  • Is this the world’s cutest sheep? The video today is of myself and Archie shearing some Valais Blacknose sheep for a friend.
    The video contains some details about the breed and some shearing footage.
    I don’t have a lot of free time just now so it’s quick edit but hopefully you still enjoy it.
    Feel free to leave a comment below.
    Thanks.

    I had a foster dad who was a sheep shearer..I was astonished when I saw how the sheep just lie there once on their bum and are so calm!....and s
    As he was a sheep shearer his hands were so soft because of the lanolin in the wool! Fascinating !

      It is some technique to have them in the right position so that they are comfortable and don't want to wriggle away, soft hand one bonus of the job 👌

    They are really cute. And they were my favourite as 'world's cutest sheep' but Sandi Brock of Shepard's Creek Farm, here in Ontario, has the world's cutest ram (lamb? He's less than a year old but he has just covered his first ewes). He's predominantly Rideau Alcott - his dad is purebred and his mom is a mix with a lot of Rideau. They are a breed developed by the Canadian Government from a blend of several sheep breeds, designed to be able to cope with our harsh winters, be prolific and able to breed year round. Colour wasn't a top priority as our wool business ... well, it mostly just 'isn't'. Sandi has a vlog called 'sheepishly me' that I've followed since before she had 10,000 subscribers (she just passed 200,000) and it is likely due to me following her that You Tube pointed me to you so you may owe her a thank you for boosting your following by at least 1 - me. Love your videos and seeing sheep kept outdoors on pasture (Sandi's unfortunately, never get to set foot on grass due to weather, her tight breeding program - ewes lambing every 9 months and she has at least 3 'flocks' in the rotation, and predators.). I'm getting better at understanding your accent (though it can require a few backing-ups to catch exactly what you said when you are speaking really fast) and you use a lot of terms I'm not familiar with. Looking forward to catching up on them all. Thank you for entertaining us during this particularly difficult year.

    Those sheep are a-dor-a-ble! They're just starting to make their way here to the states and some shepherds are crossing them for better/softer handle in wool quality. Archie did an excellent job keeping the fleece into one large piece, he deserves a few pints. Thanks for the video!

    • @DonnaScarpa
      @DonnaScarpa 3 года назад +4

      The breed is perfect the way it is. If you want a different micron count for the wool, pick a different breed. This is for rugs and durables - and of course, eye candy.

    • @nouka9248
      @nouka9248 2 года назад

      Us Valais People are glad the breed is getting more popular, would be a shame if they started to vanish.
      But the wool is perfectly fine as is. If you want better quality wool, get a different breed.

    I have a city girl question. Do the sheep act differently after they are shorn? I wonder if they feel better. It seems like they would. The only thing I can compare this to is getting my old long haired cat shaved once a year. She was very fluffy and couldn’t groom herself very well anymore, so we’d get her a summer “lion cut” once a year. They left her head, her paws (like boots), and a poof at the end of her tail for our amusement. She was a cranky old gal but after her haircut, she would be really loveable and want to be petted all the time. Are sheep like this, too?

    Hanging out with Archie really ratchets up the brogue! Which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just interesting how thick and rich the accent suddenly becomes when it’s a couple of Scots shooting the breeze.
    Why are these sheep so expensive? They are incredibly cute, they look like some kind of Star Wars muppet, but what makes such a high maintenance sheep worth such a steep price tag?

    Nothing looks quite as pathetic and out of sorts than a freshly sheered sheep. Yep I know they need to be done, and not doing it is really really bad because they don’t shed and the coat keeps growing. Just they look weird with no wool and pink skinned like alien creatures

      Stoic Gmail nope, he keeps the sheep in a position so it doesn’t struggle and get nicked. It’s quite the science, like a ballet.
