The handmade rifle is likely a reference to the "true shovel AK", which was a homemade AK using the handle of a shovel as a stock in addition to the blade of the shovel as the dust cover. It was apparently very well-made, hence the fact that it looks nearly professional quality in-game.

IIRC, even the receiver was made from a shovel, albeit "just" the metal of it pressed and bent into an AK receiver.

The shovel handle stock on the handmade rifle is a reference to a picture of an AK found overseas where someone did that in real life to replace a missing stock. Later someone completely built an AK using the blade of the shovel to make the receiver. Look up "shitshovel AK" to see that. It's really funny. The name for the handmade rifle in Fallout 4 might be a reference to that.
Later, Karl Kasarda from the InRange TV YT channel and Henry of 9 Hole Reviews would come up with the Wasteland Shuffle which is very much inspired by Fallout and Karl would shoot the drill using an AK that he put a shovel handle on.

In the Museum of Technology in fallout 3 there’s a display that makes reference to an assault rifle called the M199, this could be the assault rifle in fallout 4 because it’s described as “Perhaps the most well-recognized weapon in the modern U.S. Military arsenal, the M199 earned its nickname 'The Backtalker' from the unusual report the firing mechanism makes as it ejects a spent shell. Firing standard 5.56mm rounds, the M199 is still the official infantry weapon of the U.S. Army.” also several creation club paints write “M199” on the drum mag of the assault rifle.

The FO4 "assault rifle" does start to make sense if it was meant for power armored soldiers (given the largerness of PA). To a normal person, it would def be far too big and bulky to be anything under a LMG/HMG, but power armor would easily allow it to be held like a 'rifle'. it reminds me of other weapons in other series, such as the Boltgun from 40k, which may be standard issue rifle to 3 meter tall space marines, but would be otherwise unwieldy to anything not in power armor.

As for the Radium Rifle, I imagine that it's a weapon designed for use by submachine crews, on account of being more compact than the Combat Rifle. It would explain how it is more or less exclusively found around the submarine base at Far Harbour.
That said, its presence in Appalachia could suggest that it was also used by nuclear silo crews.

It was intended to be used by the “Volkssturm” hence the name “Volkssturmgewehr”. I see why you imagined it as a compact and effective rifle for crews in limited spaces but the I think the many Smg of the Germans would fit the need of such crews. Needless to say, the VG 1-5 was too little, too late and, imho used the wrong caliber. The 8 mm kurz was pretty rare at the time of the VG 1-5 and Smg calibers would be a better fit since the intended use behind the weapon would be mainly city’s and 9mm was much more common

Since they're so similar, it'd make production cheaper and the combat rifle mainly being chambered for pistol calibers makes it more of a carbine than a rifle, but the manufacturer could of called it this for marketing. And the government may of preferred civilians having access to less powerful rifles considering how much civil unrest there was. Alot harder to take down soldiers in power armor and sentry bots with pistol rounds and shotgun shells if civilians decided to revolt.

One minor thing regarding the Handmade Rifles resemblence to the Dragunov, I would argue instead that it is closer to the Romanian PSL. The Dragunov, while having similar controls and aesthetics, is mechanically different from the Russian AK platform, whereas, long story short, Romania couldn't get the tech package for the SVD, so they upscaled an AKM to 7.62x54R to get their own DMR, and viola, you get the PSL

Love it Rad, I had wondered if you were going to remaster some of these older videos. the wood furniture on the AR15/M16 platform isn't completely unheard of. I used to have an AR15 with wood furniture, but it was very fragile. in just 2 years I had to replace it with more "traditional" plastic furniture because it was completely falling apart. the requirement for a hollowed out stock, and very thin handguards forces compromises which negatively impact structural integrity.

sorry to spam, I'm commenting as I watch through. the shovel stock/handmade rifle is actually a real world thing somebody did. I used to frequent gun forums, and back in the early 2000s you could purchase parts kits for AK47s (semi automatic versions anyway), that had everything you needed to build one, except for the receiver. these kits get around certain legislature that makes it illegal to import weapons from certain countries. one fellow decided to make a receiver out of a shovel blade, heating it, hammering it into the proper shape and drilling the holes where they needed to go. to top it off, he used the shovel handle for the stock.

So my theories for the first few guns are as follows:
R91 was only widely used in the DC military. Commonwealths had more independence than we thought, leading to each functioning as its own independent nation under the federal, sort of like a King rules many lands, but those lands are wildly different between each other.
The west, being the west, chose to use its overwhelming surplus of M16/M4 (or, Service and Carbine rifles) it never destroyed. The NCR reverse engineers these, and is easily capable of building their own, albeit without the advanced polymer materials pre war models used.
This leaves the R91 for the east, which was likely influenced by imported models (real G3 and FALs) used for RnD. Being DC, they overproduced the hell out of these without a thought to what their army would do in a civil conflict, and thats why they are everywhere.
Chinese rifle- I theorize that there was actually a real invasion taking place the day the bombs fell. We know from F4 the chinese had subs ready to fire everywhere, even as far as boston, so it stands to reason they intended for a full ground assault to take the Capitol, with nukes in their back pocket. Over a period of years, they moved hundreds, maybe thousands of troops into the DC area and hid huge stockpiles of rifles and bullets until the day came. Whether or not the troops ever received their orders, most of these caches would be discovered or, more likely, raided by survivors who knew of their locations, and thus became common as the supply grew, thanks to their simple design and reliable construction.
AK-47 (AK-103). AK-47 was in development as early as 1942, and the RPK was cited to be in heavy testing during 1945. The 47 would have certainly existed in Fallout, and as russia follows its real world history, so too would its successors and variants. This would lead to the 'AK vs M4' of Fallout, and the two nations paid obscene amounts of money to import the weapons of their rivals by the thousands for RnD, and then resold them to the public to offset costs. We can simply assume this doesnt change in Fallout, which is also why the M1 Garand appears in New Vegas (even today, Springfield Armory is empty but there are easily over half a million Garands stashed across the US military depots, and another 850,000 Surplus in South Korea alone), and why Colt 1911s are common too.

Theory for how the Children of Atom got all those old German weapons would be the Allies dumping millions of tons of weapons and munitions into the sea in various places after the end of the war, they had too much to even make scrapping them viable. They didn't want stockpiles around to end up in "the wrong hands", some of it had been poorly stored and transported during/after being captured and was damaged or degraded, in the case of ammunition and explosives unstable and in some cases massive amounts of chemical weapons.
The North Eastern American coastline was one of the spots, they still have not found all of it to this day when surveying the region for possible clean up. Maybe the Children of Atom found a scuttled barge full of those carbines.

noticed a slight error, the Lewis guns barrel shroud is not actually a water jacket, it uses cooling fins. the weapon is designed to force air through it when firing to better cool the barrel and was initially intended for aircraft use where heavy water filled jackets would be a detriment and the air speed of the plane would help cool it naturally.

I think the best explanation to the Radium Rifle is that the children found an original Volksturmgevehr somwhere in a museum, uppon investigating the gun a techincally skilled child of atom saw the cheap and simple source of firepower they could make by copying it's design.
After making it to the Nucleus they scavenged parts from old rusted army rifles scattered across the place and retooled them into their radium rifles with an extra radiation kick.
This is my best guess since there is no way the children found a stash of these in america, the weapons were rare even in 1945 and since they were issued to german civilians most were confiscated and melted down by the allies after the war so only a few survived to this day.

Imagine if the M14 design, the army want an something that can fill the role of an assault rifle, battle rifle and SMG or whatever the M1 and M2 carbine is consider to be, and that Arms combat say "WE can made something that fill all of those role, but with stamping technology". So they made, their own version of First being an either a 5.56x45mm rifle, that can be converted, by replacing the barrel and receives with one that chamber 7.62x51mm NATO/308 (differ from Holy Kalash 7.62x39) and at some point, they also chamber the thing in either .45ACP or more likely a cut or concept 30-30 Carbine round.
Which mean it is a rifle, build off of stamps technology, the same as the AR-18, G3 and AKM, but can be manufactures into three different rifle for three different role, out of the frame.

The Curvature is that of a 30 round 7.62x39mm, which is harsh the way it is to aid feeding the amount of rounds it intends to hold. If the model was correct, the magazine would curve a lot less harshly. Also note 30 round 5.45x39mm Magzines will not reliably feed 5.56x45mm rounds at full capacity. The Fallout 4 Assault rifle has always bothered me. Everything from it’s weight to it’s design tells me it is in fact not an assault rifle, but a suppressive LMG.
First off it’s about 20 pounds. That is machine gun weight.
Second, the water cooled jacket. Water cooled machine guns only have one true purpose in the modern world; suppressing human wave attacks. The same strategy China uses. It’s why Russia keeps a ton of old maxims on their border with China. Water cooled guns don’t overheat as long as they have water.
It makes sense only in that role or carried by a power armor user. No infantryman will be using that thing like a carbine.

What makes far more sense is Fallout 4s "assault rifle" being essentially Fallouts equivalent of the US militaries M249 SAW. A medium sized Lmg in 5.56mm and water cooled would be too heavy for a person to weild well effectively, but add power armour into the equation and it becomes very clear what its intended purpose is plus the fact one loading screen shows someone in T51 armour holding that weapon.
It would be a fantastic machine gun that can lay down fire for extended periods due to the water cooled barrel compared to an air cooled barrel. Which would make for a great juggernaut like weapon with all that armour on.

Also I refuse to believe that the wood on those guns hasn't rotted after like 200 years of neglect. Though there's also a real-life reason for having a wood stock being that wood absorbs energy wood far better than polymer stocks.

Just want to mention a small thing about the r91 likely being called G3 in the files
The reason for it likely being called g3 in the files is because both the fact that Cetme is not well known but also that earlier G3 variants had wooden furniture. Denmark for example had wooden G3 rifles because they leased their G3s from West Germany and West Germany (likely wanting to get rid of their older G3s) gave it to the Danes
