After you snipped the wheat grass, can you put that back in the refrigerator and it will continue to grow?

Hi! I was trying to regrow it but I had difficulty because I left it out on my countertop and I noticed that between the roots and the dirt it was starting to get fuzzy, like it was growing mold, so I had to throw it away. But it was growing so I know there must be some type of way to grow it without that happening but I don’t have a green thumb 😂😂
