People often think there is only one way to do things, and everyone else is wrong. The point of this video, was to show just how easy it is to improvise when doing wall repairs, and still get good results.
My partner showed me a hole in the wall he was embarrassed by and used to cover with a painting. I told him it was okay and an easy fix. This video has proved that! Thank you so much for informing on how to fix it. 😊

I did the exact same repair with the small piece of 2x3 wood and some extra drywall. Except, I bevelled all the edges (wall and filler piece). About a decade later, I ran the repair by a drywall guy and he told me that instead of making the filler panel square, his recommendation was to use a round shaped filler panel utilizing an appropriate sized kitchen pot lid as a template. He told me that this would prevent possible filler cracking in the corners.
Gary regarding any rude comments...unfortunately it's new way of the world...don't give them any time. This was really useful for me, thankyou for the effort.

It's a shotty job. Anyone that showed up with a Wal-Mart 3 pack of plastic putty knives would have been gone immediately. That flex in the patch piece as you mud is a no no. Look up wing patch or California patch and for God's sake get a metal tapping knife. I'd like to see that patch with a parallel flash light. And you should never sand through mesh tape. There are professionals with quality instructional videos. The rest of us professionals are doing the work in real life. I don't post car mechanic videos because I'm a hobbyist and not a seasoned professional
Thanks for the great video. I’ve done drywall repair way back like maybe 15 years ago, but kinda needed a bit of a refresh course. This is basically how I remember doing it. I am no expert but I did work for U.S.G in Galena Park for nineteen years and was in the Quality Control Dept. @@GarryPurcell yes you use a speed-square to make sure the patch piece and hole is perfectly square .I cut the patch first then put over hole to mark n cut tight.u can gradually shave patch or hole to fit nice and tight n slowly tightly fit flush.also don't turn the patch piece with dark side facing outward cause you will need much more spackle n labour to cover dark side
@@GarryPurcell there a beveled way to shave the patch so that it never can fall inside wall because you have no backing by cutting patching like 1 /16 bigger than hole n gradually shave it beveled to fit tight

Don't know why this came up on my feed but I'm grateful :D Nice neat job and the trick of adding a small slat behind the hole is a great tip for supporting the section of replacement plasterboard. I love fixing things and have done a few patches like this in the last few years - the first one I did was a shallow hole where I had to move an electric cable a few inches - builders left cable in a daft place - but what did I use to create some scaffold for the plaster within the hole?? Yes, a few balls of newspaper! Worked a treat but the trick is to add a few slops of filler onto the newspaper balls after plugging them into the gap and smooth them towards the hole edges; however, don't try to fill the hole/crevice completely to finish the job in one shot. Instead, let the thing dry; then come back in a couple of days and you've got a solid but rough and shallow hole that will easily adhere the final small wodge of filler. This will be easy to smooth off when wet cause it's not too thick; then come back in another couple of days and sand, paint and you're done.
I personally would use the method shown with the timber like you have but I’d fix it around the edge of the hole so that the edges are solid rather than the wood down the centre so that there’s movement on the joints

Very true but the proof is in the end result, innit? This was a great job done without full access to tools, materials etc You can't see any blemish on the wall when job is complete so that is good enough for me!
Great job there, also folks, when you go to sanding it, do not use an electric sander, but use your hand with sand paper like this gentlemen is using. I learned the hard way using an orbital sander, yes she did the job well, but the silica within the plaster will coat the sanders brushes, then you have to take the sander apart and replace the brushes ..which is more time, and money.
I can't believe you did not screw the sheetrock patch to the support board or stick. this is just crazy. i have been doing this for years and the patches are amazingly strong.
Basically how I learned it, we called it a "hot patch". I have a cordless dewalt dry wall cut out tool I use. I dont always use tape. Ive used paint stirrers for small holes especially if im on the fly.
I've done this before but I screw the new piece of dry wall to the timber to fix it so it doesn't move. Or you can use a cut piece of dry wall instead of timber

Well done by showing using just simple tools to do a job well, Mr. Garry Purcell. My uncle, a former Col of the SAS taught me guns and patch things up using basic tools too.
The cut out was put in backwards, and it was taped and puttied elevated from the wall around it. It's best to let the cut out recess a little as that's much easier to fill. Not to mention, doing a home repair shouldn't be accompanied by "Doesn't have to be perfect, don't have to be too particular, doesn't have to be exact" the whole time you're doing it.
It makes little difference for a small hole in an internal wall, as long as you give a primer coating providing good tooth, for the final coat of paint.

Nice concept but I thought I was going to have a stroke with his crooked cuts. Whenever I cut drywall I usually cut back to the studs, but this one was borderline cut or patch. Thought he was going to cut a finger off. And get a workbench. What was he cutting on? Microwave or an AV receiver? Spackel? Too large of a hole. Use mud. Especially if you are using tape. Use a taping knife. Wet it to keep material from clumping and dragging across workspace. End result...did it matter, not really. Just pride mainly. Plus I can clean up alot less with a wet sponge instead of sanding. Thanks for the idea though and the bravery of putting this up. Has over a million views so that's quite an accomplishment in itself.

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure I could cut a square to those tolerances you mention, but its nice to know the repair could have be done that way.

There are plenty of ways to repair wall damage, and you don't need to have expensive tools to do it.
Who else put a whole in there wall and is trying to fix it themselves? Just me? Ok

I've done drywall work all my life ' Hey if that works for you that's all that matters. I'm more impressed that have replied to so many comments. I'm sure Alot have found the video helpfull and if I was in a pinch I'd use this method
So I'm giving you a 👍
Thank you for your kind words, most people don't bother to read the video description before commenting.
I've seen walls repaired with Rolled up Paper backing, Drywall backing, Chicken wire covered in Newspaper, Corrugated Cardboard backing, Burlap Sack backing, and all held up well, some for close to 100 years.
I had to borrow and scrounge what i could to complete the task at hand.
P.S. When I have all my tools with me I normally use the method below to repair walls.

Yeah Alot of people jump to conclusions and are quick to judge without knowing the facts.
So yeah you handled the comments well.
@@keithclark486 Again thank you for your kind words.
I wish you and your family, all the best for the coming festive season.
Thanks for handy information regarding sanding.
I can't believe you did not screw the sheetrock patch to the support board or stick. this is just crazy. i have been doing this for years and the patches are amazingly strong.
Please Read the Video Description, before commenting any further.
Basically how I learned it, we called it a "hot patch". I have a cordless dewalt dry wall cut out tool I use. I dont always use tape. Ive used paint stirrers for small holes especially if im on the fly.
You hit it on the head.
You make do with what's available at the time.
Turned out well, definitely recommend screwing the board to the backing timber to give it more strength then scrim tape alone
Good work 👍🏻
Good advice regarding the screw.
I've done this before but I screw the new piece of dry wall to the timber to fix it so it doesn't move. Or you can use a cut piece of dry wall instead of timber
Thanks for sharing how you repair your walls.
I normally use this method below.

Would you not need to glue the new piece to the wood ?
Its not really necessary, as the timber is just a backing.

Well done by showing using just simple tools to do a job well, Mr. Garry Purcell.
My uncle, a former Col of the SAS taught me guns and patch things up using basic tools too.
That was what I'm trying to show in this video, that you don't need fancy tools to make an acceptable repair.
You have some good pointers in your comment.
Why are you putting the peace of drywall backwards?
It makes little difference for a small hole in an internal wall, as long as you give a primer coating providing good tooth, for the final coat of paint.
Gary.... great approach and great results. Simple, straightforward. Keep the videos coming!
I have another wall repair you might like, using a few more tools.

I just filled in a hole in the wall that me (13 year old ) and my 9 year old sister made a hole and we had none of these material but this is what we used
Piece of cardboard
White paint
White Clay
Hot glue and prayers that our parents wouldn't find out.
I wish you Good luck, regarding your parents not finding out.
Thank you
Yes Gary.. I removed a medicine cabinet and used wood for filler.. cut Sheetrock and fiber taped ..then plastered and sanded.. I'm very very pleased. 😁

If you read the video description, it explains why the repair was done this way.
P.S. I have a better instruction video below, (when I had all my tools with me.)

Gary since u had 2 pieces of wood wooden it make the repair a lot stronger if you installed wood pieces 1 to far left 1 to the far right just saying
I was thinking the same thing. That way he not only would have had a better fit but also the convenience of stabilizing both sides.
I normally do use two pieces of wood.
ruclips.net/video/JmcR9TW4mM0/видео.html
But on the day of this video I didn't have my tools with me, and had to borrow some, and I sourced materials out of a dump bin. (I only found two screws onsite that I could use for the repair).
The video description has more details.
@@GarryPurcell bahahaha bullshit now the excuse roll in you had a knife and scraper you could of done the job quicker just using compound and scrap pieces of plasterboard.
Awesome 👏🏽 I have to repair a similar size hole on my dads living room wall now can do it by myself thank you so much for sharing your repair project.
Glad I could help

I don't pay much attention to John, he seems to have an inferiority complex. haha.
P.S. I'm having some fun with him at the moment, his posts are becoming rather outrageous.
His voice reminds me of a childhood movie when they always have a mysterious man telling what's going on
Nothing like a good horror movie just before bedtime.😂
Thanks for the help, Gary! Patching an old medicine cabinet hole in the bathroom & this video was perfect for the job!
Glad it helped!
