- Learn why the new Planet of the Apes movies can't ever connect to the classic films as we explain the sprawling Planet of the Apes timeline. Every time we get a trailer for a new Planet of the Apes movie, people wonder just where the latest film in the venerable series takes place in the Apes timeline. From the Andy Serkis trilogy to the original movies to various other offshoots, this is a franchise that spans thousands of years. And not just that, but it also takes place over a variety of timelines.
Basically, the chronology of the Planet of the Apes movies is a total mess, totally crazy, but also - and this is the most important part - totally awesome. So with the latest film in the series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, now here, let’s board the spaceship Icarus and blast off as we try to explain… the mixed-up, crazy Planet of the Apes movies timeline.
Ahhhh, where to start, where to start? It’s a complicated question when you’re dealing with a cyclical, if ever-evolving, chronology where there’s no beginning or end. This is time travel, people! So how do you even watch the Planet of the Apes movies in order when the end is the beginning and the beginning is the end?!
The most sensible place to begin for a chronological explanation of the Apes movies would seem to be with the most recent so-called “reboot” series that kicked off in 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. From there we can go to Dawn of, War for, and then delve into the original 1968 Charlton Heston Apes film, which spawned four theatrical sequels (Beneath, Escape From, Conquest of, Battle for) as well as a couple of TV shows. And yes, we will also need to discuss the time Mark Wahlberg went to Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes as well...

Its not that complicated. The older movies are their own series, this is a new series. Its a reboot from rise to this new movie. They are not connected.
This!
Its amazing how many people don't understand this. They made it pretty clear
IGN is dumb
They COULD be if you believe hard enough
They are connected the director himself confirmed it several times
ok. now where does Donkey Kong County fall into the timeline?
The kong is too strong for this timeline
The "so-called reboot series" is, indeed, a reboot series. That means the events in Rise, Dawn, War, and Kingdom represent a new timeline loosely based on the lore of the old movies.
That means these movies aren't strictly tied to the events of the original series of films, but we may see echoes or retellings of certain events.
It can just connect to the original film and ignore the other films in the original series.
Yes, that would mean there two ships called the Icarus. As for nuclear war that can still happen as the director said he would be interested in showing the destruction of the Statue of Liberty.
How dare james franco read a book in the shade of a tree!
There is no “Crazy, Mixed Up” timeline. It’s pretty clear that the new series is a reboot

Ape not kill ape.
Marky mark to Caesar “say hello to ya motha for me”
Youuuh MANIACS!
It should be noted that Rick Jaffa, the writer and a producer of Rise, was asked in an interview if the film was a prequel or a reboot. He said reboot.
Also the space in the original was never called the Icarus or given any other name.
Weird to bring up that you visited the set twice in one video. Had nothing to do with anything.
Felt weird yeah
It sounds like he was a big fan of the series and just wanted to mention it. Nothing wrong with that.
@@RobG93G So how do you explain squeezing in a comment about James Franco's attitude? This is a timeline video. So yeah, it felt out of place.
Seems the comments are more knowledgeable then you thought IGN you can't trick us...nice try.
What a wonderful day🎉
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY
Astronauts leave earth in 72' , rise of the apes starts in 2011, astronauts spend two years traveling through wormholes relanding on earth 2000 years later
The TV series is in a different timeline entirely.
You call this EVO

Weird dig at reading
Harambes final revenge.
Ghad Damit!!
Isn't our planet also Planet of the apes?
Dr zaius
They need to make the rise of man. LoL
Apes survive 300 years later
Also want to point out that Disney owns Marvel, and Marvel has the rights for Aliens, Predator, and Planet of the Apes--and are considered canon along with the films. The first couple Marvel Planet of the Apes series revolved in between the current Ceaser re-boot movies, basically filled in some gaps. The new comic series is heavily (origin story of the original Nova) based around the original movies. If they are still sticking with their canon M.O., then that may be a hint at the direction they're heading to. Just my opinion.
Its not marvel owned just disney owned
What's with the random Dbag comment? That was uncalled for.
Everyone apparently feels justified taking shots at Franco.

What's the point of mentioning your press day anecdote?
Its their video where they can talk about what they want, not to mention that's an awesome experience to witness so why not mention it; especially when it has to do with the series we are talking about
@@charleskiernan4900doesn’t really have anything to do with the actual title and subject of the video and just because it’s their video doesn’t mean they’re free from criticism when they release it to the world.
@@charleskiernan4900 Especially since the guy sounds like an actual fan of the series since he said he used to watch it every year growing up. Some commenters here are just uptight or something.
“Thanks Obama” 😆
Who here is watching this after that viral news article of the orangutan cleaning his wound with medicine.....😂👌🏿
1:59 wtf is this story
The first series takes place before the original film. Just because the plague happened in Escape doesnt mean it happens the same way in the original timeline.
Cornelius somewhat details this in Escape. The plague was the same. What was different was Caesar's leadership which advanced the ape rebellion and ultimately led to harmony between apes and humans.
worst explanation of a timeline just some dude going on a rant
Why do they keep making these?
Because we keep clicking on the videos to leave negative comments.
well it’s pretty simple, money
thanks obama
Why Obama lmao?
@@alexandrade7835 Obama is shown to canonically be president during the time of the virus outbreak.
