For me, that made it sound more fun lmao

@@ralfbaechle Autobahn speeds, but with the curve radius of a left turn at an intersection...
Honestly once they mentioned the speed it started to look like *more* fun to me.
I recognised an Aussie twang in Chris' speech and Googled him. He was born in Darwin, of all places, and originally competed in the bobsleigh for Australia. Having read his bio, I can see why he was so open about the fact that you can end up on your head: "He was involved in a catastrophic crash in January 2012 during the 2011-12 Bobsleigh World Cup in Altenberg, Germany which put him in hospital for eight days. After having his skin shredded and a piece of wood the size of a kitchen knife embedded in his back, Spring considered retiring but later returned to the track in April 2012."
Not surprisingly, most Australian ski (or bobsled) bums come from states where it snows a lot. So it's strange to see one from a place where it never snows.
Wow. If I were Tom's crew doing the research for that, I would've flaked out right after reading that.
I clocked it too and had to look him up!
I thought I was making up that slight accent, since I’m not even Australian.
Yep, noticed it as well

Tom needs to face the fact that he's no longer a presenter, he's a personality. This kind of content is something plenty of people are interested in!
congratulations on the medical reason, and merry christmass to you all
"Congratulations on the medical reason" is the best possible way to phrase that.
Tom, I think that it is not only awesome that you share your midlife crisis with the rest of the world by doing all these crazy things, but also that you let your team enjoy it with you to its fullest extent. The human touch of involving them in some of these videos really lifts them up to another level given how 'personal' these experiences tend to be for you.
in a way it is also just sweet sweet payback. the team haze given Tom some very odd things to do this year. now they can experience it the fullest.

Fun fact: the programmed hang time on The Griffin, a vertical drop coaster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, is just long enough to be perfectly timed for this chant

I rented that VHS so many times as a kid! :D
Some people say you know we cant believe - Tom Scott he has a bobsled team
Haha - that driver is either an Aussie that’s been in Canada a long time or a Canadian that’s been around Aussies in Whistler a long time 😂
His name is Christopher Spring, Australian-Canadian born in Aus but is on the Canadian team. Don't think you could be more bang on mate
Chris Spring is an Australian and so is Heath Spence - Both work in Canada, both have competed in IBSF competitions... but Chris did it for Canada and Heath for Australia

Chris Joel is gonna be jealous. "If you're doing it right there should be a chance of death. I say that about everything. I say that about walking to the shops"

Bobsledding (on that track anyway) is the scariest/most intense thing I've ever done. 300kph on a bike, bungie jumping, skydiving, all were easier than a touristy bobsled run to me.
I haven't done any bungie jumping or skydiving, but i can confirm that bobsledding is brutal, even the touristy bobsled taxi version. Proper race bobsled run must be absolutely insane.

I hope we'll eventually see more in the future.
The Georgian Flag hanging outside during the briefing is telling of just how difficult this track is.
Yes, a little bit of irony when it comes to giving the safety briefing with that background (both figuratively and literally).
I miss this channel so much. You introduced me to the jet lag team and sorted food, which channels I now enjoy so much. I also loved seeing you play board games as that is one of my big hobbies.
2 things: 1- How did any of you not do the chant from cool runnings? 2-If anything (heaven forbid) happens to Tom, the last thing that said on this show is going to be "that's nuts"... What a fantastic end, and I love that you involved your crew in this. Tom Scott, thank you for everything you and your various teams have done for the internet this year and in years past.
The chant is most likely copyrighted, so they may not be able to show it in the final video if they did do it.

Seeing the team getting involved is a real cool concept, it shows that people are really into this project and not just "working". I have to admit I watched it mainly because I was curious about everyone working behind the scenes than the actual thing that happened.

UnFun fact: Going down a blobsled track ONCE is enough to cause permeant brain damage. It's not just the big crashes that lead to "sled head" but also micro-concussions from the number and intensity of small jolts that happen on a sled run.
Lordy
Permanent
Sports were a mistake.
@@richcran7975 Sadly, there's only so much padding can do. The only realistic way you can stop these long-term issues with head injuries over time is to just not do those sports in the first place. Plus it isn't just the obvious ones like pro wrestling (where you're literally trained to take bumps on your back as tom showed) or american football, but auto racing, bobsleigh like you see in this video, association football, rallying, BMX, even submission-focused martial arts like BJJ still show athletes who get cte later in their lives. The more we research these long-term mental health conditions the more we're realizing, depressingly, that many of the seemingly innocent sports that exist all lead people down these awful conditions later in life.
@Rich Cran Won't help, the padding would be needed inside your head. As your brain is not in a fixed place inside it.
So padding on the outside does reduce it, but there will always be some bonking on the inside
Awesome gift to give your crew. I was surprised by the size of the crew. I figured that it was you and two or three others.

There is one in every recent Olympic venue (Whistler, Sochi, Pyeongchang and Yanqing), one in many older Olympic venues (Salt Lake City, Nagano, La Plagne, Lake Placid and Calgary), 2 originally meant to train commies (Altenberg and Sigulda), 3 more in Germany out of pure obsession (Winterberg, Oberhof and Konigssee) and the granddad of them all in Sankt Moritz, which is the only one that isn't made of concrete and way too many refrigeration tubes

I wonder if the crew knew a bit of the history of their driver , Chris Spring , and his traumatic bobsled accident of January 2012 during a practice run in Germany. Bobsled hit the roof and even took out part of it. Didn't know if he'd be able to work up the nerve to pilot a sled again, be responsible for the crew, but he did just weeks later and he said he feels the accident made him a better driver.

Is that Nodar Kumaritashvili (Georgia), who died in 2010 just before the Vancouver Games?
@@noahtalksmoney most likely. Lost control on a practice run, was launched from the track and struck an unsheilded support column if memory serves.
Not sure if it could have been prevented, or if padding support structures is standard for such bobsled runs, and the Whistler track was deficient in some way.
Kumartashvili was a luger; an accident like his would not occur in a bobsled. Plus, the track infrastructure has since been adapted to prevent this, and Tom's team took a lower start point so were going below maximum speed.
@@michaeldayman682 Wikipedia isn't necessarily the best source, but it's good for getting a quick overview... According to the wiki page on Nodar Kumaritashvili, the lugers on the track were reaching about ten miles an hour faster than the track had been rated for, which was a contributing factor. He left the track at a bend and struck a support pole; despite immediately receiving CPR and mouth-to-mouth, he had sustained serious injury and died in hospital.
