Honestly, those controversies were what made Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Mansell and others into legends they are today. Those men were true warriors: skilled, brave and determined to win. As far as I'm concerned, any one of them could've been number one and no one would be able to disagree. That said, you did Moreno dirty. Man managed to qualify with EuroBrun, Andrea Moda and Forti. How many other drivers can say that they accomplished such a feat? Anyway. have you ever considered doing a video like this for all the constructors from each decade? Brilliant talent, brilliant driver, brilliant person, and he is the only british driver to win an f1 title and then move to indycar and win it in his rookie season. I loved watching him drive, and he was a great advertisement for the sport
Interesting fact: the andrea moda chassis was one of the better chassis on the grid so the car handled very well, it was just that every other component of everything else was holding it back, to say it lightly

As a newbie to the sport, this is some of my favorite F1 content on RUclips. But if I could offer some constructive criticism, you state the driver's name once at the start, but then often only use "he" afterwards and I sometimes forget who's being talked about. Could you show the name/position on screen, or use their name more often? Thanks for the videos!
100% agree about the need to add the driver's first or last name somewhere at the end of the individual narrative. I've been watching this video while in the Garage, mod distracted, and then had to rewind, thinking, "Which driver is this again?"

2:38:25 This was not a questionable disqualification. Recieving outside assistance to restart your car, has been a disqualification since the 1960's. That is final. 2nd, he circumvented the track by not going through the chicane. That's two reasons he was disqualified. It's not questionable. Thanks for your videos. I did some racing driver lessons back in the 90s and met Andrea Chiesa. He spoke about the car he drove where he hardly fit in standing on his other feet as it was too short for him. He said he never took more risk than in this car and still he remembered his head pushed beside when one of the top cars just smashed by on the straights.

Wendlinger was on his way up, performing well and was on the candidate list of top teams. But after his life threatening crash in Monaco, he could not overcome his fear in an open wheeler anymore and had physical problems, too. But later on, he was successful in the GT championship.
I've been playing these driver ranking videos over and over, and I can sincerely say, I can't disagree. These are the most accurate driver rankings ever. This kid has more knowledge about F1 than most Sky sports commentators.
@@DexDrives Pathetic and pityful? It’s written with humor and self-distance. Perry is’nt complaining about him not having an F1-career. The only time he’s kind of complaining is about the Andrea Moda-team sending him out in dry conditions with wet weather tyres. Or when they send him out with a flexing steering rack at Spa. And hey; who wouldn’t? The book is a great read and Perry comes through as a top bloke with a large chunk of self-distance and a great sense of humor.
I recently have read the book of Perry McCarthy myself and i can confirm it is a great book about how perseverance, determination and improvisation can be rewarded in the long term.

I really like this video, which is so well researched, and unlike lots of other creators, you seem to have spent some time checking the pronunciation of driver names. I think, though, that if you could get a pop filter for your miocrophone, it would help a lot - that or running the sound file through Audacity or GarageBand before uploading. That said, again, a great video.

I'd argue that, if we look at the numbers, Senna won 31% of his races to Schumacher's 27% and even though he had half the amount of races, he got more poles. That's crazy when you think about it. And even when the numbers are close, all the stories that made Senna an iconic figure end up as tie-breakers in his favor.

To me he was a winner with passion, determination and above all charismatic. I have not seen a driver since with those qualities. Jan Magnussen had a ton of potential, shame it never clicked for him in F1. Always sad to hear Ukyo Katayama had health issues. Many people sneered about him being a mobile chicane but there was a reason he was always hired. Always interested in the stories of the guys at the back. Grew up with Minardi and Rial as my favourite teams. Great content.
@@SharDarksoulThat car was really good though. One of those cars that were incredibly good aerodynamically. An Alesi type level driver in that would've put it on podiums at some races. It was like the 1990 car in chassis level again the competition. Ken Tyrrell was very annoyed that year in how wasted that car was.
I saw Ukyo race a few times live in that Tyrrell Yamaha. Great sounding car. Great livery. It was Kenny's last ditch effort. I loved Uncle Ken. I attended over 50 GP in through the 80s and 90s. Such a great time. I never went back to an F1 race once they went to Hybrid. Noise and smell was the rush. I was at the Canadian GP in 1995. I was sitting 3rd on the grid, front row. Alesi was right in front of me. It was his birthday. I started singing Happy Birthday and the crowd all joined in. He tossed his gloves over the fence to me. The Ferrari 412 T2 was probably the best engine I ever heard in F1. Montreal just bought new metal grandstands. You could literally feel that Ferrari coming up the straight via your A..hole.
Great video, excellent rankings, I loved watching this. Some drivers who impressed me at one time or another are Van de Poele (against Damon Hill), Gugelmin, Comas, Caffi, Katayama, Larini, Wendlinger, Fittipaldi, Modena, Martini, Blundell, Trulli (especially in qualifying), Brundle. But I think your ratings of them are still relatively fair. I also think Prost should be above Hakkinen, even if we are only considering the 1990s, but I understand the reasoning. Excellent list!
Respect for your effort, good work! I am one of the few weirdos who see 90's Schumacher better than 90's Senna mainly because of his audacity to join Ferrari knowing that it would take a few years to become competitive. Very few drivers would have dared such a move.
At 2:14, the narrator says something funny: "Jacques Villeneuve Jr. had big boots to fill as the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve Sr.". No mention of that fact that Jacques Jr. is the son of F1 Legend Gilles Villeneuve. Just a passing reference that he is the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve Sr. Jacques Sr. is a bit of a Legend in Québec due to his daredevil snowmobile racing. However, he has always been in the shadow of his older brother Gilles that held a seat at Ferrari for several years prior to passing in an accident at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.
In 94 Mansell had a bad car in Indy, just that, and for 93 he asked same sallary as Prost but Williams told him to reduce it as Senna had offered himself free-sallary. DUDE, give a damn right data!
Hakkinen and Schumacher were in the completely different league than others (if you consider Prost, Senna and Mansell as mainly 80's drivers). Hakkinen had a competitive and reliable car only for three years. He took 2 WDC's and 26 pole positions from that.
The difficulty is that Mansell, Senna and Prost overlapped 80’s and early 90’s. So it is hard to rank. If it was ranking mid 80’s to early 90’s - you got Senna, Prost and Mansell. In that order.
@@wiscious Mansell got beaten by Elio De Angelis at Lotus 5 years in a row. Mansell got beaten by Keke Rosberg at Williams 1985. Keke was light years faster and both Mansell's wins in 1985 came from Keke's misfortunes. Mansell had the best car in 1986 and 1987 and couldn't beat injured Piquet in 1987. Then Prost demolished him at Ferrari 1990. Mansell was fast and talented but as an overall racing driver he shouldn't be discussed in the same sentence with Prost and Senna. Very error prone guy. The only teammate Mansell really ever beat was Patrese and in 1992 Patrese couldn't get along with the active suspension car. It was much closer before that. Mansell needed a superior car to win the title. But I agree that Hakkinen/Schumacher era was way less competitive than the 80's.

Mansell got to F1 because Colin Chapman liked his driving and suffering with a broken back (F3 crash with Elio) Colin picked him to race for Lotus and was Test Driver while Elio got the second seat at Lotus. In a Silverstone test, he held the Lotus Teams lap record. Beating Elio, Andretti, Reutemann, etc. He wasn’t slow, just less experienced than Elio - eventually he was able to get faster and by the mid 80’s he was a match for anyone and in 86 he had the title stolen by bad luck. But original point. Mansell was in the same ballpark as Prost and Senna, what he lacked in pure talent he made up for with his determination and ability to drive the balls off a car. He was absolutely mental and had a heart of a lion. He was aggressive and was brilliant to watch.

You might think Rosberg's reputation was hampered because of 1986 McLaren year where he couldn't drive the understeery car. Long story but that guy won WDC with a 200 hp underpowered car and 4 1st place DNF's in 1985 alone. He was crazy fast in his prime. Monaco 1983 and Dallas 1984 win with that pig of a car were amazing and Mansell was no match to him 1985. Stupid move to leave Williams when the car was just getting good. Mansell, Berger, De Angelis in my opinion in the third basket. All great drivers though. Cheers.
What a huge video, so many drivers, unbelievable. I was only a kid in the 90s and started watching F1 in around '94, but back then I did not realize just how many "random" drivers there were. That being said, the ranking is a bit weird sometimes, i.e. ranking Noda, who never finished an F1 race, ahead of someone like Ratzenberger, especially since this video only uses the F1 performances of the 90s to rank them. This video is more like "listing every F1 driver of the 1990s" than "ranking" them based on their performance in said time frame. 1:59:30 what? :D

At minute 22:27 you are wrong. Toshio Suzuki and Toyota hadn't won the 1999 Le Mans 24 hours. They got the 2nd place behind the BMW of Winkelhock, Martini and Dalmas.

It prompted Worth to start Simtek outright and in 1995 they were threatening to really go places.

I was at college and met perry and say “that he world the drivers tiles” along side Schumacher. Great guy and great book a must read

The only time he’s kind of complaining is about the Andrea Moda-team sending him out in dry conditions with wet weather tyres. Or when they send him out with a flexing steering rack at Spa. And hey; who wouldn’t?
The book is a great read and Perry comes through as a top bloke with a large chunk of self-distance and a great sense of humor.
I recently have read the book of Perry McCarthy myself and i can confirm it is a great book about how perseverance, determination and improvisation can be rewarded in the long term.

I really like this video, which is so well researched, and unlike lots of other creators, you seem to have spent some time checking the pronunciation of driver names. I think, though, that if you could get a pop filter for your miocrophone, it would help a lot - that or running the sound file through Audacity or GarageBand before uploading. That said, again, a great video.

Great video. Couple of small notes, Damon being "joined by his replacement" doesn't make sense, and I think Jacques' Dad's shoes were perhaps bigger to fill than his uncle's.
The replacement line was he was joined by his WILLIAMS replacement.

I'd argue that, if we look at the numbers, Senna won 31% of his races to Schumacher's 27% and even though he had half the amount of races, he got more poles. That's crazy when you think about it. And even when the numbers are close, all the stories that made Senna an iconic figure end up as tie-breakers in his favor.
@@gabrielsena704 Plus the fact that Senna obvoiusly only drove for 4 seasons in the 90s, and died at the prime of his life and career. Imagine if Hill could give Schumacher a very competitive fight, imagine what Senna would´ve done instead.

what was senna's win percentage in the 80's? 25%? schumacher's 90's is simply better than senna's no matter how much you want to produce stats to spin it
the most important stat is that senna begged and pleaded to join williams in 1994 but schumacher joined ferrari in 1996 and destroyed williams himself and never tried to take the easy road

Just seen your ranking video Peter and totally agree with your top ten and Senna at No.1. I was devastated when he died and my passion for F1 dwindled accordingly. To me he was a winner with passion, determination and above all charismatic. I have not seen a driver since with those qualities. I’ve now subscribed and thank you for the research involved in producing this video. 😇🙏🏿

Jan Magnussen had a ton of potential, shame it never clicked for him in F1. Always sad to hear Ukyo Katayama had health issues. Many people sneered about him being a mobile chicane but there was a reason he was always hired.
Always interested in the stories of the guys at the back. Grew up with Minardi and Rial as my favourite teams. Great content.
Katayama was pretty good in 1994.
@@SharDarksoulThat car was really good though. One of those cars that were incredibly good aerodynamically. An Alesi type level driver in that would've put it on podiums at some races. It was like the 1990 car in chassis level again the competition. Ken Tyrrell was very annoyed that year in how wasted that car was.
I saw Ukyo race a few times live in that Tyrrell Yamaha. Great sounding car. Great livery. It was Kenny's last ditch effort. I loved Uncle Ken.
I attended over 50 GP in through the 80s and 90s. Such a great time. I never went back to an F1 race once they went to Hybrid. Noise and smell was the rush.
I was at the Canadian GP in 1995. I was sitting 3rd on the grid, front row. Alesi was right in front of me. It was his birthday. I started singing Happy Birthday and the crowd all joined in. He tossed his gloves over the fence to me.
The Ferrari 412 T2 was probably the best engine I ever heard in F1. Montreal just bought new metal grandstands. You could literally feel that Ferrari coming up the straight via your A..hole.

The 96 season showed the difference between a world class driver and great drivers.. the benetton would have won the title in shumachers hands..
Great video, excellent rankings, I loved watching this. Some drivers who impressed me at one time or another are Van de Poele (against Damon Hill), Gugelmin, Comas, Caffi, Katayama, Larini, Wendlinger, Fittipaldi, Modena, Martini, Blundell, Trulli (especially in qualifying), Brundle. But I think your ratings of them are still relatively fair. I also think Prost should be above Hakkinen, even if we are only considering the 1990s, but I understand the reasoning. Excellent list!
Mark Blundell was a heck of a driver. He had some great wins - and an all time huge crash, over a hundred Gs - in IndyCar.

I am one of the few weirdos who see 90's Schumacher better than 90's Senna mainly because of his audacity to join Ferrari knowing that it would take a few years to become competitive.
Very few drivers would have dared such a move.

No mention of that fact that Jacques Jr. is the son of F1 Legend Gilles Villeneuve. Just a passing reference that he is the nephew of Jacques Villeneuve Sr. Jacques Sr. is a bit of a Legend in Québec due to his daredevil snowmobile racing. However, he has always been in the shadow of his older brother Gilles that held a seat at Ferrari for several years prior to passing in an accident at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.

In 94 Mansell had a bad car in Indy, just that, and for 93 he asked same sallary as Prost but Williams told him to reduce it as Senna had offered himself free-sallary. DUDE, give a damn right data!

Hakkinen and Schumacher were in the completely different league than others (if you consider Prost, Senna and Mansell as mainly 80's drivers). Hakkinen had a competitive and reliable car only for three years. He took 2 WDC's and 26 pole positions from that.
Jacques was that level of driver but totally fucked his career with the move to BAR. You're right that Mika and Schumacher are a clear top two
The difficulty is that Mansell, Senna and Prost overlapped 80’s and early 90’s. So it is hard to rank.
If it was ranking mid 80’s to early 90’s - you got Senna, Prost and Mansell. In that order.
@@wiscious Mansell got beaten by Elio De Angelis at Lotus 5 years in a row. Mansell got beaten by Keke Rosberg at Williams 1985. Keke was light years faster and both Mansell's wins in 1985 came from Keke's misfortunes. Mansell had the best car in 1986 and 1987 and couldn't beat injured Piquet in 1987. Then Prost demolished him at Ferrari 1990.
Mansell was fast and talented but as an overall racing driver he shouldn't be discussed in the same sentence with Prost and Senna. Very error prone guy. The only teammate Mansell really ever beat was Patrese and in 1992 Patrese couldn't get along with the active suspension car. It was much closer before that. Mansell needed a superior car to win the title.
But I agree that Hakkinen/Schumacher era was way less competitive than the 80's.
@@detonator2112 respectfully I disagree with you. Mansell got to F1 because Colin Chapman liked his driving and suffering with a broken back (F3 crash with Elio) Colin picked him to race for Lotus and was Test Driver while Elio got the second seat at Lotus.
In a Silverstone test, he held the Lotus Teams lap record. Beating Elio, Andretti, Reutemann, etc.
He wasn’t slow, just less experienced than Elio - eventually he was able to get faster and by the mid 80’s he was a match for anyone and in 86 he had the title stolen by bad luck.
But original point. Mansell was in the same ballpark as Prost and Senna, what he lacked in pure talent he made up for with his determination and ability to drive the balls off a car. He was absolutely mental and had a heart of a lion. He was aggressive and was brilliant to watch.

But I respectfully disagree. He was not at Senna / Prost level. In one lap occasionally, sure... but not even close as a complete driver.
80's rankings: Senna, Prost in the league of their own. Piquet, Rosberg in the second basket. You might think Rosberg's reputation was hampered because of 1986 McLaren year where he couldn't drive the understeery car. Long story but that guy won WDC with a 200 hp underpowered car and 4 1st place DNF's in 1985 alone. He was crazy fast in his prime. Monaco 1983 and Dallas 1984 win with that pig of a car were amazing and Mansell was no match to him 1985. Stupid move to leave Williams when the car was just getting good.
Mansell, Berger, De Angelis in my opinion in the third basket.

What a huge video, so many drivers, unbelievable. I was only a kid in the 90s and started watching F1 in around '94, but back then I did not realize just how many "random" drivers there were.
That being said, the ranking is a bit weird sometimes, i.e. ranking Noda, who never finished an F1 race, ahead of someone like Ratzenberger, especially since this video only uses the F1 performances of the 90s to rank them. This video is more like "listing every F1 driver of the 1990s" than "ranking" them based on their performance in said time frame.

Senna over Schumacher is a far bigger roberry. Hill had the best car by far and was lucky to win in 96. He is the most overrated Champion of all time in my opinion
At minute 22:27 you are wrong. Toshio Suzuki and Toyota hadn't won the 1999 Le Mans 24 hours. They got the 2nd place behind the BMW of Winkelhock, Martini and Dalmas.
