I had 3 Raleigh Torus titaniums but I only paid for one! I had the blue painted original in 1992 and rode it like crazy. I think it was about 1996/7 that I discovered a crack in the seat tube/top tube junction. The Raleigh lifetime guarantee kicked in! I went to Cliff Pratt Cycles in Hull on a Saturday and handed over the frame. I went back the Saturday after and picked up a new frame which looks exactly the same as the one in this video. In about 1999, another crack, this time in the seat tube to BB joint. Another new frame! This time with disc tabs on the rear. But after such a 'cracking' time on Raleigh titanium it was sold on.
Nice video. I've still got a Raleigh Special Products hardtail myself, and had a few different titanium bonded m-trax/ dyna-techs back in the day. Raleigh stopped the bonded tubes after 1995. The old dyna-techs used to pull apart at the bond; I worked in a Raleigh shop back in the day, the M-Trax were much more reliable in that reguard. Your bike looks just like the 1997 M-Trax Elite 400 Titanium, except for the riveted cable guides? Nice bike, perfect build, enjoy.
Keep those handlebars on, it's like they're made for the bike. Just my opinion. Really like the build you've done +would like to see more projects, I can't get enough of that retro 👌
They do suit it really well - might need an update video though! Thanks so much for the comment! As soon as my fractured metatarsal is healed I’ll be back out on the bike with some more videos planned!
I am just building a RSP 600 titanium I think from 1999, stripped of blue and yellow paint. So interesting to see your build. I am looking for lightish weight so fitting carbon rigid forks and mavic crossrider with XT 9 speed GS. I shall have to look at your other bikes.
Great video Tom. I have just started building a Polished Raleigh Titanium torus. Using pace rc38 forks. Mainly xtr 9 speed running gear. With hope wheels and xtr hydraulic brakes
I had a Raleigh max. Oversized frame . All grey but I put a red tyre in it. 21 speed. I had from 96ish but was stolen from my garage .Beautiful bike . I had modded it. I found the local thief and the bike. Jed scratched off my postcode name & house no, but I’d scratched my name under the handlebar grip . It had the red and grey tyre and the bike had its pink drink holder . Awesome bike. Police came, looked at but said U couldn’t prove it was mine. I’d reported it, at that time given them pics and you could make out some if postcode. Police let him walk away without confiscating it to at least examine it . I complained and was warned to leave it or I’ll be in trouble .I put deposit down when I purchased it and was paying in HP. My late paid it off in secret. I only ever paid the deposits + lights, bar ends and D lock +security engraving 🥸. I just can not find a pic of one . I got almost 40 mph flying down past rugby cement one evening rugby .
Great story! We have a FB group for old Rqleigh Dynatechs wthsome of the original Raleigh workers in the group, they could help identify it! You should track another one down!
Goddamn that's a sweet ride. First bike I ever really mountain biked on properly was a spectacularly under-maintained Raleigh Activator 18, with the synchro shock that never, ever moved even a mm 😅. That's a class build you've done there, especially compared to thay fail singlespeed setup it had when you got it.
Nice, I still have my 2003 Rayleigh Manta Ray that I have had since new. One of the last to made in Nottingham. So yeah but I been having an issue with the back v brake pads binding still a bit but slowly getting there with it getting better.
Fantastic but that bike deserve a org Crossmax wheelset(1400-1500g) and a more sleeker stem to fit more with the sleek ti frame, preferable in ti as well :P But yeah, very nice build indeed.
Sweet bike! I wish I had the means and the know-how to do a personalized build like that. Were those Billy Bonkers difficult at all to get mounted on those old school rims? I just recently purchased a set of Maxxis Pace foldable tires for a '00 bike/stock rims and they were a nightmare not only getting them on the rims but seated properly. I was unable to get them just right so they were wobbly and out of true. So I took it to REI (local bike shops were closed that day) and they couldn't get them seated right either. I was looking at getting a set of those Billy Bonkers in the hope that they would be a bit easier to work with.
Nice that... is it 100% a torus? I thought their cables ran down the side of the top tube? And they had a canti mount at rear too.. mine does anyway.. perhaps mines an earlier one.. regardless its a nice ti build that :-)
@@Tomridesandruns these are very special and you gave it a second and great life :) I've got a 95 CrMo Marin bobcat trail, changed the bb to hollowtech II, 1x7,new cables and shifter and xt v-brakes and love it

That’s awesome cheers it’s lovely to hear about these stories from the 90s!
nice original clean ride

Haha thanks!
Excelent bike. It has more character than a modern bike.
Thankyou mate
That upgraded Raleigh road bike looks amazing!
Thankyou so much. She’s a keeper!
Great build the xlite stem is gorgeous. 90s Mtbs were so nice to look at with the high seatpost and long stem.
Great video Tom, always loved the Pace forks on that build. One of the best Torus builds currently.
Thanks so much Martyn
Just superb ...

Cool wheels Tom. Very cool.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info on retro decals

Rat trap pedals ! I've lost some considerable leg skin to those as a young person long ago .

Nice find and build... a gem from a time before China's mass (low quality) production.
Keren banget,...👍
Hey i got a Raleigh a M-400 in the original condition from factory everything it's stock from 1998 . It that's a good bike? She's a mountain bike

Uuuu pace RC 36 Gold Titanium limited edition forks.
If you still have that old crankset, let me know. I need it. Missing half and need the non-drive arm, but will buy the whole set.
Sorry bud, it’s gone.
Cracking
