For those saying this isn't Liberty This is the beginning of it. Liberty is horsemanship without ropes. You can't achieve those amazing bows and rears and having them canter around with you in an open paddock in two seconds. It's a journey, you train the horse and yourself. And it has to start somewhere. And starting in an arena, away from other horses is good, the horse's focus can stay on you better, which can help when you take them out of the arena.
Hi Emma, thank you for your question! So in order to help teach your horse to be better about the whip off the line, here are some things you can do. First, use the whip to push them forward in a lunging circle, and while they are moving forward keep the whip moving in a small up and down rhythm (not to chase them with it but to make it look like it's just apart of your everyday body moving around). Then, after lunging immediately start using the whip to desensitize them and have them standing still. Once you can get your horse understanding how to go from sensitization to desensitization really well on the line first, then start off the line doing the same thing but start in a smaller area like a round pen so if the do get scared, they don't go far. I hope this helps!

I wanted to do some liberty work with my horse and I didn't see the full video, until I tried to put it in motion. Well, I took off her rains, no ropes, she follows me when I ask her to, but she stays behind me and I have to ask her to step up beside me, she will walk, but she won't trot. So I guess, I'll have to keep the halter and lead rope on until she gets the full basics, lol.
How do you start Liberty work? Lunging first? I have a horse that is not very well trained at all, no one has worked with him, he can follow some ques, like stop, back up, walk on, but he can be pushy, nippy and let's you know what he wants. Sometimes he respects your space but not always, this is the first thing I need to work on and perfect. He has rarely been ridden and not for well over 5 years and only for a short time.
Great Job! My horse is on light duty it's really nice to use this method to keep her interest. All around better relationship with my mare.. Your a good teacher.
Love watching these. ..gives me faith that I will regain my faith in horses. Neighbors horse got out and long story short I got hurt bad. Having a hard time regaining trust with my horse on the ground. hoping these exercises will help!

I took a kick to the ribcage having to catch a loose herd on a busy road and three months later had my ribs broken again from an 18hh warm blood spooking into me and shoving me througg a shed. I was naturally nervous after but you regain your confidence as time goes on. I had never been injured in the 20 years I've been riding but oh boy did those two back to back incidents spook my usually rock solid calm temperament.

This is stupid, he should have started with a totally green horse picked up from a large acreage ranch out West. This will show the new comer all the likely problems that he the new comer will likely face.

Hello! I have started riding at a new place and the first lesson, I immediately connected with a horse, called Samson. He's a five year old draft horse, and because we connect so well, I am eager to start horsemanship/liberty with him. Now my question is: is it possible for a draft horse to do liberty? I am pretty sure it is possible, but is there anything else I need to do different? I've been trying to research draft horses doing liberty all over the internet, but can't find anything so I was wondering if this has a reason. Thank you so much!

I already previously purchased a Dr. Cook Biteless Bridle and it seems to work similar to yours but you call yours a halter. My question is there any differences between the two and would there be any advantages to purchasing yours? Is yours for training and riding? If you haven't already it would be nice to have a show featuring your Biteless bridle and its advantages and uses. Thank you.
One thing with my horse, she's a fast learner, wants she gets it, I can't ask her more than 3 times to repeat it, she gets frustrated, lol... and says, it's enough lets move on mama....so I have to move onto the next step, but than I can go back and ask her to do the same thing just to make sure she remembers, and she's happy to do it as long as it's not continues. Oh boy, does she get's board easily, lol.

When it comes to asking for those slow gates, it's not about continually asking for a slow trot, it's about muscling the horse up that they can carry themselves. That slow of a trot is actually much harder for them to do than most think. (That's if it's done correctly). Work on muscling them up then start to ask them to lift themselves while speed decreases! I lost Midnite Star for a few minutes yesterday. He made a bee line for a mare who was in season. That doesn't usually happen. He will usually look at the mare for a moment but stay with me. No problem. I went over and had him back in almost no time. We worked near the mare because he does his best when he's showing off. He obviously wants to convince the mare that he's the most magnificent stallion on the planet.
One detail on the chinstrap. It can go tighter than his face would like. The size of the loop over his nose can be adjusted so that won't happen. It must be the right size, a perfect fit. We have the same loop system for our whippets. He can pull all he wants, but he cannot choke himself with the loop. Plus the big loop is broad, meaning the pressure is less per square centimeter. It is a risk free loop collar. If your bridle had the same, it would be even better.
It's winter so Midnite Star is being a annoying. He wants to go to work because he gets bored. Once I get him out he's happy and tries hard to please me.

I really enjoyed this video, Thank you! I used to compete in showmanship in hand. Some of the maneuvers you did were very similar to the maneuvers in shmnship. I wish that I had did the Nat horsemanship instead. More fun, natural and less pressuring the horse. What I mean by that is when you train for competition one tends to pressure their horse too much. I have a hard time yielding the rear... my horse backs up for some reason when putting pressure to move the back and not sure how to correct it correctly..?

I know that i'm late and all, but have you ever watched Pat Parelli? He has a great couple of segments about this. you can try showing him that your equipments and aiding tools doesn't only have one purpose. Try scratching him carefully with the whip, or halters or anything so that he doesn't see them as only objects you use for preassure. Slowly once he gets used to the whip you can try and wave it around him carefully to make sure he sees it as an extention of your arm, rather than a punishment. Hope you have a good day :)

Midnite Star has never been ridden with tack. Even his first ride was tackless using the cues he had already learned from the ground.

What if you horse is afraid of the wip off lead? Even if on lead he is calm?

Can not get my horse t stay in slow trot and go into slow canter. Is it my impatience ? Just stay persistent?

Laura Beth all horses have 1 good and 1 bad/less good side. Comparable with people being left or right handed. Keep working extra on that "bad" side.
