"Haiti had to fail". This is so true then and today. Of all the great historical self-determination stories used to indoctrinate me in my many history classes, the Haitian revolution was NEVER mentioned. The failure of Haiti has been solidified by NEVER allowing their narrative in any of my classrooms.
KH and Dr.Carr, please keep it coming.

Never heard him sing but he had a virtuoso command of rap lyrics and their application to the subject matter being discussed.
Imagine sitting in a lecture and hearing your instructor break out lyrics from the Last Poets, Kam, Public Enemy, Paris, NWA and making it relevant to the immediate conversation.
Some days it was like jazz improv.

They should not be conflated, EVER, since many instructors (at least 97% of the ones I’ve had) go into teaching for all the wrong reasons. Job security should NOT exist in teaching-it would discourage the ones who don’t belong in the field from entering it.

Since Dr. Carr mentioned CLR James also wrote about cricket, It would be remiss of me as an Indian if I didn't mention the documentary "Fire in Babylon", Its about about how the West Indian cricket team in the 70's and 80's went on to dominate the World in the sport, which is a colonial sport. One of the best documentaries.

Yes, more than two thirds of the fighters were born in Africa, and some were captured soldiers. In fact, Dessalines was trained by a woman who served in the famous Dahomey all-woman Royal guard. Toussaint's father was born in Dahomey as a prince. Toussaint spoke Fon language, and his battalion was made up mostly of slaves from Dahomey.

@ 51:55 One needs to Highlight Jean Francois Makandal better known Simply as Makandal.... His revolt made the newspapers of Paris and in turn influenced the "french" revolution. His era was know as the Reign of Terror in the North (of SD) by Makandal. Supposedly he organized the Maroons into a singular unit as he criss crossed the entire island and communicated with them all. Also he organized the first Bwa Kayiman (Bois Cayiman) Conference (Ceremony) and Boucquement Did the Second Conference ie Ceremony.
Thus the french rev was influence by Makandal's revolution aspirations. Makandal was the first to announce that Haiti will become an independent Nation.
