  • It's the biggest tax whistleblowing bombshell yet. Kings, presidents, prime ministers and former prime ministers are among those outed so far in the Pandora Papers. It's the same sophisticated shell game exposed by LuxLeaks, the Panama Papers and other data dumps that name and shame the high and mighty who stash their cash far from prying eyes. So what's new since last time? Will the Pandora Papers change the conversation?

    That a former director of the IMF has been caught in this aswell shows you just how morally bankrupt they all are.

    Legal is not always 'right'.
    Illegal is not always 'wrong' thats what legislative laws are for. Oligarchs all have the same DNA. Regardless of country of opportunity.

      That would give free hand for criminals to do illegal activity because it is right for them.

    I wonder why the one commentator focusing on the legal position of the subjects of the papers is so adversarial towards the journalist.

      It's certainly very odd. I have no clue about the facts but he seemed as angry as someone who was defending a close friend or drinking buddy or something. DSK is the last human being on Earth you'd want to be defending, why grab onto that monster to make some obscure point about moral vs legal, or about the Moroccan tax system??

      He likes the status quo. Using old and very tired arguments about investment to make his case? (Even his silly chocolate comment reveals a rather simplistic view of the world.)

    Greg is trying hard to convince himself that it’s OK to be immoral if it’s legal. I’d rather break some of the laws meant legalize corruption, than sink to immorality.

    The problem of tax evasion (avoidance ) runs through all levels of society. We only feel it is morally wrong when we see the amount of money the mega rich are saving through these off shore accounts.

    • @fredatlas4396
      @fredatlas4396 2 года назад

      Because say a few ordinary workers getting away with say £1000 less tax in a year, doesn't have anywhere near the same impact on our society. Here in the UK the rich are getting very much richer while those struggling to survive now, ordinary working people who may be on minimum wage or not that much more are getting a lot poorer. Inequality has been increasing lot since tories running our country since 2010. They tell us there isn't enough money to fund public services, but since 2010 have been giving away our money in big tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporate businesses and the higher payed. Also after 11 yrs of tory government the poor, low income, lower payed, less well off workers are actually paying more in tax as a percentage of their income than people on higher wages. This is because of all the indirect stealth taxes we all pay, vat which has gone up to 20% since tories running the country since 2010, council tax going up 4.5% every year so far and it compounds, so after 10 yrs of 4.5% rises it won't just be a total increase of 45% over that period, it will be just over 55% total increase. And if for example a millionaire or billionaire doesn't pay any tax that could mean the difference between another NHS Hospital closing or not in just 1 year's worth of unpaid taxes, for example. And now to add insult to injury NI contributions are going up which will affect the less well off and poor people disproportionately much more

    OECD tax agreement will exclude US companies like Amazon and will prevent European countries to levy taxes. It would be a giant win for US tech companies and giant revenue loss for Europe.

    It has been awhile since I've watched "The Debate". It may be infuriating at times, but always informative, always food for thought.
    In the past, and I cannot remember exactly which episodes but more than once over the years, I have seen Copetas take this same simultaneously obtuse and aggressive approach, that apparently assumes anyone attacking the monied status quo is naive at best and more likely unthinking or stupid.
    Obviously there are legal ways to avoid paying taxes and contributing to the care of one's country and people. Copetas acts as if this is news to the rest of us. What does he think is the point of exposure?
    Put another way, and pardon the vernacular, but what is his trip?

    Not all the avoided tax is some stashed wealth, a lot of it is just rerouted as investment. If it gets taxed the companies will just invest lesser. This issue isn't as straight forward, the lady was the only one that understood the real problem in this discussion. Of course there needs to be some way to deal with leaders stashing wealth but that can be accomplished by having special laws for those in public service. Anyways, its good that these things are being discussed openly, i would prefer less moralizing as solutions can be found only if there is reality based public discussion.

      It's interesting, I found him irritating for most of this segment. But I think he made his point way near the end of it.. Basically if people do want to close these loopholes, they should organize to end them within their own countries, because going after foreign countries would be hypocritical (and, imo, imperialistic)
