- Radiohead have been one of the most inventive and innovative bands of the last couple of decades. A band in which I had heard so much about yet never stopped to really listen to. I decided it was time for that to Change, I randomly picked the album "KID A" (2000) what an adventure I was in for. Join CavemanJack as we delve into the trippy story this album tells.

That song moved me so damm much
I use to listen to this album religiously, especially "how to dissappear completly" on the way to the hospital to see my dying dad for about a month.. this song is bitter sweet to say the least.
Jonny Greenwood arranged all the strings for this album and others, he's the lead guitarist. He did a phenomenal job.

Definitely Greenwood doing the strings; he's also composed several film scores and was working with the BBC philharmonic.

Yeah Jonny definitely arranged the strings. He did a LOT more than that. According to Thom the song Kid A was actually written by Jonny. Which means he probably did a LOT on that song, including playing the vocal melody with his Ondes Martenot which they ran Thom's voice through for that song. Yeah, Jonny did a lot on this album.
Thank goodness you didn't leave this planet having only heard Creep. This band is just unspeakably talented. It's so mind-blowing.

weirdly enough, people tend to not like this album on the first listen, but its great that you liked it, not exactly an album to start with, but with this down, every other for you should be very easily digestable
haha it was such a journey, I definitely gotta pick up the Vinyl of this. Im exited to check out their other work!
I liked it right off the bat and I wouldn´t consider myself a particular radiohead. Not an everyday record, rather one for special moments.

i listened to optimistic and on the FIRST time i listened to it it became my favorite song so easily alongside paranoid android
My dad raided my bag when I visited him when this came out and played it. I gifted it to him a year or two later and he’s still in love with it in his 70s lol
You're probably gonna see In Rainbows and Ok Computer a lot (amazing albums) but my personal favorite is their most recent album A Moon Shaped Pool, it holds such a special place in my heart because of it's topics. When I was in the roughest part of my life a couples months ago, that album was there and as cold and depressing as the album sounds sonically, I somehow found comfort in all the tracks, idk there was just something about it, wish I could listen to it for the first time again, a lot of fans say it's their most gorgeous album sound wise and I agree. 11/10
That's what is incredible about music it can be complete personal for people, and can take you back to certain points or help work through difficult patches! I definitely have albums like that so thank you for sharing!

You should start with the Bends then OK Computer which is the album before Kid A so you can see the insane progression this band went through and the incredible balls it took to make Kid A.

Starting with KID A was so wild of you, but so much respect for you that you were able to listen to it critically! A lot of people find this one hard to digest, because it's so sonically trippy. Props, Jack!
Side note: There's an alternate version of Morning Bell on Amnesiac, and that version is very different. I think you'll enjoy it!

I've always thought the most criminally underrated song on Kid A is "In Limbo". If you ever see live performances of that song (a few exist on line from them), that is a STUNNING piece of work in terms of ethereal timing.
Each Radiohead album is almost completely different from the others by the way, each are a different journey

Kid A is when I started to realize how immensely great Colin Greenwood is - the magical element he adds (and continues to build and expand). Not to mention really understand how great a composer Jonny is.

I really appreciated that they didn't just do a sequel to OK Computer...which had been heralded as one of the most important genius works of that decade, along with Nirvana 'Nevermind', Pearl Jam, and Tool's Aneima. KID A had nothing in common with 'Ok', they took a whole new approach, and drew inspiration from German bleep minimalists such as NEU!, Kraftwerk, and Holger Zukay, allowing the guitars and basses to be a part of the electronic tapestry, instead of dominating with full chordal blocks that tend to dictate and lead the way of the harmonic arrangment in Rock composition. 'Paranoid Android' for example, was built entirely from the guitar chords and was probably written entirely on acoustic guitar. But with KID A, they made it very clear that they were creating an 'album' and the songs and production choices were carried out to serve the whole post-apocalyptic world of broken machines and broken people in an awkward alliance.
This was an excellent dive into the workings of Radiohead during their work on KID A. Thank you mark, I truly admire the courage they seemed to show when jumping to KID A, I haven't heard anything besides this and Pablo honey now but am super exited to hear the transitions between each album as I continue my journey through their projects.
Kid A is incredible, and the sound change from OK Computer is just as incredible, also every other Radiohead's album is incredible in its own way, each one is a journey
You're going to be suggested OK Computer and In Rainbows a lot and they're both amazing. My personal favourite though is Hail to the Thief.

i had a friend listen to this album for (his) the first time. He immediately fell in love with it and listened to it 3 times in one day. He worked at a Top 40 radio station and had never experienced anything like it. I literally watched Kid A change a person's life.

Where most records today are just a collection of songs, Kid A is an album. Kinda reminds me of Pink Floyd in how complete it is. Everything in its right place, truly.

You picked a challenging record for your first Radiohead experience. Kid A was an album I could not fully appreciate my first few listens - it was unlike anything I’d ever heard before and there’s a lot going on. It’s like a fine wine that gets better the more you listen to it.
As others have mentioned, I would recommend The Bends (1995), Ok Computer (1997), and In Rainbows (2007) next. Personally, I feel it would provide more insight and context to start with the older albums first, to see their evolution.
The abrupt shift Radiohead took in their sound from the more commercial-friendly OK Computer to the challenging, often bleak and anxiety/depression-ridden Kid A (no guitars whatsoever until the fourth track) sent shockwaves through the music industry, and Kid A remains probably one of the most contentious albums ever released to this day; some love it, some hate it.

This album is a piece of art, will never get old.
It's crazy how Radiohead, even going by critical reviews and not personal opinion, could make a solid claim to having the best album in the 90s, 00s, and 10s.
When they release an album, it's not just an album release, it's an EVENT.
Im really hoping they have another album to come out one day!

My 23 year old story of Radiohead loving began from Kid A. Which is kinda weird. Not Ok Computer (i was15 when it was released) but Kid A. Lots of people around me at the time thought i was a drug addict, because they thought no one in their right mind would listen to this kind of music. I was an author in russian version of New Musical Express magazine at the time, so it was hard to fight with those who adored new rock revolution with Strokes, Vines, White Stripes etc. But i fought bravely. They didn't even fire me.
Now, 23 years later, i'm a screenwriter looking forward to direct my first tv-show and i hope i can use The National Anthem in most tense moment of the show. Kid A made me see music in a whole different way and i will forever be grateful for it.

If you like more Dark stuff, I highly recommend Amnesiac and Hail to The Thief. They fulfill that requirement in addition to being together with Kid A the albums that most define how unique this band is.
Im definetly going to check them out on the journey ! keen to hear that unique sound continue!
Oh mate, what a first Radiohead album to listen to! Impressive that you dig it straight away, as a fan (and a guitar loving teenager) at the time going from Ok Computer to this was a honestly tough and if I'm being brutally honest it took me a few years to fully get what they're doing on this album, but now it's my favourite one, and it opened my eyes to other sonic possibilities in mainstream rock and elsewhere.
Once I get through the bends and ok computer I will start to see and understand how it must have felt for people going from these albums to kid A, So cool to hear that its now your fav

Not another album like this. The gold standard of art-alt rock. I bought this CD at the time right when it came out. I can listen to this now after over two decades and still have my mind blown by this album.

Motion Picture Soundtrack reduced me to a quivering, bawling mess first time I heard it, glad it had a similar effect on you. My favourite Radiohead song and I don’t listen to it often to preserve that effect it has on me

Good choices. Going off at several tangents, I certainly think you should listen to the anniversary editions of The Beatles White Album ( I could have chosen Sgt Pepper or Abbey Road) and Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. Also Mezzanine by Massive Attack, Mingus by Joni Mitchell.

@@cavemanjack They are the only band that I can think of that 8 of their 9 albums do not sound alike and all 8 after the first one is some fans favorite album. The are a lot of great Jazz and even Classical covers which you really do not see that much in a rock band although I would say that they are a genre unto themselves and they play everything brillantly live with no pre-recorded sounds. Seeing them live is something I would highly recommend the two stellar basement sessions is where I would go next start with In Rainbows from the basement with the added bonus that you can react to the whole session in full and it will not get blocked.
So glad you decided to check out this album :)) I’d highly recommend going back to listen to Ok Computer, and then checking out In Rainbows, Amnesiac, The Bends and A Moon Shaped Pool. My personal favourite is Amnesiac (basically kid a’s twin)

Really enjoyed watching you take in Kid A for the first time. When it first came out, it really was a challenge to take in due to it being such a new and unexpected sound from them. However I think because of the many bands that were inspired by this, 20 years later it’s probably not such a challenge. I'd recommend, now that you've gotten exposure to where Radiohead goes quality wise, you should start from the beginning and go through their whole discog. You won't regret it.

You will not see their version of the national anthem in any motion picture soundtrack, but you may have bad dreams of tree fingers. May kid a rouse you before the morning bell.

Great to see this. I’ve loved this band for a long time. I got to see them in Sydney about 10 years ago and they were so good! Highly recommend Thom Yorkes new project, The Smile. It’s my album of the year so far.

- In Rainbows ... An experiment in rhythm
- A Moon Shaped Pool ... A beautifully haunting album
Those would be my next top 3 however I would recommend to take to the time to hear all their music.

I encourage another listen of Kid A. This time, on your own, laying down on your bed, closed eyes in a dark room. I like to think the album is split in two halves. Tracks 1-4, 5 is a palette cleanser for 6-10. Like you, Kid A was my first full album experience of RH & I didn’t know what to expect. It has become my fav album of all time. Loved the reaction! As others have said, Ok Computer or In Rainbows should be next!

A couple of things; 1. Great reaction! many have said it already, but this isn’t exactly the easiest first Radiohead album. 2. I really admire your interactions with the comments. It’s nice to see a creator actually engage with viewers. 3. I haven’t seen anybody here mention it yet, so I will. Treefingers, despite what you may think, is 100% guitar work and isn’t actually a synth. Just a nice fun fact for you!

…chuck klosterman in his book ‘killing urself to live’ wrote a whole section describing how this album is the soundtrack for 9-11…he goes hour by hour and lines up each song to that day.

Brilliant video, mate! As the others said, OK Computer and In Rainbows are considered the other top tier Radiohead albums alongside Kid A, so those should be awesome listens. They've got some other gems like The Bends and A Moon Shaped Pool, too. Can't wait for the next one!

The sound landscape of this record is so incredible but you really should have really started from the beginning so you could have seen the quantum leap they took from album to album. Their journey was very Beatles-like that is the band I most compare them too. You missed the shock that this album caused I actually stopped listening to them for years after the album that came out after this one which was recorded in the same sessions. They pissed me off with this record because I wanted OK Computer part 2 and I got this I hated it. Years later after seeing the basement session for In Rainbows I revisited all their work and was stunned by how amazing their discography is needless to say I loved this record when I was ready for it. Radiohead is the only band that I love almost all their music and the handfull that I do not love I can still appreciate the ideas that went into it even their b-sides.

With Radiohead as my favorite band, Kid A is my favorite album ever... It's just so perfect. And In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool come relatively close. They're close enough to warrant videos.

Normally i and most other people wouldn't recommend Kid A as an introduction to the band since it's so wildly different from their other albums. Glad you enjoyed it still

I will join u on your Radiohead journey .. from the start I have been with them .Radiohead is a part of me but similarly later on Tame Impala .. please do a similar journey with them.. you already started with Lonerism.. which is kinda similar to have started with Kid-A 😆. thanks..

If you like video games, you might be interested to know that just last year Radiohead released the "Kid A Mnesia Exhibition" for FREE (!!) on PS5/Mac/PC, which is a walking simulator/visual representation of the sounds of Kid A and its follow-up album Amnesiac, based on the various artworks the band did around that era. If you've ever wondered what a playable visual representation of How to Disappear Completely would look like... it's a mindblowing experience and incredibly faithful to the whole dark/beautiful/surreal atmosphere of Kid A. I myself am not a gamer or anything but I easily lost an entire afternoon just wandering around and it actually increased my appreciation for the albums as a whole.
Now this is up my alley, I definitely need to check this out and I shall for sure! im so keen to check this out, thank you for letting me know!

In Rainbows or A Moon Shaped Pool would be amazing and I think you'd love both of those, they feel like yin and yang to each other musically even though they aren't related to each other in the slightest. Also Ful Stop from A Moon Shaped Pool is the most Radiohead type shit ever, that tracks one of their best imo

I'd go for Amnesiac next, it came out about 9 months after Kid A and it's mostly tracks recorded in the same sessions.
