I ordered the 64g (in the blue that I wanted ) but at last minute I switched to 256g ( in space gray) because of the per cost benefit. Also my current over 5-year old 32g iPad battery has to be plugged at all times. My biggest gripe with Apple is that they didn’t have 128g option this time around. I think current smart phones have a standard of 128g so definitely agree with you.

I bought 64gb blue 💙. 256gb varient was way out off my budget. I've dropped it couple of times yet there is not damage (I am using case tho) so don't worry. It is a great machine for students I take notes on iPad daily. I often download shows and big size games but still I have never used more than half of my storage so if your tight on budget than don't worry 64gb is not much but it's enough. The thing about adding a micro SSD slot is that Apple, never one to compromise one of their profit centers, has a pretty good gig going with their iCloud subscription revenue I suspect. They purposely hobble these machines in that area so we are all forced to accept the monthly fees for convenient storage. Just my 2 cents …

You’re wrong about speed of storage impact. It’s maybe one of the most important thing in any device. Apple specifically makes their storage drive faster and increases single threaded performance, because of the features that they use to compensate lack of RAM. Adding more RAM is helpful but responsiveness of your device very much depends on speed of main storage.
For Apple it’s maybe better to have users complaining about lack of SD card slot, than implementing it and dealing with their devices getting slower and users don’t understanding why.
I personally bought iPad pro because of ProMotion and FaceID, and I really love this thing.

I’m able to get apple care for mine so if I want to replace the screen or the battery, it’ll be a brand new Pro again.

It's NOT a personal decision: the biggest difference is the storeage size.
So yes, if you truly are not planning on doing much with it, then you don't need > 64GB.
Maybe can get by with 32GB.
You say no problem: use the cloud.
But what if your connectivity is bad, or non-existent?
    Like you are off-grid?
    Or travelling?
The reason that the M1 was used by Apple in the iPad was because it was CHEAPER for Apple to do it.
    Volumes of scale.
It mean't they could use the SAME chip in lots of their systems.
But OK, you said that, more or less.
The big advantage for an iPad in the M1/M2 is their energy efficiency.

Storage speed does matter. One of the reasons most Android flagships killed the SD card slot is because if there’s an option for it, idiots are gonna put all their crap onto the slow ass SD card and complain their phones being slow. Most phone users don’t know what’s the difference between NVMe, UFS and eMMC, they only look at how large the storage is. Even if there is the option, what you can do with that SD card would be highly limited by the system or Apps.

I wouldn't buy a 64 gb, so consider this -> if you have to decide between the 256 gb iPad Air 5th Gen or the iPad Pro 3rd Gen .. I would pick the iPad Pro 3rd Gen because it has better camera modular, much much better quad speaker system (you need to hear it to believe how better it is), Promotion screen , 500 nits display which is slightly better than the iPad Air ,slightly larger screen real estate & overall a better looking device. what could you really do with an M1 chip in the iPad Air when your display is stupid 60hz ? it's gonna be choppy compared to 120 hz no matter what.

If it was even 96GB it might be OK, but 64GB is just sad. Honestly if you do so little on your iPad that 64GB is plenty, you should probably be buying the base iPad, as you surely aren't making use of M1 chip.

iPad Air clearly is the best choice in Apple's iPad lineup, but you definitely need more than 64 measly GB (which is not even what you really can use) to install more than 2,5 apps and not everyone is comfortable loading their stuff to the cloud. So the base Air is not an option I'm afraid unless you just want to browse the web and read your mails. Also I'm not so sure that Apple is going to offer prolonged update support, what reason would you have to buy a new tablet, when the hardware itself is still sufficient 5 years from now, this is a double-edged sword.

Take that, Android (Samsung) Fan Bois!...and...with the upcoming Mac Pro desktop and it's next-gen M-series SoC, Apple will be setting off Code Browns at AMD and Intel. Granted, it will be crazy expensive for the average Jane or Joe Mac user....but over a shorter and shorter time span, Apple will indeed migrate those processor more broadly "downward" as prices drop.
