The tomatoes that I must grow every year: Black Cherry, Sungold, Black Krim, and Brandy Boy. Pinks and Purples are my favorite kind of tomatoes. Sungold is sweet, tasty and prolific but I like the taste of Black Cherry better. I like Black Krim because it's similar taste to Cherokee Purple but way more prolific but also a little smaller. Brandy Boy has a similar taste to Brandywine but also way more prolific.
I love this! Last time I remember sweet Sam was in on the taste test. I guest he’s too young to not know that he’s not too old to participate. If u get me. Lol. Gotta love the tweens and teens.!Thanks Scott.
Great video Scott! Thanks for the honest reviews! I'm trying out the Amana Orange tomato this year and a few different yellow/orange cherry tomatoes for the first time. 2 heirlooms developed in northern-ish Europe too. I'm finally allowing mine to produce flowers so it won't be too long for us to have taste tests! :)
Edox is going on my must grow list for next year. My must grow tomatoes include black cherry, sunsugar or sungold, black vernissage, stupice for sauce, Dr, Wyche's yellow, Cherokee purple, and Juliet. I totally agree that the skins are too tough, but here in northwest Georgia it is prolific and keeps setting fruit right up until frost, when most others are long dead due to heat and disease. I freeze a lot of Juliet and other tomatoes, mostly cherry, for soups and sauces in winter. I also must grow Rosella purple, a dwarf tomato project tomato with a taste like cherokee purple nd full sized fruits on a compact plant. Climbing trip-l-crop is a recently added slicer.
I think I'll try the Edox next year. This year I have Sun Gold, super Sweet 100 and an Italian white cherry which I have never had or heard of. It will be a while before I have ripe tomatoes here in NY.
Oh just dreaming of tasting a fresh tomato. Just got plants in beds so have a bit before seeing anything. I have been hunting recipes for my harvest for canning and freezing, one I found you may enjoy is cherry tomato corn salsa. Or just freeze them to use in a sauce over winter. When they thaw skin falls right off.
Nice video Scott. Beefstake does well for me, and I have grown it now 3 years in a row. I get almost a pound tomatoes. I also like Ace 55, second year growing them. I hope the edox turn out like yours. I al also trying Black Brandywine. Sooner or later I will find 4 varieties I like to grow every year.
I am growing the Green Zebra, Sungold, San Marzano, Edox, Celebrity, and the Roma. I was super surprised how the Green Zebra tasted, it's good. My Edox was more petite than yours, I tried it because of your recommendation. The Sungold is my absolute favorite and I will grow it every year. You need to try it, Scott. I live in Zone 9A here in Texas and they do well with the heat.
I made this recipe today for supper with pan grilled chicken breast. Next time I’m going to just use it as a sauce over the chicken. Thanks for the recipe idea. It was so delicious it’s a keeper
I ordered Edoc seeds for next spring because of your enthusiasm. I recommend "Better Boy" I grew them from seed this year and they have performed very well and I find them delicious. I would give them a 10 and will certainly grow them again next year.
Hey! My favorite cherry tomato was one I planted last year for the first time ! I loved it, has regular old fashioned tomato taste, produced tons of tomatoes on it, all fhe way til Sept! Mountain Vineyard Chedry tomato , fromm Hoss Tools You should try it!
Thanks for the thorough review, Scott! This year, I’m growing Cherokee Purple, Dr Wyches, Amish Paste, San Marzano, Yellow Pear, Brad’s Atomic Grape, and Mortgage Lifter. Amish Paste and Mortgage Lifter haven’t ripened yet, but look good, San Marzano is just a disappointment, so I probably won’t grow those again. Dr Wyches is good, and my kids love the Yellow Pears, but the Cherokee Purple?? Absolutely LOVE them! I like the deep, dark smokey flavor and I can’t imagine not growing them every year. 😗👌🏻
The comments pretty much cover everything. The only thing I would add are yellow pear tomatoes! I live in Arkansas and have had a ton of success with those 👍
People were raving about Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye tomatoes one year. I got them and was so disappointed! They tasted like mush, no real tomato taste, I think you're 100% correct that consistency is key and I think probably the soil has something that may change the taste as well. Love these videos!
Juliette tomatoes are great for canning. Because the skins are tough, are fter blanching you can squeeze the back and they just shoot out onto the bowl.
I wasn’t crazy about Cherokee purple last year. I grew a cherry tomato from a friend who harvested seeds from her crop- they were delicious but I don’t know the name. This year I am growing Jubilee which is a yellow gold. I’m also growing a generic cherry tomato that is so prolific and so delicious and earthy tasting. I am also growing brandywine and can’t wait to try it.
For cherries, I love the Sungold, and my new fave is Braveheart. I also have grown the Black Krim as My fave over Cheokee Purple and Paul Robeson, as neither of those performed well in my 8b/9a microclimate w excessive rain.
This year a friend from Iowa sent me some Sunrise Bumblebee Cherry tomato seeds. I thought that was what you had but you said Morning Sun. The Sunrise Bumblebee is a wonderful tomato; the flavor is great. I wish that would have been the only tomato I planted but I have an unknown tomato and a couple of plum tomatoes, too.
I have a Sunrise Bumblebee that I picked up from a local nursery ... and I am wondering how to know when it is ripe? So far, it seems like they don't want to let go of the vine, even though the color seems appropriate. They then fade to yellow, less stripes? Will let go then. However flavor is unimpressive at that point. I am zone 8b/9a. Any advice you can supply, I would be grateful for!!
@@Katydidit I'm in 9b. Mine are a nice yellow and the stripes are still visible. I don't notice them being harder to pick. Sorry, I can't give you any advice since this is my first time growing them. All I can say is do some research; check RUclips, maybe someone talks about them. Good luck.
I have a friend that used Red Deuce tomatoes from an Amish auction, but only one year. She's says it was meatier than Romas, and that it did not separate when cooked. She hasn't found it since. I googled it and apparently it is an expensive (seed wise) F1 hybrid. I hope you will consider it when choosing next tomato season seeds. Thank you for doing a good job on your videos.
My favorite video of the year. I'd love to see you grow some of the Brandywines...I particularly love the Pink Brandywine and the True Black Brandywine :)
Burpee Red Currant tomatoes. Try them! They are sweet like candy. They changed my opinion about tomatoes. I eat them in the garden right off the vine. Yum!
Great comparison, thank you. Since Cherokee Purple is one of your favorites, if you haven't already, please also try Carbon, Cherokee Carbon, and Paul Robeson. I've gone back and forth with those 3 and Cherokee Purple for years and decided if I could only grow one, I'd grow Paul Robeson. I tried Amana Orange several years ago but didn't like it as much as Kellogg's Breakfast. But since I moved (from zone 8a to 9a), Kellogg's Breakfast is struggling. I'll have to give Amana Orange another try. One of my go-to slicers in the last few years has been Genuwine. For me it's that quintessential tomato that belongs on a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich.
What is your opinion of Black Krim tomato? I grow it in Beaverton, Oregon and it does well for me. And, for a large old heirloom variety it ripens quite well here and develops good flavor.
I'm growing all volunteer everglades and some type of grape tomatoes with the exception of a couple Yaqui paste and three yellow heirlooms of some variety a friend had. Some I will allow to ripen, but I honestly love to pickle the green tomatoes - especially the everglades. They are amazing pickled. I unfortunately cannot eat fresh tomatoes.
My favorite cherry tomato is sun sugar, and I use them in a pasta sauce as well. Could eat them forever! Trying Amana orange and mortgage lifter for the first time this year.

I did a whole row of Edox as I really wanted to have some to put up. Scared a deer out of my little garden this morning - something was eating my sweet potato leaves and I found out who!
I am also growing new-to-me varieties this year. I have two cherry tomato plants, but I have no idea what variety they are. I got them from a friend, who got them from her daughter, who got them free from a lady she knew. They came to me as seedlings and only say "cherry." They'll be a mystery. For my "slicers" I have Jet Star and Pink Brandywine, both bought at a big box hardware store. I have never attempted to grow tomatoes from seed. I tried a new pepper called "mad hatter". Pretty lame TBH. Then, when it got hotter toward late may, they started building some character. I like em now. I think a lot of types of fruit change their composition based on weather.
I keep seeds from some tomatoes, the ones I like. I kept and planted seeds from the Edox F1 hybrid from last year, some of my fruits this year are second generation. I have not noticed much difference, maybe it is a fairly stable hybrid.
I was told the Cherokee Purple is a better heat tolerant variety. Is that true? My seedlings are almost ready to plant and they are growing beautifully.
I’m growing beef steak, big boy, Roma, brandy wine, bronze torche and cherry 100 this year to figure out our favorites. It’s strange that your beef steaks are so small. Wondering what caused that.
Could the Beef Steak have been mislabeled? Usually on a burger the beef steak is so large you say "where's the beef". They totally cover the bun. Well, after cutting, it is a beef steak. It seemed tough or hard to slice in half.
Yeah I don't like floral fruit either, not even sweet tomatoes! These things need lots of acid to have that classic flavor I'd expect from a good tomato.
The Park Whopper (Park Seed) is my all time favorite go-to tomato. The "if I could only grow one" tomato .. It's a hybrid. Great on a BLT or burger but they also make a great sauce. You should try at least one plant sometime and see how it does for you.
Sees him cut tomatoe from top to bottom clicks do not recommend videos from the channel oh nevermind he redeemed himself in the beefsteak 😂 ok I'll keep watching lol
Maybe they need a little fertilizer boost? Or some Epsom salts? Don't give up... there is a definite learning curve to gardening! And I promise you... it is attainable if you stick with the process!!
I don’t know what tomatoes I’m growing but I can’t wait. They are producing right now.

Wow this was interesting. Do you also keep seeds on grow tomatoes for your own seeds or are those all hybrids?
I keep seeds from some tomatoes, the ones I like. I kept and planted seeds from the Edox F1 hybrid from last year, some of my fruits this year are second generation. I have not noticed much difference, maybe it is a fairly stable hybrid.
I'm growing 'mr stripey' yellow and red tomatoes this year for the first time. I'll let you know how they turn out and how they taste. 👍

❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍😊😊😊
I was told the Cherokee Purple is a better heat tolerant variety. Is that true? My seedlings are almost ready to plant and they are growing beautifully.
They are pretty decent in the heat.
Thank you.
What about the Better Bush or Better Boy?
We are trying the edox cherry this year for the first time and they are good but not great.
I find they are best when picked super ripe and allowed to chill out on the kitchen counter for a few days.
@@ScottHead thanks for the tip!
I've found it's a category with a wide range of sizes. Better Boy doesn't get big but Big Beef gets huge and they're both beefsteak types. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My beefsteaks don’t get that big unless they’re a megabloom or they’re only successful pollination of an entire cluster. :(
Kellog breakfast tomato is a great taste with a piece of toast.
Kellogg Breakfast :) Momotaro
i like my tomatoes to not have a ton of acid
I guess our tomatoes were good this year. Some creatures decided to eat almost all of them. We did get some sweet 100s which were delicious.
My favorite cherry is a husky here in my climate. 👍🌱
San marzanos for the win if you make sauce with them
Try Ox Heart! The best of the best tomato!
I've never had a beefsteak get very big.
Yup! I think you have to water them twice a day every day to get any size.
@@BlackJesus8463 good to know !!
I like Supersweet 100.
Yeah I don't like floral fruit either, not even sweet tomatoes! These things need lots of acid to have that classic flavor I'd expect from a good tomato.
Once in a blue moon a floral is well enough for me! Though I cannot resist trying a few new varieties each year!
@@Katydidit Some peppers got that floral taste too and it's nasty! I don't know how you do it.
Try Big Beef
The Park Whopper (Park Seed) is my all time favorite go-to tomato. The "if I could only grow one" tomato .. It's a hybrid. Great on a BLT or burger but they also make a great sauce. You should try at least one plant sometime and see how it does for you.
Sees him cut tomatoe from top to bottom clicks do not recommend videos from the channel oh nevermind he redeemed himself in the beefsteak 😂 ok I'll keep watching lol
Lmao at store bought tomatoes taste like despair!
My tomatoes are not doing that good. It's fun bot now I don't feel so proud after seeing yours.🙄
Maybe they need a little fertilizer boost? Or some Epsom salts? Don't give up... there is a definite learning curve to gardening! And I promise you... it is attainable if you stick with the process!!
If not this season ... maybe the next, God will reward your diligent efforts....I promise you that!!
You csll that a beefsteak?. You grow all dinky tomatoes
