For anyone wondering, 17-2 is the actual record in elimination games, one loss to the 1958 hawks and another to the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers (an all time team).
Bill Russell's accomplishments are notable not only for his success as a player, exemplified by his 11 championships, but also for his resolute stand against the racism that was prevalent both inside and outside the league at the time. He is also credited with his work as a civil rights activist who improved the status of African American athletes. It's amazing that most of the players who helped the Celtics win 11 championships from the late 1950s to the 1960s are in the Hall of Fame.
The nba fans continue to do a disservice to Russell because no one truly looks into jist how impactful that man was to the game in his time as well as how big of an imprint his game has one the evolution of BOTH ends of the ball. His versatility in an era where most bigs (including wilt) just parked in the paint and swatted anyone that opposed them at the cup. Russell was chasing guards around on the perimeter, as we as guarding bigs. He was saving loose balls, tipping his blocks back in bounds to stealing teamates, grabbing boards and taking it coast to coast as a BIGMAN back then, he was their secondary and sometimes main facilitator in the offense kind of like draymond today, his technique was great as a rim rote for toe to where he would use his off hand to poke at the ball if the defender up faked before shooting. So eityer he’d block it with one hands or rip it out with the other. He sued his length well and rarely got overpowered even tho he was giving up 30-70 lbs on bigger centers like wilt due to understanding leverage and timing. U can credit a lot of modern styles to bill and red Auerbach. As well as the fact that he is and always will be the gold standard for building real team chemistry and a system around your star players talents instead of just throwing guys together. Also, his athleticism need to be talked about a lot more. The man was a FREAK athlete at his size as well but gets overshadowed by wilt. Nearly made the Olympics for the high jump with a PR of 6 ft 9 and had great speed as well. There’s so much that doesn’t get talked about with hill because everyone chalks his success up to his teammates and the era without providing proper context as to what made them so good in the first place.
@@Tomtainius To be fair, Wilt was a monster with regard to that D too, he averaged 8.8 blocks a game from 112 games of data. For reference, Bill averaged 8.1
@@Tomtainius they both had spectacular D for the situations calling for it. Russell’s shot blocking saved many games while Wilt’s D satisfied many lives outside of the court…..
Actually bill was around 6ft10 barefoot, slightly taller than Dwight howard...and he was 215 pre season to his rookie year...he eventually filled out to about 235 in the early 60s...even stating himslef that he got as heavy as 240...russell would probably be listed at 6ft11 235ibs (maybe even more to modern day strength training)...
1:40 compare the dribbling ability to today's guys though (Kyrie, Luka, even your average guard or a college guard) and the layups some of these guys from back in the day are throwing up. Is it just me, or are these guys trying to get blocked 😂. Obviously not, but I think today's players create way better space on their shots with reverse layups and such, so basing this case on bills stats when the eye test doesn't do it for me is dubious to say the least. Great defender and would be a beast with today's training technology for sure, but it's hard for me to agree that he's the best defender of all time (especially compared to guys like Vic and Chet who are on the come up and can, at their peak potential, defend any player 1-5).
*I have him between 6th and 9th all time because I think Kareem, Shaq, Duncan, Hakeem and even Ewing would give him issues in the 90's....and he DEFINITELY wouldn't win 8 straight in the Jordan era 😂 but its a shame we'll never know* 😭
Can you do a video on gus honey comb johnson as well...the "wilt chamberlain archive" has footage of him going stupid...6ft6 barefoot and filled out to 250 ibs at his heaviest...he was the 60s LeBron
Also theres an Article on qoura comparing the athleticism between russell and Giannis...its by the submitter named "redeemed" look up "whos more athletic giannis or bill Russell"
215 was his rookie/college weight, he was around 230 pounds during his prime. BBALL reference is not a source it was never around until around the 2000s
Um bill lost 2 elimatiom games
One againist bob petit and 1 againist wilt…
Yeah my bad I shouldve said winner take all games

obviously bro lost an elimination game he didn’t win a chip every single year
But that still doesn't take away his monumental achievement of winning 11 rings.
@@a3per818 I love how this correction is still a ridiculous statline. Bro was only eliminated from the playoffs twice. It's crazy.
Also imagine having such a fire nickname as the lord of the rings
literally the coldest nickname of all time
He earned 🔥 nickname

Bill Russell did so much for a city that largely hated him for his political stances. A real legend
