The Black Cauldron was a strange movie to make as a stand-alone in the first place because it's #2 in a quintilogy. A lot of the darkness make more sense in the larger context. The books are a must read for fantasy lovers.
My buddy and I regularly quote heavyweights at work, “why don’t you come out and join me Cody... oh on my way” lol rescuers down under was also one of my childhood favorites! Thanks for the list, have a couple to check out.
One movie I would like to add is BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS (1971). It's a mixture of live-action and animation, much like MARY POPPINS, about an English witch, played by Angela Lansbury, using witchcraft to thwart a Nazi invasion of England. This was a family favorite, and we wore out a VHS tape of this watching it with my cousins.
Love the Black Cauldron, Black Hole, and Rescuers Down Under. A favorite still missing from Disney+ is Dragonslayer, made by Disney UK in the early 80's. Without Dragonslayer, there wouldn't have been Jurassic Park - so much of the special effects were pioneered in Dragonslayer. A solid if basic story as well. A real shame they've buried it out back like they used to with Black Cauldron.
I'm 51. The Rescuers is my favorite Disney movie. I saw it at the theater I guess in 1977. I didn't know they made sequel. I will make sure to watch it with my wife. She's always wanting me to find a good movie at home.
liked it but felt it should have used less cgi, some slower moments they could have gone with real dogs. but then people cry about animal cruelty there's no winning these days 😭
I was really hoping to see The Apple Dumpling Gang on here. Saw that at the drive in. The Black Hole, The Black Cauldron, love it. Great list, not peppered by all the Marvel films. Thank you for leaving the last three Star Wars films of this list, they were horrible.
I watched The Apple Dumpling Gang a lot as a kid and was super excited to watch it with my kids when Disney+ launched... sadly, I don't think it holds up.
So true. Another great movie on here that's PG rated is David Lynch's "Straight Story." Excellent film and the farthest thing you'd think Lynch would do. Also it's based on a true story. Highly recommended if you haven't seen that. It's on Disney+
The Black Cauldron is amazing! - and I loved The Rescuers Down Under as a kid, always watched that one more than the other Disney VHS tapes laying around at the house.
Great list for Disney + DVD! Also congrats on 201k subs! Next up a million! My go to channel for movie selections. Another gem is David Lynch's The Straight Story. So far from what Lynch ever did and his only G rated movie. A gem. I appreciate everything you bring to your great channel.
After I signed Disney Plus, Willow, Black Hole and 20.000 Under the Sea were the first movies I watched in the plataform and I love then all. I also recomend: The Journey of Natty Gann, The Mighty Ducks, Return to Oz, Adventures in Babysitting, Cool Runnings, Ewoks the Battle for Endor, George of the Jungle, Who Framed Roger Rabitt, Splash, Big Business and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Just to start!
I've just got Disney plus set up for me and mine so obviously you were my first port of call mate. Covid has thrown us completely through the ringer money wise but I will get back to you with proper support I promise. Awesome stuff mate 👍
I went to the movies when I was 7 and saw The Black Hole. I still remember the feelings I had at certain times. Maximillian scared me to death, and the feeling of isolation in the movie was pretty good. I cried at the end over Tex Avery’s character. It does look dated, but still a decent movie.
The bigger question is when Disney will place its recently-acquired (Fox) Searchlight films on a streaming platform. Oscar BP’s Birdman, The Shape of Water, 12 years a Slave and Slumdog are all in that group - along with other grownup gems like 3 Billboards and The Sessions.
@@marcusinfinity9386 excellent! We don’t subscribe, but will certainly consider. Hopefully Darren will do reviews related to this. Appreciate your response.
I remember seeing the original Rescuers when I was a wee little tyke. Can't remember if I saw it in the theater or on TV afterwards, but the fact that I recall it some 40 years later says something.
My wife and I watched Iron Will on you recommendation from your last Disney+ video and we both loved it! Can't wait to watch rescuers down under! Never seen it before but I remember loving the original!
Loving the subtleties in the narrative: you say 'uplifting' just as a guy gets knocked on his ass by a dog and 20000 Leagues 'just doesn't rise to the top'.
You're absolutely right about The Rescuers Down Under! Terrific underrated film from Disney. I remember seeing it in a theater with my son, and being blown away by the animation. It was just a hint of what was to come with The Lion King and after, but still… wonderful. I later went back and saw the original Rescuers and was terribly disappointed. 🤣
Thanks for the update Darren, I didn't even know home on the range was on Disney plus. I will probably watch heavyweights later, great job with this video
Funny, when I think of George C. Scott I think of Day Of The Dolphin, and how he refused both his Oscar wins because he believed the competition was not a benefit between actors. I think one of his refusals was over Patton.
The Black Cauldron has always been a movie that I loved. When I was younger I always wondered why Disney didn’t talk about it more or why there wasn’t a ride about it at one of their parks or why the characters weren’t featured in one of the parades. I think I was 8 when that movie came out and my mother was a very strict Christian woman. However, she let me watch and go see the Black Cauldron. I would imagine the reason why is that my whole family loved Disney. We went to Disney World at least once every year even though we lived 27 hours away from Disney World. A lot of years we would go twice and of course always stay on property. Since it was Disney I think she just assumed it was fine. I loved that movie from the very start. I think now the reason why attitudes have changed regarding it is because my generation has grown up now to be parents and we loved it. We therefore have shared it with our children and we’re talking about it. Also the things that we saw as horrible back then have changed.
I saw the Black Cauldron as a kid, only caught it on TV so never caught the ending. But I never thought it as dark but rather magical and intriguing but then again I loved horror movies as a kid too.
The Rescuers (the original) was probably my VERY favorite movie as a kid (I'm old enough to remember its original release) -- so I feel personally attacked now!🤣🤣 But honestly, this is a GREAT list!!
I absolutely agree! I was born in 71 so I was six when it came out. Me and some of my siblings were brought to see it in the cinema in Dublin and we loved it so much that we were brought to see it again about a week later! Fantastic film x.
As BGB thabun pointed out, for The U.S.A., WWII didn't start until December of 1941. So, to put an even sharper point on it, do some math, and spell it out for you (cuz I don't have much faith in your cognitive abilities given your original comment) that means that there were 11 (eleven) whole months + a few days (January 1, 1941 - December 7, 1941) that The U.S. WASN'T engaged in WWII. That would happen on December 8, 1941 when The U.S. Senate & The U.S. House of Representatives, together as "Congress," officially declared war on the nation of Japan. HISTORY BITCHES! Just when you think you know something about it, you realize you shoulda read a book (or at least watched another/different RUclips video.)

Really enjoying your picks lately. The Black Hole is an odd mix of kid friendly and dark themes. You have to get over the goofiness of some of the robots but it has a great story and some awesome effects. One of my favorite sci-fi movies.

Thanks for the wonderful video. Found a few I have not seen. Thank you Thank you for bringing light to The Black Hole, one of my all time favorite movies from my childhood. Hard to find, unless your a Disney Plus subscriber. 👍😊
If you think Disney tried to bury "The Black Cauldron" try finding a dvd of "Song of the South". That is a movie they truely buried....lol. I remember having to import it from Japan in 2012.
The Black Hole imprinted my brain to love Sci-Fi and such... And yes, The Black Cauldron is a much watch for kids to understand good and evil, to teach them. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea also imprinted my brain for Adventure.
I loved the older live action movies from my own childhood, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes Gus That Darn Cat Unidentified Flying Oddball Swiss Family Robinson
I don't know if it's on Disney + but if you enjoyed 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea or The Black Hole I would highly recommend Island At The Top Of The World.
If you liked the Black Cauldron, seek out the trilogy of books that it is sourced. They are elementary school age, but still good books I remember reading when I was a kid. Lloyd Alexander is the author.
I appreciate your videos I noticed that you never actually said the title of Millions for people who are visually impaired might be an issue Love what you do keep up the good work
disney plus im least fav streaming service that i own, i need help finding things on there so this video was very helpful. Thank you and i enjoy this channel very much
I remember as a kid seeing The Black Hole when it came out and it weirded me out! Definitely not inspiring like Star Wars but intriguing in a dark kinda way, especially those droid things with mirrors for faces. Lol. I still bought the collector card series. Damn that was a long time ago!😁
Dude, I for one love your commentary and the way you explain movies but... calling a movie a sports movie without the sports is like calling a soup a soup without any water... LOL!!
I watched your video and was excited about James and the Giant Peach, I love that movie and wanted to watch it with my 8 year old, however, when I searched for it on November 17 2020, it is not available on Disney+ in the US.
Okay what's going on with avoiding Peacock Darren? The peacock app has a lot better choices than most of the things that were on this Disney list. Peacock also has fewer ads than tubi per movie. It also has many titles available on the free version. It's a win all around. Hoping a peacock list emerges at some point. peacock app even makes it easy to find the quality stuff. They literally have a rotten tomatoes approved list which brings some of the good stuff out and much more good stuff can be found by digging a little. I hope you'll take the time at some point to really check out the peacock app as far as movie offerings. There's quite a few good choices hidden within if you'll give it a chance.
@@DarrenVanDam poll. I'm sure there's more than you think. Love the recommendations either way. Keep up the good work . I certainly enjoy it but if I were doing recommendations along these lines I would try to cover as many bases as possible. Doesn't get as stale as cycling through amazon, netflix, tubi all the time. Kudos on tossing in Disney as well but anyone over the age of 10 probably isn't that interested in most of these titles. Pretty sure peacock list would gather more interest than Disney animation. Obviously I would like to see a peacock list, perhaps one day. I mean you have covered RUclips and tubi quite a lot in the past right? I think most viewers would consider peacock along similar paths as those. NBC definitely has name recognition and there is a large selection of movies. Fingers crossed. I'll keep watching either way, Hopefully you'll consider in the future though.
A great read is the Taran Wander series by Lloyd Alexander upon which the film the Black Cauldron was based. The series by Mr. Alexander was a five book chronology. Fabulous story of discovery of one’s self and of finding one’s place in an evolving world filled with both darkness and light. Taran learns who he is by learning who he is not. Great film but very far from the source material.
I love THE BLACK HOLE, especially when Anthony Perkins (famous by the movie Psycho) is met by the robot who does a counter-Psycho move on him, running through him with spinning blades. Talk about payback being a b****.
No Darby O'Gill and The Little People? An amazingly young Sean Connery and Janet Munro won a Golden Globe. ( I think for best new actress??) Come on...🧡🎬😜
Black Cauldron is my FAVORITE Disney movie!! I saw it with my highschool girlfriend when it came out in '85. (I'm 53 yrs old). I loved it and it scared the Hell out of her. Needless to say we're not together now HaHa. Now my kids 16 & 12 love it!!!

I don't know if it's on Disney + but if you enjoyed 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea or The Black Hole I would highly recommend Island At The Top Of The World.
Thanks again for the title + year in the upper right! 👌
Thank you I'm adding 3 movies to my must watch list.
Iron Will is a fave of mine, partly because it’s based on a true story.
I saw the Black Hole in theatres and watched it again recently. Highly underrated Sci fi flick.
Seeing that people aren’t saying they like g force makes me feel pretty good
I'll never support Disney streaming services until they give physical media equivalent attention. Disney also needs to ret-con their star wars debacle
Thank you to all the Flick Connection patrons. You guys are amazing but you didn’t need me to say it.
Hey DVD 😃
You remember when I told you I have too many streaming subs and it's partly your fault?
D+ is one of 'em, help me justify!
😎👍
41..... Lots of people died before ww2 so.
If you liked the Black Cauldron, seek out the trilogy of books that it is sourced. They are elementary school age, but still good books I remember reading when I was a kid. Lloyd Alexander is the author.
Still want to know where those reels in your background came from I love the way they look especially on the brick.
Good picks, flix-man!
Cheers
I appreciate your videos I noticed that you never actually said the title of Millions for people who are visually impaired might be an issue Love what you do keep up the good work
disney plus im least fav streaming service that i own, i need help finding things on there so this video was very helpful. Thank you and i enjoy this channel very much
I liked “Togo” on Disney+ !!!
LOL!!
I remember Home on the Range!
I watched your video and was excited about James and the Giant Peach, I love that movie and wanted to watch it with my 8 year old, however, when I searched for it on November 17 2020, it is not available on Disney+ in the US.
World War 2:1939-1945. Pre WW2?
Gosh you must have TVs installed inside your eyelids to get this much content lol
I took a pole and people weren’t very interested...
I have peacock what’s good?
Yes, another please. There is a new Holiday Collection on D+
+1 for Rescuers Down Under. -1 for lack of Shipwrecked
The Black Hole scared me so much as a kid I made my mom hide the tape in her closet.
Hey Darren, love your videos. Can you please do a video comedy films? It'll help deal with the Corona depression.
Looking over history watching this video again. I want to find some hidden Disney+ movies to watch.
Thanks for this. Just subbed to Disney+ this month. I got it for the kid in me😅
Hope you enjoy it!
@@DarrenVanDam thx🍻
The Black Hole was disney first PG rated movie.
Roald Dahl wrote a James Bond movie.
what's up with Ben Stiller and "fitness" roles...?
it seems to be a recurring thing.
He’s usually in crazy good shape and he really knows how to over play that role
Disney can't make a good Star Wars when they own Star Wars.
I love THE BLACK HOLE, especially when Anthony Perkins (famous by the movie Psycho) is met by the robot who does a counter-Psycho move on him, running through him with spinning blades. Talk about payback being a b****.
THANKS
I watched the apple dumpling gang and it's sequel the apple dumpling gang rides again Don Knots is at his best very funny
No Darby O'Gill and The Little People? An amazingly young Sean Connery and Janet Munro won a Golden Globe. ( I think for best new actress??) Come on...🧡🎬😜
Not this time 😂
@@DarrenVanDam 😂😂😂😂😂
No. Home on the Range needs to be forgotten. It was so bad that it killed 2D animation for Disney until 2009
