    Our first home was a 1956 Great Lakes 40-foot mobile home. Basically the same layout with a little more room in the rear bedroom, kitchen, and living room. we put an air conditioner in the hallway window and expanded the bathroom into the spare bedroom by a couple of feet. We didn't feel the need to be able to sit on the toilet, soak your feet in the tub, and brush your teeth at the same time. We lived in it for about 2 1/2 years while I built our house behind it on our land.

    I was just now thinking about my aunt & uncles Great Lakes mobile home that they purchased in the early 60s and lived in until the mid 80's and so I decided to google GL mobile homes and found your video. Theirs was new when they bought it and so it was a bit different than this one. Theirs was luxurious as far as mobile homes go. They raised 4 kids in that mobile home and I spent many a night overnight there with my cousins. Now here is the huge coincidence about this video. As I was watching and the sitting room came into view the first thing my eyes latched on to was that green suitcase. My aunt and uncle had the exact same luggage. The whole set even. Thanks for the video. It helped me down memory lane a little way.

    OMG! Never thought I'd see a picture of another Great Lakes mobile home, let alone a video! It is nearly identical to our 1957 Great Lakes (we keep it at a seasonal park in Cape Vincent, NY) with a few differences. First, ours does not have the raised ceiling in the front end. We have the original sconce lamps by the front windows and you can't beat the pocket screen door. Our stove (identical) is to the right of the sink and our fridge is to the left of the pantry. Our middle room has a couple of plastic shelving units in it which give us much needed extra storage. Our bathroom tub and sink are pink but the shower plumbing is the same and the tub surround is the same black "marble" material. I think ours is slightly longer as there is a built-in vanity and dual garment closets straddling the rear window. Ours is not in nearly as good condition as this one but it's not too shabby either. Thanks for sharing!

    In 1953, my parents moved us into a brand new Great Lakes Trailer, 35 feet long, almost identical to this one. There were three boys in the family, I was 14 and that couch in the living room was where I did my sleeping. Their was a a set of bunk beds in that middle bedroom. So we had 5 people in 35 Feet. In two years we traded up to a 55 foot and we bought land to put in on.

    Will you please stop calling this a camper because it’s NOT, CAMPERS/ travel trailers have holding tanks . These old beauties were registered as House trailers that many people and small families lived in full time. They were made and designed for permanent living in “trailer parks. Not necessarily used for traveling. Only sometimes to be moved to other parks occasionally. It was very cheap and affordable housing. While some could save up to buy a sticks and bricks house wit a foundation. .these, homes weren’t made with a foundation. Hence is why it wouldn’t classify as a camper . There were no holding tanks in these trailer houses later to be called mobile homes. That’s when the ten foot wide models were coming off the assembly lines. How do I know this is because I grew up in that era.

    • @CampingTherapy
      @CampingTherapy  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your opinion Dominick. While that may be true, it is now being used as a camper. It is up to the owner to call it whatever they please.

    • @CampingTherapy
      @CampingTherapy  2 года назад +1

      @@andreamurphy1126 I titled it as a mobile home. When I'm talking, I will probably call them all campers, whether it's a 5th wheel, motorhome, or travel trailer. I call them all campers, because people are camping in them. They are being used as a camper. If that really bothers you, I apologize, but it's not going to change. If you choose to stop watching my videos, I will understand. Thanks for watching.

    • @dominickbundy6429
      @dominickbundy6429 2 года назад +1

      @@CampingTherapy You’re welcome but this is not my opinion, it is historical facts these old eight foot wide units were made to be affordable housing units to be used and lived in full time . They were registered with the DMV as trailer houses back then not campers or Rv’s . Anyone who what’s own these old beauties and wants them to be called or used as a camper. So be it. Just remember these units don’t have holding tanks for gray water and black water as most campers do. Also unfortunately they are not accepted or welcome anymore in most mobile home parks , because anyone of them that is below 16 ft wide most mobile parks won’t accept them . As well as in many areas the zoning won’t allow any trailers that’s 16 ft wide to be parked on private land either. Which in my opinion only is ashame as long as it is maintained and kept up well. I would personally love to downsize and live in a vintage house trailer on my own land but am not allowed to any more.

    • @CampingTherapy
      @CampingTherapy  2 года назад

      @@dominickbundy6429 yes, it would be awesome to live in one. I suppose you'd have to have your own land without restrictions. Many places have a 10 year rule now, even for 'campers', but I haven't encountered that yet. I met a man that's living in a 5th wheel camper at a storage lot, because he can't find an RV Park that will allow him to stay long term.
