- Leonard Whiting sings the title song from "Romeo and Juliet" call "What is a Youth".
He sings to the arrangement by George Peter Tingley they made this
"Original vocal, piano, string quartet arrangement was recorded with one microphone in a women's dorm at Mills College in Oakland in 1979"
I added the "Romeo & Juliet" posters I found and a couple extra images of Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey.
By far the most talented and beautiful couple that ever hit the movie screen.
The best 2 actors , the best version of Romeo and Juliet. Both Leonard n Olivia embodied the characters truly. Totally believable.
Excellent observation, I think!
I now believe that Olivia Hussey is inverted. Science states that she has the skeleton of a genetic male. Very sad, feeling pretty fooled here. But true !!
Whoever is responsible for casting these two should be rewarded a separate Oscar. What a perfect choice.
Zeffirelli made the choice of the two lovers through a very arduous process lasting months from hundreds of aspirants.
Could you have seen John Moulder Brown and Lynne Frederick playing Romeo and Juliet a few years later in the early 70s?
Yes, that would be Franco Zeffirelli 🤗
CONCORDO,,,PLENAMENTE...PURO AMOR ......E ANGELICAL......TODA VEZ VEJO FILME ,,,EU CHORO.....ESCONDIDO,,,SEM NINGUÉM SABER,,,,,
❤❤❤❤❤
It is hard to believe that Leonard Whiting's vocal ability is as strong as his acting prowess ... which is in itself amazing. What a total talent this man is ...
Una inolvidable película!!♥️
We shouldn't be surprised he was already a seasoned performer in London's West End as the Artful Dodger in Oliver and toured with Laurence Oliver as far as Russia, before Zeffirelli signed him as Romeo. If you want to go back even further, he came second in a talent contest for his singing in his early teens. He had talent and parents who allowed him to run with it.
That he did not become a superstar is beyond me.
I love his voice. It's so beautiful, melodic and calming.
Arya C He was beautiful.
Zeffirelli created a timeless masterpiece. There is an essence of innocence here that is incredibly intoxicating. Loved this and its has remained a classic never to be surpassed.
Wow, he sings it better than the original movie soundtrack.
too bad this was more than a decade after the film was recorded. Ms. Hussey in a recient (-2y) interview said she thought his voice was better than the one used in the movie.
I have a dude. If he would be the singer, who would be Romeo? Because the singer and Romeo are in the same scene. It would be hard that Leonard Whiting played both
A beautiful man with a beautiful voice! I watched this filming in Italy when I was 11. My cousin was one of the photographers filming!
Did you meet the main stars? They seem like nice people.
@@emilymalden3310 wow. Just saw this! Yes, I met both of them then, and would hang out watching the filming. I met Leonard 10 years later in London, them again 2 years ago, he and Olivia, and it was so cool to meet them again after all this time. We've been in touch since.
@@418SurferGirl That's really cool.
Leonard is so beautiful and Olivia Hussey is in absolute the most beautiful actress in the world ❤❤❤
It makes me cry to think of the years gone by when Leonard, Olivia - and I - were young and the present moment was all that mattered, all that there was.
greatest love film of all time...an absolute classic that makes all other versions look like poppycock..
He is such an important soul !! He and Olivia have such astonishing innocence and staggering beauty. This is one of the most perfect films of all times. I saw it a million times as a teen and it's an honor that they still grace the planet....
I didn't know Leonard Whiting could sing! Gorgeous voice as he is.
I didn't, either! I am blown away.
Oh wow, I was in San Francisco in 1979! He was in the Bay Area? He has a beautiful voice to match his face!
I read he became a professor. I was a baby then. He is 72 now.
Wow! How can someone with such a spectacularly beautiful face also have such a lovely voice? Leonard Whiting is one of the most perfectly gorgeous actors ever to grace the stage or screen....and he can SING so well, too. And act. What an extraordinary package.
I saw this when i was ten i immediately had a crush on him
God given talent. Great Looks & a spectacular voice. God bless! 🙏

Lucky Leonard ! Multitalent and grace... ❤️
I could listen to this forever
themistressladyg magnificent!
I was a little girl in the 70's, when I first heard about R&J. This haunting song has always enchanted me.
I recently watched the 50th anniversary footage of the main stars speaking, and Leonard mentioned going to Franco or Nino's home to practice the song. I missed out him stating he turned down the offer to sing the title song . Maybe it would have been to stressful combined with the acting. The other singer we good as well. I am sure the cast and crew, whomever is still living are honored the film has stood the test of time. I was 1 when it came out. I think it is best production as well. In addition, Leonard and Oli is are still best buds. He turned 70 this year. Her memoir is really good as well.
The most beautiful couple that graced the screens.
Omg!!! Handsome sweet Leonard, (Romeo) is a fantastic singer as well as a magnificent actor! They should have definitely used his voice in the film! ❤️😘🎤🎼
He mentioned 50 years later, it would have been cheesy. I know he is honored his version of the play is beloved by a new generation.
I love this song, and I love Leonard Whiting who's handsome and has beautiful voice.
I saw this film, just amazing.!!!***!!!
It is fitting that Leonard should sing this song “What Is A Youth” many years later, a song about the impermanence of youth and beauty.
I had no idea he had such a beautiful voice, no wonder he was in Oliver in London playing Artful Dodger
Drop dead gorgeous Leonard Whiting - what a coup for Zeffirelli to cast him as the best looking Romeo ever, and he can sing! However, he could not have sung this in the film as it was needed as the backdrop to him wooing Juliet. He was in Oliver on stage - twice so he has always been able to sing. High irony here, as it was the film version of Oliver that robbed Romeo and Juliet of the Oscar for best film in 1969. I was incandescent at the time as I felt that Zeffirelli's masterpiece should have bagged the lot .
Rosalind Mercer Wow. Sometimes that's the way the tables turn.
And in the film it was beautifully sung by Bruno Fillipini. Leonard has a sweet voice and know how to give a stunning rendition of any song.
@@deisepalmieri6377 Fillipini was dubbed by Glen Weston, according to the soundtrack album. I don't know if there's a Fillipini version in existence.
They could easily have dubbed Leonard Whiting singing the song....I think he said he wanted to concentrate on his acting performance and not take away the song from the other dubbed singer..... it would have been awesome if he sang the song as he had the voice of an Angel, as well as the looks OMG❤️🥰👼🏻
It is a sick joke now that Oliver beat R+J for Best Pic.
Forever young!!! Forever immortal Leonard and Olivia/Romeo and Juliet!!!!
What a gorgeous young guy he was, should have been a superstar.
Leonard Whiting was stunningly beautiful as a seventeen year old adolescent; however, his boyish beauty faded as he matured and his adult facial features never matched how he looked as "Romeo." He was cast at exactly the right time to capture his adolescent beauty! It is interesting how different individuals' physical beauty "peak" and "fade"
at different stages........not always correlated with age. Oh, he sings beautifully!
Absolutely! mnl, Phiippines
@@kurtsupreme
True but not relevant for men : to be successful and sexy , they don't have to look exceptionally good or even good . Age , beauty are less / not much of a problem for male actors , very much unlike actresses ...who MUST stay forever young and beautiful !!...
And thus , the reason why Leonard didn't become a mega star is because he chose theater and gave up his film career , and not because of a "fading beauty" etc ...
Our beauty (if we have one 😁) will always peak and fade. For what is a youth... 🎵 🎶
@@ennediend2865 That may be true; however, his adult looks did not match the promise of his adolescent beauty. There are probably many reasons why he did not become a "mega star." I was just suggesting ONE possibility. Certainly, his "looks" were just as important as Olivia's when he was selected to play Romeo...........it can be ALL about their looks.........male AND female........particularly in the film business, not as much on the stage.
@@kurtsupreme You're right, I think. Anyone who's that beautiful has only to lose some of it. He was never an "ugly" fellow, for sure, even in later years.
I feel sad also, it makes me go back k to my 13 year old soul. I will never forget how I loved this movie
Yeah, I know right!
I watch this film and I'm 14 and floating on Romance again.❤️😺
Dear Leonard! You are the best Romeo, the best singer of this song that I'be ever heard..BRAVO!!!
Oh my....I saw this movie when it first came out and cried my heart out at the death scenes. He was absolutely wonderful in playing Romeo. I loved the movie as well as the soundtrack. Simply a lovely movie played by two great actors.
omg i am in tears how lucky i am to discover this ! I shall never stop listening to this masterpiece
I felt the same way as the interviewer! This movie
changed my life!
What a Voice ..... Heart throb through and through......
Capolavoro ❤
You are killing me with your Italian! I adore the language and the country.
It is surprising how talented Lenard’s voice work is :-)
Godbless his soul 😇
Oh, my! Leonard's voice is yummy. His version of *What Is a Youth* should have been used in the movie...it's ever so much better than the other singer's rendition.
What is a youth?
Impetuous fire.
What is a maid?
Ice and desire.
The world wags on
A rose will bloom,
It then will fade
So does a youth.
So does the fairest maid.
Comes a time when one sweet smile
Has it's season for awhile
Then Love's in love with me
Some may think only to marry.
Others will tease and tarry.
Mine is the very best parry,
Cupid he rules us all.
Caper the caper; sing me the song
Death will come soon to hush us along
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall,
Love is a pass-time that never will pall.
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall,
Cupid he rules us all.
(20 second flute interlude)
A rose will bloom, it then will fade.
So does a youth.
So does the fairest maid.
THANK YOU ! BEAUTIFUL ...
Thanks kindly.
Thanks Krizia
I LOVE THIS BY LEONARD HIMSELF ! 😘 ❤️ MAGNIFIQUE !
Forever young and beautiful!
He Should’ve Sung this in the Movie♥️🌟
Wow... what a beautiful voice he had!!!
Beautiful!! Im obsessed with the music of Romeo and Juliet. Can not bring it out of my mind..Leonard i love you!
Thank you for posting this. His vocals are wonderful.
Fantastic performance! Mr Leonard Whiting. Beautiful voice
Tan jovencitos eran Olivia y Leonard. Inolvidables.
The best version I've heard. Everyone else that covers this song calls it "A time for us"
The melody is the same, but not the bridge. Henry Mancini almost completely rewrote that. Listen to them back to back.
Leonard Whiting has such a beautiful singing voice - wow! There's so much feeling in his phrasing...a true artist!
Leonard has such an ethereal voice. He should have released at least one album. My favourite tune sung by him is " you don't know me ".
His voice is far better than the guy who actually sang this in the movie!
Wow, what a cool and unique upload. Quite the Valentines present. I knew Leonard was an accomplished singer, but had never heard him before. Thanks!
Snuggles McSquishbottom God bless you! :)
Very nice
I did not know that the actor is such a great vocalist!
Why is it we did not know Leonard Whiting had performed this song! I fell in love with it ever since! I've herd it so many and endless time!
By the way he is a TENOR
Why does this song make me so sad?
animals rule same I'm so close to crying but I'm obsessed with this song lol
I can not listen without tears streaming
Because it's the truth.
It's like a story of the passing of time and teenage years so yes, quite sad
Yes. This song haunts us all. So poignant and melancholy... Whenever I think of it in my mind it congers up emotion. So pure, sweet and true. Would not want to have missed the opportunity to hear Lenoard sing What is a Youth from his own Romeo and Juliet. I first heard him sing something different on youtube about a week ago and was startled by his beautiful voice. Franco Zeferelli may have felt it not approperate for Leonard to sing this in the film, but he certainly must have been in the running... Oh, wait. What am I saying? WIAY is actually sung by a person at the Capulet ball. It isn't a voice over. Romeo need to have this sung about him, not by him! People will likely agree that the vocal quality of his voice is perfect for this song, however...
He also did "The Raven" for Alan Parsons Project.
A beautiful face and an angelic voice - Leonard Whiting has it all. I just wonder why he did not pursue a singing career as well!

Oh, Leonard your killing me love w/ that voice. Happy birthday !!!!😍😍😍
Bellísima voz !!!!digna de reconocimiento ❤️❤️❤️
Gyönyörű dal Csodálatos énekessel gratulálok hozzá
So handsome & a fantastic version of the song .2: 11 that picture🥺

He should’ve Sung
This in The Movie♥️🌟👑
I liked the version with the guy singing in the movie ok, but this is SOOO much better, IMO! I remember seeing something where Leonard said they initially thought about having him sing it, but they obviously decided against it. I wonder why? Oh well....I suppose it worked out, but this is fantastic! I can see him singing it to Olivia and I know he was thinking about her when he sang it. I think it's pretty obvious that they love each other when you see them together. This is so wonderful, Ciro. Thank you so much for posting it! What a gem this is! 🙂
The song is actually called "What is a Youth."
no its actually an italian song called un giorno per noi then it got translated into english it was composed by nino rota.
What a voice!
His long notes 😍
What a lovely rendition @leonardwhiting ❤❤ Romeo & Juliet lives on
I has no idea he had recorded this - wonderful job, Sir!!
Love love this..... I've only heard Johnny Mathis version... this is beautiful! Best Romeo and Juliet ever!
He sings so well. I love his voice.
Very beutifull music.
AMAZING !!!
I would die without knowing that Leonard could sing.
Thanks for sharing! I love this long :) God bless you all
Extraordinaire !!!

Thank you channel owner! A favorite film- I have lost track of "how many times" - all of Mr. Zeffirelli's films are superlative- must have been a perfectionist-
Where did you find the posters- back then or wandering "junk" shops- I loathe that term- demeaning to what I regard as "treasures", many items once cherished- now collecting dust- I wanted to own an antique store before the world was "invaded" by Ikea and minimalist, IMHO- unappealing stark boxes- not a "home"- to each his or her own. Do you know what the "helmets" they resemble them, the most elegant ladies wear to cover their hair- cleanliness but mostly adornment- unfortunately the costume dept. had to use "grommets"! Funny how they DO stand out- well a tiny quibble- right?! They had metallic thread and "cloth of gold" in medieval times but no plastic type material- the face masks- were they painted, stiffened paper? Those hair helmets have "bugged" me for years! I did ask a fashion historian on RUclips but never heard back- please somebody- any miliners in the crowd?! Namaste from Canada
Beautiful! Better than the singer in film. Bravo 👏👏👏
So beautiful ❤
The guy singing at the party was good, but Leonard Whiting- Damn son
His version would have made a great song for the ending credits since it had a sadder tone than the one sung in the movie.
charming guy with a charming simple voice (but i like so the version of "leonardo",the singer in the movie)
what a treasure.........thank you.......
Leonard waa quite accomplished
Happy birthday Leonard whiting
Awesomely gifted💝 Juliet must be proud☺
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you, for this!!!😊
1960's version of Zach Efron; dontcha think? 💖 He was a gorgeous man with a beautiful voice. He made that choice not to have his voice used because his role was so big, but; like many, I would've to have heard it. As a senior citizen, He's good-looking too & very down-to-earth.
A much improved "version" of Zac Efron, I think.
I was in Santa Cruz then. I would have died or killed to know he was in Oakland. What husband? What kids? Only melting into his eyes. Swoon.
