  • It was a windy day for an adventure. On our way to explore the Gold Lake mine area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula gold field, we stopped to examine a large basaltic outcropping. Ken pointed out some of the geological features while our prospecting buddies followed doggedly up & down the rocks. Before heading up the road to Gold Lake Park (where families of the 1926 Barnes-Hecker mine disaster held a memorial), we watched a Mineral Range train cross the trestle over the road. Tales of historic gold mines and 60-foot wide quartz veins, Lake Superior copper & iron. And the adventure is just beginning!
