Sports statistics are usually misleading if taken by themselves without actually watching. I say that as someone who was inspired to take statistics in high school after watching the movie Moneyball and have taken 9 or 10 statistics courses since then.

He won back to back titles in college, then an Olympic gold medal, then a ring his rookie season. He literally changed the way basketball was played defensively. He is the greatest.
And Bill did ALL of this? Without...steroids. And Nate Thurmond was a monster! Actually, he was about as much a beast (bodywise) as Lebron is/was.But one thing I can say about Bill Russell, he was Tim Duncan before Duncan. Ultimate team player, extremely consistent, proficient and efficient and didn't need the numbers to validate his effectiveness to his team's success. Hence: Titles!
“ a lot of people say it if I was on the Celtics I would have 13 rings but that’s not true, I was not able to elevate my team like Bill and demanded too much attention to allow another player to reach their full potential”- Wilt Chamberlain
I’ve played nba 2k for roughly 5 years and my “go-to” builds were always based off classical era players, primarily Wilt, Bill, Kareem, and have constantly dominated park against these newer era builds. I know it’s just a video game but it gives a glimpse of how these classic players skills’ translate through the ages. On a side note my favorite thing about Bill Russell is... not only his ability to block a shot but also maintain possession and move it up the court without thinking... he hardly went for those “showtime” blocks that go flying 12 rows into the stands, he was focused on winning.
As a Celtic fan I know Russell is a true legend , incredible winner and really interesting to listen to. He has to be included in greatest ever list ....I love wilt too who was a idol of mine As a kid in early 70s

Wilt NEVER led his team in rebounds and points at the same time while winning an NBA Finals, unlike the genius Russell. That's because Russell's scoring helped his team, Wilt's team had a 22-30 playoff record during his 7 scoring title seasons
People always say his era was weak. Years from now people will say the same thing about Jordan and even more years later they will say the same about lebron. That’s just how it works...
I don’t understand why people have any center over Bill -More MVPs -More rings -More Finals MVPs -Best player to elevate a team -Elite defender and rebounder
People want to hold Bill's era against him. A 6'11" player with that kind of Athleticism, durability and that 48" vertical would be dominant in any era. Especially considering the coaching and refined training these athletes get today. Not to mention it is all proportional anyways. These are the players that paved the way for the greats that followed.

Another great video, keep them coming man, watching basketball a love story I've also changed my mind about this Era of. The league, these guys were amazing
Are you going to do one on Larry Bird? He is easily the most underrated player to get the GOAT title. Also. Bill is a great center who deserves more respect. He's an awesome player.
@@jonnyarnett Also. Sorry to bother you. But, I find it refreshing how you respond to comments. And especially as quickly as you do. That's awesome. Thanks for your time
To anybody who thinks it’s easy only having one playoff round for 9 seasons: If MJ or Lebron got a ring every time they made it past the first round for their first 9 seasons, how many rings would they have?
This was so excellent. I don't know why this man is so disrespected . I believe he was the greatest defensive player of all time. Thank you for also mentioning that he played in a league with only 8 teams. So many ignore his greatness because of that no realizing that with less teams your competition is much tougher and your going up against great teams every night. There's only 4 players on Mount Rushmore and there names are Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabber and Michael Jordan
Even as a scorer, he was underrated. His scoring average in the 5 NBA Finals Game 7's he played in was 20.4 ppg, which was actually MORE than what both Kareem and Wilt scored in all their Finals Game 7's (they averaged over 19.7 and 19.5 respectively), while not winning every one of them like Bill did. In fact, counting all the postseason Game 7's he played in, Bill Russell averaged a solid 18.6 ppg in the 10 Game 7's of his playoff career (he actually averaged an even 20 ppg if you don't count his last Game 7 in 1969 where he scored 6 points vs. Wilt but the Celtics won). And Russell famously went 10-0 in these 10 Game 7's, including 5-0 in the Finals. Also, we immediately assume that Wilt was a dominating scorer, and that was true - for the first part of his career when he was with the Philadelphia and then San Francisco Warriors. He averaged about 39-40 points for those years. But when he became a Philadelphia 76er and then a Los Angeles Laker and he started playing more winning basketball, Wilt's average for those season was no more than 19.8 ppg. In fact, Bill Russell's career playoff scoring average of 16.2 ppg is HIGHER than Wilt Chamberlain's career playoff scoring average of 15.8 ppg if you count only his record as a Laker. We also consider how Russell really delivered in the playoffs, even from the offensive end, as compared to Wilt. The most successful period of Russel's career was obviously the 8-peat between 1959 to 1966. His career playoff scoring average during this eight-year stretch was 18.3 ppg. On the other hand, Wilt's most successful stretch from the point of view of team success was his final 7 years (1966-67 to 1972-73) when he won his two championships, plus also made 3 other Finals. In this 7-year stretch, Chamberlain actually averaged 17.6 ppg, which is surprisingly LESS than Bill Russell's comparative average. If you add 1 more season to match Russell's 8-year stretch, then that would be the 1965-66 season, when Wilt's team for the first time had the best record in the season (though they again lost in playoffs). For these 8 straight years when Chamberlain had his best record as a winning player, his playoff scoring average was an even 18.0 ppg, still less than Bill Russell's mark. This may be incredible to some, but that's what the record says. Also, detractors point out Bill's subpar 44% career field goal percentage to argue why he simply cannot be a candidate for the goat. But they forget that when Russell entered the league in 1956, there were few players who even shot 40% or better in the league. And in fact, in his first 4 seasons in the league, Russell was in the top 5 in field goal percentage. Food for thought. Many also know that Wilt once led league in assists. But Russell's career 4.3 apg nearly matches Wilt's 4.4 apg. And Russell was 12 times in the Top 20 for the season in assists, which beats Wilt 7 times in the Top 20 (both were 4x in the Top 10). Plus Bill's 4.7 apg in playoffs actually tops Wilt's 4.2 apg in the postseason. As expected. So if anything, Russell is actually underrated as an offensive player! And add that factor to his unparalleled defense and leadership, his tremendous rebounding, and his matchless record as a winner, and it is clear that Russell has a VERY good case to be named the greatest player of all time. Now would that really matter to Bill? Maybe not. He might be the type not to insist that he was the greatest ever, but instead, the greatest winner ever and also, that "I am Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics, the greatest team ever. Basketball is a team game."
I heard it said about 25 years ago that there were three players in NBA history who could affect the outcome of a Finals game without scoring a point: Bill Russell, Magic Johnson, and Dennis Rodman. I'm trying really hard to think of a fourth since then.
He also stood with Dr. King... and is to this day a fierce activist for racial equality. The man is to basketball what Ali is to boxing. Ask Iron Mike who the (boxing) goat is and he'll tell you without hesitation, hands down, "it's Muhammad Ali." When it comes to the game of basketball (TEAMWORK) that person is William Felton Russell; Aka Bill Russell; Aka "The GOAT!"
Hi, i discovered you channel recently and i like it. I believe Russell is pretty underrated and disrespectful. The thing is, the people always try to discredit Russell's legacy because of the 60's were a "weak era" of he has " a lot of hall of famers" in his team, but in my perspective, Russell is one of the greats because he was so dominant on his way that the league have to be better, bigger, faster and talented (in matter of teams number) to stop this phenom. Russell's 11 rings made the other franchises try to compete harder, forced the NBA to expanded, put players in a situation that they have to prepare better to compete agaisnt this. The NBA evolutionated into a better league with a better competition because legends (like Mikan, Russell, Robertson, West Baylor, Wilt, Kareem, Dr. J, Moses, and the others that you already know) made the game looked so easy that they inspired the kids and their competition to be tougher and better if they want to survive in the league.
Thank you for pointing out that fewer teams meant more concentrated talent! This is simple math. If you are playing against Hall of Fame talent almost every night, you are having much more difficult opposition. My final vote is for Wilt, but Russell easily gets the silver and barely misses the gold.
But they also had most of the talent. Bob Cousy was literally the best guard in the league at the time. He also had Don Nelson later on. For 12/13 seasons Bill’s Celtics had 7-9 all-star/HOFers. It’s like KD joining the 73-win Warriors, along with Lillard, Paul George, and Bradley Beal, they would never lose. And Bill wasn’t even their main guy on offense, he averaged 15 pts and can’t make a free throw. And he played against players that didn’t even know you can block shots or knew what a fast break was. That was during a time of slow and low, low as in skills. It was simply not competitive and teams weren’t balanced. Celtics literally was gifted the #2 overall pick to draft Bill, but they were also #2 seed in the East. That would never happen today lol, wth? Also the season was shorter, so was the playoffs, you literally start in the semi-finals. Think about all the injuries and fatigue that would happen for bigs. And this was also pre-merger, it’s just not comparable to the modern NBA.
@@sganet_ They only made it to the semifinals if they won the conference in the regular season, and for most of Russell's career, the regular season was 80-82 games. Re: HOF talent, go check the Wikipedia page for his Finals, and see how many HOF players were on the other team. Re: offense, he didn't have to be a big offensive weapon, because he was the greatest defensive player ever. Re: "slow and low," this just shows your ignorance and recency bias. In that era, teams were running up and down the court, with nearly every drive a fast break. And Russell averaged 45 mpg. That requires a lot more stamina than you see today. You apparently think that practice footage from the 1950s was game footage in the 1960s.
Another fact about Russell: Of the 20 teams with the best adjusted defensive ratings of all-time, 9 were teams led by Bill Russell, 5 of which are in the top 10, and 4 of those 5 teams are in the top 5.
11x Champion 2x NCAA champion 2x NCAA tournament mvp 12x All Star ⭐️ 1956 🇺🇸 🥇 5x League MVP 4x led the NBA in rebounds 40 rebounds in a playoff game 50th Anniversary Team (1997) Never lost a playoff series game seven And the postseason MVP trophy bears his name
Ahh nigga please he had 9 hof playing with + 8 team back then . Switch wilt & bill on each other team wilt with boston shit 18 rings bill on philly 00000 rings so stop it respect bill but he play with 9 hof
@@terrenceperkins5282 probably not Wilt was also a selfish player. Wilt often said that Russel was the better team player even though he was more athletic.
Man molded the nba give uhm his respect I mean I’m not saying he’s thee best but I think many athletes are good like him but just don’t forget we’re the critiques you ain’t the one that put the heart sweat and tears into the game they did ,and in an era when blacks where still frowned upon by the whites
What he says from 8:11 on is what i think sets Russell apart from all the other all time greats. Stick him on any team and he would elevate his teammates by helping them play to their strengths and cover for their weaknesses.
@@coreythomas3633only Havlicek, Cousy and Sam Jones deserved to be in the HOF, fr. And they didnt even play their best years together. John best years were after Russell retired.
If Bill Russell averaged 40 points a game and won 11 titles there would be no debate at all...so why should there be because he did it with defense and rebounding instead...absolute GOAT for me.
Finals Mvp is called Bill Russell FMVP but he never won it and never even got a chance, i think he got a chance when west won it on a losing team, only that time i think
Great video just wished u went into how he beat 68 Lakers West n Baylor in 6 games they added Wilt in 69 n Russell n Celtics defeated them in 7!!! Which threw Wilt and all his excuses why Bill won so much out the window and out Goat discussion for me
And to add to your points, they didn’t have a three point line back then so people likely clogged the paint, making it even harder for bill and wilt to score
Bill was the "MAIN"reason celtics won 11 rings the fast break started with him rebounding and block shots bill is a goat and celtics greatest player but some will say bird bird's defense didn't come close
Definitely I agree with your points, even though celtics had HOFers none of them were as great as bill. Extremely clutch and he is in my mind without a question the greatest defensive players ever. The only person who I would compare him as the greatest defensive player ever would be hakeem olajuwon
I’ve heard several places that in his prime Willis Reed outplayed both Russell and Chamberlain on a regular basis. Not saying he was better, but that he matched up against them well. Anyone else here that?
If rings doesn't mean everything, then tell me why the Warriors record is tarnished by the Bulls winning a championship the year they broke the winning record? Just cuz LeBron only won 3(should've just been 2)doesn't mean you have to say crazy stuff like that😂
Well, primarily in the sense that reidhead decent range on his jumper. He can shoot pretty comfortably out to bus 17 ft. And Russell and Chamberlain did prefer to stay around the lane so they could utilize their best abilities in rebounding and defense. Actually one guy who gave them more trouble I think even more than Reed, was Nate Thurmond. He had the height at 6'11, the reach and the defensive and rebounding instincts that Russell & Wilt had.
Disclosure…..I grew up watching Bill Russell play. And even though I grew up in San Francisco, Bill was my favorite player. That being said, I would not call Bill the GOAT. Jordan and Wilt are 1 and 1A. But Bill is, unquestionably, the greatest winner in basketball history and, talking in terms of basketball intelligence, was arguably the smartest player ever. Bill had an uncanny knack of knowing where the ball was going to go to best position himself for a rebound. Unlike the highlight reels of more modern basketball, where big men block shots by swatting them away as hard as possible for intimidation purposes, Bill’s blocked shots were sent to teammates to start fast breaks. While he’s not the GOAT, he certainly needs to be on everyone’s all time starting five.
The thing about the condensed league being harder argument is that once you get that group of guys thats just better than everyone else its a lot harder to knock them off. you dont have to play as many series or face as many teams to win the title, boston recieved multiple playoff byes, and the overall average SKILL of players at the time wasnt nearly as high as it is today. We’re talking about extending the 3 pt line, finding other ways to make scoring harder, and eye-test wise the players just *look* better since the 2000’s. bill russell is in fact a top 10 player of all time but he can’t be the goat simply bc of the era he was a part of
Spot on analysis about the consolidation of talent onto fewer teams and fewer roster spots. One thing that has offset that at least somewhat over the years and works the other way is population growth. A higher population means more people in the talent pool to develop into NBA players. I don't think that means there are better players in the modern game vs the 1960s, just a bit more good players. Not only that but back in the '60s, the talent pool was mainly confined to a national talent pool while it's gone pretty much global since then. So the expanded talent pool I feel would naturally somewhat mitigate the watered down effect that results from NBA expansion and more total roster spots. Maybe not all the way but part way at least.
Most people underestimate the 60's because of the small amount of teams, but more teams doesn't necessarily mean more competition. The guy was the biggest winner of all time.
And also the fact that the competition were relatively unathletic white guys. In the video, he says that height is about the same, but doesn't mention the athleticism. Today's players are way more athletic than players of the 60s and that's a proven fact
@@MrE_ bill Russel was a athletic freak just like wilt. Most of them are not athletic white guys. Why does that matter. Not everybody athletetic in the 90s or 2000s.
Russell played with four members of the NBA's Top 50 at 50 (Havlicek(won 5 rings without Havlicek) , Cousy(another 5 titles without Cousy) , Sharman(7 titles without Sharman) , and Sam Jones( didn’t become a starter or have a big role with the team until Sharman retired in in 1961) Wilt played with six members (Baylor(3 seasons and averaged 24/10 his first two seasons with Wilt), West( 5 seasons ) Greer 4 seasons) Cunningham (3 seasons ), Arizin ( 3 seasons) and Thurmond 2 seasons). And Russell's teammates from 1957 to 1969 were selected to twenty-six All-Star games, while Wilt's teammates from 1960 to 1973 were selected to twenty-four while being on the same team as Wilt.Let's never mention the supporting-cast card again with Russell and Chamberlain. Thank you.
The real and fair knock against Wilt is that he didnt rise to the occasion in the crucial games. He failed every time against Russell and Reed. Once he was with the Lakers, he clearly was on the superior team. Big part was Wilt's appalling free throws. He doesn't get a pass for it. It would be like excusing Tiger Woods for blowing majors with missed short putts. Everything counts, including the boring stuff. Wilt had the most talent, but he wasnt willing to work hard enough on himself and with the team to be a team leading winner. It only happened when he had two coaches that put the clamps on.
Good video but you need to read Russell's book 'Memoirs of an opinionated man' Russell was the greatest because he understood basketball in a way that know else did. He figured out that it was a game of horizontal and vertical lines, and that the horizontal ones were more important. He revolutionized defensive concepts, basically he was the first guy that played defense in a way that attacked the offensive player; he didn't react to what they did as much as made them do what they didn't want to do. he figured out the proper footwork and positioning for every action on the court but MOST IMPORTANTLY: He understood human psychology. He was as Tommy Heinson said famously, "the meanest player that ever lived" Get it? He vomited before every game. Thats how much pressure he put on himself to win.
Greatest defender and leader for sure I just personally think the goat should also be a scorer which is why I think Wilt is the goat. he had it all, and its seen today in the record books. If the recorded blocks he and Bill would lead those stats for sure as well.

That's because Russell's scoring helped his team, Wilt's team had a 22-30 playoff record during his 7 scoring title seasons
The shot he took at Jordan really erks me, not because I’m such a big MJ fan, but because it makes no sense. His argument is that John Paxon wouldn’t have made the team, therefore he wouldn’t have been there to make the shot... so... a better player than Paxon would have missed? Man... I think Jordan was being polite to an old man when he didn’t retort
Bill will always be the Goat to me. Best defender to ever live and his 16 DWS will never be touched. Think he averaged like 7 blocks a game in recorded games
obviously the issue wasn't them playing a bunch of "short white guys". it's more that they were playing a bunch of tall guys with no actual skills. they weren't exactly going up against a bunch of Olajuwons, tim duncans, and shaqs. they were going up against a bunch of shawn bradleys and manut bols. it used to be a thing back in the day that if you were tall, you should be playing basketball regardless of whether not you had legit skills or a basketball IQ.
Even though I’m a Sonics fan and think the Celtics are like the Cowboys of the NBA/America’s team in the NBA, I actually wouldn’t mind in the future if we got a bio pic of a movie about Bill Russell definitely one of the favorite players in NBA history. I would definitely watch it.
Just imagine if they had every modern day award and recorded stats and analytics on him. His resume would read somethig like: 1st in Win Shares 1st in Def win shares 1st all time BLKS Top 10 All time in STLS and 1st of Centers Top 2 in Triple Doubles 1st in Offensive Rebs 11x Champion 5-8x FMVP 5x MVP 5-8x DPOtY 10x All NBA 10x Def 1st Its even more impressive than Jordan's.
Not sure. I would think they would determine which one it was. Personally if a guy blocked it and then recovered it I would count it as a block and steal. A guy can miss a shot and get his own rebound and make the shot and end up with a rebound and 2 points. Moses Malone can confirm it. The good old days of blocking a shot and keeping it alive. Now days it's all show. Swatting it 10 rows into the crowd and waving your finger or making a shot and pounding your chest.
You can calculate Russell's vertical from his statement that he could get eye-level to the basket. Since he was 6'9", getting his head to the rim would be 39 inches. How much more from top of the head to his eyes? I see about 4 inches so call it 43 inches. The big thing missed is that he played high school and college ball at places with no program and he won championships. USF have never again won anything but he won 56 straight games. He did not win championships in two years from the time he was 15. 11 of 12 NBA (injured one year) 2 of 3 in NCAA and 2 state championships in high school. Oh, and the Olympics. So, he could have won 18 and he won 16. And the one he lost was to a great Wilt team. Not too bad.
Bill Russell - Smartest, most versatile, greatest leader, greatest all-around player, and greatest professional sports winner of all time. Two NCAA Championships. An Olympic Gold Medal. 11 NBA Championships in 13 years. Mike had six...Brady had seven in 20 years...not even close. Bill Russell is THE GOAT.

Wilt has never put up NBA Finals numbers, where it actually matters, as impressive as these performances by Bill Russell.
People say it's weak because anyone who really knows about this era knows due to segragat
Due to racism in America all the best N.B.A players were not in the N.B.A, Some like Wilt Chamberlain had to play with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Sone already are. Ripping Jordan's era & competition
I don’t understand why people have any center over Bill
-More MVPs
-More rings
-More Finals MVPs
-Best player to elevate a team
-Elite defender and rebounder
People want to hold Bill's era against him. A 6'11" player with that kind of Athleticism, durability and that 48" vertical would be dominant in any era. Especially considering the coaching and refined training these athletes get today. Not to mention it is all proportional anyways. These are the players that paved the way for the greats that followed.

To anybody who thinks it’s easy only having one playoff round for 9 seasons:
If MJ or Lebron got a ring every time they made it past the first round for their first 9 seasons, how many rings would they have?
you're doing a great job with this series - can't wait to see more!
Since he played in a league with 8 teams it means he had to play guys like Wilt; Pettit, and Oscar more often.
Been waitin for this. Great vid. Only complaint is that it wasn’t as long as Wilt’s, but I guess means it just took less to prove your point 🐐
So underrated
Your videos are excellent. Keep up the great work 👍. Bill Russell was phenomenal. This younger generation don't have a clue about his greatness

Bill is awesome. Good video and point of view.
You didn’t mention his clutch game 7 performances?
Your channel is the Greatest Ever basketball youtube channel bro. Your vids are fantastic.

That's video convinced me that Russel is by far the GOAT
Or u could just ask his teammates . opponents too for that matter.

he didn't die.he just transcended to become a basketball god.forever the GWOAT (greatest winner of all time).
@@sganet_ Cousy was the 3rd best guard. He just had more help than West and Oscar. The only time West had as much help was when Wilt came over.
Thanks for the upside. People needed it.
Another fact about Russell: Of the 20 teams with the best adjusted defensive ratings of all-time, 9 were teams led by Bill Russell, 5 of which are in the top 10, and 4 of those 5 teams are in the top 5.

I’ve heard several places that in his prime Willis Reed outplayed both Russell and Chamberlain on a regular basis. Not saying he was better, but that he matched up against them well. Anyone else here that?
Ring Ring Rings!! Reed only has 1. Bill has 1 too many. He's the GOAT

1:14 That pass tho
All emotions aside, bill is the greatest
out of all SUPERSTARS i would pick Bill
@ 6:30 time slot..... you mean like LeBron? 😂
We’re talking about extending the 3 pt line, finding other ways to make scoring harder, and eye-test wise the players just *look* better since the 2000’s. bill russell is in fact a top 10 player of all time but he can’t be the goat simply bc of the era he was a part of
The only case one can make against Russell is his scoring. So it seems the way to win is not be a ball hog.

I find it interesting that William Felton Russell starts with a W considering how many W’s he had on the court

@@Bu11yMagu1re he is the ultimate basketball "what if" conundrum
@@vantablack9535 Lol I can debunk the 5 most commonly recited arguments against him too.
Good video but you need to read Russell's book 'Memoirs of an opinionated man'
Russell was the greatest because he understood basketball in a way that know else did.
He was as Tommy Heinson said famously, "the meanest player that ever lived"
Get it? He vomited before every game. Thats how much pressure he put on himself to win.
Greatest defender and leader for sure I just personally think the goat should also be a scorer which is why I think Wilt is the goat. he had it all, and its seen today in the record books. If the recorded blocks he and Bill would lead those stats for sure as well.
Isak sidenius 1962 Finals - Russell dropped 23-27-6 on 54%, led his team in pts/rebs

Yeah instead of John Paxson making that shot, Reggie Miller would have lol

Andrew Cook If they counted blocks that Wilt and Russell did they would dominate it like the rebounds. They regularly blocked 10 shot games
Jerry West would be #1 in steals if it was counted
@@amorodioamor4388 Bill usually kept the blocked shot in posession. If they count that a steal its Russell, if not, West all the way.
@@amorodioamor4388 If it counts as both the amount of quad dubs they wouldve been pilling up is insane.
