Sony we make the best camera in our smartphones, but for some reason it shoots worse than the Sony camera installed in smartphones from other companies. For example IPhone, Pixel, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi etc.
Exactly, I had a few thoughts on how to make it's camera experience better, but it didn't make the final cut of the video. Also the fingerprint scanner button didn't work well for some reason, I forgot to talk about it in the video too

i got both xperia 1vi and s24 ultra, and i can honestly say most youtubers are just underrating xperia always, and the results i got from my devices i can say xperia just blows s24u out of water in terms of color aCCURACY AND overall picture quality, there is also no freezing in my phone's camera app, stablization is a bit better plus wider dynamic range on s24u but overall the quality of video and photos you get from xperia is just on another level, samsung produces noisy photos in most casses while over sharpening photos. so i completely understand now you youtubers truly under rate xperia intentionally, i mean who can know better than me who is using both phones simultaneously from last 2 weeks, and the fact sony will get new updates as its new while samsung has gotten many updates yet still my xperia 1vi is out performing s24u in camera department, and also the fact xperia battery life is just wowwww. my advice to all people who watch these videos is just ignore these youtubers go experience buy the xperia 1vi yourself and you will be amazed by its results.
it's not related to this video but i have a xperia 5 iv, my phone update stuck version 64.1 but there aren't any update notification, do you happen to know why?
Your comment helps me a bit, as I'm currently unsure between the two devices, which will cost me the same price. And since the S24 Ultra has more attractive specifications on paper, it sometimes seems like a better option, especially due to the lower quality of the telephoto on the Sony. And as for the device itself, aside from the cameras, do you feel the same premium quality in the Xperia compared to the s24u?
You sound like a sales Rep to me buddy. Trying to push good hard working people into buying overpriced rubbish with ancient camera sensors and bad exposure issues and awful software integration?.
@@andersonthiagobarbosa5551 talking about cameras i personall prefer xperia photos their outstanding natural photos, samsung looks too much computerized and iam point and shoot type of person only use manual control sometimes, secondly both are premium but sony has special feel to it, it is lighter with much better battery life and it has shutter camera button which is coming on iphone 16 pro max too, it has variable optical zoom with more zoom range than samsung 5x and telephoto macro lens which is not available o any other phone. i would suggest you to go for samsung if you want to keep your phone for next 5 or 6 years as it has long software updates and you use spen otherwise go and buy xperia, an extra tip wait for 16 pro max as i will prefer it over both xperia and s24u, because it will be outperforming both of these in every category
The telephoto works better if you use it manually with fast shutter speeds, you get crisp photos, this camera requires a bit of photography knowledge it's not your basic point and shoot.
The Xperia camera may have some weak points But it certainly has the greatest strengths All lenses record video 4k 120 fps This is two years ago 😱 Also I'm surprised by the battery life It lasts for two days actually
The biggest issue I have with the s24 and other phones these days is that the pictures taken are way too computationally sharpened. To me the Sony optical pictures still look better because it’s what the camera actually picked up and less of a AI generated image of my picture
@fernandocalles1726 wireless sound quality will never beat cord. Btw, I used the first bluetooth earphone for music (jabra) in 2005, probably before you were born.
Kinda odd u never see a music artist with airpods in the studio, they have audio technica or Sony studio monitor headphones....which are less than 90 dollars.... listen to music like how it was meant to be listened to, not with some money grubbing airpods
When considering personal preferences, the Xperia stands out as my clear choice, primarily due to its impressive camera capabilities [i.e. I am talking about its pro camera function]. I am thoroughly pleased with the Xperia phone as it consistently delivers exceptional photo and video quality. It boasts numerous strengths that I find commendable, and I have nothing but praise for the phone.
I would've loved to see you take a motion shot from the S24U like you captured the pigeon with Xperia. Samsung would've been exposed due to the slower shutter and bad camera app
Any updates on the Xperia 1 VI in terms of improvements and fixes to the issues you pointed out? I'm interested to know how much things have changed for this particular phone in the 5 months since
I miss the SD card slot A LOT from when i upgraded to the S23 Ultra from an S9. Im not gonna fill up the 256 gigs of storage like, tomorrow, but i already filled it up halfway through in just 4 months of owning the phone. Having to even occasionally move several thousand photos from my phone to my PC is annoying. Not having a headphone jack has officially become a non-issue for me, although id still like to have one for those occasions where my earbuds are out of charge. Anyway, it seems that most of the issues Sony is having are software related, apart from the surprisingly underwhelming results from the telephoto lens. Ive seen better results in different videos but that might just be a good case of cherry-picked images, with a lot of misses before that. Hoping Sony addresses the software issues though. The phone costs top tier money and if i were an owner of such an expensive phone, id expect at least decent software improvement over time.
They are not software-issues related. The problem is that most RUclipsrs, including the one who uploaded this video, did not use the Xperia like the way it was intended to be.
I'm really sad, a case could have been made for the 1 V matching or surpassing the previous generation of flagships but the 1 VI seems to have gone in a different direction. Nice video as always
Xperia with his Pro Mode is for people who know how cameras work. You can get insane Pictures out of it. Samsung, Apple and co are for people wo don't want to learn how to make photos, but just get a "perfect" picture out of the box with one click :D and both options are just fine. Using the 14 Pro rn and can't wait to switch to the Xperia 1 VI
The Samsung needs to bring some features to become the best: 1. Selectable frame rate 24/25/30/48/50/60 etc 2. SD slot not paired with SIM card 3. LOG 4. 3.5mm Jack 5. deselectable program oversharp (now it is always on) 6. Decent API for third party camera software
why would samsung do that? as one of the comment said, samsung is better because all of the problem you listed. that overcontrast, oversharpened, and off-white balanced photo is what most people define as "better" and "beautiful".
Just got my Xperia 1 VI like an hour ago and already so happy lmao. Really great phone when it comes to base settings, ease of access for customization, can't wait to test the camera on my next hiking trip or once I get the underwater case. EDIT: Also, I'm not sure about fiddling with the camera settings yet (obviously). But it seems like a lot of the differences you pointed out are just effects that S24 already has and the Xperia does not. Perhaps with some adjustments to the camera app (which I believe Sony said is required? not 100% sure) you will get what you are looking for. After all, a photographer doesn't just go around snapping pics with the same settings everywhere. You have to adjust everything yourself. And the goal of the Xperia's camera was to recreate the capabilities of a professional camera for a smartphone. Could be copium, I'll find out over time.
I don't know man... Every professional photographer who has tried the sony xperia seems to love it more than any other phone currently in the market.. Sorry it didn't work out for you... Personally I find the camera on the sony by far the best among all the phones in the market due to its ability to click raw footage without any filters... although I don't like the price, you could get a dslr for the same price... All in all, this phone is not for tiktokers or instagrammers.. it's for a niche group of people who truly understands and loves photography.
I love how steven is finally getting the recognition he deserves, been a follower since the early days of this channel, im really glad for you, keep the good content coming
Finally someone said it. Though the Xperia isn't terrible, it's not the great either. But not really a surprising considering variable optical zoom vs optical+digital zoom. At least it now has great macro 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for the review. Decided to go for the Sony. The Ultra is disappointing for audio quality, wireless and external speakers, in comparison And the Sony has a 3.5mm headphone socket and SD card slot. Easy choice for me!
@@ジュン様-t5y Samsung audio and battery life is very poor compared to the Sony. With photography 90% I'd the photographer. Use the manual mode on the Sony and it does an excellent job. I sold my ultra and got the Sony.
00:50 Yes I would like to have an SD card place in my phone so much. At the same time, I am using an Type-A Type-C cable to transfer all my data between my phone and PC. Actully I start to use my 24 ultra as my daily usb stick. But I have to say, I am not a photographer as well. Still android is an better option because data transfering and choosing an spesific file from android is way better than iphone. In my opinion. But headphone jack... I missed that A LOT!!
Xperia phones have top-tier cameras, just not great for point-and-shoot. I bought the 1 VI as soon as it appeared, and I couldn't be happier. I'm experimenting daily and each photo shoot brings a new lesson. The learning curve is steeper than with Samsung or Huawei (I've owned a P20 Pro some time ago) but the results are worth the effort.
Nice review, with one exception: usage of a random SD card instead of internal memory, bringing additional garbage into the comparision with an internal storage only device. My 1V has the same over exposure issue(HDR) and also soft photos compared with S23U.
We have tested the older Xperia 5 ii, it seemed to freeze a lot, and charging speeds were slower and also the heat level while charging were high, let's hope Sony Fixed all these problem 8n their newer models.
Steven, great content as always ! Finally proper review of person working with photography and not paid by Sony ;) I was using both of those actually for 12 days and at the end decided to stay with s24 Ultra, but not only because of camera of course. There are still better "photo-phones" on the market but as a whole package, s24 Ultra in my opinion does not have competition.
This is why reviewers should wait a while after the phone releases before doing these comparison videos. The Xperia has had a few updates since and it works much better now. Gone are the stutters and the fingerprint sensor is crazy fast now.
It's a tricky situation. If you want what Sony has that other phones don't then you've got to swallow the compromise, and that's the zoom. If you only shoot 24 & 48mm, fine, if you don't then the Galaxy is a good camera option. As good as a Vivo? No, but the ecosystem is so much wider and support is deeper - what shop doesn't sell a Galaxy? - so it's horses for courses, but there's more to all phones than just their cameras and they should be judged on a full breadth of features.
I don't understand what should be wrong with the Xperias stabilisation..Its fine. The only thing that is weak is the stabilisation in the viewfinder. (also a Problems on iPhones)
8:58 - Hi Steven! I am an American who has lived in the United States my whole life, and I speak English fluently. I have never heard that analogy before, but it is a good one!
One thing Sony has better is the camera and camera app settings. It invests more in bringing alpha tools to its smartphones. Things that Samsung doesn't have. Samsung doesn't live just on Zoom, does it?🤔📱📷
Great review! Nice to see a review that isn't just being a fan-boy and claiming that everything is perfect. I have a 1 V and definitely the camera is wayyyyyyyyyyy behind Samsung and iPhone. Otherwise, it's a great phone but anyone trying to claim that the Xperia camera uses Sony Alpha technology and so therefore is on a par with Samsung / iPhone ... those guys are on drugs! So it's great to see a genuine and honest review that acknowledges the areas that need improving. Keep up the honest reviews 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! I had so many comments on my previous videos praising Xperia so I decided to give it a try and it definitely underdelivered, though I like the SD card slot option a lot. It’s nice to hear similar camera experience from another Xperia owner so I know I haven’t gone crazy because the buzz created around the phone played with my head for a little bit lol
I have the Xperia 1v and the iPhone 14 pro and I use them both for photography when I don't have my Canon and let me tell you the Xperia is much better if you prefer actual photography and not overly processed ai tainted shots. Same with video It's all about preference but my best shots have ALL come from my xperia.
@@danielmclaren170890agree. I have Xperia 1 V and iPhone 14 pro max too.. I can say that the main camera is much better on Xperia 1 V (no regrets). Both Xperia 1 VI and iPhone 15 pro max have the same main sensors from previous year
as xperia user, i agree that xperia photography much more for people who like to take time to maximize their photo quality, instead of quick snap for social media. so it all back to what people need, if your into a quick snap person then samsung is your deal, but if ur into some creativity and experimental person, then you should take xperia. TLDR xperia always had bad zoom quality since previous generation so yeah...
I don't know why many photographer RUclipsrs don't capture raw photos on (stock pro mode's not expert raw) S24 Ultra, because the S24 Ultra is very capable of shooting exceptional raw images. I've captured raw photos and compared them with JPEGs, and there's a huge difference. Only with raw images can the phone use its camera's full potential. And if anyone uses RAW, they often shoot with Expert RAW, and that app does produce processed RAW images that lack detail and don't look that good. The stock camera's RAWs are much better. I've tested it. P.S.: I know it's a long paragraph, but I thought this is something that should be addressed! 😅
If anybody wants an actual high-quality zoom purchase a pro camera. The reason why sony created the experia series is different from that of other makers. They created this for pros, like a sidekick which can do many things but not all of it. The fact that they have stuffed everything into a compact format is quite impressive. I agree stabilisation could have been better.
Yeah I went from Xperia 1 IV to Xiaomi 14 Ultra. I loved the form factor of Xperia but the camera was pretty bad. The sensor isn't great so needed a lot of light to make photos/videos that compete with iPhone/Xiaomi. The telephoto lens was not sharp and lost a lot of detail at max optical zoom. It also overheated like a mf which was super disappointing using it outdoors for more than a few mins... I actually bought Xiaomi 14U after watching your review primarily but also some others - so far I'm very happy with the phone. For anyone else who's curious, it works fine in US (Florida) on T-Mobile.
As a Sony user for years, the auto mode on the camera is crap indeed. However, manual mode turns this phone to a totally different beast (which you didn't mention at all). I have been using my Xperia 1 ii for 4 years and I still take better photos (in manual mode) than people with 23s and newer phones. I still enjoy taking photos manually but it is a personal preference after all, some people prefer AI to do all the things, which isn't wrong.
@@Ghuraify because the manual mode is such an extensive topic I have a separate video about POV photography with this phone where I cover the manual mode :)
i think sony should work on AI improvements and computational photography also sony need a lytia primary sensor 1 inch sensor and a 200 mm zoom range with sharp pictures and a better night photography image processing with better video capabilities.....nice work......👍
I do like the more realistic and not overprocessed look of the xperia. i had the s22 Ultra for a week but returned it because of the insane overprocessing and shitty HDR look. Same with the Pixel 7 :/ The Sony is definitely overpriced, make it 900 bucks and its perfect
Agree but I found workaround on Samsung is to always use Pro mode. It does have a stupid limitation in that mode that you can't switch lenses in video recording but otherwise much closer. One thing I didn't see mention here is the 2 stage shutter button. On Samsung you have to double press power, then use volume button to take a quick picture so not as good.
09:12 Remembering that the MotionCAM is the app responsible for filming in RAW on Android phones, and it does this with great competence! Samsung even got into trouble for making commercials saying they were recorded with its native camera app, but some takes shows MotionCAM UI.
it does not work well on my s24 U as I keep getting dropped frames and CPU throttle even with the paid app. so its very unreliable for clips longer than 15 seconds
@@StevenDivishWorks well with Xiaomi 14 Ultra. You need root for aperture mod for main sensor though otherwise you are stuck with half closed aperture.
i would choose sony, even with the sligtly worse camera, but the red flag for me is the only 3 years android update support, ohman common sony, i love sony but they have to do better here...
Hey steven gonna need a milkyway capturing on s23 ultra or s24 ultra. ALso i heard theres some issues on s24 ultra post processing astrophotography image. however good vid.
From the reviews I have seen the great problem with the device is the auto. It is very bad (especially in the MKBHD blind test) although, having manual settings is good sometimes you just need to be able to take ur phone out and take the best picture not worrying about other settings. Love your videos Steven❤ Definitely choosing the Samsung
On S24u the you cannot do macro in Pro mode, all my shots are blurred. Furthe the single lens design is horrible for cleaning. Between lenses and inside the metal ring. This is borderline ridiculous. Thinking of changing to Xperia.
S24 Ultra user here. Really cheering Sony on and hope they can produce a phone on par with Samsung. Especially on the software side of things and the OS updates.
Photos on the S24U are jsut like the crappy point and shoots from like 15y ago. I hardly see any advantage over my old Note 9 - I am mesmerized about the camera buzz people do, when still the micro contrast horrible. You can't enlarge any of those shitty pictures out these phones. Also the 3x and 5x on the S24u are a fing joke. Why the remove the 10x is beyond sanity. NO ONE needs a 3x side by side to an 5x. Thats just dumb and I am using it since 3 weeks.
I have been an ardent lover of ONLY SONY PHONES since years for its Camera, Sound and Display. So much so that since SONY XPERIA was not available in India .. I checked at Dubai and Bahrain with my cousins there ..and jt was still not available. I finally checked with my cousin New York ..and I got it from there in October 22. It is now having Pink, Green and White lines on the Display.. Stranded on what to do ..next.
The issue is not that its an optical zoom, its the sensor size! its too small, samsung put a better sensor, with a richer aperture and focal lenght. but, on the main sensor, my money is with the sony!
I just sold my Samsung S23+. Cameras were NOT good. I take many photos, and the pictures with the S23 are too dark and the 50 MP camera also gives too much color, and has a contrast problem/like a thin greyish layer. AND often has no clear focal point. When you zoom in om leaves/pine needles on trees, none are sharp. And the wifi had huge compatibility issues with my router, but not my old laptop or my cheaper phone. ALSO the Samsung customer support is terrible in it's setup. Made to make customers give up. Samsung's product specialist looked at my photos and confirmed that the camera really IS that bad; it's supposed to be like that. Never pay for a Samsung again.
i got the sony because i got an amazing prize for it (about 700 euros and those wmx500 headphones for free ). I come from the xiaomi t series and wanted something different. I am not a camera guy and make a photo maybe once or twice a month. But I think that the sony is really nice for people who dont need it as camera. The Battery is just awsome, i like the display without notch or camera hole and love going back to the headphone jack and sd card. All those cameras are more of a prototype to be fair and you can see and feel that when you use it.
I'm currently using Xpreria 1II and biggest issue with it has always been the random camera functionality. 7/10 times when I try to take a phone, it stutters and does not respond nor take the shot. I'm camera enthusiast, but my main use of my phone is to document stuff. Like take a picture of screw packet in hardware store or take picture where I parked my car etc. I also need to take a picture of small stuff at work (electronic components) where 1II is useless. It's super frustrating not being able to quickly record something without trying, closing camera app, reopening the app trying again.... I was going to buy the VI, since it fixed lot of overheating, flashlight, aspectratio issues I have with 1II. BUT seeing your review and knowing it stutters, I will probably go with S24U. I do not care about if Sony's cameras are not as good as in S24U, that Sony macro looked great for my work, BUT I am not ever going to buy and phone that lags in camera apps ever again. Period. Loved my Note 8, so maybe it's Samsung time again.
We have these two smartphones, Xperia 1VI and S24U. The S24U is only exceptional in its zoom, the rest is like 90% of smartphones on the market, oh yes there is the stylus but rarely used, we quickly forget it. Unlike the Xperia which stands out from all other smartphones with the SD slot, the jack, dynamic vibration, very effective macro, a real optical zoom, stock Android...etc. I do not judge the photo, because tastes and colors are to each, for example there are some who like HDR others not.
Why are nearly all Xperia camera reviews and comparisons so bad? It is a MANUAL camera. If you just use the basic mode or portrait mode and if you are not using RAW, you don't have to wonder about what you get. It is not a point and shoot camera. And the phone is only for people who understand that. So It is not the best option for 99% of the people. It is for manual control, shooting in RAW and edit in post. again, MANUAL CAMERA And if you have a SD card with a high video class, you also can save videos to the sd card. The issues you had with the freezing app must be a software problem of the app itself. the Xperia 1V has 3 apps and they work just fine. Sony is still developing this all in one camera app. I don't like it, that's why I stick with my Xperia 1V for now. But I extracted the apps so I can install them on future Sony phones. I donowant to miss cinema pro
Hi nice video, thanks! I don't have experience with the Sony phone, but when you mention that video is better on the sony, is that when you compare pro video or regular video mode?. Also, my current gimbal (insta360 pro) can't support the added weight the attached (freewell) anamorphic lens. Is the gimbal you recommended strong enough for additional lenses, or would you recommend another gimbal for that? Thanks (:
From what I understood the cinema pro was removed on the VI and would be added at a later date as they now have a single app. In that sense the 1 V is better at the moment.

But if you use the photo pro in sony you can produce a photo quality that the iphone and samsung can't.

i got both xperia 1vi and s24 ultra, and i can honestly say most youtubers are just underrating xperia always, and the results i got from my devices i can say xperia just blows s24u out of water in terms of color aCCURACY AND overall picture quality, there is also no freezing in my phone's camera app, stablization is a bit better plus wider dynamic range on s24u but overall the quality of video and photos you get from xperia is just on another level, samsung produces noisy photos in most casses while over sharpening photos. so i completely understand now you youtubers truly under rate xperia intentionally, i mean who can know better than me who is using both phones simultaneously from last 2 weeks, and the fact sony will get new updates as its new while samsung has gotten many updates yet still my xperia 1vi is out performing s24u in camera department, and also the fact xperia battery life is just wowwww. my advice to all people who watch these videos is just ignore these youtubers go experience buy the xperia 1vi yourself and you will be amazed by its results.
it's not related to this video but i have a xperia 5 iv, my phone update stuck version 64.1 but there aren't any update notification, do you happen to know why?
Your comment helps me a bit, as I'm currently unsure between the two devices, which will cost me the same price. And since the S24 Ultra has more attractive specifications on paper, it sometimes seems like a better option, especially due to the lower quality of the telephoto on the Sony. And as for the device itself, aside from the cameras, do you feel the same premium quality in the Xperia compared to the s24u?
You sound like a sales Rep to me buddy. Trying to push good hard working people into buying overpriced rubbish with ancient camera sensors and bad exposure issues and awful software integration?.

It lasts for two days actually
Sony is great esp for raw video and photo. Most realistic output.
The biggest issue I have with the s24 and other phones these days is that the pictures taken are way too computationally sharpened. To me the Sony optical pictures still look better because it’s what the camera actually picked up and less of a AI generated image of my picture
3.5mm audio jack. Sony won. period.
Lol, what? Are you living in the Stone Age? 😂

The Samsung needs to bring some features to become the best:
1. Selectable frame rate 24/25/30/48/50/60 etc
2. SD slot not paired with SIM card
3. LOG
4. 3.5mm Jack
5. deselectable program oversharp (now it is always on)

(also a Problems on iPhones)
i wish Sony had given 7 years of software upgrades (3+4) like rest of the OEMs. 😢

Steven can you make a cinematic video comparing S24, iPhone pro, pixel and the sony xperia...
For anyone else who's curious, it works fine in US (Florida) on T-Mobile.
how is the OS? i was gonna get a xiaomi, but i was a bit worried about the quality of the software. some people say bad things about it

The Xperia camera takes a bit more used to. I'm upgrading my 1iii to 1iv soonish, not even considering Samsung phone.

On S24u the you cannot do macro in Pro mode, all my shots are blurred. Furthe the single lens design is horrible for cleaning. Between lenses and inside the metal ring. This is borderline ridiculous. Thinking of changing to Xperia.
9:50 1 V also does this, it needs an hdmi cable and a capture card adapter for those features to work.
S24 Ultra user here. Really cheering Sony on and hope they can produce a phone on par with Samsung. Especially on the software side of things and the OS updates.
I love my xperia 1 V not sure why all the negative comments fork factor and build wuality and battery works in sync and love the camea
I also have a Sony 1V great phone I have no trouble taking any kind of photo, or movie.
For a propper use of the camera of the xperia I highly recommend to watch a video from a pro photographer, they use the camera so mucho better

The issue is not that its an optical zoom, its the sensor size! its too small, samsung put a better sensor, with a richer aperture and focal lenght. but, on the main sensor, my money is with the sony!
What ever anyone says for me any time go for Sony Xperia... 😂
3:55 try using ND Filter, Samsung is good because its software supports Digital filter with HDR
You have the latest update?
I'll take raw photography over AI assisted zoom rendering any day
Samsung also has a burst shot mode- simply swipe the shutter button and hold :)
Never Sony again regarding their update plan. Considering the price you will receive not enough android updates in the future.
Sony Xperia fan since 2008
make a video about raw photo of the both phones and show some before and after edited raw photos
It is for manual control, shooting in RAW and edit in post. again, MANUAL CAMERA
And if you have a SD card with a high video class, you also can save videos to the sd card.
S24 Ultra is a phone, the Sony is a camera.
both are phones, but this video was indeed shot with a sony camera, but full frame one :)

Because I just posted new video
I appreciate that sony is keeping 3.5 Headphone Jack.... I don't know why people have problem with it...
3.5mm jack and memory card is awesome I agree
The Sony has the best battery.
And that is more important then taking a picture.
And it's a phone for manual photo's.
This is comparing apples with oranges.
And this review is only about the auto mode 😊
I covered the battery life here and even made a special video on Manual mode, cmon
The Sony is for people that want flexibility with their camera and want to feel they're actually doing something themselves
Sony Xperia us Symbol of Quality..from Sony Ericsson Walkman & Cyber shot series
