What an absolutely lovely mare, such a kind eye. The owner was fantastic, it’s so easy to accidentally transfer your anxiety to your horse. The owner did amazing. I’ve always got so much admiration for owners that, firstly ask for help and then secondly, allow it to be filmed, as it really helps people to understand the full process if they’re not sure. Such a beautiful mare, I love her. ❤🇩🇰
Yeah good point, there is a good chance that the owner was anxious about the loading and the horse picked up on that and decided that trailer must be dangerous cuz mom is so nervous!
Horses are group animals that know instinctively that the group needs an effective leader. So, they will test you from time to time to make sure you are still effective. If you're not, they will start taking over... subtley at first.

Yeah it's interesting how much in common horse training and dog training are. But the horses are so much bigger, you have to be much more skilled since you can just push them around.
@@OnceUponaTimeline I'm a dog trainer and horse owner and the similarities are huge.
You're right, horses are bigger but not only that they are prey animals not predators which makes a big difference. I would not teach a horse to come to the mounting block by playing tug with them when they do (which is a predator's game); instead I would let them find relief from pressure there.
Both are rewards according to the four quadrants of operant conditioning but they are different due to the nature of the animal.

That is one lovely animal. Willing to learn too!
She also needs to examine the way she pulls the trailer. You need to start and stop, slowly and smoothly. Make turns slowly and smoothly and lane changes smoothly. I had a horse that became balky about loading in the trailer, and I couldn't figure out why. Then one day the tire on the trailer blew. She must have felt the vibration of the tire and she didn't like it. A new tire, and her loading problem was solved.

Hier denkt man noch häufig, horsemanship bdeutet Grobheit und ausschließlich Drucknachlass, nachdem man angeblich nur straft und im besten Fall mit dieser Strafe wieder aussetzt.
Oder ich sehe immer noch Leute, die ständig neu Anlauf nehmen und riesige Kurven laufen, um die Rampe dann mit Schwung zu entern.
(Als ob ein Pferd Rollen an den Füßen hätte...) So lernt aber niemand je dazu.
This is wonderful! We sometimes forget that as we help and train animals we also have to help the owners understand and help their critters. I love this ❤

First of all…what a pretty headed mare. Absolutely gorgeous! Here’s my take…I didn’t see a problem with the horse. The owner has not taken a leadership role with her horse. Even when you were “the horse”, she was still very timid and afraid to use her tools. I’m not saying she’s a bad owner but this is an example of a horse looking for some confidence in the owner. This mare is a very willing follower but she isn’t comfortable with her leadership. Good demonstration…thank you.

This video was great. But there are few to no videos anywhere on YT of what to do with a horse that flies OUT of the trailer. Mine goes in fine, but halfway out when backing she just loses it and flies back. After one or two tries, she does it nicely, but every trip (even short ones) the first time out she panics. Last time she got injured tripping over herself off the ramp and landing on her front knees, and strained a suspensory ligament. Five months of stall rest, and now I'm dreading training her to get out of my new slant. I thought we could walk out forward, but she reverted to flying back again, this time no ramp. :(
I think I can use the 'pressure release' method on humans.

I know! Makes me wonder if a horse could actually benefit from a demonstration first...would they understand 2 humans acting out trailer loading prior to the horse doing it? This would be an interesting experiment with horses that have never loaded. Although with others, like this mare, they know darn well what we want, there's just reluctance to do it. So like cats!
@@melanies.6030 What I see with dogs is you have the mellow dog in front demonstrating and the other dog will often do a lot better once they see the first dog was calm and nothing bad happened. Me and a friend both owned nervous dogs but they were nervous about different things so we'd always put the calm one for that particular event in front and it made world's of difference. That probably helps with horses too but I also do wonder if the horse sees her controlling Ryan and maybe that will give her a bit more cache as being the boss in the horse's eyes when it sees Ryan obeying.

Something I believe is important to mention is how you address the owner's confidence and abilities. You always address the horses, owners and riders in every session. Everyone, including you Ryan, has a possitve experience which creates a stronger conection between horse and owner.

This video was so good because it was such a great example of the things we are doing wrong at home. We watch you do these exercises and you are an expert at rope handing and using the stick/whips and then it doesn’t always work out for me at home. Because I am awkward or mishandling! Seeing her drag the rope and be awkward was just such a great reminder to practice rope handling and maybe even video myself working to see the whole picture and where I may be giving confusing cues or improper handling of tools. Thanks so much Ryan- I am learning so much from your videos and it made me so happy to see her load her horse herself!

Awesome job Ryan, as always. Just curious as to why you don't correct people regarding holding their horse by the buckle and micro managing their head every second instead of letting them just stand and relax.
While the interview in the end of the Video I was constantly waiting for Ryan to mention her unawareness about her right arm. Pressure in her body and on the halter all the time.
But I guess it's just another topic and maybe got mentioned later on.

Great video! Would love to see a trailer loading video on a horse that panics when the bar goes across and backs out through it before it can shut and they can be locked in properly. I have a brumby (aussie mustang) and I think it comes from a fear of being trapped from being trapped in the wild. :(

It depends HOW YOU DRIVE . Give The horse a Nice experience and drive Carefully. Some feed and drive as You have a glass of water in the trailer. Try to ride in it yourself standing on hands and knees.
I think we all had more fun watching the Ryan horse load than the actual mare! 🤣

This was so great. I also have a hard time putting enough pressure to make a difference because I don’t want to be mean, but I forget there’s distance between being too easy on them and being mean to them. Great video, sweet owner and horse.

Some people confuse being nice with not being firm. You can be nice and firm at the same time. Firm doesn’t mean being mean. It just means clearly defining the instructions and boundaries so everyone’s on the same page.

Yeah it seemed like that horse was just a tad mischievous and needed a bit of stronger direction but was overall very sweet tempted. I also loved the dainty little steps it took backing down.

I really enjoy your videos and the information you provide! I have a 13 year old gelding from auction. Wonderful horse but does not like to load. Long story on getting him loaded to get home and only got him into trailer once since then. Been trying to get him loaded since Saturday. Trying many different things I've watched and learned. Even had a trainer yesterday come and he didn't load. The only thing we can think of is the trailer is to low for him. It's a trailer I'm borrowing.
What does he do when he refuses to load? I use several different techniques depending on the horse. How tall is your horse?
@Tracy Johnson He's 16 hands and the trailer is probably only about 6'5" inside height. He just seems to get really anxious. If he goes in at all he will immediately back out. Then he'll rear up kick just do anything to get back. Then repeat cycle all over again even with pressure applied outside and around the trailer to try and make him feel inside is more comfortable. Thanks for the reply.
@@DM-tf6mk my 16.2 hand mare fits in my stock trailer but her ears do touch if she raises head way up. Maybe try leaving door open and putting feed and hay in there so it's a good association. That's what I do with babies.
@Tracy Johnson That's what I now have been doing. I appreciate your input and advice. I feel he just may not have been trained properly, even though I have seen him in short video clips self load into similar stock trailers just by leading him up and then he walked in on his own.

Excellent training video and applied what you taught in this video with my 4 year old OTTB whom recently had a bad experience coming home from the vet after trying to load him to come back home the vet techs came to
Help and really didn’t help much at all but made the situation worse trying to load him with force rather that by the techniques you stated here. Practicing this at my farm under calm circumstances and the approach you stated my horse loaded within 20 minutes when I thought it was going to take quite some time after his last experience. Thank you so much and I am forever grateful!

I know a lot of horses can look a LOT alike but this mare looks just like my mare's half sister. I don't think it is, but they're so similar that I'm curious as to that mare's parents lol

My mare had not been loaded in 7 years, I got her to load just fine for the first time in 7 years. Friendship and leadership needs to be separated at specific times
