always tempted to drop $400 to save a few lbs but always think hm maybe no junk this week lol. My main issue is knee pain rather than shoulder
My pump filter broke I had the mini as a backup
I like to hike naked and afraid. Clothes are pretty heavy, but not near as heavy as peace of mind.
What!? You hiked the AT? I don’t believe I ever heard you mention it!! Nah I love your vids, I have been binge watching for the past couple weeks. Although I don’t think I actually heard the reason for your dislike of Dan Becker 🤷♂️
He loves Dan Becker. He just throws shade aight
@@Tbonesjones79 👍
I love mine if it wasn't for me having it I would not have survived... I just squeezed the bottle...
The Sawyer mini is definitely better now.
Extra comment for the cause. ✌👍
No way you sacrificed the phone case 😂
Surprisingly, I actually liked this video. I’m all about flip flops or crocs for camp shoes.
I'm looking forward to seeing the pct footage. I'm not far from OR section F and want to hike that section one day.
Bring bread bags for your feet just in case.
Lol
i just keep my phone plugged in. sure the hike isnt AS great, i just walk around in 6 foot circles for a couple months but my phone is always charged... so.
I genuinely don't get how anyone can sleep without a pillow. I have a mutation of 1 extra vertebra in my spine, which makes my head->neck relationship distinctly "bobble-y" & if it's out of alignment while lying down, then I am not in pain in the morning, I am in pain _now_ . If I have no pillow, & 1 firm enough to legit support my Slinky of a neck, then _I just don't sleep_ .
And folded jackets, clothes-packed stuff-sacks, etc. simply don't have the height or resistance to do the job. I get that they work for some, but for me? No.
Naturehike makes a wonderful answer to the StS Aeros pillow, for like half the cost, & AFAIAC, it's just not worth it to go without.
Bringing too small of a camp chair is really a mistake. As long as you are bringing a pillow and an inflatable sleep pad, go all out.
Maybe a camp futon? 😉
Go Kyle Go!
🤘
Wish I had a rubberized sock
Kyle seems to love hiking... but hate camping. Too late for a name change?
I actually cut my toothbrush to fit in a certain pocket lol
Desert hiking. DO NOT SKIMP ON WATER!
I WONT
Don't understand why people cannot carry normal equipment or any weight anymore. Where is the training in going with flyweight gear..
Samsung phones are fragile as sh*t. I now run a CAT 62 phone. It's marketed to construction contractors, waterproof, shatterproof built like a tank and runs RF so if you're with a group with radios you can get in with them. Great dependability for trail apps, works fine with my drone controller. I only use any phone as a tertiary image/video device and the CAT 62 does great with video if not hand held and actually kinda shitty with photos since it seems to impart an overly sharpened/flat sort of look by default. Yeah it's a bit heavy but I'd hate to have one of my navigation devices fail cuz I slipped on a water crossing or fumbled it to a corner landing on a rock. Solid kit item.
I love my 6 inch cable
😉
Love you too brother, hope you have a nice time on the PCT!
Dude, bring the camp shoes. Always. For camp. For town.
Maybe
It is a cable, not a charger 🤦♂️
Ounces equal pounds, pounds equal pain
Hate my GoPro…worst camera ever…
Ultralight tip - carry less weight by not using trekking poles
Better idea - carry trekking poles and give up the "freestanding" tent (that you need to stake down in wind, just like a trekking pole tent). It's amazing how much less your knees and ankles hurt while using poles.
Wait until you hit 60 (plus, for me).
Camp Shoes = Camp Chair. Change my mind.
Ew
That's disgusting. Have some class. I sit on my pocket rocket
Yo yo kyle! Whatup?
Wut up
If a hypothermic hiker dies, they can't unsubscribe
Why the heck don't you wear waterproof boots instead of getting your feet wet for hours and hours?
It's really hard to take you seriously when you have so much footage of you so so horribly trying to wrap food in a tortilla. My guy you got this. Practice the burrito roll
Just be miserable. Embrace it.
- UL trash
Real ultralight backpackers bring straight Everclear grain alcohol. 95% alcohol, the most alcohol per ounce.
Multipurpose, too!👍👍
@@danielkutcher5704 yep, start fires, sanitize, get sh**-faced, get a mouthful and a lighter and it can replace your bear spray.
