    I don’t feel like skydiving really allows you to conquer a fear of heights because your brain doesn’t fully comprehend it as such in the moment. I have more anxiety on a tall ladder than I do throughout the whole process of
    skydiving. It was incredible.

      I agree with you 100% - when you’re that high you really don’t have the concept of height……….but put me on the ledge of a 50 ft building 😳

      That's what I always told people when they asked what it was like, especially when they found out I was scared of heights. My explanation was it was like jumping over a patchwork quilt. You were so high up you didn't have the perception of height. You just saw the individual squares of land below you. For me personally it wasn't until about 5 grand that I started to get the perception of the height.

      The thing with skydiving and fear of heights is, that it does not really apply. Fear of heights is something more or less natural that occurs mainly when you are standing on a fixed object with a ground that is visible. If you are in a plane and you are above clouds, I highly doubt that fear of heights would be an issue since there is nothing your eyes can fixate onto. When skydiving you are moving in the plane as well as when in freefall so fast that your eyes can really fix a point on the ground hence no real issue here. You are also so high that it does feel a bit surreal.

    Well done on facing your fear of heights! Great jump! Skydiving opened so many doors for me. I've done bungee jumping, zip-lining, passenger rides in aerobatic stunt planes and wing walking. All good fun that is ready to watch on my RUclips channel.

    I too am absolutely scared to death of heights. But I still cleared AFF and had a blast jumping. One of my Jump Masters said her husband, who also jumped, was so afraid of heights he couldn't go up a two-step ladder without panicking. But he thought nothing of crawling out on the side of an airplane, 2 miles high, hanging on to nuts and bolts before jumping.

    Everyone is scared of heights. It's 100% natural, and nobody isn't. There are only those people who push themselves past that fear, and those who don't.

    • @m_jackson
      @m_jackson 2 года назад +3

      @@dylanpritchard4981 That is catered for by the safety measures in place. If you do a tandem, then obviously it doesn't matter because you're attached to the instructor who is in control. If you're doing the training to do it on your own, the instructor jumping with you for the first few jumps will deploy for you if you pass out, and if not, there is a device called an AAD that deploys your reserve parachute if you're going too fast below a certain height. It is pretty much fail-proof. Nothing to worry about. Thousands of skydives happen every day around the world.

    I was a Marine and we were in a chopper flying over a Pine forest and in a bank I really wanted to dive. Later I was a SCUBA diver and loved to "fly" down the water column in free descent. This coming summer I pledged to myself to do a tandem jump.

    • @georgejacob3162

      It's rare to get that stomach drop feeling. It happens when you are too tense and you haven't relaxed your body enough. Speaking of your stomach I would also recommend no milky products or milky breakfast cereals before flight. I know this from experience as I very nearly redecorated the inside of a cockpit when the pilot subjected me to airshow quality aerobatics in a stunt plane last year. As for the height well there is a saying that 'We jump from 15,000ft because jumping from 15ft is dangerous'. I hate heights too but with skydiving you are SO high that it really doesn't matter. I also hate rollercoasters. Speaking of height may I suggest you try Indoor Skydiving first? That way you get to feel the 'free-fall' at head/chest height. I did that before my first jump and I think it helped to build up my confidence. As for the real jump the tandem instructor will tilt your head back before leaving the plane. This is so that you are not looking straight down and unable to breathe due to the rush of air into your mouth and nose. Remember to keep your eyes open when leaving the plane because many people don't and then say that leaving the plane was the best part and they wish they had kept their eyes open! Tandems always use a drogue chute that is deployed almost immediately after leaving the plane. The drogue chute is used for stability but it's main use is to prevent the tandems falling faster than 125 mph. So as a tandem you cannot fall faster than that. As for the free-fall due to the air pressure pushing up against your body it simply feels as if you are floating and that the air is holding you up. If the main parachute doesn't open then the instructor pull the reserve handle. If the instructor is incapable of pulling the reserve then the AAD computer system should deploy the chute automatically at around 1,000ft. Reserves are used very, very rarely. One of my tandem instructors has jumped over 24,500 times and is still in single figures when he has had to use his reserve. All three of my jumps are on my RUclips channel. You will see me being apprehensive on my first jump and a complete borefest on my third jump! Also going through that fear barrier opened up many more opportunities for me so I've done other stuff like the aforementioned aerobatics, bungee jumping and wing walking. Once you've gotten out of your comfort zone and survived you feel you can achieve anything.

      @@kaileea9044 Actually you don't feel it all the way down, because the air slow you down to terminal velocity so your stomach than still feels gravity. So you only feel it for the first 5 seconds.

      I was also scared. Before my first jump from 10,000ft I was an emotional wreck and kept ignoring my name being called out on the tannoy! But as soon as I got kitted up and in that plane all of my fear had gone and my heart rate was normal from take off to landing. My second jump from 15,000ft was just a relax-fest all day through! Door open? Yeah whatever! I have since done bungee jumping, airshow quality aerobatics and wing walking (including loops) as can be seen on my RUclips channel and I haven't found my limit yet!
