  • Dr Dan, in his vocal analysis video, delves into a comprehensive review of Marcelito Pomoy's rendition of 'The Prayer'. Highlighting Marcelito's impressive talent, he discusses how the Filipino singer skilfully transitions between soprano and tenor-baritone ranges, a dexterity achieved by fast breath intakes and narrowed vocal tract control. However, Dr Dan notes that Marcelito's performance feels disconnected, lacking an emotional connection with the song's narrative.
    Furthermore, he identifies a sacrifice in tonal shaping and phrase-cutting as Marcelito constantly switches between the two vocal registers. Nevertheless, Dr Dan expresses his admiration for Marcelito's rich tenor voice and encourages more use of it in his performances.

    ⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

    Hi Dan you must take into consideration Marcelito pomoy speaks Tagalog, not English or Italian so He is not only switching between Tinner and Saprono but Two different languages plus He is sitting Down and Doing This live on a Radio Station. Try singing a song in two different languages that you don't even Speak, very Difficult in it's Self now consider the Octive ranges and how quickly you must Change from one to the other. Now take into consideration he is self thought and had absolutely no Training. This Man is Amazing and in this song has so many multiple things happening in a split second it would be Had To Show a lot of Passion. JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT 😁

      Thank you so much for your comment and insights into Marcelito Pomoy's extraordinary talent. I wholeheartedly agree that his ability to switch not only between vocal ranges but also different languages, all while performing live and sitting down, is an astounding feat.
      I want to assure you that I'm fully aware of Marcelito's native language of Tagalog, and I recognise the immense complexity and challenge he faces in singing in a multilingual mode. Your points about the octave ranges, quick changes, and his self-taught abilities add valuable layers to the understanding of his performance.
      Your passion for Marcelito's talent shines through, and I appreciate your thoughtful considerations. I always strive to approach my analyses with an open mind and an understanding of the unique elements that each artist brings to their performance. Marcelito is indeed amazing, and your insights will certainly inform my thoughts going forward.
      Thank you once again for sharing your perspective! 😁

  • @moon3817
    @moon3817 11 месяцев назад +8

    You should hear the version where Marcelito recorded the female and male parts separately and combined them. You can easily find that version on youtube. Also, the song was created as a duet between a man and a woman, so of course there are some sacrifices to be made when it is sung by just one man. So, I understand the feeling of pointing out that point, but more than that, I think it should be appreciated that this duet song was sung well by only one man.

    Be careful, we will all turn on you!!!!!!!!! Marcelito’s fans are crazy about him and don’t like anyone criticizing him. (Just joking). We love him, not just for his wonderful voice, but for the person who he has become after enduring such a very difficult childhood. He has worked so hard to get where he is and he gives back to the poor and children with his charities. He is not perfect, but that’s what we love about him. He is so natural and makes boo boos once in a while, but makes fun of it. You have you right to your opinion. Enjoyed your feedback.❤️🇨🇦

  • @thomasberwick3082

    Dr. Dan, Marcelito takes this song to yet another level in the release of his album, "Duet Yourself". Since it is a tracked recording, he includes all of the harmonies where Bocelli and Dion sing together in harmony. It is quite beautiful with Marcelito singing the lead (Bocelli) in tenor/baritone and the alto harmony (Dion) in countertenor. This song also includes a marvelous background orchestra. Here is the link to the audio: ruclips.net/video/ULwa6eLtufY/видео.html
    Here is a partial list of other covers by Marcelito:
    Celine Dion's "The Power of Love" (His best female imitation in my opinion)
    Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"
    Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", "I Have Nothing", "One Moment in Time"
    Loren Allread's "Never Enough"
    Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"
    Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson's "Beauty and the Beast"
    Kenny Loggins "Forever"
    Mariah Carey's "Hero" and "Oh Holy Night"
    Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love"
    Beyonce's "Listen"
    Steelheart's "She's Gone"
    Ed Sheeran's "Perfect"
    Miley Cyrus' "When I Look At You"
    Luther Vandross "Dance With My Father"
    Diana Ross/Lionel Richie's "Endless Love"
    Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli's "Time To Say Goodbye" (He sings in Italian)
    Teresa Teng "The Moon Represents My Heart" (He sings in Chinese)
    IL Divo/ Celine Dion's "I Believe In You" (He sings in French and imitates 4 different voices)
    Luis Fonsi's "Despacito" (He sings in Spanish)
    Finally, Marcelito sings numerous Filipino songs in his native language, Tagalog.

    I believe marcelito has no formal training in music but having such raw talent is already something. In music, when singers do sing it's not all about tone quality but also how singers communicate the emotion they are singing.

    You also have to realize that at the time he sang this, he could hardly speak English, so he probably doesn’t “feel” the song like English people would. I think when he performs on stage, he shows more emotion with the song. I still think that this is a magnificent performance and that he has a beautiful voice.

    These vocal coaches are all over the place. One likes his low voice, one likes high voice. A little pitchy, too much breath, not enough breath. I listened to it and I thought it was the best live performance of a song I've ever heard. Gave me goosebumps, tears and touched my heart. And the people agree with me. There are countless of reactions of this with people stunned, getting goosebumps and flat out crying. One did a prayer after the reaction. If this song didn't move you, nothing will. And he claimed that Marcelito is doing a party trick. Please find me someone else that can do this. The thing that this reaction proved is that this vocal coach is out of touch with the people.

      Thank you for sharing your passionate thoughts about Marcelito's performance. I can truly sense your admiration for his unique ability to sing in two different languages, voices, and ranges, all while conveying a heartfelt connection to the music. Many people, like yourself, find his talent both amazing and inspiring.
      I want to clarify that my analysis was focused on specific aspects of the performance, including technique and emotional connection. While I recognise and appreciate Marcelito's incredible skills, I still maintain my reflection that, from my perspective, the performance may have lacked a certain emotional connection. This viewpoint does not diminish Marcelito's talent, and I understand that others may have a different emotional response.
      As for the challenge to sing better than him, I want to emphasize that my role as an analyst is not to compare or compete but to provide insights into vocal performances. My enjoyment or personal abilities as a singer do not influence my professional analysis.
      Your engagement with this subject is highly appreciated, and your perspective adds richness to the ongoing dialogue about music and performance. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

      I understand where you're coming from, but I would like to emphasise that one doesn't necessarily have to replicate a performance to provide a quality critique. Analysing and evaluating a performance requires an understanding of various elements such as vocal quality, breath management, and emotional connection, not necessarily the ability to imitate the artist. While I appreciate the talents of Marcelito, my insights stem from my knowledge of vocal techniques and performance dynamics rather than a direct comparison with him.❤

    so... i tihnk you're analysis is interesting. It's the first time I heard that criticism about "connection" with him and I've watched a LOT of people react to this performance. Many coaches and singers as well. I understand your point of view. I'm not sure I agree with it. I recently listened to a baritone singer reactor who actually seemed to prefer the upper register tone. So, it just shows how subjective these reactions are. I do love Marcelito's lower register but this baritone singer didn't seem that impressed.

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for acknowledging the effort that goes into the analysis. Unlike typical reaction videos, my aim is to provide a detailed, educational breakdown of the performance, covering aspects like vocal technique and breath management.
      You're absolutely correct that reactions and analyses can be highly subjective, especially when it comes to emotional connection and personal preference in vocal tone. Different people, including trained vocalists and coaches, will have varying opinions. The goal of my analysis isn't to present a definitive view but to offer a perspective based on my own training and expertise.
      It's always interesting to hear how different people, like the baritone singer you mentioned, respond to the same performance. These differing opinions can provide a fuller understanding of a singer's capabilities and the impact of their performance. Thank you for sharing your perspective; it enriches the conversation.

      @DrDanRobinson  10 месяцев назад +1

      I understand that the performance in question elicited strong emotional responses from many people, and I respect that. Emotional impact is subjective and can vary from person to person. My critique, however, is based on technical aspects of vocal performance, breath management, and interpretation, which are informed by my expertise as a singing teacher.
      It's important to clarify that I don't need to personally execute the performance to provide a professional critique. Much like a football coach doesn't need to play at a professional level to understand and teach the game's nuances, my role is to offer insights that could help singers improve their technique and delivery.
      So while I respect your view and the emotional impact the performance had on you, my critique aims to offer a perspective based on technical proficiency and interpretive choices.

      I appreciate your curiosity about my ability to perform a duet in the manner you've described. However, it's essential to recognise that my critique of Marcelito's performance, including his emotional connection to the piece, doesn't necessarily require me to replicate it. My observations and comments stem from my understanding of various elements such as vocal quality, breath management, and the use of vocal folds. Analyzing and appreciating an artist's talent, including their emotional connection to a piece, is a different skill set from emulating it, and both can be valuable in their own right. This focus on both technical and emotional aspects allows for a well-rounded and insightful evaluation.

    With all of respect sir....Pls try to do what marcelito did then pls tell us how it feels like... Then pls judge your performance after you listen your own craft.... Coz i think you're judgement toward his performance was like u want to hear a perfect duet in one person and i think its imposible ...
    He is still a human being needs to break some parts inorder to switch into another register... U know that coz u r a vocal coach ..... Just saying...

      I appreciate your perspective, and I understand where you're coming from. However, it's important to note that as a vocal coach, my role is to provide professional critique based on my understanding of vocal technique, breath management, and performance. I don't need to replicate a singer's exact performance to offer valuable insights.
      Critiquing doesn't necessarily mean I'm seeking perfection, nor do I expect a human to be able to perform like a machine. Transitions between registers, especially when attempting something as complex as a duet performance by a single individual, are undoubtedly challenging. My aim is to provide constructive feedback that could help singers better their craft, regardless of whether or not I can personally perform the technique being discussed.

    I think you have never heard of the technique of doble kara or dual voice? You are very unknowledgeable in this area and I believe that is head voice not falsetto at all and it is definitely not a "party trick". Do you use that derogatory language in all of your analyses?
    Of course this is his signature song which he has been singing since 2011.
    Perhaps the next time he tours Australia you can explain to him that he has been doing a "party trick" all this time.

      Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and engage with my analysis. I understand that my perspective may differ from yours, and I appreciate hearing from those who are passionate about these subjects.
      While I acknowledge your references to the technique of "doble kara" or dual voice, I must admit that in my research and experience, including consulting various academic texts such as the Dictionary for the Modern Singer by Matthew Hoch, I have not found substantial information on this specific technique. It's possible that it goes by a different name or terminology in other academic circles, and I would welcome any sources or insights you may have on the subject.
      Regarding the terms I used in my review, please know that it was never my intention to be derogatory or dismissive of the artist's talents. I approach my analyses from an educational standpoint, and the terminology used was meant to describe certain vocal techniques. If my choice of words seemed inappropriate, I appreciate your feedback, and I will reflect on it in my future work.
      Marcelito Pomoy's talent is indeed remarkable, and I have great respect for his abilities and his signature song. I look forward to continuing to learn from others and to strive for a balanced and informed analysis.
      Thank you again for sharing your views, and please feel free to reach out with any further thoughts or references.

    You always cut the song that’s why you can’t appreciate the connection to you

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  10 месяцев назад

      I understand that the editing style of cutting the song may appear to disrupt the flow of the performance. However, the nature of a reaction video, especially from a teaching standpoint, is to intersperse the performance with commentary and critique. This allows me to break down the technical aspects, such as vocal technique and breath management, in real-time.
      The goal isn't to diminish the emotional impact or connection of the song but to provide educational insights. It's a different experience from simply watching a performance start to finish, designed to offer viewers a deeper understanding of what's happening vocally and artistically. So while the emotional connection may not seem as immediate in the format of a reaction video, the intent is to add an educational layer to the viewing experience.

      @DrDanRobinson  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video. I understand that different reactors have their own styles and ways of approaching their analyses, and I value your feedback.
      However, I'd like to highlight that my approach to reaction and analysis videos has a specific educational focus. I strive to offer insights that might not be covered in typical reaction videos, including aspects of vocal technique, breath management, and linguistic nuances.
      I recognise that this approach might be different from what you're used to seeing, but I hope it provides a unique perspective that contributes to a deeper understanding of the performance. If you have any further thoughts or suggestions, I'm always open to hearing them. Thank you again for your engagement!

    Anthony Callea's rendition of this song that was mentioned by this coach and a couple of others here is a slow pretentious version. Not close to the emotional and beautiful performance of Marcelito. Marcelito wins this one. Who's next?

    Please don't get angry, but your analysis is worthless! It lacks basic elements such as a language-based starting point and all the problems that need to be solved. Marcelito Pomoy is not English and certainly not Italian, but Tagalog is unlike any other language. The same goes for mentality and thought! Grammar has also been ignored by you. I won't go into the elements of vocal technique, although that might be interesting too! I suggest you to analyze English speakers singers, because it's real for you!

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  11 месяцев назад

      Certainly, I understand your concerns and appreciate your input. It's clear that analysing a singer like Marcelito Pomoy, who performs in a multilingual mode, presents unique challenges that can't be reduced to a single language or cultural context.
      I want to assure you that I'm fully aware of Marcelito's native language of Tagalog, and I recognise the complexities involved in his performances. I also value the importance of considering aspects like vocal technique and breath management, and I appreciate your suggestion to focus on English-speaking singers.
      Your feedback is essential for a comprehensive and nuanced analysis, and I will take it into consideration as I continue to study and evaluate performances. If you have any more insights or thoughts, please don't hesitate to share them. Thank you for taking the time to express your views.

    …. absolutely agree with the lack of connection. Valuable observation Dr. Dan. There’s a definite “wow” factor but, it comes at the cost of what I interpret as genuine emotional engagement. It’s good to be aware and decide as a singer if the trade off is worth it.

    Hmm, I'm not a fan of Marcelito like some of the replies here nor I'm a Filipino, so I'm as neutral as it gets... frankly speaking I respected the critique portion done by you, Mr. Dan until... you just dismissed the beautiful skill to transition between registers while sitting down even between languages with different phonetic sounds as just a 'Party Trick' . I mean I don't know what's the difference in perspective b/w your analysis and the hundreds of other Vocal coach or teachers, who didn't find it so.

    This guy is an impressionist. The focus is the vocal gymnastics. It's not the theatrics and feels and connection with the lyrics . He's not trying to move you. When he is impersonating Andrea, that isn't his "real" voice either. If you want to be moved, listen to Morissette Amon or Gigi De Lana or Lea Salonga.

  • @singingmanmd
    @singingmanmd 10 месяцев назад

    Dr. Dan you are correct. The technique and skill is good, but there is a disconnect with no real value, emotion, and feeling to it. It is more like "see how I can do both parts", but there is nothing else. That would have been 🔥 if it was a real duet with him doing either part, but preferably the baritone part (Must say though he is great in both h his low and upper register!!) Both parts come in too soon for one person to do both parts. It loses the real meaning and emotion when he does it by himself. A duet with better timing this guy would kill it for sure!! Every duet can not be performed that way. Some can, but this is not one of them.
