Posting a comment here that I'll update over time with things I wish I included in the video! - I've seen a lot of comments about BLACKPINK and TWICE not being talked about in terms of their importance in making K-pop a global phenomenon; I totally agree with this, I wish I had highlighted both groups more. The reason I highlighted BTS so much is because at the time, we expected groups from the big three (especially after 2NE1 kinda faded out) to have some kind of global impact, but a group from a random small company taking the world by storm like that was pretty unheard of. But, yes, totally agree BLACKPINK and TWICE needed to at least be a larger part of that conversation! - I didn't include a comprehensive mashup of groups that debuted in 4th gen because I kinda assumed we were still in it and most people watching would know a lot of that already! That's why some of your faves might not show up in the 4th gen part, haha. Not super well future-proofed but whatever... - I saw another theory about 4th generation in here being about technology, which I think could be a better way of defining 4th gen than as a HYBE takeover. There's a clip where Girls' Generation is preparing for a comeback in 4th gen and some of the members who have continued playing music shows poke fun at the other members for not knowing what a 4k fancam or ending fairy is, haha. Definitely think technology and TikTok is another great way to define 4th gen! Thanks for watching and leaving comments!
Did you watch Soshi Tam Tam to know about Yuri teasing Sooyoung, Tiffany, and the other members? You really are a 2nd gen fan. Twice and BP deserved more highlight, it's true, and I also wanted to add IVE in the discussion of 4th gen because I think they're also an important figure in their gen especially because Wonyoung came from a survival program, which was mentioned in the video. It's kind of like a butterfly effect. Kpop is awesome
I agree with bp and twice, instead of putting them here bts is more making sense. bp and twice do help in some area but they taking more hits after hits at west only after bts breakthrough in global market. this remind me with dkdktv video (i know they are abit problematic but they make a fair video but it was 4years ago. ) ruclips.net/video/kPS4tCHT6SA/видео.htmlsi=SSZBGkU-D0U5LwYU
Thank you for being honest and brave. Not all kpop fan will accept the fact that BTS paved the way and Newjeans break the stereotype and create new concept but neutral kpop fans know. Hybe really is big now. The number of kpop group joining Weverse also increase. Opinion will be for individual but data is evidence.
The “into the new world” outro with those collages of debuting trainees made me tear up. Firstly, because of the song. ITNW has been that anthem and will always become that anthem. It’s so perfect because all these trainees are debuting into a new world and bringing us along with it. Secondly, the collages just remind me of the Barbie (2023) movie montage and showed memories of childhood and growing up and it’s just so significantly similar. All these trainees with their hopes and dreams, and it’s just mesmerizing. Thank you for such an amazing video!
Coming back from leaving K-pop (3rd gen fan), it was truly insane to see how everything evolved from then. This also explains how New Jeans brought me back to K-pop. I love their new down to earth approach, with how K-pop songs and performances became more and more elaborate, they refreshed it
i agree! i fell off of kpop around late 2020 and was a little intimidated to get back into it since it changed so much so fast with the use of new marketing strategies/social media & new group debuts. i had no idea how HYBE even became a thing and i had a lot to learn and catch up on but it was definitely New Jeans (and Aespa) that got me back in. it was hard to ignore New Jeans, their music is so easy on the ears and their Y2K style is eye catching
New Jeans' Super Shy is very representative of the 5th Gen sound and choreography. It sounds like elevator music at first but it's so catchy! People can passively listen to this style of music while vibin but they can also participate more actively by doing the accessible choreography. 3rd Gen was about perfection and excess and elevating and distancing these larger than life figures. 4th Gen was about these larger than life figures permeating every media and saying "Hey let us interact with you". 5th Gen is more down to earth and chill, saying "You can just play our song in the background while you study... and if you wanna take a break you can move your body along with us".
I HAD THE EXACT SAME REACTION TO THIS VIDEO!! the newjeans explanation oml. i dropped off in 2018-2019 bc everything sounded so samey but too high production
New Jeans is nothing more than what's currently popular on tiktok. Jersey Beat is the new thing on tiktok? Here's a Jersey Beat song. Frail female vocalists blow up on tiktok? lets do that.
@@matieking every single time someone makes a harmless comment, there HAS to be that guy that replies with something harsh trying to be edgy. it’s just sad
personally, i would define 4th gen as a more internet-focused generation, less of a focus on emulating western culture or establishing dominance but companies realising how to make idols maximally profitable. kpop is an incredibly online community(stans, selca instagram, lives etc.) and 'stage presence' is determined by the type of faces idols make in fancams(which actually has little correlation to stage presence). kpop has become increasingly insular, the formula is very easy to replicate and any worries audiences have(i.e unions, labour rights) are completely out of discussion
definitely!!! i also think that this is so significant since this generation had to go through the pandemic and the boom of kpop as a digital entertainment space for roughly 2.5 years! no other generation had to thrive with music shows with no audience, reliance on vlives/bubble/youtube/online concerts to interact with fans, and the need to do well on tiktok/reels bc of the rise of pandemic dance challenges
i always see deamcatcher as 4th gen. them in 2017 is so unknown and they are a lot more known in the 4th gen era, just like their 2018 counterparts. so i think its a bit unfair to categorize them as 3rd gen when they arent even from big4 to blow up in their debut year. in fact, any 2017 debuted group would raise and fall the same way as any 2018 debuted group, especially if they are not from big4 and cant make an impact in their debut year. i think every kpop generation theorist should acknowldge this fact. i feel like we should have seperate generation theries for big4 vs non big4 because the path is so different. you can expect blackpink to make an impact in their debut year aka 2016 but lets be real, no groups that arent big4 that debuted in 2017 can make a huge impact in their debut year. it just makes me sad dreamcatcher worked so hard to finally achieve first wins but because of these inaccurate generation divisions (which didnt take into account smaller company groups that generally take time to blow up) , they arent even talked about as much anymore because people keep on grouping them with groups that debuted 3-4 years before them(red velvet, mamamoo, etc) when they literally have more similarities in terms of sound and technology when debut (vlive, etc, this didnt exist when 2014 debuted groups started out) when they too deserve to be compared with G-idle and Loona. (both Loona and G-idle companies although arent big4, they are still known in the industry and arent small like dreamcatcher company). i hoped people take this into account and started including dreamcatcher in the 4th gen charts along with G-idle. it makes me sad that loona and G-idle has a lot more exposure because they are called 4th gen when in fact dreamcatcher has a lot more similarities with them compared to red velvet and mamamoo. Dreamcatcher should be allowed to be 4th gen just as much as the Boyz was given speciality and a 'unique case' to be 4th gen. I think dreamcatcehr coming from small company and take time to blow up should be taken into account, just as how people consider the Boyz 4 th gen despitde debuting in 2017 because they debut in december(eventhough WannaOne who always were called 4th gen debuted 4 months before them).
I want to congratulate you because this is the FIRST video I see where someone truly understands how kpop generations work. I’ve been fighting with stans for YEARS about what defines a generation and its like you took the words directly out of my mind. This is amazing, and the editing/remixing is absolutely impeccable. You should be proud of yourself!
oh my god, the "into the new world" at the end gave me CHILLS. this video is truly a treat for the eyes and ears, _amazing_ work! I'm in the habit of watching things ad 2x speed, but I need to watch this again at normal speed _just_ so I can appreciate it properly!
dude me too, i either skip thru or 2.0 speed, but the editing had me sitting here just taking it all in. the way they phrased each comment is so charming too?? so great.
Fck I'm crying I love every bit of the ending of this video, we're witnessing something that is so so important, I'm so excited and yet I'd like time to stop Everything is history but realizing/knowing that you're witnessing it is powerful and moving
5th gen is the era of the “global group” we will begin to see so many more companies trying this formula and soon the line of Kpop and just regular pop will be blurred
You can tell this vid was made by a true fan of K-pop. There’s so much research, respect, and overall fun in this video. Props to you. I liked, shared, subscribed. Even showed my mom this video.
omg thank you so much for stating the "king and queen of synchronization" for seventeen and gfriend it really means a lot especially bcs sometimes the new gen fans don't acknowledge it :"D your edits are fire! also nice research
i also wanted to add to your point that shinee was really the only group that was doing more of the complex choreo and some of the EDM infusions in their songs that would set the trend for future 3rd gen groups!!
I was gonna say the same. Even tho the video talked about when it became more popular to have these really complex choreos, SHINee's Lucifer is just a breaking point in my opinion as someone who has listened to kpop since 2012 and was used to the "tell me" kind of choreo (nothing wrong with them, but it was more of a fun catchy thing to do while singing than a integral part of the attention that the comeback recibed)
I love the 5th gen analysis. Ever since NJ debuted I've been saying that they are the new generation. It felt weird to say because 4th gen is still young but you could just tell that they were changing the game, I'm glad to see more people agree, even though I don't think we'll hear a proper "5th gen" for a while still. Also I think that the international groups that Hybe or Jyp (I didn't know about jyp trying this btw) are trying to make, will just be something apart from kpop even if they apear on korean shows. I just don't see a whole generation like a 6th gen being all about international groups... at least I hope not so I hope I'm not proven wrong. Side note: this whole video was one amazing mash up, loved it
I feel the same about the groups that came since 2018 and the groups since 2022, as that it just can't be seen as the same thing. I got called out for calling the 2023 groups 5th generation, people even get salty at the mention of it for some reason? And here I'm failing to understand what exactly is being taken away from them by that but anyway. A new generation as far as I saw comes when a lot of new big groups debut at the same time. That happened in 2022 for girl groups, and in 2023 for boy groups, although more bigger boy groups are still debuting in 2024. Earlier generations used to come from the big 3, but now as Hybe has joined and made another big company, they set another line in 2022 by debuting their groups at that time, and continuing debuting from their smaller companies all the way to this day. I think people just can't wrap around the fact that new big groups are coming from a different company, and that same company is making and starting trends in music and concepts, like it or not, making things in the last 2 years look simply different than before.
@@leppaeti1815i think people get salty about "5th gen has started" because it probably just hasnt. i know there's already a lot of iconic bops for 4th gen but, idk i just think 4th gen still hasnt reached its spikiest peak, after that happens is what's gonna give birth to 5th gen- and also when everyone feels ready about it too. when everyone is ready for 5th gen then 5th gen happens. does that make sense
@@haewon.polarbear I see what you're saying, but people have already kinda moved on to the 5th in these few months as much as I saw. The thing is, it's not really up to us ifans, I read it was actually kmedia who started talking about this, specifically mnet, who owns zerobaseone I think, but the others as well. So in the end, if the kfans go with that, we in the end have nothing to say really🤷♀️.
your mashups are FIRE! the editing also makes things very clean and efficient - it's straight to the point, no unnecessary fluff, and it's simple and unique (ex. only white-and-color contrasts, plain font) one of the things that first drew me to your videos. i also absolutely love and admire how you approach kpop with this analytical mindset and critical eye rather than getting entirely sucked into the wormhole. thank you for another great vid :)
The editing is incredible, congrats! I've started listening to k-pop around three years ago, but I never got how generations worked, so from the bottom of my heart: thank you!
this is a really interesting take! esp when you pointed out 5th gen's down-to-earth concepts and that "anyone can do it", also how the members are becoming more diverse. i can def see how they're pushing for idols to be (or at least seem?) relatable, like being more unfiltered, bringing up topics of current issues, etc. i really do hope it's for the better tho, maybe someday certain "fans" can stop being so entitled to their favs and actually treat them like any other human 😅 and as always, your editing is phenomenal 😍
KIOF is also a new group that i personally consider is beginning 5th gen and they're INCREDIBLE, like amazing concept, live vocals, amazing stage presence and choreography, honestly i see some hope for the future of kpop
4th gen to me flourished hand in hand with the internet. the effects of the pandemic urged the industry to adapt to the rise of fandom culture in social media (esp. tiktok and twitter). hence, the growth of self-produced variety shows, lives, video calls, fancams, youtube reactions, nft-based projects, online concerts. in a way, 4th gen transformed kpop into a virtual experience as well.. we see companies now compete for the best Marketing Strategy and Concept to promote their groups since nowadays, you cant go far with only talent and music given how saturated the Kpop community has been

@@forproject1666 I always thought the debut of Gidle, IZONE, ITZY, and Stray Kids marked the beginning of 4th gen. And the debut of EXO, Red Velvet, and Got 7 marked the beginning of 3rd gen. DreamCatcher literally debuted same year as Pristine and Gugudan.
the atz/skz mix made me go feral i also think it's important to point out that while XG are not inherently labelled as a kpop group, they are still active within the kpop industry so they should definitely still be included in this timeline
I'm cryingggggggg I've been a kpop fan sinceee then, upon hearing the ITNW on the last part feels so emotional how big kpop right now and how it became more diverse than everrr. Hats off to this content creator, Literally an OG Kpop Fannnnn.
this made me so emotional somehow... /pos kpop has been a major part of my life for the past decade, and to see it evolve and take the forms it did and continues to do is so inspiring and interesting to me
Hello! Veteran kpop fan here, since 2005. In case someone actually wonders about the gens. These are the officially agreed upon years over time for the different gens: Gen 1: Seo Taiji & Boys debut - 2002. Gen 2: 2003 - 2011. Gen 3: 2012 - 2017. Gen 4: 2018 - Currently still ongoing and might change any moment. Kpop gens basically change when a hand full of important new groups debut together. 2003, 2012 and 2018 had huge debuts each year compared to the years prior or after.
I agree, but also I really think that the 4th gen, more then marked by the debut of any group, can be defined as "the bts effect", as the big increase of public interested in kpop caused by the BTS popularity plus the internet foucus as a consecuence of the covid pandemic
I would say this timeline is accurate until the 4th gen part- The Boyz are 4th gen & they debuted in 2017 and also 5th gen has officially started according to K-media & some idols themselves. The exact date and first 5th gen group are debatable but it's generally believed it was somewhere around early 2023.

@@forproject1666Well, although your words sound pretty convincing, I think they are not entirely true. I love DC from their debut and remember how their first cbs sound veeeery similar to gfriend’s songs who debuted in 2016 - it was just like DC is their dark side or evil twins hahaha And their choreographies from 2017-2018 are so 3d gen! Later they found their own flavour and place in kpop arena among 4th gen groups and I’m very happy for them! But I’m not entirely sure what generation they belong to. I think, they started as a 3d gen but found themselves in 4th gen if it makes sense haha
@@lulabelle11 the boyz were the first 4th gen idols because they debuted so late into 2017 that they were basically up against 4th gen idols. kard officially debuted in 2017 and are still considered 3rd gen idols.
Thank you for such a brilliantly written, edited, mixed and concise experience. The music combinations were beyond amazing and it's impressive how you managed to fit so much history into such a short video. It was a very brief recount of 20+ years, but super easy to understand and appreciate.
thank you SO much for showing what k-pop was influenced by. i’m so tired of seeing black peoples influences erased, especially in this industry. thank you for including and educating!
an important part of generations in kpop is the end of it, the groups debuting around this period are usually the ones that impact the next generation the most and set a precedence on how the future generation will sound and look like. ur example of newjeans being a very good example of how they dominated the industry to display the dominance 4th gen had on the industry, making way for now 5th gen
Also i think a video talking about the changes kpop stans have went through throughout generations might be interesting. (or something similar to that topic) Nowadays kpop seems less fun because fans are just overly critical and judgemental, killing a LOT of the fun that kpop used to be.
SO GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK!!!!! ur videos r easily my favorite on the platform, this one was no exception; literal piece of art i cant imagine how much time + effort went into this !! storytelling, flow, style, everything is so perfect + ur analysis is so insightful !! i acc cant put into words how talented u r + how amazing ur videos r !! sm small details i adore, cant wait to rewatch several times 🔥🔥
I LOVE THIS VID SM, and btw there are currently some 5th gen groups, like kiss of life, baby monster, vcha (they’ll debut soon), zb1, XIKERS, BOYNEXTDOOR, geenius, etc…
Omg thank you so much for making this!!! I grew up with Korean friends but back in the 90s I was only into hip hop. I’ve been djing since back then and have been doing weddings since 2012. Gangnam style was the first Kpop song I got requests for. It felt like a shift in pop cultural appreciation of K-pop in the US. Since then I’ve slowly added to the playlist with anything that’s a SUPER big hit like bts. Newjeans is the first group that I personally love and I’m not just downloading for audience request. I love your explanation !! Their style seems more down to earth and they seem like a group of friends rather than an overly glamorized over produced “act” !! I’ll check out the others you mentioned and dig into the history as well!! Much respect for your knowledge and time spent making this!!
One thing that stood out to me this year that 2023 has been the year of iconic foreign center debuts, ZB1 Zhang Hao, KIOF Natty, Evnne Keita, Babymonster Chiquita
Idk why but I feel like 4th gen started when Gidle debuted with Latata, it was something huge that any girl in whole kpop company was able to make such a banger after and after and after. Also Soyeon's influential on gamers scene (yeah Im talking about LoL KDA) was monumental, Gidle gain a lot of popularity back then bringing next people to kpop just like me. I might not be right but that big KDA success left a big mark in the industry.
I got into Kpop in the summer of 2017, and I remember when Latata was first recommended to me on RUclips. There are many possible start dates for each generation that changes depending on the person and could be shaped by their experiences. Latata was my personal beginning of the 4th generation.
@@imagiguard Uh, no. Gen dates are not based on fan's opinions or personal experiences lol- they're an official thing determined by Korean Media and the idol industry. The start of 4th gen was sometime in 2017; The Boyz debuted in late 2017 and they're 4th gen, for example.

this video is really great but i feel like blackpink not having been talked about more is kinda a disservice, they aren't my fav group by any means but id say theyre right there with bts in terms of global reach and popularity
IU is second gen and I think super iconic though she probably doesn't influence groups so much since she's primarily a singer. I do want to see where soloists go from here though Thanks for this super comprehensive video! I really enjoyed it (especially the music)
Another thing I see with people talking about kpop generations, it's that it will never make sense if people think that the borders of generations are engraved by a precise date. The borders between generations are blurry and will always be blurry. A big part of the reason is the overlapping of new and older generations. Sometimes two generations will rule kpop at the same time (example: blackpink/itzy, gidle/newjeans). Groups being completely different and not belonging to the same defined "generation" but still being at their peak at the same time. That's the way it is and it is blurry. Idols generations are not like iPhones generations being simply dictated by the date of their manufacture. But many people think of it that way to oversimplify it. I would say, it actually goes against the point of having generations to begin with. Even myself sometimes, I wonder if it's relevant to talk about generations rather than just talking about time periods. Because here is an example, people often say they love 3rd gen kpop but what they mean is 2015-2019 kpop in which 3rd gen groups ruled and were at their peak. A lot of people think of 2011-2015 as 2nd gen because 2nd gen groups were still ruling at that time, even though it is "officially" 3rd gen or 2.5gen because of the new debuts. In the end, sometimes it is unclear what people are referring to. We should just go by years to make more sense. I also think that the "0.5" are very much needed in certain cases and often overlooked. There is definitely a first 2nd gen and a second 2nd gen, hence why the 2.5 gen. I predict that it will be the case for 4th gen too, 4.5 gen is coming.
I really agree on this. Precise dates makes it all the more confusing tbh. Kpop generational boundaries will always be blurry and people should just accept that. For example, Exid and Exo debuted in the same year (2012) but some might classify Exid as belonging to the 2nd gen because of their vibe and sound and Exo more in 3rd gen because their peak was in the 3rd gen years and they evolved along with their other contemporaries. This is how I feel with 5th gen starting tbh. I feel like it's just 4.5th gen since there's still no significant changes that happened between 4th gen and the generation now. Sure, in the future we might look back in the period now and be able to pinpoint when exactly 5th gen starts but change happens gradually and not in a snap of a finger. This is why I don't get it when there's exact dates for generational changes like November 17, 2017 or something since we can't just wake up one day and suddenly we're in the 5th gen. It doesn't really work like that
@@SM-ky6pb Thanks, totally! I also kept saying that generations is something you're most able to define in the future when you can look back. It's pointless to decide one day that it ends and starts without even knowing the next. People say "Mnet said it so it's official blah blah blah" it's just a marker and it's not anchored in time, people need to relax their mind about generations.
I’m a simple person, I see Sunny as your pfp, I click. EDITED: FYI, 1st Gen is also the mark of a literal cultural reset in terms of what is allowed/regulations in music broadcast in S.Korea. In which artists now are able to sing lyrics in english, enjoy a larger range of permissible styling and even gain profits for their music (album profits use to go solely to producers with artists/singers gain theirs only from performing). All which was not an option before. Source: Happy togther episode with TVXQ and Lee Seung Chul (2017). So yeah, came for Sunny, left with wisdom.
A black person tried to tell me that K-pop owes its beginnings to black music. There is some truth there, but there is also the musical elements of broadway show tunes in K-pop. Listen to the song “Tonight” from West Side Story or Barbara Streisand’s version of “My Man” in the movie Funny Girl. This is what many 3rd generation K-pop songs sound like, especially my favorite, the Lovelyz. Their “Morning Star” starts with arpeggios on a piano, pianissimo, retardo. Then, the rest of the orchestra comes in. This song takes you on an emotional roller coaster as it slows down and speeds up from miniature pianissimo to crescendo. Then, there is a bridge at 2:30 starting the song’s build up to a Crescendo at 2:35 when Jin sings up the musical scale and progressively louder. This is not an easy feat for a singer. At 2:40 Kie takes over as “Morning Star” reaches its climax instrumentally at 2:43 and vocally at 2:47. The ending as Jin slows down singing quietly, the instruments following, pianissimo, retardo. Then, there is the way most of the 3rd generation’s songs were written and sung. These songs were written in Tin Pan Alley style, verse, verse, chorus. But the 3rd generation’s songs were written with more than one chorus, and the musical measures get repeated with different singers. The Lovelyz “Just” and “Dear You” for examples of these musical techniques. There are also musical bridges, blues chords, and disco beats. The songs begin and end with pianissimo, retardo. With K-pop Girl Groups, every member gets the opportunity to sing lead for a line in the song. In essence, there are as many lead singers in each group as there are members. This plus the infectious hi low tones illustrated so well in F(x) “Shadow” makes 3rd generation K-pop “Truly Unique.” Then, there is the quirky, silliness of K-pop songs best example Oh My Girl’s “Banana Allergy.” K-pop has brought the “Joy” back to music akin to the second coming of The Beatles.
Doesn't feel like 11 minutes long video as i keep replaying it The pacing in this video is so damn good, you know how to keep viewers attention Also the song mixing is smooth and easy to listen.. Great video, hope ur channel grow fast!
I was there when AOA debuted (was a fan of both BAP and Exo at the time) so they felt firmly Gen 3 to me but Exid somehow just feels like Gen 2 (again, personal opinion; all of this feels subjective to each person's experience with kpop at large
that was the best mashup i have literally heard in YEARS, i mean the transition that introduced blackswan was top notch!! i love how even when you changed your fonts and kind of showed a new face with your video, you've definitely kept your essence and style of editing the same!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Love the editing! You’re the first person I see mentions New Jeans as the bomb for 5th gen. Unless I’m on the wrong side of social media, everyone seems to neglect the idea that their debut set a standard for 5th Gen, wether they’re 5th Gen or not, they definitely marked the difference between 4th and 5th. Can’t wait to see what else kpop as a whole can offer
I really love how you tell a story. It is fun and humorous and most likely one of the best 101’s for those who want to understand what happened to kpop
i think 4th gen should be analyzed more. 4th gen started almost post pandemic ( txt itzy everglow gidle 2019 ) this was a very different era from the other eras, in post covid we have loona, stayc, weeekly ( 2020, rise of nugu grps ) and then late covid it was the debut of the top ggs ( 2021-2022, ive, aespa, lesserafim, newjeans ) i think the debut of the big ggs from late covid was the trademark of the 4th gen and made a name for themselves like how bts and blackpink did in 3rd gen even tho they werent the ones who started it. 4th gen is all abt aesthetic and tiktok challenges and i think it really reflects the generation of teens nowadays and the trends we have rn.
AAAAA YOUR FINALLY BACK! i missed your videos so much theyre always so eye opening and well produced and this new video is no exception! looking forward to everythibg else you make ! ♥
I think a defining trait of 4th gen kpop groups is that they provide a more intimate connection with their fans, for better or worse. Weverse, Bubble, and various youtube vlogs/behind-the-scenes videos all provide ways for fans to get a closer look into the lives and thoughts of idols, and these types of media rose with 4th gen. A big reason for this change can probably be attributed to BTS and their youtube vlogs/Bangtan bombs. They really popularized using social media to give a closer look into the everyday lives of idols, and their videos are likely a big reason why they garnered so many fans. That's all haha. Great video! You really are one of the best Kpop editors/channels out there.
Yeah it's pretty crazy. I was a early second generation fan so if you told 19 year old me that kpop would be cool in 15 years i would have not believed it seeing BoA's US debut not go that well. ALSO THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING IT NEEDS MORE VIEWS
Unrelated, this is an amazing video but even the mashups are amazing on their own, like ive genuinely just listened to just the audio of this video because you did so good with mashups and transitions ❤
I absolutely adore your editing- you clearly put so much thought and detail into every transition and layout so that your videos are art pieces we can watch. I especially like the part at 3:07 where the Korean ver. is in your left ear and the Japanese ver. is in your right! So creative!! Also, this was a really great explanation on the fluidity, genres, and emergences within different generations. You clearly did your research. I’m delighted to see you back and hope that we’ll be seeing some more from you soon!
I wish Nu'est was included in the 3rd Gen debuts... They had one of the highest views on their debut music video. Also Nu'est should have been included with the other HYBE groups too, they gained a lot of fans after produce 101. But other than that, great video!!
i came to the video to see a take over generations in kpop and instead i watched a massively impressive mega mashup of some of my favorite kpop songs which i'm NOT MAD AT ALL !!! you're amazing
The young me that used to listen 2nd Gen K-pop alone in his bedroom would be very happy to know that many people would join him in this love for this music style. This video made me cry a little 😅
OMG YOU'RE BACK?!? i missed your videos so much, this one is amazing, it's crazy how you managed to explain the history of k-pop in just an 11 minute video, and the editing is amazing as always, the wait is always worth if it's your videos, always high quality and fun to see 😭💗
I’m a fan of K-pop since 2007/2nd gen with Wonder Girls, BoA, SNSD, KARA, 2NE1, f(x), 4minute, and others~ Seeing it evolve throughout all this time sure has been a fantastic experience. I’m still a big fan to this day even in my early 30s, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll have in store for us. Gotta mention that your video brought me nostalgia but also left me feeling hopeful for the future of K-pop. Great editing too, couldn’t stop watching it!
i wish wjsn was still included in that 3rd gen mashup - they're still "active" despite lack of comeback this year & lasted this long compared to other post ioi groups 😅 anyways i really love your editing
I respect your opinion about TXT at 7:37 but personally I think that for the start of the 4th Gen Stray Kids, and (G)I-die started the the 4th generation which just ended
I think 4th gen is hard to define because it still ongoing? If Mnet didn't started the 5th gen things, the media probably won't say about it this year,2023.
What about Cube ent? Or did i miss it
Did you watch Soshi Tam Tam to know about Yuri teasing Sooyoung, Tiffany, and the other members? You really are a 2nd gen fan.
Twice and BP deserved more highlight, it's true, and I also wanted to add IVE in the discussion of 4th gen because I think they're also an important figure in their gen especially because Wonyoung came from a survival program, which was mentioned in the video. It's kind of like a butterfly effect. Kpop is awesome
@@aurora_baeno 😂
I agree with bp and twice, instead of putting them here bts is more making sense. bp and twice do help in some area but they taking more hits after hits at west only after bts breakthrough in global market. this remind me with dkdktv video (i know they are abit problematic but they make a fair video but it was 4years ago. )

This isn't really a video about generations is it, it's an excuse to beatmatch a bunch of iconic bops. I love it.
Exactly F’real

It’s great.

Facts...❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥🤣🤣🤣
The “into the new world” outro with those collages of debuting trainees made me tear up. Firstly, because of the song. ITNW has been that anthem and will always become that anthem. It’s so perfect because all these trainees are debuting into a new world and bringing us along with it. Secondly, the collages just remind me of the Barbie (2023) movie montage and showed memories of childhood and growing up and it’s just so significantly similar. All these trainees with their hopes and dreams, and it’s just mesmerizing. Thank you for such an amazing video!
no same i got emotional 😭
Those girls were contestant of Dream Academy (6 of which are now members of Katseye) if y'all are wondering!!😊
You’re such an incredible editor, it can’t be overstated enough!! :)
I agree! (im your 600th like btw)
💯 goddamn I'm blown away, the editing is AMAZING
@@matieking every single time someone makes a harmless comment, there HAS to be that guy that replies with something harsh trying to be edgy. it’s just sad
personally, i would define 4th gen as a more internet-focused generation, less of a focus on emulating western culture or establishing dominance but companies realising how to make idols maximally profitable. kpop is an incredibly online community(stans, selca instagram, lives etc.) and 'stage presence' is determined by the type of faces idols make in fancams(which actually has little correlation to stage presence). kpop has become increasingly insular, the formula is very easy to replicate and any worries audiences have(i.e unions, labour rights) are completely out of discussion
agreed!! it's the era of the internet for sure, more so than just vlive and variety shows of third gen it's more viral moments and tiktok trends
Yes but because of it helped kpop reach countries it never reached before
definitely!!! i also think that this is so significant since this generation had to go through the pandemic and the boom of kpop as a digital entertainment space for roughly 2.5 years!
no other generation had to thrive with music shows with no audience, reliance on vlives/bubble/youtube/online concerts to interact with fans, and the need to do well on tiktok/reels bc of the rise of pandemic dance challenges
i always see deamcatcher as 4th gen. them in 2017 is so unknown and they are a lot more known in the 4th gen era, just like their 2018 counterparts. so i think its a bit unfair to categorize them as 3rd gen when they arent even from big4 to blow up in their debut year. in fact, any 2017 debuted group would raise and fall the same way as any 2018 debuted group, especially if they are not from big4 and cant make an impact in their debut year. i think every kpop generation theorist should acknowldge this fact. i feel like we should have seperate generation theries for big4 vs non big4 because the path is so different. you can expect blackpink to make an impact in their debut year aka 2016 but lets be real, no groups that arent big4 that debuted in 2017 can make a huge impact in their debut year.
it just makes me sad dreamcatcher worked so hard to finally achieve first wins but because of these inaccurate generation divisions (which didnt take into account smaller company groups that generally take time to blow up) , they arent even talked about as much anymore because people keep on grouping them with groups that debuted 3-4 years before them(red velvet, mamamoo, etc) when they literally have more similarities in terms of sound and technology when debut (vlive, etc, this didnt exist when 2014 debuted groups started out) when they too deserve to be compared with G-idle and Loona.
@@forproject1666 yeah but 3rd gen technically ended by November 2017
I was JUST about to say that first sentence in your comment, verbatim. Like my mouth was agape
I'm literally in tears by that ending 😭😭🤌 and I'm not even Korean
Yes, had no idea how much I needed vaporwave into the new world in my life
dude me too, i either skip thru or 2.0 speed, but the editing had me sitting here just taking it all in. the way they phrased each comment is so charming too?? so great.
Fck I'm crying
I love every bit of the ending of this video, we're witnessing something that is so so important, I'm so excited and yet I'd like time to stop
Everything is history but realizing/knowing that you're witnessing it is powerful and moving
Even showed my mom this video.

omg thank you so much for stating the "king and queen of synchronization" for seventeen and gfriend it really means a lot especially bcs sometimes the new gen fans don't acknowledge it :"D your edits are fire! also nice research
i agree. i think they helped encourage the performance oriented groups of 4th gen.
i also wanted to add to your point that shinee was really the only group that was doing more of the complex choreo and some of the EDM infusions in their songs that would set the trend for future 3rd gen groups!!
Yes shinee, infinite and teen top where the only ones doing crazy crazy choreo at that time. I miss those times tbh.
I was gonna say the same. Even tho the video talked about when it became more popular to have these really complex choreos, SHINee's Lucifer is just a breaking point in my opinion as someone who has listened to kpop since 2012 and was used to the "tell me" kind of choreo (nothing wrong with them, but it was more of a fun catchy thing to do while singing than a integral part of the attention that the comeback recibed)
they were definitely not the only ones hahahah
Fr! The mashups in the videos is litterally a dam bop .
The editing is incredible, congrats! I've started listening to k-pop around three years ago, but I never got how generations worked, so from the bottom of my heart: thank you!
this is a really interesting take! esp when you pointed out 5th gen's down-to-earth concepts and that "anyone can do it", also how the members are becoming more diverse. i can def see how they're pushing for idols to be (or at least seem?) relatable, like being more unfiltered, bringing up topics of current issues, etc. i really do hope it's for the better tho, maybe someday certain "fans" can stop being so entitled to their favs and actually treat them like any other human 😅
and as always, your editing is phenomenal 😍
7:07 stop the transition wonderland to side effect was a masterpiece 💥
Your editing and mixing is fantastic. as always tbh. thank you for this video

the mashups are SO GOOD, I can always trust you to make the best transitions

4th gen to me flourished hand in hand with the internet. the effects of the pandemic urged the industry to adapt to the rise of fandom culture in social media (esp. tiktok and twitter). hence, the growth of self-produced variety shows, lives, video calls, fancams, youtube reactions, nft-based projects, online concerts. in a way, 4th gen transformed kpop into a virtual experience as well.. we see companies now compete for the best Marketing Strategy and Concept to promote their groups since nowadays, you cant go far with only talent and music given how saturated the Kpop community has been

Hello! Veteran kpop fan here, since 2005. In case someone actually wonders about the gens.
These are the officially agreed upon years over time for the different gens:
Gen 1: Seo Taiji & Boys debut - 2002.
The exact date and first 5th gen group are debatable but it's generally believed it was somewhere around early 2023.

an important part of generations in kpop is the end of it, the groups debuting around this period are usually the ones that impact the next generation the most and set a precedence on how the future generation will sound and look like. ur example of newjeans being a very good example of how they dominated the industry to display the dominance 4th gen had on the industry, making way for now 5th gen
5:38 BRO!!! Yes exactly! I literally was so confused why there wasn't BTS in the introduction of boys that debuted in 3rd gen
I'm so glad you're back, i've always loved your editing and you exceeded yourself with this video. I love your analysis and the mashups were great.
This editing is EVERYTHING, and personally i would like to mention the emergence of "virtual" idols like Plave, Mave, isegye idol, etc
Also i think a video talking about the changes kpop stans have went through throughout generations might be interesting. (or something similar to that topic) Nowadays kpop seems less fun because fans are just overly critical and judgemental, killing a LOT of the fun that kpop used to be.
the editing on this is PHENOMENAL wow.
SO GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK!!!!! ur videos r easily my favorite on the platform, this one was no exception; literal piece of art i cant imagine how much time + effort went into this !! storytelling, flow, style, everything is so perfect + ur analysis is so insightful !! i acc cant put into words how talented u r + how amazing ur videos r !! sm small details i adore, cant wait to rewatch several times 🔥🔥
is this automated roshambo?
I LOVE THIS VID SM, and btw there are currently some 5th gen groups, like kiss of life, baby monster, vcha (they’ll debut soon), zb1, XIKERS, BOYNEXTDOOR, geenius, etc…
NEVER CLICKED SO FAST OMG U R BACK OMG
Some of the best editing and infographics. Kudos to this channel for one of the best K-pop video explanations.
Snsd japanese discography truly is something that is unmatched to this day
And the Korean discography as well. They are (were) unreal... Even as soloists...
Shoujo Jidai >>> Sonyeo Shidae >> Girls' Generation
@@aurora_bae OMG, yes! This makes too much sense
That slowed down Into the New World at the end just did it for me 😔 There’s never gonna be a time I won’t feel melancholic whenever I hear ITNW
oh my gosh you’re back yesss
Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this video
Idk why but I feel like 4th gen started when Gidle debuted with Latata, it was something huge that any girl in whole kpop company was able to make such a banger after and after and after. Also Soyeon's influential on gamers scene (yeah Im talking about LoL KDA) was monumental, Gidle gain a lot of popularity back then bringing next people to kpop just like me. I might not be right but that big KDA success left a big mark in the industry.
ALSO AMAZING EDITING AS ALWAYS ❤
I got into Kpop in the summer of 2017, and I remember when Latata was first recommended to me on RUclips. There are many possible start dates for each generation that changes depending on the person and could be shaped by their experiences. Latata was my personal beginning of the 4th generation.
(G)I-DLE debuted in 2018 but 4th gen began sometime in 2017; The Boyz debuted in late 2017 and they're 4th gen, for example.
@@imagiguard Uh, no. Gen dates are not based on fan's opinions or personal experiences lol- they're an official thing determined by Korean Media and the idol industry. The start of 4th gen was sometime in 2017; The Boyz debuted in late 2017 and they're 4th gen, for example.
i always see deamcatcher as 4th gen. them in 2017 is so unknown and they are a lot more known in the 4th gen era, just like their 2018 counterparts. so i think its a bit unfair to categorize them as 3rd gen when they arent even from big4 to blow up in their debut year. in fact, any 2017 debuted group would raise and fall the same way as any 2018 debuted group, especially if they are not from big4 and cant make an impact in their debut year. i think every kpop generation theorist should acknowldge this fact. i feel like we should have seperate generation theries for big4 vs non big4 because the path is so different. you can expect blackpink to make an impact in their debut year aka 2016 but lets be real, no groups that arent big4 that debuted in 2017 can make a huge impact in their debut year.
it just makes me sad dreamcatcher worked so hard to finally achieve first wins but because of these inaccurate generation divisions (which didnt take into account smaller company groups that generally take time to blow up) , they arent even talked about as much anymore because people keep on grouping them with groups that debuted 3-4 years before them(red velvet, mamamoo, etc) when they literally have more similarities in terms of sound and technology when debut (vlive, etc, this didnt exist when 2014 debuted groups started out) when they too deserve to be compared with G-idle and Loona. I think dreamcatcehr coming from small company and take time to blow up should be taken into account, just as how people consider the Boyz 4 th gen despitde debuting in 2017 because they debut in december(eventhough WannaOne who always were called 4th gen debuted 4 months before them).
this video is really great but i feel like blackpink not having been talked about more is kinda a disservice, they aren't my fav group by any means but id say theyre right there with bts in terms of global reach and popularity
this style of editing makes me want to watch an hour long video/documentary about kpop like IT'S SO GOOD
IU is second gen and I think super iconic though she probably doesn't influence groups so much since she's primarily a singer.
I do want to see where soloists go from here though
Thanks for this super comprehensive video! I really enjoyed it (especially the music)
the ending/conclusion with into the new world playing in the background literally gave me chills oh my god
DAMN I THINK WE ALL CAN AGREE THAT THE EDITING WAS BOP! This was super informative and fun to watch! Keep it up💜💜🔥🔥
I’m a simple person, I see Sunny as your pfp, I click.
So yeah, came for Sunny, left with wisdom.
this editing is actually amazing. Thank you so much for this, it really helped me understand a lot
This plus the infectious hi low tones illustrated so well in F(x) “Shadow” makes 3rd generation K-pop “Truly Unique.” Then, there is the quirky, silliness of K-pop songs best example Oh My Girl’s “Banana Allergy.”
K-pop has brought the “Joy” back to music akin to the second coming of The Beatles.
I MISS YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH THANK YOU FOR COMING BACK
Doesn't feel like 11 minutes long video as i keep replaying it
The pacing in this video is so damn good, you know how to keep viewers attention
Also the song mixing is smooth and easy to listen.. Great video, hope ur channel grow fast!
AOA and EXID'S generations were always so confusing to me bc they both feel so 2nd gen but AOA is apparently 3rd so it trips me up sometimes lol
me with exo and btob,,,,
i mean, if you want to you can still see aoa as 2nd gen. i see them as being part of the transition, like 2.5 gen
Me with dreamcatcher because I always thought of them as 3rd gen group
I was there when AOA debuted (was a fan of both BAP and Exo at the time) so they felt firmly Gen 3 to me but Exid somehow just feels like Gen 2 (again, personal opinion; all of this feels subjective to each person's experience with kpop at large
AOA and EXID were nugus in 2012 and only started gaining popularity in 2014, so they're definitely 3rd gen.
3:20 Girls Generation paved the way periodt 💅
THE BEST K-TUBER EDITING IS BACK
this is one of the best youtube videos i have ever seen.
OMG I FREAKING LOVE THIS VIDEO. its really said a lot of about the journey of kpop and the editing... CHEFS KISS 🤏 INTO THE NEW WORLD AT THE END... 😭
This video should go viral its good for the new kpop fans that dont know anything and only arguing for his/her bias group is the best😂👍
that was the best mashup i have literally heard in YEARS, i mean the transition that introduced blackswan was top notch!! i love how even when you changed your fonts and kind of showed a new face with your video, you've definitely kept your essence and style of editing the same!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
GIRL THIS IS IT. THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR, SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY EXPLAINS THE GENERATIONS 🗣🗣🗣😀😀
i love the editing in this video so much. it makes me feel somewhat nostalgic? the mashups, mixing, layers, its all so well done. keep it up!!!!!!
The generational megamixes?!?! This is crazy! 😭😭😭 I was smiling ear to ear
not exactly a k-pop fan but love the information. very organised and i think i learnt a lot
AAAAA YOUR FINALLY BACK! i missed your videos so much theyre always so eye opening and well produced and this new video is no exception! looking forward to everythibg else you make ! ♥
This channel is the definition of "quality over quantity"
BABYMONSTER is also a group of 5th generation
Yeah it's pretty crazy. I was a early second generation fan so if you told 19 year old me that kpop would be cool in 15 years i would have not believed it seeing BoA's US debut not go that well.
ALSO THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING IT NEEDS MORE VIEWS
Unrelated, this is an amazing video but even the mashups are amazing on their own, like ive genuinely just listened to just the audio of this video because you did so good with mashups and transitions ❤
NO WAYYYY I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS I CANT BELIEVE YOURE BACK :D
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD VIDEO I'M LOSING MY MIND WHEN YOU JOINED THE HYBE LOGO WITH THE BIG3 I HAD GOOSEBUMPS THAT'S CRAZYYYYYY
Somehow i got teary eyed at the end of the video, with GG's 'Into the New World playing in the background'. KPOP really have come so far
4:15 the editing in this specific part gave me the chills
The young me that used to listen 2nd Gen K-pop alone in his bedroom would be very happy to know that many people would join him in this love for this music style. This video made me cry a little 😅
OMG YOU'RE BACK?!? i missed your videos so much, this one is amazing, it's crazy how you managed to explain the history of k-pop in just an 11 minute video, and the editing is amazing as always, the wait is always worth if it's your videos, always high quality and fun to see 😭💗
this video is iconic
this is the most well made video about kpop ive ever watched…the song choice for the outro nearly made me tear up lol
the hyper slow version of "into the new world" playing at the end is so eerie and melancholy
incredible editing as usual
also the mixing of all the songs is SO FUN
You caught me off guard ending this with SNSD's Into the New World... nicely done.
Its a good day when 2ndgenbias has a comeback
I’m a fan of K-pop since 2007/2nd gen with Wonder Girls, BoA, SNSD, KARA, 2NE1, f(x), 4minute, and others~ Seeing it evolve throughout all this time sure has been a fantastic experience. I’m still a big fan to this day even in my early 30s, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll have in store for us. Gotta mention that your video brought me nostalgia but also left me feeling hopeful for the future of K-pop. Great editing too, couldn’t stop watching it!
i wish wjsn was still included in that 3rd gen mashup - they're still "active" despite lack of comeback this year & lasted this long compared to other post ioi groups 😅
anyways i really love your editing
same. international fans always ignore them it’s so frustrating, they were very popular in sk, especially among the GP.
WOW probably one of the best kpop commentary videos I’ve ever seen great job!
