My husband just bought one of these for me, and I'm rather new at this... I'm not the best... It came with a wick. Will that work to keep it watered? I just put it in my son's room, with the least amount of sun light, sitting on some rocks in a cover pot, with some water in the bottom of the pot, and the wick strings in the water. Is that how that works?

I wish you could see me trying to place my new plant as you were talking. I moved it away from the window to a book shelf - “ but they don’t like too little of light”- moved to to second shelf next too window -“watch out for heating cooling vents” - moves to night stand “and fan” I’ll just sweat at night. 😂😂

I have been gifted all my plants, and these have been way cool plants. Pothos, monsters, dracaena, ginny peperomia, snake plants, spider plants, wondering jews, really cool, forgiving plants. Over water, under water, light tolerant to MY locations. Kind of easy. Felt real good about keeping them alive, and decided to finally spend the money, to get some plants that I picked out. Went for my birthday, spent $200 on plants I thought looked cool, brought them home, started to do some research on them, and every plant person is like, "a list of plants I hate, I kill, are difficult" my ENTIRE haul, every single one of them! 😳😬 Now I'm super scared I'm going to kill all of them.😒 My husband actually saw a pink nerve plant at a grocery store he had to do some work on, and brought it home for me, and I was thinking low light, moist soil, at least I'll keep this one alive! 1 out of the 7 others I got, and now I'm seeing people struggle with this one too! 😣 🤞 I do well. I got beautiful Calatheas and Alocasias though, hopefully I'll have them for awhile.

    • @Gee5425
      @Gee5425 3 года назад +1

@@mentosmuncher2995 I'm actually kind of surprised, I've definitely been learning. My Alocasia dropped every single leaf after about a month month and a half, and one of my Calatheas was struggling pretty bad, so I cut both back to the stumps and left them in good light, outside in Georgia humid summers, and both have bounced back and grew more leaves. I currently have everything out on my front and back porch, and it's all doing really well. I have about another month or so before they'll need to start thinking about coming in at night, so we shall see how the winter goes, but so far I have done decent. I've gotten a lot of growth. I can't complain. I have noticed that when I had my calathea in less sun it wasn't really doing well, when I put it in basically full sun it grew, but I got a crispy leaf, so I moved it to more good medium light, and it's doing well. My Alocasia is in full sun. It has been pretty wet and humid all summer.

I have a fittonia and it’s one of my favorites and most thriving houseplants. I do the same watering technique by bottom watering. I keep mine in a cachepot with water at the bottom and the nursery pot has a cotton wick attached to the bottom and it wicks up the water whenever it’s thirsty. Soon as the water at the bottom is empty then I wait a couple of days before I fill it up again. It’s been very happy in my room that gets more gentle and filtered eastern light.

I have a pink fittonia and its doing pretty well so far. I'm in Louisiana so it's naturally very humid here, which this plant loves. I also keep the pot on top of a pebble-filled saucer so it gets humidy from the drained water that way too. It's on a north facing window under an awning so not very much light, but the leaves are standing tall and happy 😊

@@hay12347 my plant was small enough to drop in the pot with the plant...more like a cloche set up than a traditional terrarium arrangement. My plant collection is so transient, it's hard for me to commit to a permanent home for them...I like to move certain ones around a lot. I do have a large leaf Fitonia now, that I keep out in the open and give a little water, every couple of days to keep it constantly moist...a self watering pot would be ideal too, as long as u're not fighting super low humidity as well.

I looooved my big bushy fittonias! Misted them once a day and kept on top of it for about 3 months. I went away for a couple of days, and was greeted with it having a full blown meltdown! That was the point I decided to chop it down a bit and make some closed terrariums... And it has worked a treat! 6 months into the experiment and they have thrived!.... Well one out of 3 had a bit of an issue, but it's still going after some troubleshooting 😊 but I really don't regret the decision, as now I have fittonias that are basically 0 maintenance.

@@anitajones7090 Unfortunately I think mine was a little too far gone. A big issue ended up being the pot I had it in, it looked like it had a drainage hole with an attached dish, but apparently the drainage hole was completely sealed and I ended up drowning my plant basically 🙃. What little I managed to salvage from that did live for a good bit longer (after repotting of course) following tips from this video, but I had to have someone else look after it for like a week and it all went down hill again. I do want to try again, and hopefully now knowing how to take care of it properly from the get go, and starting fresh with a healthy plant, I’ll do better this time around.

It's paired in there with a polka dot and they're both doing suprisingly well. Sorry this comment is late and I hope you see it. I have a question about the fertilizing, not just this plant, but in general. I watch Planterina a lot and she recommends fish emulsion too, so I am looking into doing that. First, how often would one fertilize compared to using chemical all complete types. I already use worm castings in my soil mix, so I know that helps some, and occasionally I will top dress the plants with it later on. The other thing is chelated iron. Again, Planterina says she uses it and fish emulsion exclusively for fertilizing, but are there certain plants that need that iron or does the fish not contain iron? I wonder if you ever used it or know.

I agree with you! The secret is with the bottom water! I accidentally discovered that and guess what? It helps the plant stay alive! Just make sure it doesn't breed mosquitoes and is kept clean.

omg i laughed when i saw this was the video you posted this week, i repotted mine a few days ago and it went into absolute shock and wilted to the point i was sure i had killed it! i gave it a thorough watering and i think that made it even worse as the leaves started to absorb too much water and either went soggy or crispy, i saw on a thread on reddit someone had the same thing happen after repotting and it seems like they absolutely despise being repotted! she saved hers by making a makeshift little greenhouse with a plastic wrap cover to increase humidity and it popped back up, ive done the same with mine by just chucking a plastic seal bag over the top upside down as i dont have anything else big enough to put it in and it seems to have helped! some leaves have perked back up but others look a bit too far gone. if anyone else has repotted and their fittonia is having a bad time then i would reccomend putting it in something that can cover it to increase humidity! it didn't care about humidity before i repotted it and misting it actually seemed to make the plant worse, but when you repot it seems to need some humidity to adjust and recover the little drama queen! such a dramatic plant but i have the pink angel version and it's so pretty that i'll put up with how dramatic they are! ps harli i never usually comment and just watch and enjoy videos but i absolutely adore your videos and you have such a relaxing and calming energy and at this point you are my favourite plant youtuber. love you and your channel and congrats on the pregnancy!

I agree about the watering thing! Mine gets bone dry and is perfectly okay. But I have the red one and someone told me the white one is the most dramatic? Have you ever noticed that?

I have had mine outside for several weeks now out on my back porch. It gets early morning direct light but only for an hour or so per day. My difficulty comes from watering as well! The pot that it's in doesn't have very good drainage however! It really IS an odd plant but you won't know unless you TRY & then try try again if you're an over waterererer lol!!! We sometimes love our plants....to DEATH!!

Thank you for this video! Lots of helpful tips. Question...I recently went out of town for the weekend and when I came back my fittonia was droopy and the leaves were extremely crisp. It was not that way when I left town. 🙄 It's been about two weeks now and most of the plant has recovered but much of it has not. Is it a lost cause or can I save my plant? Should I take off the crisp leaves or keep them? Crazy to think I might have killed my plant by being away for 3 days.

I was having such problems with mine. Finally managed to get the hang of it and I forgot to water it for a week and it just shrivelled up and died 😫
Defo want to try again. They’re such sweet and pretty plants💚

Something I started doing a bit ago with plants that like moist soil but are also divas, I water it the normal way from up top and then later that night I get a couple paper towels fold them up into a square and put the plant on top of the paper towel and the paper towel pulls out all that extra water. I’ve been doing this for like a year now and my diva plants are thriving!
I also do this every time I bring a new plant home because, I swear, these nurseries are committed to overwatering and killing plants!

Hello Harli! I am so happy I discovered your channel - you are adorable and I love your humor.
I was wondering if you have any advice about the pink variety - my green and white is THRIVING, but the pink and green leaves feel very stiff and it is not pushing out new growth. Confession: they were both very near an eastern facing window. Any advice anyone has is welcome (just please be nice, I’m new to this plant)! Thank you.

One more bit of info - the white is more mature (8” pot), and the pink is a baby (3” pot”).

I rescued my pink fittonia from Walmart, it was...so sad and honestly I thought it might not make it. Also, I had never even heard of the word fitonia in my life 😂. I watered it when I got home, within a few hours it was tall and bright. She's been in a low to medium light room
since then and is perfect. I also read that they needed sooo much attention but mine certainly didn't. Fish emulsion has helped her grow ALLOT!

I didn't realize Fittonias were supposed to be finicky tbh. Mine is just on my window sill and I water it whenever it starts to get a little droopy and it gets a little neglected sometimes but it looks pretty happy and healthy.

I love my fittonia, it's one of my favorites. I keep her in my bathroom where I have a small, south facing window and she also gets plenty of humidity from showers. I typically water it when I push on the leaves and there's no give if that makes sense. Like it's not wilting but it's not...bouncy?? Lol idk if I'm making any sense at all but she's been super happy so I'll take it

My fittonia has been my easiest houseplant. So much I propagated her and those leaves are the only ones growing some roots
I live in Maryland I keep my humidity around 45. I have a hot pink one I keep on a decor ladder right next to my window so it does get some direct sunlight and it loves it. I just got a baby pink one and she gets no direct sunlight at all so we shall see how she does. The moment the tallest leaf starts to lean I'll water it throughly. I also mist her every to every other day.

  • @evie8826

I test if it need watering bly lightly pressing down on the leaves. If they feel dense and the foliage has give then its fully watered and then the closer it gets to watering time the foliage feels less dense and doesn't have much give, then I water before it wilts :)

I have a mix, have had it for about a year now. SHE GREW LEGS galore 🙄 lol I have a mix of pink and lighter green nerve fittonias and I need to trim because I want them fuller. Ugh I never cut the flowers off when it bloomed , I just let it because I did know about plants and I thought it was best, and that was the start of the leg journey I feel lol

I placed my Fittonia in a fishbowl, it’s doing ok, no wilting or anything but the leaves and stems are just all pointing up like reaching for the sky. Others say this is Phototropism but I really would love my Fittonia to just relax a bit. Any idea how I can make that happen?
