  • A couple of months ago we sat down for the legendary project "In Rainbows" and far out what a moment. Going through the Radiohead discography has been such a pleasure and being able to share that with the many fans around the world has made this ride even more enjoyable. Before I head to "King of Limbs" I thought I would do a quick pit stop and check out disk 2 of "In Rainbows" which are some B sides that didn't make the final cut. If this is your first time checking out disk 2 or you have listened to it 1000 times welcome to this weeks reaction. All I gotta say is mannnnn.....what a band
    My name is Jack and I love music, in particular Hip Hop, I decided to make this channel as a way to engage with other music lovers and because there doesn't seem to be a lot of reaction channels on RUclips...My goal has always been to be open to all types of music regardless of my love of Hip Hop, on this channel you can expect a rich array of genres. If you're keen to join me on my music journey then please subscribe, if you ever want to give your thoughts on an album or song that I have reacted to, then please do. I want this channel to be a community and if you love music of any genre then welcome!!!

    Down Is The New Up barely got cut from In Rainbows main tracklisting. In an interview with Ed he said Thom was pushing for the song to be on disc 1, but the rest of the band felt the tone was far too angry like something from Hail To The Thief and wouldn't match thematically with In Rainbows.

    Awesome that you decided to check this out! It's easy to skip over Disk 2 since it's not officially a studio album release, but it's got a lot of quality moments. And that rings true for most of Radiohead's B-side material. Some of my favorite tracks are B-sides. From the "My Iron Lung" EP to their most recent releases, every era has some absolute gems. When you're Radiohead, some killer tracks unfortunately have to get left behind. And they're one of the few bands where you can look at the tracklists and go, "well damn, which songs can you even justify replacing on this album?" It's definitely a good problem to have.

    • @user-lt6zi4sv9t
      @user-lt6zi4sv9t Год назад +1

      Unlike many of their songs, this one keeps it simple on instrumentation and more straight forward with the lyrics. I imagine that he sings as he's the patient that feels like he doesn't have any control over what's happening around him anymore. "Appliances" keep him alive and are berzerk/beeping everywhere, he feels like his opinion is worth as much as a snot nosed little punk's because he's decaying and not taken seriously, houses that move and speak are the family members gathering in the hospital arguing how to decide his fate. And this all happens with such anxiety and powerlessness, that letting him die (take me there) is probably the best way for everyone to feel relief. Though no one wants to believe it, deep down everyone knows it. Simpler than most songs, but pierces right through you if you've ever been through a situation like this.

    Yeah it's a joke that these are B-sides. The quality is so high, and not just the quality in the songwriting but also the production. The way that acoustic guitar comes in on Go Slowly is masterful. They do so much with so little. Truly an example to be followed if you're an up and coming musician - this is how you construct songs.

I'm sure you get this suggestion a lot and I'm not sure it's up your alley, but another band that really goes whole hog on these kinds of songwriting techniques is Tool, although it's a lot heavier and aggressive, there's a similarity in the way the two bands layer up songs, bring things in and out in tasteful ways, vary things up and keep you on your toes. Great bro, great bro...didn't expect this, great surprise! The B-Sides are an entire second journey as they are prolific - nearly a 2nd album per all 9 (with a couple of exceptions) FULL of strong to GREAT songs. This Disc 2 is definitely a proper way to move on from this crest of "In Rainbows" into the post- Rainbows work, which you should be very excited for! Whether the B-Sides, live shows like the 2 Basement shows or the full band legendary sets or Thom and Jonny doing their acoustic tours in 2003, to their side work then the unreleased mythical tracks that were only partially recorded a soundcheck that the fan community spreads - there is so so much more once the full album ride concludes. So this is a great return, nice to see you again, and this should be a good indicator of what a Radiohead "B-Side" really means - it is a whole body of MORE incredible music. Peace and good times!

      @leehiro4840 not a big fan of the studio version of lift (I hate the cheesey keyboards)
      I always listen to a live version, much better IMHO

    How about listening to Yorke's solo albums after all radiohead discography? They are more electronic, but still interesting.

    As others have said, Radiohead b-sides are incredible. Some just as good as album tracks and for my tastes, certain songs are even better than what’s on the record. Could easily name 20 b-sides that are amazing, plus of course disk 2 which is a great compliment to the main In Rainbows album. Thanks for another great reaction!

    Alright, it's official. Last Flowers is definitely one of Radiohead's saddest songs ever. I like how it begins with the unusual chord progression and decrepit lyrics like "snot-nosed little punk", and then that chorus melody comes in which is really nice with one of my favorite vocal performances from Thom Yorke ever. And finally... the outro is the part that breaks my heart the most. It definitely sounds like the last words or thoughts of a patient in the hospital before they're taken by death. "Too much, too bright, too powerful". That phrase kind of says everything without having to say very much. Also the final change in chord progression really makes a difference. If anything, this actually tugs on my heartstrings way more than No Surprises, believe it or not.

    Last Flowers is def my favorite from this disc! There's a live version they did that's just incredible. It's just Thom during a soundcheck, but it's so angelic. ruclips.net/video/evK6qDeZqiY/видео.html

    If you interested in b-sides and unreleased material compilation of the rest Radiohead albums there are some. Oknotok second disk from OK computer, Third disk of Kid Amnesia, Com Lag from Hail to the Thief. After The King of limbs Radiohead released four tracks: Supercollider, the Butcher, the Dailly mail and Staircase. It's like continuation of TKOL, but those tracks are better than whole TKOL album.

    Listen to the 2002 Salamanca version of Up on a Ladder and weep - it could have been a standout on HTTT. It used to be extremely dynamic and multi-sectioned.

    I’d maybe switch out Faust Arp for Bangers + Mash, but only because I’d be switching my least favorite from IR for the favorite Bside. Not sure it would work sonically but I love B+M. It’s probably my favorite Bside of theirs because it’s so fun. I get why it didn’t make the cut, but man I love how loose it is.

    Honestly, even though I’m a huge Radiohead fan, I always forget that this album exists. But your reaction made me realise I need to revisit it more. Sometimes it’s easy to write off the b-sides, but this has some absolute gems that I’d totally forgotten about 😍 Thank you for not skipping it!!
