    Having slightly wider skis will certainly help especially when learning, in this video are used a ski about 88 under foot.

    Absolutely fantastic lessons. I had one lesson when I was beginning, and now two solid weeks of skiing later, I'm getting pretty confident on most terrain (and working up to terrain parks). These lessons are the reason and I've purchased the apps, more out of support for a great service than anything else.

    Nice video. A couple other pointers about skiing the pow:
    * Keep your skis a little closer together. This increases their flotation in the deep stuff
    * Don't lean forward as aggressively as you do on a groomer. You don't want to lean back either - weight should be distributed over the soles of your feet to slightly forward
    * Avoid big evergreen trees. Tree wells can form under their low lying branches - if you fall into one it can be very dangerous
    * Speed is your friend - you move slowly in powder, and getting out of it once you stall can be a nightmare
    * Don't turn on your edges, Turning in powder is more about steadily shifting your weight over the soles of your feet. Violent turns can get stuck

      These are good tips. I also find lifting the uphill ski helps initiate the turn in fresh snowfall, deep powder, or spring snow (note - I ski in the northeast US, lots of moisture in most of our snow).

      We often find that it's worthwhile taking a step back, getting the basics strong and then you'll progress much faster. Especially if you feel like you've hit a bit of a wall with your skiing technique. A good strong stance and basic technique is so important. Get it perfected on piste and you'll find off-piste so much easier.

    When skiing loose snow I taught myself to ski, not on one edge like I do on packed snow , but spread my weight evenly over both soles.
    Groomers, one edge of downhill ski. Powder, both soles of both feet.
    I learned to do this by skiing powder whenever it was there. Always looking for the loose stuff. Find a slope that is not steep. Stand and jump up and down landing on both feet evenly. Then start moving down a gentle slope and maintain jumping with both feet evenly in a straight line. Slowly go from straight to making small side to side variations. Even if you think you are making barely any turn radius, looking back at your tracks you might find they are quite s shaped and not too different from other tracks. Progress to steeper slopes but maintain even pressure over the soles of both skis making your turns longer and more rounded accordingly.
    After time you will instinctively change from one edge to both soles and back as you charge across changing conditions.
    Modern skis are also a lot more forgiving than older straight skis and I find if I dont change from both soles to one edge completely when hitting packed stuff, the skis will turn nicely under me like they should anyway, if the snow is fresh and deepish. Ice will always be a one edge affair.

    Certainly don't try and sit its not as different as you may think, try and link some turns together you will start to feel what works trust you're feeling. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you must sit or lean back stand and balance on your feet.

    Very nice instructions, very clear! But I was wondering what your position should be when skiing in deep powder, about as deep as my knees? Should I bent my legs more, almost like sitting?

    hey, this may not be an "advanced" question, but I can ski all the runs at my local ski mountain.. and a double black diamond at that. But it doesn't seem that... hard per say, I can't do the stuff that you show, I just kinda do some "skidding turns" if that makes sense, sometimes I can make good straight parallel turns but most of the time one ski is dragging. What level am I at? should I get an instructor and go back to basics? The way to put it is, I can get down the mountain,.. just not well

    More Pow tips:
    a tighter stance, use both legs and feet together like one large leg.
    Less flexion in ankle, keep calf tight in back cuff of boot.
    More active with larger joints(knee,hip)
    Keep feet ahead of hips and hands in disciplined position for balance.

    Hey, I have some problem in powder, I don't find a well way to stand on my skis. When i'm on a piste, I keep in mind to put weight in front but when i do the same off-pist the front of my skis often go to deep in snow and i fell. I tried to put the weight a little bit more on rear, it goes better but i have to force a lot more and it's hard for the legs so i'dont think it's good either. Hope you have some tips. you don't need special skis to ski powder I learned to ski snorkel snow on slalom skis back in the 60's I have skied powder over my head on the same. Wider skis do make it easier, but the one of the biggest things is don't try to turn until you have some speed you can't start a turn going as slowly as you can on a packed groomed run. Get your skis closer together so they act as a unit,. weight should be pretty much equal on both skis, don't sit back you'll burn your thighs out in a couple of turns. Try to stay centered over the ski with a little heel bias (this is for deep powder) for 5inches over a packed run stay center over your arch. There are vids on here from the Whistler and Big White ski schools look at them. Then go get a lesson. I am a PSIA Level III inst. which is like the CSIA Level 4 both the highest cert level. Make sure you get a level III PSIA or Level 4 CSIA don't take a powder lesson from anyone less qualified. Level II PSIA can teach the basics and beginning parallel. Level !s are for beginners

  • @MisterE103

    Virgin powder is easy to float atop of, but how do you ski on powder that's been tracked over as I encountered recently. i.e. the slope looks almost like a field of small moguls and it interferes with you smoothly turning? My skis were getting hung up as they pierced thru the mounds of snow?

    • @chapmandb
      @chapmandb 10 лет назад +1

      There may be better tips out there, but if they are really chopped up powder from other skiers or wind, then I just convince myself I need a little faster so my skis can float more and cut through it. Give it a try next time. If it is moguls, then I traverse to the next powder area! :)

    What if the powder is up to your knees?

    • @Thomasbree1
      @Thomasbree1 10 лет назад +1

      First of all, then you're a lucky man. About the technique: Since the powder slows down all your movements, take more time for every turn. To avoid stopping on a too gentile slope, make your S-track tide and long. When the slope is steep and you want to control your speed, you will have to get yourself a bit out of the snow to make a nice short turn. To do this, give more pressure on both of your ski's when you start your turn and keep them close together. Good luck!

  • @jondstewart
    @jondstewart 6 лет назад

    People say you need to have fatter and wider skis for powder, but over 30 years ago and before, a downhill ski was a downhill ski. I can ski perfectly on freshly groomed runs, but powder is a bitch! I'll find out when I go to Utah next month, because Alaska's Alyeska is difficult with powder, but easy with fresh groomed providing they aren't icy.

    • @skng
      @skng  9 лет назад +4

      Hi Gerwin He. Skiing powder is a very similar technique to skiing piste but with the added resistance of the deeper snow. You need a good strong central stance with your hands in front so you can drive through the snow and keep the momentum going. As Darren mentions in the film, start out on the ungroomed piste after a snowfall to get that feeling of resistance then progress onto a nice wide powder face clear of obstacles. Keep linking the turns in a rhythm and keep that momentum going. Enjoy the powder and stay safe.

    • @johnfenton7990
      @johnfenton7990 9 лет назад +1

      Gerwin He Don't lean back. Adjust your feet so they're slightly more forward. If you body position is good, don't adjust it. Hope this helps.

    • @lightsw0rd
      @lightsw0rd 8 лет назад +2

      +Gerwin This is almost nothing compared to real off-road powder, when the powder is deeper you have to lean back a little so that your skis are a little bit like this / into the snow, otherwise you won't get anywhere... Check some free ride videos of extreme skiers in slo-mo, you'll learn more from there than here.

    • @SkiDaBird
      @SkiDaBird 8 лет назад

      +Gerwin He Don't lean back. Stay in the attack position and be smooth. Leaning back will only put you off balance and so when you inevitably get rocked, you are going to fall.

    • @lightsw0rd
      @lightsw0rd 8 лет назад +1

      There always has to be something out of both worlds, you must lean back yet not too far. If you would ski as usual, leaning forward, you would get stuck. I said you have to lean back a little. I am not trying to be a hypocrite but if you skied on fresh powder you would know what I mean, or you just don't understand what am I trying to say. Peace.

      Jeffrey Kim Yup, they'd be wide enough... I'm no expert myself, but I wonder if you're over turning by rotating your shoulders? It's the most common mistake I see on the slopes. A great tip I was taught is to hold ONE ski pole out in front of you in both hands, hands shoulder width apart. If you now imagine a straight line drawn at 90 degrees across the slope, as you ski down, keep the pole in front of you parallel to the 90 degree line. This way your shoulders should always face squarely down hill. Might help. 😃

    This channel / series is epic, _except_ for this video. There are literally no instructions for powder skiing in it! Couple tips for the complete beginner: Skis close together, even balance between them, inside ski shouldn't wander too far forward, and most of all, try bouncing up to the top, then down into the pow, then back to the top... once you get that feeling, start turning in the "up" cycle of your "dolphin like" bouncing. DONT lean back to try to get your tips up, just flow down into the snow and bounce and float back to the top. Also, pow will slow you down, so until you get steep, basically point it straight and don't stray too far from the fall line. Good luck!

    And of course no helmet when riding powder, like the instructor!

    All your videos are on perfect groomed runs and basically untouched powder. Bumps which are soft and rounded. These are not the conditions which most skiers encounter. film on actual cut up trails, nasty bumps and previously skied powder

    If you are talking about powder turns, why are you carving? Flat skis is the ideal way to ski powder. I am a visual learner as well as may others. Bad Image In my opinion because you are showing one technique and not the correct one.great skiing, but demo the task, smooth, flat skis.

      You got it. A confident central stance will help you much more in the off-piste. A progressive pole swing can help with this too. Are you heading out powder hunting this winter? Cheers, Noddy.

    The devil is in the detail,every body can improve their skiing you probably have a few fundamental problems that can be easily helped, I'm sure some instruction will make a big difference to your skiing. Also three years is not very long!

      Are you really criticizing his skiing? His form is absolutely perfect, textbook. I'm sure he would absolutely ski rings around you.

    Not very thorough and the skier never plants his pole while the narrator says to! Lot better vids than this one!

    Also, while skiing anything hard, I can only take it slow and kinda make it up that way, if I hit ice or something, I can't even control where I go anymore. So it's risky, but I've been doing it for 3 years. I just don't know exactly where to go in terms of help or advice on what to work on. I'm in a weird situation. Completely self taught skier here.
