The Excelsior, Hong Kong's iconic waterfront hotel built on the very first plot of land sold during the British colonial era, has closed after 46 years.
Its owner, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, will tear down the four-star hotel and build a commercial office tower on the site.
when an employee can bring tears over the closure of her workplace, you know they've done well treating their employees. i can imagine the feeling, it's like lost of a family :(
More like crying because they have no job anymore lol
Fauzi Rahim Pohan You are heartless. It isn’t just a job after that many years. You clearly have NOT worked for 27 years at the same place of employment. Otherwise you would not have made such a thoughtless & insensitive remark. 🧐 In any case she has been offered alternative employment.
Lau Wen Han Someone doesn’t know the meaning of propaganda. 🧐
Well I've been there - being a hotel enthusiast which my entire family went to tour HK a few times - only to come to this video realizing it's now closed and I can testify that although the facility itself was dated the atmosphere and overall employees seemed the most welcoming and hospital out of all hotels I visited including Island Shangri-La and Mandarin Oriental
*made me teary eyed*
No....That's very sad....I miss this hotel so much ;_;
TOTTS was an amazing bar and had great views! Will miss this place!
Just wonder in such a high density area how they can demolish it safely. Implosion must be handled very carefully!
Redevelopment isn't knocking it down
@@davidbalmer1 They already mentioned a rebuild.
So what going to be happened the employees of this hotel
If you on caption . he was once a smoke it
_"The saddest farewells are very often the most beautiful farewells. Because it means that everything that has gone on before has been meaningful, has been deep, has been worthwhile."_
Such a nice quote!
Haoto - Anime on Piano made me cry.
never been to HK but the closure of this place makes me sad. I wonder how the employees are takin it... 🤔
The hotel management office have provided them with other jobs. They took it responsively.
@@jonathanng5218 are you part of the management bot that automatically answers people's question. I have read your answer somewhere else.
@@tronghuoa1437 dafuq? I just copied and pasted my answer so I don't have to type again lol
Lol
No... I keep seeing this hotel whenever the bus I'm on passes by... Even when I was in high school.. This was the hotel I think of whenever I think of Stan Lee as well.. Both are gone..
nightwng may i ask. Who is stan lee
Marvels creator
@@MsPusa25 the creator of Marvel comics. Without him there won't be spiderman, ant-man, nick fury and etc. He's one of the sole reason why we have Marvel Avengers. Excelsior is his favourite word.
sklush tea oh yeah o yeah i forgot my bad 🤗 tenks
I've had many great nights and parties at the Excelsior. I even celebrated my 40th birthday there. I'll miss Wendy and the live band at Totts the most. Farewell Excelsior...thanks for the memories!
Ok
It is sad decision eventhough I never been there 🙄 but it is Hongkong, they have limited space....😞
Polyglot Gamer
Its all about money..
No im living in hong kong and citizen of it and hong kong dont have space to make house and the house are too small and its so expensive to buy a home no space to do anything, Droping 2020 in.......
Polyglot Gamer why not remodel instead knock it down, save lot money n environment?
They got a ton of space in new territories and other rural parts it's only poor land management that led you believe it's a crowded city and its intentional because of the housing market income
@@trinhcuong-vy7tq not sure, but a country like Singapore also doing it. The citizen said sometimes it's because the building was too old or a lot of bugs. But this hotel, I'm not sure it is torn down because of those reasons. Probably money or whatever politics inside the management level or something 😞
I had tears though I've never been to HK. And sad that everyone has to lose job.
Management company has provided them with other jobs. They took it responsively.
Well everything has to go at one point and i guess its now this hotels turn
They could just reuse the structure instead of demolishing the gorgeous structure
It a hotel. They not using for a room or something. They doing a commercial office thing
Woah, is it consider great hotel? It seemingly such a nice place to stay, based on the insight !
I remember ever since I was 5 to recently. Everytime we would go to this korean barbeque and pass by this hotel everytime, I didn't know why but I just broke down *hard* when I heard this, in some way, I grew up with this place and I'm sad to see it go.
There was a spirit in that building both inside and out. Can relate. So sad to know I can't make a second visit ever again, but that's life I guess, can't expect one thing to last forever during your short lifespan
Its the end of an era.
All the traces of British rule are being washed away....
no way, I'm shocked by this.
Nothing lasts forever.
Cherish everything and everyone you have today for it won't be there tomorrow.. including ourselves!
We can change the future
3:25 Bye😢
Legit sad over this. Causeway Bay will never be the same! 💔
I passed by there once. it looked like a place for wealthy people.
This will be hard the hotel is gonna be demolished and the workers has to find another job and it's hard
Sighh my first prom night i brought my first love to here.. and now we are married but this hotel will be gone 😭😭
We used to frequent Excelsior when we lived in Hong Kong a while back and Im sad because I hadnt come back since ~2014
Used to work for Emirates airlines and used to stay in this hotel on our layovers.. Loved it and have beautiful souvenirs they gave us - piggy bank in a shape of the hotel. Always loved staying there, and just today I found out it's closed.. Will never forget it.. ❤
Such a luxurious hotel
Had many great times in the Excelsior over the years. The original layout of the Dickens Bar downstairs was brilliant. Such a buzzing place. And in the lobby, you would always see endless airline crews coming and going. It was a real hub for travellers.
I'm surprised that it didn't cause any "heated online discussion on chinese social media"
Lol
Lol, I know what you mean
Can't debate online. That's - 25 social credits
Why not renovate it?
Peninsula Hotel opened on 11 Dec 1928 and it is still a hotel.
Very true! You dont see the Peninsula saying 'all things must end.' I was expecting them to say that a new Excelsior would eventually open in the new tower - but obviously the accountants worked out it is easier to just walk away with the cash, rather than reinvest.
the peninsula-manila was rebuilt on september 1976..konti na lang mag 50 years na sya..gigibain ulit
Oh no..... I love this hotel...... one of the earliest memory of HK for me.... My last stay was last October to celebrate my son 5th birthday in Disneyland, we stay in Excelsior and spend the whole day inside because of typhoon approaching, had really fun time.... fond memories we will cherries forever
Business man, all about money. It'll be sentimental not seeing it, ive been going to hk seeing new buildings all the time, thought this one stays
I was always in that building when I was in HongKong. Can't believe they will shut down 😐
This makes me miss the hotel even more. Last time I visited Hong kong in january 2019, I stayed in excelsior hotel. But yesterday when I saw the news about the closure, it made me sad to say goodbye to this hotel, cause everytime I went to Hong kong, I always stay at that hotel, like everytime i visited hk. Plus with a great location. Also this place is where I celebrated new years with my family when we were at hong kong. But life must go on, thank you for all of your services Excelsior, we will miss it. 😔 😃 🙏
Sad to see a iconic building gone forever
My mum worked there as the Director of Rooms, she was sad to see it go.
Nooo... This brought tears :(
Isn't it up to the company hotel group to make the final decision? They choose the more profitable greedy way!
Armstrong Chan Can you blame them? They’re investors not charities.
I wonder why many place in hongkong are closing. All of that place are full with memories and history, long before hongkong is success like now. It's so sad 😥😥😥.
That's how corporations run businesses. It's all about dollars and cents. While sentiments may in some cases deserve consideration as part of decision making, they carry little weight and are never the decisive factor.
this clip made me into tears for some reason because when i look at hotels i always remember the hotel i used to work... raffles hotel singapore. great hotel with great people..
Many childhood memories here! Sad it's going :(
Thing like this always saddening. My memory fondly go back to 1996, when I was privileged to stay for a few days at this elegant hotel.
Press F to Pay Respects to this hotel.

Why does nobody raise the issue to preserve such historical building? 40+ years building should have a mark in the history of Hongkong which means something for the community rather than a handful of modern developement.
O wait... That manager and hr lady have been with that hotel for 25 n 27 yrs... They dont look like they are around 50 !!!🤔🤔🤔🤔
She only looked mid-thirties at best!
It is very sad. When i was teenager, and still enjoy travelling with my parent, sometimes we decided to spend few days in this hotel when we visit hong kong. It is very sad to know that this hotel finally close forever, without me having shot to spend few more nights. Building can be renovated, space programing & function can be changed, but memories are forever. Love from indonesia.
😥😭
She works there for 27 years??. But she looks like 35..lol.
49 years old Asian looks like 35 it’s pretty common
I'm 63 and l look like 43. Better find a new wife. Time to move on. 😹😹😻🙊
Asian women age well in general.
I once met an asian nurse that looked like she's on her 30s,but she was 51 years old. Wow
David Wan : their husbands treat them well in general.
Replaced with an office block? How boring. I guess $$$$$$ talks.
they are sad because the hotel is closing
but has anyone thought for those that lost their jobs when it closed?
I hate goodbyes!!!
All things must pass. The most important thing is to reopen the Dickens Bar at the basement of the new building, that's critical!
Excelsior isn't just another hotel. It's history and history is being eroded away.
First time I visited HGK 1975 ….. I was staying there for several days ….. fond memories of that legendary hotel …. “THE EXCELSIOR”
The witness of great world leader
This my 1st hotel when I visited hk. I love the hospitality in this hotel, to bad to hear that you must closed
It's closing in honor of Stan Lee who died. The hotel name is his catchphrase.
It's a wonderful Hotel. Luckily I have been there last Christmas and taken some video clips.
So many memories. Used to go there for lunch buffet on the weekends with my mom.
Sad i stayed in this hotel when i was younger
My very first foreign travel from my country was to Hong Kong and I stayed 3 weeks in this hotel in 1989. My first and last stay there and it feels like yesterday. I will always cherish the experience in my heart 💞😙💞.
It seems East Asians just like change. They call it 'moving on'. It's different here in Europe thank goodness.
Stayed here 1995 before going on to Bali. Beautiful hotel...very sad its gone.
Why tear it down when they can make it into a homeless shelter?
w23857980 but they want to make profit...
Instead of tearing down the hotel, they should convert it into public housing.
Everything has a start and a end
I missing this hotel which a landmark on Causeway Bay in Hong Kong island!Although it's sorrow but happiness for this ghost story continues!
So sad to see that 😭
Sooo sad i stayes her with my parents when visiting hk
First hotel I stayed in HK back in 1987 and for the next few years. Thanks to my bank. Loved their fish and chips. 😋
Thanks for the memories.
:(
Wait...does this mean my booked holiday for two weeks in this hotel in July won't happen now? 😭
Don't worry they'll reopen just for u.
Why is it closing down though ?
Ooh so sad 😔 great hotel
Crying watching this
Very sad to see it go. 😪
Jeez.
Ccp
Hope the New building hotel will even better than now!.... Its just 5 year to renovate kinda long!
hyou zan ren not renovate but broken down and rebuilt into office building. So hotel building will be gone forever.
Tears
They didnt even sing to the moon before they said goodbye. 😔🌛
臨結業前幾個多,員工無心恋戰。管理亂得像雞欄收市般。晚節不保,衰收尾!
so sad ... I loved the Excelsior... our home away from home in the 80 for couple of years... we went back for a short visit in the 2015 ... still love it then too 💝 farewell 🥰
This is very sad, Excelsior would always remind me of happier times during my childhood with my parents since the very first time we stayed there 1979 until my last way back 2004. Goodbye Excelsior Hotel Causeway Bay. 😫😫😫
Ah, so it's all about $$$$
They could keep this hotel running if they want. It's all about decision.
In my country, a big cigarette factory still use manual human employees instead of machine. The CEO said that machine would be cheaper but there would be twenty thousands people lost their job. And they still make billions profit
All lifes will start an end at a certain time but for a building is a different story - like the Taj Mahal - many in UK/NY etc/The Majestic Hotel in Malaysia/so many in UK .
I live at a place that can see the Excelsior everyday... so not used to the lights going off. And now the building is going down.. I wonder whats behind it XD
I have been a regular for 25 years, so it’s very sad to see it go😢
As a side note though , my first and possible most people’s experience of the excelsior (though they may not have realised or recognised it) is in the great 1978 Peter Sellers movie revenge of the pink panther!😁😂
I have been to hkong twice. Basically they want more office space n high rise buildings. More space, more money and more profits. Hopefullyw the best safety features!
This was the very first hotel we stayed in Hongkong. Watching this brought back so much memories. I feel sad of closing your operations.
So much sadness for this hotel, how about public housing? Not enough sadness for those who live in literal cage homes in Hong Kong though.
I'm heartbroken. I used to pass by the Excelsior nearly every weekend. HK will not be the same without it.
Entire team will lose der job still they put a bright smile....that's for sure an A TEAM.
Money is all that matters to this owners! they dont care about anything but money!
0:48 27yrs? miss how old are you? you just look like in your early 30s
Like Life itself.Regardless..it moves on,repairing itself,reinventing...and so on
关门大吉
What happen...this iconic hotel is national treasure in hongkong.....so sad
i stayed there 20 years ago and i had the best fish and chips ive every had in the bar there
