It was a a great idea to put these two species together. Stops the orangutans getting bored and depressed. And gives the otters a non threatening predator figure to keep them busy too.
@@thegreywanderer8427 The Orang is gentle and have no intention to harm the otters. But otters are predators and if they view the Orang as food, that would be dangerous. Otters are fierce predators and work together. Luckily, this Orang is able to protect himself/herself.
@@benthekeeshond545Definitely. Playful + predatory = attacks for fun. Of course this can easily come out in play fights, or playing with toys, just look at dogs, but otters are very dangerous to smaller animals, even those they don't want to eat. The orangutan is too big, they would never try to go after one. Otters are also very curious, and confident. This is the reason they had the chance to get to know the orangutan, and likely have developed a real bond. It's just like humans with cats.
the story behind this is that the orang utans where always playing games with visitors and where enjoing human interactions. After the pandemic hit and the zoo was closed they became depressed and stopped eating. One of the zoo keepers then created a river to connect the neighbouring otters with the orang utans. This was the start of a great never before seen friendship between the two species and the monkeys found their joy of life again.

Great to see some additional footage of the otters and Orangutan (I footget his name) and Mathew's 'experiment'. Life seems to be good at the Belgium zoo.
The orangutan is a primate, that is, the same order to which humans also belong. So it is particularly intelligent as you can see in the video. And in this, otters can never compete with it. Yet they interact. But the video is interesting because it captures a game, a competition to grab a blanket, chasing each other, a game that strangely attracts and entertains the 2 very different races. Whoever faced these animals, allowing them to interact, is absolutely a genius (if it didn't happen by chance).
I knew I recognised that place. It's in Pairi Daiza, Belgium, about 40 min from where I live and I used to live closer. I went there several times and it's an amazing zoo. I'd recommend visiting if you're close.
I have a feeling that one day, after the zoo closed for the day, that orangutan finally got a hold of one of those otters and threw him like a 50-yard touchdown pass.

Love the way the otters move in unison, like some well-trained military unit.
Well they Marine mammals lol. Pretty sure I heard one screaming OORAH.
This clean-shaven Scot has to keep his kilt on at all times to prevent otters from stealing it.

its so funny, i loved when he was hanging and was just teasing them with the blanket lol.... hilarious
I bet they wind each other up all day everyday 🤣
Otters and orangutans are an awesome combination, they seem to get along so well.
Meanwhile the orangutan thinking: "You f**king little shits!"
It's because orangutans are so gentle and loving & the otters are able to understand that, being highly social and playful themselves.
