Great video! Right to the point. My steering shaft is in the mail. Thanks! I’ll also be looking for your other video with replacing steering components
I did the red head steering box, pump and steering shaft. I used a reproduction shaft from Hawks so it has the rag joint. My question, is there that much difference between the rag joint style and the one you installed? Thanks for the great videos.
This is old video but hopefully I get a response. I need to find this intermediate shaft or one similar with the adjustable length for my 1988 camaro. If there isn’t let me know, I’m strongly considering just welding my intermediate to my steering column because I’ve tried three and they were too short by about an inch

Do yourself a favor, Bind the steering wheel with a stretchy bungee cord, it will allow you to move it enough and you wont be installing a new air bag ribbon. You can't really lock the wheel and replace the part and no bungee cord is asking for it.
Ryan B, Hello Ryan, I was a GM mechanic back in the day, You have a (wire) ribbon under your steering wheel on the column. This ribbon is in a yellow plastic disc under the steering wheel, It allows you to turn the steering wheel left or right while maintaining a solid electrical connection to your air bag, if you disconnect the the shaft between the steering wheel and rack and pinion (steering box) you could just turn the wheel 100 times to the right, or 100 times to the left, in doing so the ribbon runs out of turns and breaks (it MUST stay centered). By tying the steering wheel down with a bungee cord you can rock the steering wheel back and forth a little in order to get the shaft off and back on, but it will not allow you to turn the steering wheel and break the air bag power ribbon, if in doubt, look up some videos on the air bag ribbon replacement procedure, it's easy, just tie down the wheel so it CAN NOT be turned before re-installing the new shaft.
Ryan B If you where to lock the steering wheel solid so it cant move(like key off column locked position) you would be fighting and fighting to get the steering shaft off and back on, you need to be able to move the shaft back and forth a little to be able to align it and get it back together.
@@stclairstclair so if it breaks, it means the air bag won't work. That's what you're saying right? The car will drive fine tho. Also, what would you attach the bungy to? One from the seat adjust under the driver seat, thru the steering wheel, then back to the seat adjust?
Third time much better, quick to the point very good demonstration.
The good ole matt Walter shaft!!
That sounds so sus 😂 but I know what you mean

Good job! Very informative. Thanks for sharing!
I watched your Nacht der untoten video.. thanks for the help for finding it
Very informative love your Channel. I own a 1989 Camaro RS 2nd owner.
Thank you sir very helpful
How you remove it from top mine is stuck

if you have a NEW rag joint, just keep it. it's mostly old worn out rag joints that cause play in the system.
Can you tell me where did you purchase the new shaft from please?? I'm having a hard time tracking a good one down.
Walter makes em, but they come in batches and sell out fast.
walter-racecraft.myshopify.com/
Robert Coleman you can find them on eBay too!
They're always out though
awesome channel very helpful! will the fuel relay cause the fuel pump to not come on, i ckecked the fuses??? really appreciate it...
there's a million reasons a fuel pump might not turn on. you'll have to hunt the issue down.
@@3rdGenGuy I bet, thanks for responding...
Was the sleeve hard to remove? The sleeve on mine doesn’t want to move even after unclipping it from the top
it can be tight.
keep working on it and it'll move.
What is the name of replacement shaft or brand name. Where did you get the replacement shaft from? Please thank you.
You can buy them from "Matt Walter" at Walter racecraft. he has a website and a Facebook page.

@@3rdGenGuy thanks for the link
Were do I get One of the Steering Shaft
a few ppl sell them.
Walterracecraft
a few guys on the 3rd gen Facebook pages,.
I believe Holley sells a new one now as well.
What's the point of the small nut in the middle of the shaft?
keeps the shaft from collapsing if any bolts get loose.
Was your steering wheel crooked after install? Mine was at least 15 degrees off.
15 degrees is pretty extreme. something went wrong, or maybe the solid shaft was welded wrong.
@@3rdGenGuy I think welded wrong. I had to take the steering wheel off and recenter it.
hi good morning sir. what brand of steering shaft is this? im having thw same trouble. great video

What year Astro Van is the shaft out of?
I don't know.
but the shaft is $75 ish
not worth driving down to a salvage yard to find one, then welding it 90 degrees in my opinion.
,😍😍😍😍👍🌹
What's with the dremel
you have a do a little grinding to make this shaft work.
Go to Hawks motor sports for a performance steering shaft folks. Much better 👍
the $300 Speed engineering shaft is shiny and new , but it doesn't do anything better than the $80 Astro shaft.
both of em get the same result.
Don't tell people to tighten bolts like that. A too tight bolt can cause damage and even break in two.
natural selection
I thought that was pretty dumb too. Im sure that actually has a torque spec. Is that as tight as you can for a 120 pound guy or 240?
What the fick does the hood light got to do anything whit the shaft and not to say he forgot to hook it back up
Drains the battery.
mine went dead after replacing other parts with the hood open.
figured i'd help others avoid the issue
True, I keep the hood light permanently unplugged
I've worked on my iroc for 6 hours at a time and the battery was fine.....
