As a long-time viewer, who originally subscribed for backpacking content, I very much enjoy the new mystery content as well. I don't see a need for two channels as I watch pretty much everything you put out regardless of which style of video.
I'm a pretty new subscriber and I think I found this channel primarily via the 'true crime' angle, I think via RUclips shorts. I'm not a thru hiker but I love the outdoors and am also a gear head (not an ultralighter at all lolz) so I've binged the hiking and gear content. My wife and I both like true crime and disaster stories especially outdoors stuff so I hope he keeps making more, his videos are really good at it.
I think the AT likely has a higher murder rate due to being surrounded by more people living along the way. Versus the relative isolation of much of the PCT.
Exactly. People are the danger. The more people, the more danger. However, people also keep you safe. If in need of assistance, you're going to be much more likely to get help on a well-trodden trail. It's a balance.
Yes, I agree. Assuming that the percentage of the population that might commit murder, or a crime that might precipitate murder is geographically consistent (more or less) then the deduction is consistent with the reality. Thus, the conception of “stealth camping “😊
The trail mystery/crime videos are unique to your channel. There are thousands of gear, resupply , trail towns, and how-to from using trekking poles to shiting in the woods videos . I still watch many of them, but the trail crimes and mysteries are a nice change.
Please do a video on Aron Christiansen, he is the man you mentioned who was murdered near packwood/goat rocks area. It was actually near Wallupt lake. And yes the people who did it are not held accountable for anything. They were related to a sheriff if I remember correctly. It has angered alot of us that live in the same county. Corrupt enforcement agency. It would be nice to put this on the forefront. Ty and love your videos ❤
BTW Kyle it's not only content (the stories themselves) but presentation of the facts and offering probable scenarios that could explain a persons action that really make your videos interesting. And a sense of humor helps any video, so go with your strength my friend and 200k is a reachable goal.
Totally agree with your permit comment. We hurried out to Utah last year when we heard Angles Landing was going to one. We've been trying to get into Yosemite for like 5 yrs now with no luck. And most of the lottery systems you have to pay just to enter, it's not the way our National Park system was meant to be. We did the lottery for Pictured Rocks 50 mile hike and got it 2 yrs ago. Every camp site is designated, and you have to carry your printed receipt as proof. 3rd night in, some jerks in our site with no copy of his itinerary. You're 30 miles from nowhere, no cell service, and we're the ones going to the group camp site! Now you have people reserving camp sites for weeks, paying for it, and only showing up when they want. Leaving empty camp spots all because these parks don't want to man offices with enough staff to handle to handle taking reservations and cancelations by phone. Sorry for the rant. It's a sore topic for me. 1st time viewer, like the content. In my opinion, the AT has higher numbers cause more hoodlums use it to hide out.
True. Plus the west is far less populated, so there are plenty of out of the way local fire trails, forest roads, parks, and BLM lands for ne'er do wells to use that are more accessible than the PCT, which would require more effort to get to.
I wouldn't start another channel, it takes a long time to build up a channel. I love the deep dives you do on the murder mysteries, you do an excellent job on them. Good vibes sent to flossy🌻👣
Ngl I’m more likely to watch your trail info/tips/packing videos since your channel has the mystery content! Because like others have said everyone does the latter videos, but yours is unique because it’s not solely mystery stuff, but you tie it in with educational tips on how to avoid situations like this and/or help others. Keep the mystery stuff on this channel!
I've been binge watching your videos. I'm a new subscriber, going through a difficult situation, and you are totally saving me right now! Thanks so much, I absolutely love your videos!❤✌🤙
I'm a very occasional backpacker. I got sick a while back and haven't gotten to do it much lately, but I found your channel through the newer true crime content and am loving it. Keep it up, I bet you'll grow and grow. It's a great mix.
Congratulations on 150,000 subs! That's got to feel awesome. Just try not to let your ego blow up. Im about to hit 10 subs and I can already feel my head swelling.
I understand how you feel about lotteries and permits. I do not like them either, however; having spent a significant part of my life working with National Parks doing trail maintenance, I saw first hand the amount of damage hikers can do not only to trails but surrounding area’s. Also the disruption to wildlife. Hikers who stay on the trail and practice environmental ethics do less damage but I feel preserving the wild-ness is more important than eliminating permits and lotteries. I think the AT has easier access to towns then most of the PCT and that alone can be why there are more violent crimes on the AT then the PCT.
I think having hiking exclusive vids and hiking mysteries on the same channel is a good idea for growing your channel. I was recommended a video of yours because I watch true crime/supernatural stuff and then I end up watching your hiking videos as well. And it's not like you're doing hiking plus makeup tutorials or something lol. It's all related to hiking.
I actually faded off your channel for a bit after your hike was over. I mean....how much can I really take in about hiking BUT this true crime stuff is amazing! I can't get enough of that content. What makes it so amazing is you giving your spin on it. Listening to someone who has been in those situations and can bring real world knowledge and experience to these stories is awesome!! Keep em coming:)
My theory about the AT is more "dangerous" because it is around more people. Within 25 miles of it, there are some decent sized cities along it. PCT and CDT are basically both in the middle of nowhere with very few large cities. More people = more crime. It's as simple as that.
Appreciate the coverage if Scott L! I grew up in his hometown of South Bend, IN and remember being a little kid hearing friends of the family mourn his loss. As someone who enjoys true crime and hiking I appreciate your crossover and concern for these stories that may fall through the cracks of crime coverage 🤜🏼🏆💫
Just submitting some uninvited input: I think this avenue of true crime hiker videos has just added another dimension to your channel. It gives it a little more dimension, diversity, and a refreshing variety. Splitting it into another channel would just limit you to very finite limitations on each channel, and also double the workload for you to maintain both channels. I would love to see the new material weave its way into a regular occurrence. It could look like maybe once a month dedicating a video to a new mystery, and integrate it with your traditional content that you release. Either way, I love everything you put out and appreciate all the new content you’ve been delivering.
Thanks for the answer, very interesting to hear. I 100% agree, keep doing what you’re doing :) I came here for the mystery and stayed for the hiking. Cheers
Love your channel mate, have been a fan of me ballen with my morbid curiosity lol. Live in Australia, never been a hiker but 12 years ago hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and it was only about 54 odd kms but with very steep gradients! Never been the fittest person but I can tell you that those 4 days kinda by myself pushing through the most beautiful of terrain was the best 4 days of my life! Makes me think of wanting to get into hiking more and your channel is really enlightening. Just wanted to say your channel rocks and thanks from Australia! ☺️
Love all of these stories! Lived in WNC in Maggie Valley for 4 years. Worked at a hiking resort on the AT called The Swag. Loved meeting hikers passing through. We sometimes fed them 😊 All the locals have stories about the AT and the Parkway. Never went hiking alone. ❤ So I also dig the hiking vids. Great content and relatable host 😂❤
AT definitely. It’s way easier to hide a body in woods like those found on the AT than in open country like you find on most of the PCT or CDT. Hell you wouldn’t even need to bury the body. Someone could be in a tent on the AT and their body mightn’t be found for years, happened to Geraldine Largay!
I like that your channel has both hiking mysteries and backpacking tips and tricks, gear reviews, etc. ❤ I dont think you need to split it up. I think its great as is ❤
I’m excited to see your channel has blown up. Your entertainment was worth way more than the 25k subs you had when I found you. Great job! Hopefully this means full time youtube for you!
I’ve been subscribed since before the hiking mystery videos, because it’s a dream of mine to through hike one day. But I’m also a huge fan of mysteries, missing people cases, and true crime, especially with a nature theme, as I spend a lot of time in the backcountry. So I’ve been really liking the hiking content mixed with the true crime/nature mysteries. Please keep it up!
I discovered your channel thru watching Everest attempt / disaster videos but now I'm planning my first backpacking trip! (I usually overland). Your channel is my fave I like ur humour. Please don't split them
As a fairly new subscriber, im enjoying how the channel is as is. Its all about hiking so thats what i wanted. Besides anyone can pick and choose which video to view
I found your channel from the true crime videos. But started watching more of the backpacking videos too. I really like the mix of both! It's unique and you don't get that on any other channels that I know of. I really want to go backpacking now!
13 murders on the AT. So I'm curious where they happened. Were they evenly spread out or clustered? Does the murder rate decrease the further north you get?
I like they way you're doing the videos. My guess as to why there are more murders on the AT, is the accessibility and proximity to civilization along the trail. More interaction with people who aren't hiking.
Agreed with previous posts … I too have watched for your hiking content , gear etc but since it’s hiking related I love the throw in mysteries on the trail / murder as well . Keep it up ! Love watching your videos. Thank you for all of your hard work
I became a subscriber because of the new content you started putting out. You really want your channel to explode? Start covering the documented unexplained, shall I say, paranormal experiences people have had. Especially on the Appalachian trail. Crazy crazy stories!!
Kyle do Sasquatch encounters on hiking trails and that will round out your whole channel! I see a million subs in your future! Love your work…your a lot of fun🌎☀️💙
You are so talented when it comes to researching and telling about mysteries and trail murders. I'm so glad you took this turn. I'm a new subscriber and I love your stuff!
Love your channel. I think if anything the mysterious videos should just be a segment. Still love your channel even though right now I am more interested in the mystery videos. But I will go back to your other videos as they pile up so I can binge harder
I admit, i never search for hiking/backpacking stuff but the YT algorithm suggested your missing persons stuff to me a couple weeks ago and i've been devouring your video backlog since then. Almost all caught up!
I love the mix of content. I get bored and love the variety still with the focus on the outdoors and hiking! Love the channel. I ended up coming back to the channel.
As a creator, always try new content. Appreciate you brother, been watching for a long time and love you are branching out! The algo, loves testing new stuff when it hits!
Non-hiker here, YT suggested a trail mystery video and I liked it and watched the rest of yours and look forward for more and am subbed for that content exclusively (though I've seen some of your hiking stuff and it's great!). As an avid indoorsman I like the true crime/mystery genre and really like your takes on stuff like that. Steve Stockton (at Among The Missing channel) does a lot of suspiciously-missing people videos, and a good number of those are similar to yours as far as people going missing suspiciously in national parks, and I like your videos just as much. I hope your hiker viewers don't hate on the true crime too much.
Crime data is all about statistics. 80% of the US population is in the eastern US. The A/T is the only trail in the east, so statistically it makes sense for it to have higher number of crimes but not statistically be more dangerous.
This is where statistics, improperly viewed, can skew or can lead to you an incomplete conclusion. Excellent point and I think this 100% relevant data with which to view crimes, well anything really, that go on within these trail systems. Bravo!
I did find your channel through your "Strangest Death" video about Park Ranger Randy Morgenson, but your hiking content interested me too, as I spent much of my life being an avid outdoorswoman. These days my health doesn't allow so much for that, so I get vicarious enjoyment out of your content. It doesn't hurt that you're easy on the eyes, too. As far as whether to make a separate channel or not, it's my understanding that it takes a lot of effort to build a channel like you have. That's the beauty of playlists.
I like hiking videos. I like mystery videos. It's all good. I feel like your content has gotten better since you hit the PCT. You're still your smart-ass self of course, it just seems like you have stepped it up a notch.
I could totally help with research for the missing / murder videos. I love doing research like that. I like both types of videos. As someone who hiked/rock climbed and did a lot of trails but can’t at the moment I love living vicariously through you. I have to admit it was the murder/mystery videos that got me here and looking at the stats on the videos it’s those that bring a lot of people here. You give the story and fact without delving into the conspiracy theories which is super refreshing these days. You’re also a pretty funny guy which brings a lot of people here too.
I am incredibly lucky to live here in NH! The whole state is gorgeous but the White Mountains are definitely a special place. I look forward to checking out more of your content.
I'm so glad you do the mystery videos because I love them--but it also introduced me to your channel and thru hiking, and now I follow a good handful of hikers and am getting to be a real nerd about it! I only do day hikes with my dogs so far, and I don't know if I'll ever be a thru hiker, but having a new hobby to be excited about has been great, and I love getting out in nature and watching you and others go to these amazing places and accomplish these amazing feats. 🙌 big ups my dude
Glad you are back in the North East. I can’t film videos too. You’re new missing hiker videos made me think I should do reviews during the winter or other “indoor things” I’m up to when its cold outside. Thanks Kyle - my favorite video is still Eagle Cragg. Thanks for the idea for the hike and it was awesome! 😊
Btw I’ve been watching Sintax77 for years and usually watch his white mountain videos since I’m from NH but was surprised to see the devils hike that you and flossy hiked with him too ! Awesome
My theory about the murder rate on the AT. The AT goes through more populated areas overall. The CDT is pretty remote in most of its 3,000 mile length. And the PCT while is in a more populated areas than the CDT is, still is mostly remote. And the access that people have to the AT unfortunately seem like easier hunting grounds or dumping grounds for nutters
I think the AT is more well known than the PCT. If you look at the amount of people that go missing not only in the PNW but also BC and the amount of serial killers that use and have used those areas as hunting grounds, it’s kind of shocking there aren’t any on the PCT IMHO.
Before I thru hike any trail, I always research murders and disappearances and map them out. I did it with my thru of the AT in 2016 and The Wonderland Trail in 2022. 2 people who I hiked The Wonderland trail thought I was nuts but once I got home I got a text from them asking if I could take a picture of the info and map and send it to them. Being prepared is better than being a statistic.
I think it’s only appropriate to have a thru hiker tell these crime/mystery stories. It’s always cringy hearing someone who isn’t a hiker try to explain this. If anyone is qualified it’s you my friend. Cheers. -Sweatsuit PCT ‘22
Combined channel, as is, sounds great to me.... no chance I'll ever go hiking but they are still interesting although the mystery ones have my full attention
The new mystery stuff is awesome. Not sure if you go to national parks a lot but I'd love a video on how to plan a backpacking trip what with backcountry permits and parking reservations and making your own loop trail
lol Bruins. Sorry. The evolution of your content is why you're growing. We're halfway through 2023 and too many channels just do TOP 5 GEAR ITEMS YOU NEED and cookie cutter trip videos.
I don't want to say who said it but I agree with him: if you draw a 2000 mile long line anywhere through the US, you are gonna go through a few murder scenes. Also now that you're back in the NE, you need to do a crossover with the ADKWoodsWalker. For reasons.
@@KyleHatesHiking I can make that happen, I have the inside track. Big iron will tell you that he's the real star of Jay's channel, but we both know the truth.
Found your channel because of the algorithm feeding me the mystery videos. Also happen to be a hiker looking to dip my toe into backpacking so happy accident🤷🏼♂️
Your content has been super funny, entertaining, and informative since day 1. I’m glad to see this channel growing. I think the AT could potentially have more murders because the east coast is significantly more populated than the west coast. Also, I would like to add that that statistics only cover known murder cases. There could potentially be much more unknown cases and situations where someone survived/ escaped before anything bad went down. I thought of this because I watch a lot of close call horror stories. Nevertheless, the AT is much much safer than most cities.
We need to be observant & any offhanded/aggressive remark from another hiker should be put on here w/full description of the person & also notify the authorities. Tell other hikers & your family if you've seen suspicious activity if you are hiking there!
I like the content mashup of your channel. Too much of just one thing gets boring eventually. Long term, you're better off with variety. Also I like not knowing what you've got up until i get here. It's like opening a present. But why did I sub? Because my son is also named Kyle and he really does hate hiking😂
There is a stretch of the PCT extending from northern California into Oregon that is "The Appalachia Of The West". The whole AT spans the Appalachia of the east. Population pressure, plus the "Hike faster, I hear banjo music" factor. At its midpoint, the AT goes through the unhealthiest state. At its midpoint, the CDT goes through the healthiest state.
Thanks for answering my question! Do agree with a lot of others and what you said about keeping both types of content on one channel. I don’t just think of the murders on the AT, but any sketchy human interaction. More chance of meeting people means more chance for crime.
I'm scared to death of the woods & hiking, but i like to watch your channel, it keeps me motivated not to ever hike. I am afraid of the woods, & i hate hiking. I wanna stay alive. !!!!
It’s due the AT being extremely popular nationally and locally. Also it’s proximity to a higher density of humans and crosses more roads for easier access.
It is time for you to hit the hinterlands of Vermont and get out hiking and tenting, lots of spaces up in the Northeast Kingdom to explore... great content, thanks... 👽👽
I think your channel is in a great sweet spot right now. I used to love Basecamp Chris he would hike to locations and then tell a spooky story related to that location. Then all of a sudden he was only telling Bigfoot stories, His channel blew up but….meh….and that’s all his channel is now. I think a mix of your original content with some of these interesting stories is the best of both worlds. Thank you so much for the hours of entertainment.
I hiked the PCT several years ago, in the first week I met someone, over the course of a month we'd leap frog each other, sometimes hiking for a day or two together. At one point he asked me the weirdest questions;. He asked would I rape a girl and kill her, or would I just rape her and let her go. He then went on to say how easy it would be to attack hikers on the trail. I can safely say that he did not go on to become a rapist or serial killer, but it freaked me out to realise people actually have those kind of thoughts.
I read and listen to stories about those unfortunate souls who met their end and or faced death to hopefully learn from their experiences or mistakes and avoid the same fate.
I personally really like the crime videos you make, but would like a more "focus" on what can we learn from this sometimes. Like what can you do to avoid this or that situation. Like how to avoid getting lost or avoid getting hypothermia. I think this would be a nice addon to not scare the new hikers from getting out on a new hike. A friend of mine actually stopped hiking for a while after one of this vids. Maybe good to remind people that this things actually arent that common. (at least in my country)Or make more videos about people who actualkly survived a really dangerous situation :)
As a follower of true crime, and oen who found an interest in true crime involving national parks and hiking trails after hearing about Gerry Lorngay (I probably spelled her name wrong), I knew the answer to this instantly. Not because I knew there were no murders on the PCT. It was because I've only ever heard of murders in Appalachia for hikers. I've heard of near misses or whatever, weird following, animals or feral humans, etc on other trails, but Appalcahia was the only one that I ehard of actual murders on. Scary, since I live near the Appalachia trail.
On the at its always close to a road and with shelters are close homeless folks with issues come there. When i did the at in 2021 saw them everwhere in shelters or close by
I dont like the permit/lottery idea either In the uk we aren't allowed to camp on many trails not that it stops us but wild camping is supposed to be illegal
I definitely think the AT is just because it's so close to the highest population density - like the same reason why the Smoky Mountains are the most visited National Park - SO much of the population lives within a reasonable distance of that trail.
As a long-time viewer, who originally subscribed for backpacking content, I very much enjoy the new mystery content as well. I don't see a need for two channels as I watch pretty much everything you put out regardless of which style of video.

Good luck on the AT Lee.
Welcome to the club....GL !
Be careful! May God protect you on your journey
I am jealous of the hike but $700 shit mine was maybe 400 tops and it's all UL..
Did you buy $700 of guns and ammo?
Your hiker mystery videos are actually what led me down the thru hiker content. Its made me want to start backpacking real bad. Keep up the good work.
So are you one of the future murderers or victims?
Same! 🙂

So I’ve been really liking the hiking content mixed with the true crime/nature mysteries. Please keep it up!
Keep it all on one channel.
will do!
Kyle , YOU’RE KILLING IT 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I discovered your channel thru watching Everest attempt / disaster videos but now I'm planning my first backpacking trip! (I usually overland). Your channel is my fave I like ur humour. Please don't split them
The AT partially runs between the two crazies, Ohio and the DC area, explains it to me ;D
hahaha makes since
Interesting content! Question to consider: How many people has gone missing on each of these trails? And also in other national parks?
Glad to hear that, like the content on hiking also like giving us info that we otherwise not hear about. Thanks 👍🇺🇲
They are definitely concentrated in the south, a few of them in Virginia, but there was one in New Hampshire back in the early 2000s.
I love both content! Great channel!!
Thanks so much Angie! Glad you enjoy both types of content
I like they way you're doing the videos.
My guess as to why there are more murders on the AT, is the accessibility and proximity to civilization along the trail. More interaction with people who aren't hiking.
Makes sense! Thanks for your kind words Teela!
Thanks so much, happy bingeing!
I admit, i never search for hiking/backpacking stuff but the YT algorithm suggested your missing persons stuff to me a couple weeks ago and i've been devouring your video backlog since then. Almost all caught up!
I enjoyed all of your videos! I am a section hiker out of North Carolina and love it. Thank you.
Don't split the channel. It's a good channel and I like the variety. Been here a good while so it's good to see you picking up subs.
Your delivery is honest and informed.
I don't think you should split your video content. We hike, also enjoy your crime stories. Sitting in camp chair rn ! Hello from New Hampshire 🌲
Hello NH!!
That's so nice of you to say! I try, thank you for watching
I am glad you have one channel!!!! I love it!!!!!
Keep on keeping on man! Came to the channel for the hiking videos and enjoying the mystery content as well!
That's so nice to hear Katie! Thank you so much, maybe you'll do a thru someday you never know!
Thanks for watching
I'm happy with your channel the way it is.
CAMP CHAIR CAMP CHAIR haha. You have the best content Kyle. Hope to see you on the NCT in Michigan some day. Keep up the great content!
It will be cool if you covered the people who have fallen from McAfee Knob.
I actually have had this exact idea in my notes for a few months. Great idea
This is your best video yet. Excellent job, well put together…
wow I didn't expect that! Thanks Ralph
The new mystery stuff is awesome. Not sure if you go to national parks a lot but I'd love a video on how to plan a backpacking trip what with backcountry permits and parking reservations and making your own loop trail
And a bear canister too 🤣
Starting the pct today heading nobo! wish me luck!
Good luck 🏔
Keep it on the same channel - it brings in the story telling skills you show in your trail tales podcast. Variety is fun!
lol Bruins.
Would love to see Woods Walker!
Watch some of the videos of “That Chapter” it’ll give you the answer to why there’s more on the AT then PCT.
How do you know he didnt go on to bad things?
Are there any alien abduction stories for the trails?
I read and listen to stories about those unfortunate souls who met their end and or faced death to hopefully learn from their experiences or mistakes and avoid the same fate.
I've never been or plan on going hiking. But I appreciate your channel, the mysteries and even the hiking too. 👏
When i did the at in 2021 saw them everwhere in shelters or close by
wait... you do regular backpacking content??
😂
I dont like the permit/lottery idea either
In the uk we aren't allowed to camp on many trails not that it stops us but wild camping is supposed to be illegal
I definitely think the AT is just because it's so close to the highest population density - like the same reason why the Smoky Mountains are the most visited National Park - SO much of the population lives within a reasonable distance of that trail.
