Inpax had romantic relations with both, but not at the same time. Corrida got pissy because his fiancee had an unknown past relationship with his rival, which made him seem inferior for not being the first since they're constantly competing over every little thing. Also, the knife was explicitly not the finishing blow, but did bring suspicion onto Engarde, which was Andrews' intention.

no one respects Phoenix's lawyering because he's never solved a case without a ghost hand-holding him through cross examinations. He's made a few smart deductions, 1-4 and 1-5 come to mind. Mia was barely involved in 1-4 and it's not even clear if Phoenix really is hearing her when he starts to "turn his thinking around" about von Karma, or hallucinating from stress. It's not realistic, Phoenix does a fine job and usually offers enough that it is plausible that clients were innocent, and there is enough doubt to get them cleared. The game takes it further, and if you don't prove it was specifically someone else, then they will convict the defendant just to convict someone. Phoenix's more crazy logic leaps come from trying to convict someone else, which he shouldn't have to even do.

Exactly. in America at least (where this game supposedly takes place, though its more like "Japanifornia"), even someone who is gruesomely, obviously guilty-as-sin is entitled to a defense attorney. The particulars of sentencing and other such things (is it first degree? second degree? was the act aggravated? etc etc etc) are never recommended to be left to a layman, and even someone who is very evidently guilty should be heard properly, tried properly and sentenced properly. After all, someone who mugged someone can be obviously guilty, but if they aren't represented properly, they could get something egregious like the chair - and having recourse against that can't happen if they aren't adequately represented. 100% agree with this comment.

This isn't about Phoenix being a bad lawyer, it's about whether he's gonna blindly defend his clients or pursue the truth regardless of how it makes his client. In this case, he knows fully well that his client contracted a killer to murder his rival which means he is actively defending a murderer. Now he has to figure out if he's just going to continue going down that road or if he's going to join Edgeworth on a new path, seeking out the truth of what really happened regardless of who is actually guilty.

Fair point that every prosecutor he has faced has used underhanded tactics, met only be his shear luck. He is a good person, but he's not really a great lawyer.

Everyone jumps around about the updated autopsy report, but Edgeworth did that once, and Mia actually didn't die right away because she was able to say some things before she fell unconscious. Phoenix meanwhile is literally swiping stuff from crime scenes and not letting the police look at them before he presents it. I think the grumps can be forgiven for not realizing, though, they didn't play 1-5 where Phoenix gets called out on this and almost ends up in hot water over it.
I think they're also missing that Phoenix asking about whether Edgeworth is suggesting as a defense attorney that he should lie and cheat is a dig at the von karma method, which he thinks Edgeworth still does, because he's still super mad about the note Edgeworth left.
