  • Michigan is truly a special place to Rockhound. The beauty of the Great Lakes is unmatched. In this video my buddy Rob and I went on the hunt for agate on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It turned out to be a bigger adventure than we ever imagined!

Fun fact of that banded iron you're finding. The red color is the result of the first oxygen introduced to the atmosphere in the history of planet Earth and oxidizing the iron in the rock. That rock you pulled out of the water is the first time algae on earth released oxygen in the atmosphere. That's over 2 billion years old! Before that the Earth had NO oxygen in the atmosphere and life has just begun. How amazing is that?!

I never gave rocks a second thought until I moved to the UP. The first time I went to Lake Superior I was enthralled by the amazing rocks. I’ve since found a copper replacement agate, an amethyst agate, 3 lakers, rose quartz, float copper, copper silver ore, a rare platinum ore from Canada, etc…

I'm 2.30 minutes in and the view just reminded me of the one time i went to Michigan at 4 or 5 years old. I got in trouble because I threw a fit saying it was the ocean and got mad that everyone kept telling me it was a lake LOL. Hissy fit toddler rage and I remember it! I want to go back someday!

Lake Superior, as well as all the other Great Lakes, are actually such large bodies of water that they do qualify as inland seas. And even though they are comprised of fresh water, their salinity is higher than that of other fresh water lakes. So I think your 4 or 5 year old self was actually quite justified in your hissy fit…lol.

Moonstone... petrified wood. There's a red orange yellow chalcedony crystal called sunset stone. Wish I could send pictures. Found red druzy geode also. So fun to see what the sea washes up. But I can't find any shark teeth. I'm still looking. Takes is easy gents. Keep up the good work 🤙

My Dad took us there on a day trip when we were camping in the U P many years ago.
