Sailing with the James’s
Австралия
Добавлен 1 сен 2022
We bought an unfinished, aluminum catamaran and are fixing her up as we sail the world.
Welcome aboard! We are Sam, Cait, and Charlie - the James Family!
Sam has always been a FIFO worker (Fly in, Fly Out) which came with its own challenges and when our daughter Charlie came along we thought that the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze anymore, it was time for a change.
It became more important to us than ever to take time out for family and we felt what better way to do this than by travelling the world and sharing unique experiences with each other. But most importantly, want to spend time together as a family during these formative years and create lasting memories with our beautiful daughter Charlie.
In 2022, we put our house on the market and traded suburban life in Airlie Beach, Australia for an adventure of a lifetime.
Join us and come along for the adventure!

Looking good, thanks guys!
Thank you Trev, you are an absolute legend - thank you! Great appreciate it!
Cheers trev. Thank you. -sam
New subscriber here - love the boat and the refit work. Do you have an idea of how much she weighs fully loaded?
Hey Sam, thanks for subscribing. How much she weighs is a much debated topic and the truth is we don't know for sure but we think she is about 16t. Design weight is 15t and we are definitely heavier than that as we are down on our lines. We are hoping the next haul out will be with someone with working scales to put this debate to bed. -sam
The windows look great
Cheers Imogen, we love the windows. They let sooo much air in. -sam

Well hello again. I think the front windows look absolutely amazing another great video guys as always stay safe and God bless till next time
Cheers Kris, we looked the windows -sam
Onboard Lifestyles replaced all of there through hulls and when they did that, they relocated all of them but one above the waterline. The only one that is below the waterline is for their water maker. I'm probably going to do the same thing when I build my Cyber 48. A water tank up forward doesn't seem like that would be a good idea due to weight distribution.
Above the waterline is better for the anifowl but worse for the nose. I would prefer to keep the smell to a minimum. It's not a water tank up foward but a sullage tank that would only be used at anchor and disposed of when under way so it shouldn't affect weight placement that much. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess I was thinking about the smell for the black water. That makes perfect sense. Something to consider for sure on the black water and water maker but everything else seems to be OK to place above the waterline. That's interesting about a sullage tank. I've never heard of one before or have thought about that before. Definitely something to consider when your at anchor for some time. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this statement, "Above the waterline is better for the anifowl but worse for the nose"?
Oh I just mean that when you put your black water overboard discharge above the water line then it smells when you discharge but if it's below the waterline then it seems to interfere with your antifowl. -sam
Where is it being fabricated
Hey Robert! We did our refit in Cairns Australia. But the boat was built in 2004-2005 in the Gold Coast at MEC -Cait
Charlies growing faster than those Tomatoes.. 🍅 her baby face is changing. You know where those seeds came from 😂... Clue you put in a new outflow hole. 😉 Rats and mice normally harvest them before they can germinate so thats a healthy sign in a different way 😉
Hahaha! they probably came from the galley sink or from the boat before us galley sink LOL the toilets dont work on the hardstand We got a few ripe tomatoes from the plants! Great snack! Charlie is growing so fast hey!! We have a height chart onboard and took her height they day we got hauled out and they day we went back in and there is a few inches difference in height! kids grow so fast! -Cait
Never use silicone on a boat
Hey David, why would we never use silicon? And what would you recommend instead? -sam
@ Does not hold up to saltwater, better to spend a little more . Personally you would have been better off using sicoflex on the windows . Marine Sealant vs Silicone: Choose marine sealant for heavy-duty, long-lasting performance in the harsh marine environment, and consider silicone for less demanding situations or where cost is a major factor Marine Sealant: Designed specifically for marine environments: Can withstand harsh conditions like saltwater, UV rays, extreme temperatures, and fuel spills. Superior flexibility and adhesion: Maintains elasticity to move with boat movement and adheres well to various boat materials like fiberglass, wood, and metal. Fungus and mildew resistant: Prevents these common marine problems that can degrade surfaces and compromise the seal. Higher initial cost: Compared to regular silicone, marine sealant tends to be pricier. Variety of types: Different formulas are available for specific applications like bedding deck hardware, sealing hatches, or filling in cracks. Silicone: More affordable: Generally cheaper than marine sealant. Wide range of uses: Can be used for various household and construction applications, not just marine. Easier to find: Available at most hardware stores, whereas marine sealant might require specialized locations. Less resistant to harsh conditions: May degrade faster in saltwater, UV exposure, and extreme temperatures. Lower adhesion: Might not adhere as well to certain boat materials as marine sealant. Not as flexible: May crack or tear with boat movement, compromising the seal. Less fungus and mildew resistance: More susceptible to growth in marine environments. Marine-specific bonds are more durable than their non-marine counterparts and adhere to surfaces better, but they also come with a much heftier price tag. Silicones offer a more affordable alternative, but they’re not as tough as marine sealants.
@@davidcummings6299 Hey David, appreciate your comment and thought. We used Sikaflex on the windows and FixTech for the through Hull fitting. Sorry for any confusion, I called it 'Sika' and silicone in the video -Cait
@ Good I was a little concerned for underwater fittings .. happy sailing. “ coming soon “

Good to get out for a fun ride in the 'groves. You have to watch out for those leaping crocs lol. Nice to get those windows in, getting the air flow going! Love those 'wild' tomatoes you adopted. I see that Charlie is keeping an eye on everything. Gearing up for the big launch!
Thank you Frank! Lol 😆 glad you like the bloopers! We got a few ripe tomatoes from the wild plants! The hatches have made a HUGE difference inside the Saloon, we get a nice breeze through and the whole boat is cooler. As always, we love reading your comments. Thank you Frank! -Cait
widows look a treat , be a lot cooler
Thank you! It's so much cooler inside now, lots of airflow through the cabin 🙌 and the brows are doing great with keeping the sun off the windows. Win win all around! -Cait
Love the foward facing hatches, but i could leave the swtj52 looks like the rego numbers.
Hahaha I guess they do look a bit like rego numbers but we have put so much of ourselves into the boat that we wanted to personalise her. -sam
would you be able to anti-foul the dinghy ?
Hey Geoffery, Definitely could! Yes we could antifoul the dingy, it would need to be prepped before putting antifoul on but definitely could. We normally haul the tender up in the davits and don't have it sitting in the water all the time. But at the shipyard we've just been keep the tender on the tender dock to run errands. -Cait
@@sailingwiththejamess oh ! I see now why it had so much on it , I understand more now cheers ... keep up the good work , what are their plans for the ally cat next to you , are they fixing it up ?
They still plan on doing it up but he is having trouble retiring at the moment and has been busy with extra work. We will stop in on our way north up to Indonesia and see how he is progressing. -sam

Indeed it seems you are enjoying getting yet another refit project checked of the list. Can't believe you have been on the hard for 6 months. It does seem like time flies. What more did you find out about the sister boat in the yard of the one you had hoped to purchase ?
Hey Sallie, Thank you, we are really looking forward to getting the sails up and seeing what she can do after all the hard work and modifications. The alloy cat next to us is owned and has a big 18 month refit planned to start next year, she is the owners retirement project -Cait

Ah, you did do a bit of exploring. Shame about the wrecks.
@SVPearler thats the one right up from the boatyard! The wreck is a really good indicator at how deep the creek is - super fun cruise ride through the mangroves! Are you guys back in town?
@sailingwiththejamess ahhh, thought there was another one up by Packers Camp. Yeah back. Lisa away for a few weeks next week.

New to your channel but just watched this video. Good day from Alaska! Juneau, Alaska, where the weather is as cold as my ex-wife's heart! Kidding, really! Hey, regarding your drone; on some drones you can set the 'return to home' to follow the RC/remote control. I fly a Mavic mini here from my sailboat and have done the same thing you guys did with it wanting to return to where the boat USED to be! Not sure how to set this up because I've not done it yeet but do remember reading that it can be set to follow and return to the location of the RC. Anyway mates, good luck with your channel. Love the aluminum catamaran. We have glaciers here and the aluminum boats can get really close to the while my GRP boat can't!
Hi wade! Alaska wow! It's on our list of places to visit! We have a DJi Mini 2 and I will look up if we can change the return to the home option thankyou for the great advice! -sam
Just a thought from a new admirer of your videos and thinking...If the extensions do slap too much at anchor in a bit chop, you could always make your stern bulkhead water tight and fill the transom cavities with closed cell foam as an option. Should they be ruptured or torn off somehow, they wont fill with water also. You could test one side first and record the sound difference? You wont be able to inspect for damage / leakage from the inside, but you can still inspect from the outside should you ever suspect damage?
It I'd a good plan, and I definitely think it would make things quieter. At this stage, they aren't slapping, but we keep on talking about getting lighter, so it may at some point. I have reinforced the sterns on tugs and it made reverse alot quieter. It's a good thought and suggestion my friend thank you. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess 👍
Thank you! 💙 -Cait
I think this resort was damaged due to cyclone a few years ago...I don't think the owners ever wanted to repair it.
Oh that's a shame! We are hoping to stop in there on the way south to sample the coffees and use the showers 🚿. It is in a great location. -sam
you could have dug a hole so you could install the rudders on the chalks, so you could modify them.
Hey George! It's a good thought. We got lifted onto the trailer a couple days before launch to be able to put the rudders in and do a few other things, the yard was really nice to do that for us and it allowed us also to antifoul without the blocks on the hulls -Cait
wow. I think that Emma James is going to be a sleeper. she needs to have little winglets on the bottom of her rudders like a 747.
Hey Space Monkey! Thank you! Definitely a little sleeper hopefully, we are looking forward to getting the sails up and seeing what she can do! -Cait
Why not fit jet propulsion.
My wife wouldn't let me. -sam
Hmm, kind of easy choices. Paint the new area white and maybe white cushions, with colored covers, whose color can change as your sentiments evolve. Base colors and bright throw pillows for accent. For the aft rain fly/shade extension. Would two tracks work easier and provide proper load paths for the sun tortured materials?
Hey Kevin, We would love white cushions, but I believe our 3 yr old might have other plans for them, lol. The 2 tracks are a good idea, but it was about how we cut the fabric in order for it to fit. We have gone with cutting it to fit better as sun shades and we are very happy with it! -sam
Beautiful, beautiful work, magical watching the transition. I was wondering about the inset anode boxes. Was the approach to sand the back wall for electrical conductivity to the anode, or maybe through the bolts, or a pad, or strap?
Hi Kevin, The conductivity happens Through the bolts. We have a 20mm plate on the back to ensure a good connection and the anodes have a 10mm clearance around the outside of them to increase the surface area. We also have anodes on our props down aft. -sam
My first cat had quite fine bows and flat sterns. I had thought fully lifting the daggerboards when running would be the correct thing, as with a dinghy. But in fact the bows dug in so giving a tendency to broach round. It was actually better to keep the boards half down. With removing the skegs, and extending the sterns in your case you may find similar. I have seen boats with smaller daggerboards close to the stern to give safe running.
Cheers Mark! We are looking forward to putting the sails up and seeing what she can do and getting to know her again. She's very responsive now. Cheers Legend -Cait
@ a cat shouldn’t be a dog to sail!
Looking forward to seeing what she can do! YEEWWWW! Can say we are very impressed with her so far! -Cait
Like the hessian bag idea. Only issue is that if you unintentionally beach on shingle….as I did when bringing my cat home, it went dark just before I entered home port, all electric gone, including iPad Navigation, was unaware of how far the spit extended. As I understand the line between the lowest part of the hull and the rudder is above the props? And you have very substantial rudders, so you should be ok, though a square of board to place under the rudder would help prevent them sinking into the sand.
Hey Mark! Thank you! We like that Hessian bags won't weigh much, if anything at all, and we can have the option to beach in an emergency. We will miss the protection the skegs gave -Cait
@ I don’t have hessian bags (or polytarp bags, which they now use). But what I do carry is a ‘one ton’ builders bag, we get sand etc delivered in them, non return. I keep it for a make shift sea anchor…might even try it one day
Will do some research on them, thanks! -Cait
Your lengthy add on is the tick to go faster / smoother. That’s a lot of fun plus those tail ends make her look good. Parasite drag is an aviation therm and referred to al items stinking out. Nice to see how you make her slender. Impressive job well done 👍🏻
Cheers, I think aerodynamics and hydrodynamics have alot of similarities hey. -sam
Cheers guys..😊
Cheers Legend! We absolutely love the support!! -Cait
A friend of mine raced jet boats they used special paint ,it was called slip coat ,nano teck water repellent.
Wow sounds impressive! I haven't herd of it. -sam
Hi guys, can't wait to see the results on the water. Have to say I kept saying "don't put your greasy hands on the primer" through the video! Have done a complete bottom job myself more than once and getting paint to stick is a challenge! Have you contemplated putting tips on the end of your rudders. Mine are basically "spitfire wings". Yours look very small for the size of boat.
Hahaha, yes, getting it to stick can be hard. We used gloves to keep things clean. The bit you see without gloves is when we were sanding the epoxy faring. My plan was to put tips but I just ran out of time. It will have to be done next slipping. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamessWould that extra ‘wingtip’ not conflict when drying out and would bottom endplates not be a better way to alleviate the issue of induced drag? Having said that I wonder if the drag reduction would be noticeable at your cruising speed! Anyway, perhaps all this will be resolved at your next haulout when the rudder tops are modified to effectively use the hull as an endplate … hmmm, perhaps I should have just had another beer instead of typing all this rubbish!
Hahaha I love theorising and app the comment. Our plan is not to dry out on the rudders so the only reason we would put a plate on the bottom of the rudders is if we hobby horse a bit and feel that we need to settle that down. The tips on the rudders may help with flow but I was mainly doing it for fun. My plan is to put the gopro down when under motor and then again when under sail and just watch the flow over the rudders for a bit before next haul out to decide what approach we are going to have. With the next lot of modifications. -sam
@ It is easy enough to tuft an aerodynamic surface to disclose airflow/turbulence etc but I wonder if the equivalent can somehow be achieved for underwater surfaces (probably catch some fascinating fish activity on your GoPro as they interact with tufts!) Must have a look on t’internet …
It's my understanding that most theories are transferable. Most the time with the gopro we are looking for air bubbles though so I suppose air is not the best sign. If you find out some cool stuff on the internet let us know. I can start planting the seed with Cait now ready for the next haul out lol. -sam
worth watching
Thank you King Free for the kind comment!
I love the recessed anode idea.So whole under water part of the boat is epoxy faired or just where anodes sit, some believes that water could penetrate between alu and paint and cause corrosion?
I would love to fare the whole hull at some point but unfortunately we didn't have the time or money to do it this time round. We only fared our trailing edges and the transition between the old hull and the extensions. When it comes to metal hulls corrosion is just one of the draw backs that we have to deal with. We hope that our prep work has reduced the chances of corrosion but there is no guarantee's. If we had painted straight over the aluminium then there would have been a high chance of corrosion but we sanded off the oxidation off and acid washed then put the primer on within 2 hrs of the acid wash so I believe we did all we can to minimise our chances of corrosion. -sam
Really strange to have skegs and dagger boards at the same time. I think you made the correct choice to remove the skegs removing weight and drag. By the look of the last shot in your video the water release at the stern is brilliant with low drag and nice water flow. I bet you very glad to have the cat back in the water and exploring again. Oh 1 thing about your kitty is if you plan to go to Fiji you might have to pay for the quarantine every day .. Sailing Zatara had to pay $20/day when they had their kitty on board. Thanks for the video.
Hey Stephen! Yes she was designed and has daggerboards and the skegs were an after design add on at build time for the ability to beach the boat. She's been handling amazingly since snipping them off 🙌 Fiji is on the list 🌴 -Cait
Hey Guys Great episode with good information. 👏🏽 There is certainly a few things in this that we could do on our boat as well 👍🏽👍🏽 Thanks again and keep up the good work 👏🏽👏🏽
Hey guys! Thank you so much for the kind comment! She is handling really really well. If you have any questions or want to know more we are more than happy to share what we've done and learned. ❤️ -Cait
Step 1: How to start and extend your back of the boat, you start with buying a: mason's line. Then you tie it to the rudder end up against your boat so you don't have a cap between your ruder en boat with the cord, step 2: you make a 3 legged stand, now you let it stand after the boat further than you gone extend, now you can tie the mason's line cord to your 3 legged stand en and make sure you can adjust it up and down, because you have to align it to the upper end of the boat corner, now you have a perfect working line to make your extents' en it gone be even with your boat, now you can start with making a template. For the extension
Hi again iceman, This looks familiar lol. Cheers for the comment l. I'm a firm believer in " if it doesn't look right then it probably isn't right. The bow and sterns always start from the centre of the boat and you need to look at the lines all the way to the centre. -sam

Hi Iceman, We have the complete build plans of the boat. I initially designed the extensions off that starting at the centre of the boat and followed the shape from there. We found that as the alloy has a mind of its own the shell plating was not 100% to the plan so we had to modify the plan. We did it similar to the way you suggested but used our eyes instead of the masons line. It is a good suggestion though, we appreciate your thoughts. -sam
Hey, arn't they the new props u put on not long ago? I'm confused🤣 Agricultural wow Sam, I'm impressed. Just letting u know audio very low, can't hear much, oh awesome she's in the water, I'm smiling hard🤣😁😂🇦🇺💯
Hi seawench! We had kiwi props and they were on the boat when we brought her. We have had the flexofolds for a while now but we were waiting to be hauled out to install them. Now they are on and we absolutely love them! Soooo much more push! -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess I really like the Kiwi prop on my 40ft tri. So powerful in reverse! They do need cleaning and greasing with some pressure to keep the blades mobile. Mine seems pretty low drag when feathered.
They are good props for the right application. We're 17 tonnes, and I don't think they are suited for heavier boats. Ours kept jamming and sticking in reverse. We had 3 props as a we were always rebuilding 1 of them. You are right they were fantastic in reverse but unfortunately they were not for us. The flexofolds are sooo much better for our boat. -sam
Love watching your conversions all the best😊👍🇦🇺
Cheers! We loved doing the conversions! The only part that wasn't the most fun was paying for them lol. We have a few more mods to come! The boat is really shaping up to be an awesome platform to see the world on! -sam
We've enjoyed watching all your progress. Way to guys!
Thank you legends!
Thank you legends!!
So guyz spill the beans! How fast is she going?
Hay Jo! I haven't done a proper speed test yet with no tide or wind so I can't give you facts right now but she is going alot faster! We will do a comparison vid soon. -sam
@@sailingwiththejamess look forward to it
Haha cheers mum. Looks like there is no wind at the end of the month so I'll do one then. -sam
Wow wow wow guys, very impressed!
Thank you so much! Wait till you see our speeds 😉 -Cait
Cheers! We love the results and I personally love playing with the boat and trying new things, well new to Emma. -sam
Very well thought out and planned I can't add anything to the parasitic drag truthfully I don't understand it but I know that you do and I have all the faith in the world that everything is going to work out just the way you wanted it to if not better. As always stay safe and God bless
Thank you Kris, It is something that I wanted to do for a while and it is just another step into making the boat uniquely ours. I will probably never completely stop playing with her as technology and thought processes around boats is evolving so fast. Have a great weekend 😀. -sam
Well, you finally getting close to your splash down day - how exciting for all of you to finally see the results of your hard and diligent work. This calls for a celebration to the New Emma Jane ( hmm am I corrrct on the name?). Well here's to Her !
Hi Sallie, spoiler alert ⚠️ were in the water giving the boat a good clean and preparing to head south for the summer. We are super excited to see what she can do! You were close with the boats name, she is "Emma James" as we believe she is part of the family. -sam
