Just found your channel - fellow Kiwi's here living out of the ordinary but in the Pelorus Sounds. We're a family of 6 with too many pets. Loved your video - beaching to do work is such a benefit! We have to haul out every 12-18 months which is a total pain if you have projects to do that require drying out. Will check out more of your more recent videos. Safe travels!
I had an old 48ft Crowther and I changed to Seahawk's Autostream props. They were in Victoria but now in NSW. I also changed the starboard output to left hand as I was getting cavitation. The Autostream worked extremely well and one benefit I was most impressed with was that you had the same power in forward and reverse. Very helpful if you need to stop quickly. Also they were easy to install and maintain.
Hi Geoff, cheers for your comment. If you have time I would love to ask you a few questions. What props did you have before the auto stream? Whas there a noticeable difference once changed. Motoring sailing and punching weather. -sam
I had fixed props that were driven by 60hp via shaft drives. I did go a little bigger with the Autostream and I did get better forward motion without cavitation but can remember how much. The power in reverse was outstanding and so much more than with fixed props. I had the Autostreams for 10 years (sold the boat) without a single issue.
Wow that is the best reference ever! I have purchased flexofold props already, they were a bit cheaper, but if they don't work out I'll look at outs stream again. Cheers for the advice! -sam
I have had those for 12 years. There is a complete lack of maintenance, they should be greased as recommended. Put hard anti fouling on them and keep them clean
Hey John you may be right as the last owners didn't go to far for a few years and were living in a marina. I still feel that the surface area of the blades is a bit small for a heavy cat so I'm going to try other ones and do a comparison analysis. I will also completely strip down the kiwi props and give them a good birthday. -sam
Hello! That would be amazing if you did, she started build I believe Feb of 2004, Built in the Gold Coastby MEC. We have pictures of her skeleton from the first owners, we are the second owners of her 🤗
Loving the videos! Any updates on how you‘re gonna tackle boat weightloss? As a non-boat owner that watches way to much sailing-tube i was wondering if fuel weight thats below the waterline counts towards the boat weight? Greetings from the Netherlands
Greetings! Fuel weight does count. Specific gravity of salt water is 1.025 and the average diesel Specific gravity is 0.86 so if we go in volume then we still gain some buoyancy when our tanks are pressed. -sam
New subscriber for you folks, I like your style, choice of finish her up aluminum Cat, and NO SAIL DRIVES !!!! sail drives should be illegal , lol Best of luck on the prop re-do. Here making my own copper based antifoul... Oh, Max props. OR a Brunton autoprop. Max prop for the money and they do STOP your boat Fast in reverse. Variprop has a really beefy and quiet feathering prop, not sure where the price lies though.
Thank you!! Love hearing people are enjoying the videos. Yes, we are not the biggest fans of sail drives. Shaft drives were on the "strongly want" list when we were looking at boats. This girl's design was for sail drives and the first owners did not want them so when they had her built they had the engines moved to under the aft beds, a skeg designed and shaft drives. The original area for the engines are now amazing storage lockers and tool workshop. The previous owners were awesome and gave us a bunch of photos are her build from skeleton to launch 🤗 💜
New to your show so forgive me not knowing how you really use your boat. You say she's heavy. I'm not sure drag on a standard prop would bother you much. Especially if you can find the perfect two blade fixed prop that should tuck in behind the keels.
Thank you!! Love hearing people are enjoying the videos! We greatly appreciate it! Because of the skeg we will have to go 3 blade props, 2 blades will exit and enter the skeg at the same time causing vibration 🤗 We are supposed to be 15 tonne and we are 17. We are doing our best to get the weight off and we are seeing a difference in performance 🙌 but we are not finished yet getting the weight off, hoping to do our best with making her lighter 🤗 but looking at props that have some good push for heavier boats ❤️
Hi guys, your video brought a smile to my face....especially Charlie. I have been sailing my catamaran around the UK south coast for 20 years. I have been beaching at least twice a year to scrub off and change anodes for all these years. Its getting hard work now I^m in my late 60s but I get help now. My cat is a 12 m Dazcat called Cloud 9. A quick google will give you an idea of what she^s like. I have similar but bigger and deeper fixed keels hence we take to the ground very well without tipping forward too much. I have 30 hp volvo 2030 engines with saildrives. 20 years old now but still going strong. I have volvo 3 blade folding props which have been excellent. Full power in forward and reverse. I have changed the hubs on the props a couple of years ago as i had a bit of corrosion on the splines but i think that was my own fault as i was a bit mean with the grease. Originally i wanted to use Gori folders but after 4 props that vibrated i gave up and went for volvos. Dont go for Gori props....real vibration problems. I also noticed that you scraped your hull clean with scrapers. I scrape but also use a heavy duty scotch brite pad to remove the top surface of the antifoul which removes the depleted biocide layer so you have a fresh biocide rich layer. I use a commercial Jotun Seaforce 90 antifoul which is good for 5 years ....its meant for shipping in continual use up to 20 knots. I have scrubbed the antifoul through to the primer in places but i just use a can of quick drying Jotun Aquiline to touch up...seems to work. Cheers Chris
Hey Chris, Cheers for the advice! I am sort of glad to here the feed back about gori props as we have also found them to be the most expensive 😀. I have herd good things about the Volvo props and I love the shape of them. 5 yrs out of antifowl is amazing! We have just purchased the international antifowl but will definitely look into the jotun option for the slipping after next. -sam
Sam, I forgot one more interesting antifouling snippet. For the last couple of years I have been using a product called Lanoguard which is basically sheep Lanolin with a bit of antifoul mixed in. It's a heavy grease that smells like sheep s##t! I use it as antifoul on my props. I have never ever been able to get any antifoul to stick on props...tried all sorts. I simply get a great gob of Lanoguard and spread it liberally all over the props. It seems to work quite well but the big advantage is you can get a big gob of this stuff and wipe it on the props even when they are submerged. The other bonus seems to be that it provides a very effective anti corrosion layer. My prop anodes this year were virtually completely intact...they usually disintegrate to white dust.
Wow I have just purchased prop one for the new props but I will definitely add lanoguard to the list it would be great to be able to apply under water. How long do you get out of each application? I absolutely love non standard options. -sam
Sam , I began using Lanogoard on my props a few years ago. Originally I applied it all over the existing antifoul on both the props and the saildrives. For several years I topped it up quite frequently as I was on a swinging mooring in Chichester Harbour that dries out every tide hence no problems with access. The lanoguard goes a very long way so one tub is good for a while. A couple of years ago I moved my boat to a pontoon mooring that doesn't dry out on a river estuary on the Isle of wight hence I can't get to the bottom of my boat unless I find somewhere to beach it. I went back to Chichester harbour a couple of months ago which was the first time for a whole year. The props had quite a bit of fouling after a whole year but I could still make 6 knots flat out under engine vs 9+ knots flat out when hull and props are absolutely clean. Not bad after 1 year. I have also tried Duralac as a prop antifoul...chromate paste...worked OK but it fell off the blades. The main problem with most prop antifouls is they need time to cure which is difficult between tides. I try to limit lifting my boat out to once every 5 years and prop antifoul doesn't last that long. I now use Lanoguard products on loads of things...they do a spray which is great for outboards. ...it stops corrosion. I also use Duralac around metal to metal contacts to passify the contact area such as rivets in a mast. Trouble with boats everything above the water wants to corrode and anything below the water wants to foul and corrode!
Hahaha I hear you on that one. Aluminium is such a soft metal. Thank you for the wonderful information. I believe that I will use lanoguard on the moving parts of the prop and prop one on the blades and see how that goes. -sam
Yes, Gori props look marvellous, but unfortunately, they are a little out of our budget. We went for flexofold as we felt that they were slightly better value for money. -sam
We have a friend that fitted acrow props to his monohul to black it and keep it upright. Depending on you underwater arrangements it could be an option for you. Good luck next year. -sam
Gori props. Folding, Over Drive, Better Speed in flat water and save fuel. Only negative is they are not that strong in reverse but once you know that, not a prob. Peter A - Smokyjim
They have the same rating in foward and reverse but due to keeping everything as simple as possible we have decided to go with 2 right handed props. -sam
Hi just watched your video and see you have vivid petit antifoul. We also have an aluminium cat and are about to use the same antifoul, our question is how long have you have this antifoul on for , we were hoping for around 12/ 18 months
It has I high amount of biocides in it which we found works well for about 14 months but then the antifowl is not very soft and we had trouble reaching the speeds required for the antifowl to start to self polish. That is why we are trying internationals version (which is softer) we will let you know which one we find is best. -sam
Hey Mark, Mumbys are great boats, none were for sale when we were looking at boats. We did toss around the idea of building a Mumby 48. Our boat is a Lock Crowther Catamaran, Design 85 Mark IV Absolutely in love with her! -Cait
Hi I think a larger diameter 2 bladed folding propeller will be more efficient and you will use less fuel. Vibrations from your jamming 3 blade one may have all ready damaged the shaft ,bearings, jointa or whatever.
Thank you!💖 We had to go with three blade because of the skeg, with the two blade both would enter and exit the skegs at the same time causing vibration. We are doing the refit now to the boat, props and shafts are out, we will be relaunched with the new props and see how they are, really excited to have the new props on! 💗💗💗 -Cait
@@sailingwiththejamess There are so many possible causes of vibration in a drive system! It sounds like you've already eliminated many with the alignment of the engine and shaft. The two remaining ones that come to mind are the possibility of a some play in the cutless bearing or a combination of hull shape and prop diameter. I understand that if there is insufficient clearance between the prop blade tips (probably around an inch) and any part of the hull, the tip vortices can set up vibrations, obviously more so at speed or when accelerating hard.
@@sailingwiththejamess Given that you have eliminated any alternative, the most likely cause is an unbalanced propeller, two bladed are also more prone to generate turbulence and hence vibration. A propeller is like a car wheel, if unbalanced it will vibrate differently at different rotational speeds, and the vibration may disappear at some. If not folding, double check the vibration at different speeds also with a freewheeling propeller (engine stopped). If still present, then the diagnosis is confirmed.
The most important thing is that you do not overload your engine. There is a recommended RPM it should be run at I think at 3/4 throttle. If your rpm is below that at full throttle then you are overloading the engines so then you have to reduce the size or pitch of your propellors. If you are above the recommended RPM then you can go for larger diameter or more pitch. Anyway best wishes and good luck. Hope you can find a place to let you try out different propellors till you get the right diameter and the right pitch.
We don't get vibration, if we put 2 bladed props on they would cause vibration which is why we have gone with 3 bladed flexofold folding props. We're moving from feathering props to folding props. Very impressed with Flexofold Folding props, looking forward to doing some comparisons between the old and new props -Cait
We used to beach our trymaran at Seabrook Island at our gramps and scrubbed the underside. And do small maintenance and away we went. Not sure why yours are so overgrown this bad after 6 weeks. That's allot we used Spartan Multi-Season Antifouling Paint & Sharkskin Hard BP. On the trymaran.
Here is a Tip use in your Antifouling the hottest Chili Powder you can find, ad that to the paint about 1 Part in 6 or 7 Parts of Paint, the Result will surprise you.

Thank you! We have the antifoul paint onboard for when we are hailed out next, the great thing about bottom paint is that if you don't like what you have on, you can change it every 2 years 😉
Love learning new things, thank you

Oh right cheers that makes a bit more sense. Me and Google couldn't find ringo liner anywhere.

Thank you so much! The beaching ability is great, and super fun! We are in the midst of a major refit and all is about to change!

-sam
I think my company built that cat a lot of years ago same name same un painted hull can ya tell me who built it ..
-sam
New subscriber for you folks, I like your style, choice of finish her up aluminum Cat, and NO SAIL DRIVES !!!! sail drives should be illegal , lol
Best of luck on the prop re-do.
The previous owners were awesome and gave us a bunch of photos are her build from skeleton to launch 🤗
💜
New to your show so forgive me not knowing how you really use your boat. You say she's heavy. I'm not sure drag on a standard prop would bother you much. Especially if you can find the perfect two blade fixed prop that should tuck in behind the keels.
Thank you!! Love hearing people are enjoying the videos! We greatly appreciate it!
Because of the skeg we will have to go 3 blade props, 2 blades will exit and enter the skeg at the same time causing vibration 🤗
We are supposed to be 15 tonne and we are 17.

Cheers
Chris
Hey Chris,
Cheers for the advice!
-sam
Sam ,
I began using Lanogoard on my props a few years ago.
-sam
My cat is a lot smaller than yours. I am running Gori props on it now for thirty years and am more than happy with them.
Yes, Gori props look marvellous, but unfortunately, they are a little out of our budget. We went for flexofold as we felt that they were slightly better value for money.
-sam
Oh wow your cat looks cool like that, I don't know how our 47ft boat will go beached as it's not a catamaran...but we will see next year 😊
We have a friend that fitted acrow props to his monohul to black it and keep it upright. Depending on you underwater arrangements it could be an option for you. Good luck next year.

Do your gearboxes have the same clutches and rating forward and astern?
They have the same rating in foward and reverse but due to keeping everything as simple as possible we have decided to go with 2 right handed props.

Thankyou
Any time my friend
Is it a brumby 48?
Hey Mark,
Mumbys are great boats, none were for sale when we were looking at boats. We did toss around the idea of building a Mumby 48.
Our boat is a Lock Crowther Catamaran, Design 85 Mark IV
Absolutely in love with her!

Thank you! The paint scrapers from Bunnings worked like a dream at getting the stripes off 😍

Hi I think a larger diameter 2 bladed folding propeller will be more efficient and you will use less fuel. Vibrations from your jamming 3 blade one may have all ready damaged the shaft ,bearings, jointa or whatever.
Thank you!💖
We had to go with three blade because of the skeg, with the two blade both would enter and exit the skegs at the same time causing vibration. We are doing the refit now to the boat, props and shafts are out, we will be relaunched with the new props and see how they are, really excited to have the new props on!

Very impressed with Flexofold Folding props, looking forward to doing some comparisons between the old and new props

im an internet sailor. dont got silicon, go copper coat(if you wanna cruise long term, and apply it yourself and correctly, (at least 3 times in short period)) and dont have to haul out every year anyway, which you shouldnt, since you got shaft drives. --> according to other youtuber sailors
